Artificial Intelligence:A REAL THREAT
In the words of Professor Stephen Hawking, artificial intelligence will be “either the best,or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity”.Technology of Tomorrow Forum wants to hear your thoughts on AI.Is it our greatest human achievement so far?Or is it the biggest threat to our existence
Millenniumbutterfly
Thanks to AI,I've got my own super-smart personal assistant built into my phone. She always has an immediate answer for any question I put to her,and even uses my answers to learn more about my preferences. It used to feel like 50 per cent of my time was spent researching new restaurants. In contrast,my PA only needs a few seconds to find the right place. Every recommendation she gives me is great since she can predict if I will like a particular restaurant.
And speaking of hanging out,I'm hoping that self-driving cars are available soon. I've been taking driving lessons for over a year, and still haven't got my licence.Self-driving cars can learn to drive in the same way that we do,and can make judgements based on information. And as they won't be susceptible to human error, they'll certainly be a lot safer. The only thing is that there might be a few machine-learning problems when the first cars hit the market,so perhaps I'd better learn to drive first.Still,I do think that developments in AI will on the whole make doing day-to-day things a lot easier.
Popkid
The technology you're using and enjoying today is a basic form of AI which can't think independently without programming.Of course,it could be very useful to have a more advanced form of AI—a truly independent form of artificial intelligence, capable of exercising its own judgement, could help us solve many of the world's problems. But have you ever thought about the risks? After all,why would an independent form of AI need to consider the opinions and desires of humans? We could be seen as a “small” inconvenience that's in the way of a solution to a bigger problem. If we're lucky,AI might think we're valuable enough to keep around. If not,it might wipe us all out!
Even if that doesn't happen, there are other risks.Millenniumbutterfly, you say how great it would be to have self-driving cars, but what about all the taxi drivers who would lose their jobs? They would just be among the first victims of AI.Nearly every job is potentially at risk in the long run.Even journalists are now being replaced with technology that can write basic news reports. As it is,almost 50 per cent of US jobs are at risk from automation in the next 20 years.
The truth is that none of us is prepared for the challenges of AI.
Pink_haze
Machine learning is something we have come to accept as a part of our modern world.I believe most of the value of AI lies in its capacity to analyse and interpret vast amounts of data, which means it can even solve problems that are too challenging for human experts.
But while super-intelligent AI could be the biggest leap forward in human history,if it goes wrong or falls into the wrong hands,it could also be the most dangerous. However,AI is not going to go away.We have no choice but to embrace it and regulate it.One thing I think we all agree on,though,is that saying “My AI did it!” won't be any excuse for illegal or immoral behaviour!

There are many scientific breakthroughs made by women in the Antarctic. Here are four landmarks in Antarctica and the female pioneers they're named after.
Jones Terrace
The ice-free terrace in eastern Antarctica's Victoria Land bears Jones' name.In 1969,geochemist Lois M.Jones led the first all-female research team from the U.S.to work in Antarctica.Jones and her team studied chemical weathering in the McMurdo Dry Valleys,an ice-free area of Antarctica.Through chemical analyses of rocks they had collected,Jones and her team discovered many geochemical characteristics of the valley's ice-covered lakes.
Mount Fiennes
8,202-foot-high Mount Fiennes, located on Antarctica's largest island—Alexander Island—is named after Ginny Fiennes. She established and maintained 80-foot-tall radio towers in the Antarctic with her colleagues. In 1985,Fiennes became the first female invited to join the Antarctic Club,a British supper club open to individuals who have spent extended time in the Antarctic region.
Francis Peak
The 3,727-foot-tall peak on Antarctica's Adelaide Island is named after Dame Jane Francis, who is the first female director of the British Antarctic Survey, the national polar research institute of the UK.Her collection of fossils on Seymour Island helped conclude in a 2021 paper that Antarctica's abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.
Peden Cliffs
Peden Cliffs near Antarctica's Marie Byrd Land are proof of the labor of Irene Peden. She was the first American female scientist to both live and work in the Antarctic, where she used radio waves to study ice sheets.Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio wave spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica's ice sheets.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了四位女性在探索南极洲方面取得的成就。

1.What do the first two pioneers have in common
A.They analyzed different chemicals of rocks in Antarctica.
B.They both worked with their own team in Antarctica.
C.They conducted the research in the ice-free areas in Antarctica.
D.They joined the Antarctic Club for their stay in Antarctica.
B [细节理解题。根据第二段的“In 1969,geochemist Lois M.Jones led the first all-female research team from the U.S.to work in Antarctica.Jones and her team studied… an ice-free area of Antarctica.”和第三段的“She established and maintained 80-foot-tall radio towers in the Antarctic with her colleagues.”

