For many people, midnight is the time to sleep. But for a young astronomer, it’s the perfect time to start his day. The night is quiet and perfect for stargazing. He walks out of his bedroom and sets up his telescope in the open space. The Orion nebula is tonight’s target. With only caffeine and the stars for company, he begins his journey into the cosmos (宇宙).
Every Friday evening, the young astronomer joins his club to explore the universe. They study a wide range of topics, from relativity and cosmology to the history of astronomy (天文学) and even astrobiology. When the weather is clear, they go stargazing with their own equipment. Sometimes, just lying down and chatting with friends under the night sky is enough. However, when it’s cloudy, they still have fun with gatherings and club dinners.
The club is a place for everyone, from beginners to advanced learners. Seniors guide juniors through lectures and competition training. This year, the club won several awards in the NUS-NTU AstroChallenge and even represented Singapore in an international competition.
The young astronomer also enjoys the club’s outreach events. They organize Astronite, an annual stargazing event, and Astrigue, an introductory astronomy competition. For better views of the stars, they sometimes travel to places like Bintan in Indonesia or Port Dickson in Malaysia. Closer to home, they visit Semakau Island, which is reserved for astronomy due to its least light pollution.
Astronomy has changed the young astronomer’s life. It has taught him patience and helped him appreciate the wonders of nature. It also encourages him to pursue his interests and stay grounded with the support of friends and teachers. He hopes more people will join him in exploring the vast and awesome universe.

The ‘alalā, a unique kind of crow native only to Hawaii, has a deep cultural significance for native Hawaiians. These intelligent and talkative birds are known for their different calls. However, decades ago, they faced the cruel reality of dying out in the wild. In the 1970s, with no other options left, they were taken into captivity (圈养) as an important measure to save the species. Unfortunately, by 2002, they completely disappeared from the wild.
Thankfully, a special breeding program managed to turn things around to some degree. The population has now grown to over 100 birds. But the journey to reintroduce them to their natural habitat has been tough. In 2016, a group of ‘alalā was released on Hawai’s Big Island. Aware of the presence of their natural predator (捕食动物), a hawk known as the ‘io, wildlife protectors provided the birds with predator-training. Despite these efforts, the hawks still managed to hunt the released crows, and recaptured the remaining birds.
Now, a new and promising effort is being made. Five one-year-old ‘alalā have been set free in a forest on Maui, an area free from hawks. Younger crows, being more adaptable, are expected to have a better chance of survival. In the forest, the birds are placed in a safe, netted enclosure (围场). Scientists are monitoring their every move closely, and they are also provided with additional food because they haven’t yet had the ability to find food independently. For the ‘alalā, after so many years in captivity, there is no clear path for fully returning them to the wild.
Hanna Mounce, the manager of the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, emphasizes that every small achievement counts in the fight to protect Hawaii’s precious wildlife. Although the ‘alalā doesn’t fully adapt to the wild just yet, the fact that they have been released and are currently doing well is unbelievably encouraging and marks a significant milestone in protection efforts.
8. What do we know about the ‘alalā from the first paragraph
A. They are fit to live in groups.
B. They are an endangered species.
C. They are Hawaiians’ favorites.
D. They are good at communication.
9. What are scientists doing about the five one-year-old ‘alalā now
A. Getting close to them slowly.
B. Adjusting their food structure.
C. Teaching them different living skills.
D. Putting them in a forest under protection.
10. What is Hanna Mounce’s attitude towards the ‘alalā protection efforts
A. Unclear. B. Optimistic
C. Worried. D. Critical.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. ’Alalā: A Unique Bird Found
B. Maui: A Dream Place for Birds
C. Project: Saving Precious Wildlife
D. Journey: From Captivity to the Wild
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. D

