When Joshua White was growing up in southeastern Indiana, he would lie in his backyard for hours observing ants and bugs.He met the little creatures with a sense of wonder and engaged himself in understanding the mysteries of the natural world.
White grew up to become an artist. He recently moved to North Carolina, where he still spends considerable time as he did in childhood: walking near his house and carefully looking at his surroundings. What has changed is that he now captures the little animals with a smartphone camera that allows him to better study them and share the photos with viewers beyond his backyard.
His lifelong love of the natural world is reflected in his project “A Photographic Survey of the American pared with Charles Darwin, who traveled great distances to observe and sketch plants and animals that existed in nearly inaccessible places, White records the plants and animals that are frequent to see in everyday life but are rarely considered noteworthy.
White believes that most of us don't think often enough about the world we inhabit or what goes on under our feet.Though some creatures are often regarded as something insignificant or even pests,White's images ask us to recognize not only that they're here but also that they're important.
24.What do we know about White's childhood

Your glasses may someday replace your smartphone, and some high-tech fans can't wait to try them on and use the AR,VR and GPS services that the futuristic eyewear is likely to include.
“I'd use it if I were hanging out with friends at 3 am and going to the bar and wanted to see what was open," said Walter Choo,40,of Fort Greene.
Some early versions of the smartphone-like glasses have come out a few years ago and cost between $250 and $600.Though they are not quite as the hit some might expect, new and more technological enhanced versions are being designed and developed, with more convenient and awe-inspiring technologies applied, possibly including a variation of augmented reality, a technology already available on smartphones and tablets(平板电脑)that overlays information onto the screen about one's surroundings. So, for example, if you were walking down a street, indicators would pop up showing you the nearest coffee shop or directions could be plotted out and come into view right on the sidewalk in front of you.
However, not everyone is looking for such product.“As far as a mainstream consumer product, this isn't just something anybody needs,” said Sam Biddle, who writes for a famous tech blog.“We're accustomed to having one thing in our pocket to do all these things,”he added, “and the average consumer isn't gonna be able to afford another device that's hundreds and hundreds of dollars.”
Seth Weintraub, who has kept reporting on the smartphone-like glasses, held a different opinion. He said he is confident that this type of wearable device will eventually be as common as smartphones.
“It's just like smartphones 10 years ago,” Weintraub said.“A few people started getting emails on their phones, and people thought that was crazy.Same kind of thing. We see people bending their heads to look at their smartphones, and it's unnatural,” he said.“There's gonna be improvements to that, and this is a step there.”
28.One of the possible unctions of the smartphone-like glasses is to______.
A.programme the opening hours of a bar
B.supply you with a picture of the future
C.provide information about your surroundings
D.update the maps and GPS in your smartphones
29.The underlined expression "pop up" in paragraph 3 probably means_______.
A.to develop rapidly. B.to get round quickly
C.to appear immediately D.to go over automatically
30.According to Sam Biddle,the smartphone-like glasses are________.
A.necessary for teenagers B.attractive to New Yorkers
C.available to people worldwide D.expensive for average consumers
31.We can learn from the last two paragraphs that the smartphone-like glasses______.
A.may have a potential market B.are as common as smartphones
C.are popular among young adults D.will be improved by a new technology
D
Why is the sky blue There are various popular explanations to this question, though they have been proved false. There is,however, one current answer provided by modern science. It is the result of electromagnetic scattering(电磁散射)concerning sunlight and those extremely tiny pieces, namely particles, in Earth's atmosphere.
To understand it you must understand how light waves work. The distance from one point to the next on light waves is called the wavelength, which determines the colour of the light.Sunlight looks like a white light, yet it is more than that.In fact, it is formed by different colours mixed together, travelling in a straight line. When it knocks into something, it will break into waves, the lengths of which vary according to the thing it knocks into. One short light wave corresponds to the colour of blue.
When a gas particle gets hit by a light wave, it can take in some of the energy of the wave and radiates(发射).Due to their frequency, blue light waves are much more easily taken in.
But the blue light taken in never radiates in one direction only.Instead, it shoots off in all directions. So the sky is blue because you are seeing the scattered light as it bounces(反弹)around the atmosphere.
At sunrise or sunset, the sky turns red and orange also because of a scattering process. When the sun is near the horizon, it passes through more atmosphere.During the process, the longer light waves pass through thinner layers of the atmosphere, and become visible in orange and red.
One false explanation claims that the sky is blue because it reflects the colour of the blue ocean. The truth is what causes the ocean to look blue is the same thing that causes the sky to look blue.
32.The colour of light depends on_____.
A.electromagnetic scattering. B.the length of its wave
C.the layers of the atmosphere D.the object the gas particle knocks into
33.From the passage we can learn that______.
A.the light from the sun has different colours
B.the light taken in usually radiates in one direction
C.blue light waves are much more difficult to take in
D.the light from the sun becomes white when it runs into an object
34.Why does the sky look red or orange at sunset
A.The light waves are shorter at that time.
B.The scattered light passes through more atmosphere.
C.The scattered light bounces around the atmosphere.
D.The shorter waves pass through thinner layers of the atmosphere.
35.Which of the following statements is NOT true about the blue sky
A.Blue light waves are much more easily taken in.
B.The colour of the light has an effect on the colour of the sky.
C.The sky is blue because it shows the colour of the oceans.
D.The particles in the atmosphere affect the colour of the sky.

A Great Monday
Monday started out well.I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my first hour math test.I was confident of getting good grades. Then I left my house.Ten minutes later, I was settled with my friends on the school bus.We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped (绊倒) over someone’s foot accidentally and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily.Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted (擦灰) off his jacket and made his way to an empty seat.He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by.I did well in my math test.I read two more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. It wasn’t long before we heard the lunch bell.I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall. Then I couldn’t help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking.I smiled at him quickly and looked away.
When we had finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time.Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great.I raised my leg for one last toe touch.RIIPPP! I felt my jeans split down the middle of my backside.
I froze.I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans.Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes.

That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan . I thanked him for giving me his jacket and returned it to him. Gathering my courage, I sincerely apologized to him for my misconduct on the bus, and thanked him for helping me out of an equally embarrassing situation. Ryan, with a broad smile, patted me on the shoulder and told me to forget about it, joking he fell like that a lot.