2.Who proved the previous higher temperatures of the Antarctic
A.Lois M.Jones. B.Ginny Fiennes.
C.Dame Jane Francis. D.Irene Peden.
C [细节理解题。根据第四段的“… Antarctica's abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.”可知,Dame Jane Francis根据在西摩岛收集的化石得出结论,南极洲丰富的植物化石暗示,这里曾经的气候比现在暖和得多,由此可知,Dame Jane Francis证明了南极以前的高温。故选C。]

3.What is the scientific breakthrough of Irene Peden
A.She was the first American scientist to explore the Antarctic.
B.She measured the spreading frequencies of radio waves.
C.She found out the thickness of Antarctica's ice sheets.
D.She discovered a lot of ice-covered lakes in the Antarctic.
C [细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio wave spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica's ice sheets.”可知,Irene Peden利用无线电波得出南极洲冰盖的厚度。故选C。]

At the end of 2019,I learned that Here After AI,whose goal is to let the living communicate with the dead, was looking for applicants of its new AI project.Interested in what it was promising,I applied to experiment the software on my very-much-alive parents.
At first,I thought it would be just a fun project to see what was technologically possible. Then their health condition added some urgency to the experiment.I was frightened that my parents might die since my father had been diagnosed with cancer and my mother was recently developing symptoms of early Alzheimer's disease, and that with the distance between us,I might never have the chance to say goodbye.
The first step was an interview. My parents were asked questions by a technician for hours—about everything from their earliest memories to what they believe will happen after they die.Whether through illness-generated concerns or a willingness to humour their daughter,my parents put up zero resistance. The company then took their responses and started to create the voice assistants.A few months later,my virtual parents arrived via email attachment.
When I communicated with them through the app on my phone,my hands were shaking.I hadn't seen my actual, real parents for six months. They told me personal stories I'd never heard. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods,as well as my own.It was mesmerizing.
Personally,I have mixed feelings about my experiment.I'm glad to have my virtual(虚拟的)parents. They've enabled me to learn new things about my parents, and it's comforting to think that those bots will be there even when my parents aren't.On the other hand,I can't help but find it sad that it took a stranger interviewing my parents for me to properly appreciate the complex people they are.But I feel lucky to have had the chance to grasp that—and to still have the precious opportunity to spend more time with them and learn more about them, face to face,no technology involved.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者参与Here After AI项目,通过AI技术与虚拟的父母进行交流的经历和感受。
4.Why did the author initially join the AI project

Getting lost is dangerous for older people who suffer from dementia(痴呆症).Naturally,it worries their caregivers too.
One survey in 2021 of 576 family caregivers of people with dementia showed similar popularity in getting lost.According to the survey, only 12% of family caregivers would seek help from friends and neighbors, thanks to technological development, family caregivers increasingly used the reliable GPS function on mobile phones or tracking devices to search for the lost people with dementia.
The tracking device “iBeacon”the researchers developed has fast response and long-distance tracking up to 50m and is battery-saving with 1-year battery life.It is designed in different forms so that it can be put into a wallet or attached to a walking stick to lower the resistance of people with dementia to carry the device.
When a person with dementia is lost, the caregiver could activate the missing alarm on the app installed(安装)on his or her mobile phone. And then the citizens who have installed the tracking app on their mobile phones will be informed to turn on their Bluetooth for iBeacon searching and GPS for location sharing. When these citizens' mobile phones find the iBeacon, their location would be sent to the cloud server and then be sent to the caregiver to help with the search.
Up to now, over 3,000 people have obtained the iBeacon in this project and close to 40,000 citizens have downloaded the app to help with the search. The caregivers participating in the project have welcomed the technology and the tracking device.85% of caregivers observed that their relatives with dementia were willing to carry the iBeacon,78% were satisfied with the durability(耐用性)of the iBeacon, and 86% thought that the designated mobile app was easy to use.
Overall, this programme has promoted dementia friendliness and the usage of technology by mobilizing the public to aid in searching for people with dementia who get lost in the community.