Laughter, a universal human expression, takes many forms. But not all laughter is created equal. New research led by social psychologist Roza Kamiloglu at VU Amsterdam shows that laughter induced by tickling (挠痒痒) stands apart from other forms of laughter.
Her team began by collecting 887 unconscious laughter videos from YouTube. They then classified these videos according to what caused the laughter, including tickle attacks, a type of incident called taking pleasure in other people’s misfortune, and verbal jokes. About 70% of these videos were used to train a machine-learning algorithm (运算法则) to link laughter forms with their causes. Surprisingly, based on acoustic features like loudness and rhythm, the algorithm could correctly identify laughter produced by tickling 62.5% of the time. When human observers were developed, they correctly identified tickling laughter 61.2%of the time.
This research, published in Biology Letters, has far-reaching impacts. Many mammals, such as dogs, squirrel monkeys, and chimpanzees, produce cheerful voice during play that sounds like laughter. One of the first things that newborns do early in life is laugh, and even deaf babies laugh unconsciously. Some primates (灵长目动物) engage in the activity, too. This indicates that tickling-related laughter likely developed over 10 million years ago to help primates build friendly relations.
Dr Kamiloglu now plans to study how infectious different sorts of laughs are. She thinks that if the tickling laugh developed to bring primates together, it should be highly infectious, but this has not been tested yet. As for other forms of laughter unique to humans, they probably developed much later when the human brain became more complex.
With this in mind, there are two main types of laughter: one from tickling and the other from other amusing things. This research not only helps us understand the nature of laughter but also shows its evolutionary roots. But he who laughs last, it would seem, laughs longest.
12. What does the underlined word “induced” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Caused. B. Stopped.
C. Replaced. D. Recorded.
13. What did Dr Kamiloglu’s team do next after collecting videos
A. They picked out the videos with jokes.
B. They asked observers to enjoy the videos.
C. They sorted the videos by the causes of laughter.
D. They used machines to analyze the features of jokes.
14. What can be inferred from the published research
A. Laughter is unique to human beings.
B. Laughter connects with social interaction.
C. Primates are fond of joining in playful activities.
D. The human brain varies with the change of laughter
15. What will Dr Kamiloglu explore about laughs in her further research
A. Their complexity. B. Their cultural roots.
C. Their infectiousness. D. Their specific types.

We love Sheba, our neighbor the Williams’ dog, as if she were our own. She and our dog Dax grew up together as best friends. Anytime the Williams went out of town, we had the honor of watching Sheba in our home. She fit in like part of the family, and her comfort here was obvious.
Over the years, we specially told the Williams that if they needed to find a new home for Sheba, we would adopt her. We were joking but serious.
The day came when they had to move. Mr. William had been out of work and had to leave the area for a job in his field. They searched carefully for a place that would allow Sheba in, but without result. Finally, they were forced to move to a pet-free apartment. Of course, as soon as he knew Sheba wouldn’t be able to go with them, Mr. William gave us the first option to take her.
However, things had changed dramatically for us. Dax had passed away, and his death had hit me hard, and Sheba was twelve — elderly for her breed (品种). Just the thought of experiencing another loss like that within the next few years was too much for me. Also, our new young dog wasn’t willing to share her space. Not to mention, our new cat was frightened of Sheba.
We told Mr. William we would need to think it over. Although he was very understanding, I started feeling guilty about our hesitation. I felt as if we had broken a promise to a dear friend, but we were just in no position to keep Sheba for good.
To ease my guilt, I offered to find a new home for Sheba. So I posted on my social media account, seeking someone who might be interested in adopting Sheba. I knew the chance was very small, but I was determined to make every effort to honor our promise. Luckily for us, my former schoolmate Henry noticed my post and e-mailed me, asking to visit Sheba.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The following day, Henry and his son arrived as promised.

As they got in the car, Henry allowed me to give Sheba a hug before they left.

【答案】The following day, Henry and his son arrived as promised. They were immediately drawn to Sheba’s gentle and friendly nature. Henry’s son was especially excited, stroking Sheba’s fur and playing with her. Henry told me that they had always wanted a dog, and after seeing my post, they felt it was fate. They spent a long time interacting with Sheba, and it was clear that a bond was forming. I watched them, relieved that Sheba had found a potential new home.
As they got in the car, Henry allowed me to give Sheba a hug before they left. I held Sheba tightly, whispering words of comfort and telling her that she was going to a wonderful new family. Sheba seemed to sense the situation and licked my face gently. I waved goodbye as the car drove away, feeling a mix of sadness and happiness. Sad because I would miss her, but happy that she was going to a place where she would be loved and cared for. I knew that this was the best outcome for Sheba, and I was grateful to Henry and his family for giving her a new home.泸州市高2024级高一学年末统一考试

B. Adjusting their food structure.
C. Teaching them different living skills.
D. Putting them in a forest under protection.
10. What is Hanna Mounce’s attitude towards the ‘alalā protection efforts
A. Unclear. B. Optimistic
C. Worried. D. Critical.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. ’Alalā: A Unique Bird Found
B. Maui: A Dream Place for Birds
C. Project: Saving Precious Wildlife
D. Journey: From Captivity to the Wild

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The following day, Henry and his son arrived as promised.
