Peking Opera used to sound strange to Dou Yi. The 14 year old Beijinger said whenever she found Peking Opera on TV, she watched another program. Like most of today's teenagers, she preferred pop music and changed TV channels (频道) when operas played, thinking they were for elderly people.
This changed when her school introduced Peking Opera classes. Every week, a teacher taught students famous operas and the four main roles: sheng (male), dan (female), jing (colourful faced male), and chou (comic role). They learned basic movements like waving sleeves (衣袖) and special steps.
“At first, the singing was too high and the rhythms (节奏) were tricky. We laughed trying to copy it,” Dou said. But with practice, the music became meaningful. They discovered operas tell stories—some about heroes, others about poems.
Many Chinese schools teach Peking Opera to share traditions. Dou's school organizes performances where students act out scenes. “I didn't know operas included history,” she said. “One even has a Tang Dynasty poem! It's like fun history lessons.”
Now, Dou and her classmates enjoy Peking Opera. They discuss it during breaks and sing parts together. “I used to think traditions were old fashioned, but they're part of us,” she explained. “If we keep learning, this art won't fade. It's our treasure!”
Through school, Dou found beauty in Peking Opera. She hopes more teens will try it. “Understanding our culture makes us proud of who we are,” she smiled.

This way, we can make sure their places are safe, and if anything goes missing, we'll have proof (证据) to help deal with the problem.