Screens are replacing paper in almost every area of communication, but is this good for our mental health Research shows that reading has many mental health benefits, yet most people choose screen time over books for entertainment.Even in schools, digital learning is taking over, making backpacks lighter but challenging students to stay focused.
Reading short posts on social media reduces our attention span, making long books harder to enjoy. This type of reading also uses simple language, offering less exposure to rich vocabulary and ideas.Research indicates that comprehension is six to eight times better with physical books than e-readers.While people may read faster on devices, distractions(使人分心的事物)like social media, ads, and notifications(通知)often prevent them from remembering what they read.Physical books provide a more immersive experience, helping readers understand and remember the content better.
Holding a book, turning its pages, and highlighting favorite parts engage the body.Researchers say turning pages helps create a “mental map”,linking what we read to specific pages, which aids memory. The physical actions of reading a book—how you hold it,how your eyes move across the pages—create a unique experience.Unlike e-books,physical books offer a tangible(可感知的)experience, which is important for building strong mental connections.
Physical books also offer a social experience that e-readers do not.Visiting a bookstore, asking a librarian for recommendations,or sharing a book with a friend are enjoyable aspects of reading. These social interactions are missed when downloading e-books.
Most people strongly prefer printed books. In one study,92 percent of students said they preferred print books over e-books.There's something special about holding a book, admiring its cover, and seeing your progress with a bookmark.Reading physical books not only improves comprehension but also provides a richer, more engaging experience.

One of the most important elements of successful job hunting is the job interview. 16 In order to give yourself an edge over others applying for the job you want,it is important to create a solid impression during the job interview.
Because what you say during an interview is so important, there are two rules to remember. One is to present yourself in a favourable way and stress your areas of excellence. However, don't exaggerate(夸张);tell the truth. 17 Notice the interviewer's interests and relate your comments to them.
18 Don't be afraid to ask for a second interview if you need time to gather information that will be more useful in the second interview. Most interviewers will appreciate your questions and your ability to listen and respond.
Each of us has sensitive areas, which could refer to your lack of an academic degree,a long period of unemployment,or lack of work experience if you are entering a new field. 19 If you believe that this area presents a real barrier to a job offer, you could be communicating this doubt to the interviewer. Many times, however,an interviewer will ignore these sensitive areas if you have a confident, positive attitude.
The job interview is an important part of the job search because the attitude and impression you project can make the interviewer feel “with you”or “against you”. 20 Interviewers have the intelligence to recognise genuine enthusiasm and interest.
A.Answer sensitive questions briefly and positively.
B.Show confidence in yourself and your ability to do the job.
C.Some people lose job opportunities because of talking too much.
D.If unsure of job requirements, ask questions to see if you're qualified.
E.Remember that you have the power to create a favourable impression.
F.There are thousands of people entering new careers and searching for jobs.

Lily and Susan had been best friends since kindergarten. They shared everything—from secrets to lunches—and were inseparable. One sunny afternoon,as they walked in the nearby park, chatting about their plans for the future, they saw an injured dog.
Without hesitation,Lily and Susan decided to help the poor little dog. They carefully held it and rushed to the nearest vet(兽医)clinic. The vet assured them that the dog would be fine with some rest and medicine.Relieved, they decided to name the dog Lucky and take turns to care for it until it recovers.
Their act of kindness brought them even closer, and they spent many joyful hours playing with Lucky in the park. However,as high school progressed, their interests started to diverge(出现分歧).Lily became passionate about painting, spending hours in the art room perfecting her art works, while Susan developed a deep interest in science, joining the school's science club and taking part in various competitions.
Feeling disheartened, both girls went their separate ways. But despite their differences, they couldn't shake off the memories of better times and the close relationship they once shared.
One evening,as Lily walked home from an art class, she noticed Susan sitting alone on the side of the road, looking deep in thought. She hesitated but then gathered up courage to approach her.“Mind if I sit down?”she asked softly.Susan looked up,surprised but not unwelcoming.“I was just thinking about old times,”she admitted.“Me too,”Lily said quietly.

After talking, they came up with a plan to rebuild their relationship.Susan decided to try to understand painting, while Lily decided to try to understand science. After school, they went home together. On weekends, they took Lucky to the park for a walk, which made them feel excited. When encountering disagreements, they would analyze rather than argue.True friends will not be separated by minor conflicts.True friends understand and support each other.
