Each year, the world produces more than 300 million tonnes of plastic waste. Unlike natural materials like paper and wood, which break down quite quickly and mix with soil, plastic can take hundreds of years to degrade. Now, a group of scientists at the University of Sydney have found a way to break down plastic using fungi(真菌).
Fungi are a group of plant-like organisms, including mildew and mushrooms. The scientists paid attention to two types, called Aspergillus terreus and Engyodontium, which are often found in soil. In the experiment, the fungi were used to break down a type of plastic called polypropylene (聚丙烯), which makes up about 28% of the world's plastic waste. It's used to make food containers and bottle covers.
The scientists used pieces of polypropylene plastic that were first weakened by heat, chemicals, or ultraviolet(UV) light. This helped the fungi to do their job quicker. The research found that after 90 days, between 25% and 27% of the samples had broken down. After 140 days, the plastic had completely degraded, which meant it had become safe and would no longer be considered pollution.
Polypropylene is very difficult to recycle because it often gets mixed up with other materials.Only 1% of it is recycled around the world and the rest of it ends up in landfills(huge areas where rubbish is thrown). The researchers hope that this new method can help reduce plastic pollution.
The next step of the research will be to test how they could speed up the process, and if it would be possible to use the method on a much larger scale.
The scientists are also studying micro-organisms(tiny living things) that live in the sea to test if they could be used to break down plastic waste in the ocean. So far, the results have been good. One of the researchers, Amira Farzana Samat, says, “We are quite excited about this.”
( )21. What does the underlined word“degrade” mean
Come out. B. Die out. C. Break down. D. Fall down.
( )22. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. The results of the experiment. B. The types of fungi.
C. The use of mushrooms. D. The ways of recycling plastic.
( )23. What per cent of the polypropylene ends up in landfills
A. 1%. B.25%. C.27%. D. 99%.
( )24. Which of the following might be Amira Farzana Samat’ s idea
A. He will soon give up doing the experiment.
B. The results of the experiment will be difficult to accept.
C. Engyodontium will do better in breaking down polypropylene.

Dear Mike,
It's great to hear from you.
范文参考
Dear Mike,
It's great to hear from you. I feel proud knowing your interest in Chinese literature. The set phrase you asked me means Trying to help seedlings grow by pulling them up. There is a story behind it.
A man in the Song State was anxious about the slow growth of his seedlings. One day, he went to the field and pulled them upward one by one. He came back tired and said to his family, “I'm exhausted today, for I have helped the seedlings grow much taller all at once.” Hearing this, his son ran to look at the seedlings. To his horror, all of them had dried up and died.
This set phrase means that growing against the law of development in things and being overanxious for quick results will make things worse.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
