“They’ll understand when they’re older,” Hearing this, as a parent, you may feel better. But the fact is that even when kids become adults, it doesn’t mean they’ll agree with your decisions.
Recently, I have had lots of conversations with my 19-year-old daughter about decisions I made in her childhood. She says she disagrees with some of them and some have even caused harm to her. That hurts. I think I must have failed as a parent.
It turns out that my daughter’s questioning is very normal. It happens to almost every teenager when they are in their late teens.
“In their late teens, teenagers start to find out who they are and what they stand for (支持),” says Mary Fleming, a college professor. “The search for identity (身份) is not always smooth.” The first task for teenagers is to dismantle the old life structure and to build a new one in its place. In other words, parents created that old life structure of childhood, so they are often at the heart of that dismantling process.
Hearing critical (批评的) words is hard. But if your teenager comes to you wanting to talk about it, pay attention to him or her. For both of you, it’s the beginning of understanding each other. And as they grow up, teenagers will realize they can’t live their lives over again, and neither can their parents. They will understand that their parents did the best they could with what they knew at the time.
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?
A. Kids may disagree with their parents when they grow up.
B. Adults should let kids make their own decisions.
C. Kids need to talk with their parents more often.
D. Parents often make right decisions for their kids.
2. How does the writer feel when hearing her daughter’s words at first?
A. Confident. B. Surprised. C. Comfortable. D. Sad.
3. What does the underlined word “dismantle” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. To learn something. B. To break something.
C. To organize something. D. To forget something.
4. Why do teenagers in their late teens often question their parents?
A. Because they want to stand out. B. Because they want to talk to their parents.
C. Because they want to find out their identity. D. Because they want to show their independence.
5. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Why it’s difficult to hear critical words. B. How to deal with teenagers’ critical words.
C. Why teenagers should talk with their parents. D. How to let teenagers understand their parents.

(The living room. Friday night. A table and two chairs at front centre. Grandfather and Father seated at the table, are playing chess.)
Grandfather: And…I win!
(Son enters room.)
Father: Not again! Oh look, here comes my boy. How are you, son?
Son: (nervously walking to the table) Erm…Dad, can we talk?
Father: Sure! You know you can always turn to your dad for a chat.
Son: OK. Here it is. I’ve decided not to go to university. I want to focus on my band and have a career in music when I leave school.
Father: (raising his voice in surprise) You can’t be serious! What about your future career as a lawyer?
Son: I knew you’d say that. You just assume I want to be a lawyer, but that’s only because you are a lawyer.
Father: What’s wrong with being a lawyer? Lawyers help people and are respected by others.
Son: Yes, but I’m not interested in law. I want to work in a studio, not a court.
Grandfather: (looking at Father) Calm down. OK?
Father: (ignoring Grandfather’s words) Stop daydreaming! Playing in a band is not a job.
Son: Of course it is! The music industry is developing fast now. Making music is a job.
Grandfather: (stepping between Father and Son and raising his voice) Hey! I told you to calm down, both of you!
Father: But I told him to study something useful at university!
Grandfather: (laughing) Easy, son! I remember when you were his age, you said that you wanted to be a professional football player.
Father: And you wanted me to be an engineer!
Grandfather: I just wanted you to be happy, and an engineer — a happy engineer.
Grandfather: Yes, and you have found the career that suits your talents. I’m so proud of you. Your son is proud of you, too.
Son: Of course I am, but I have different talents.
Grandfather: (turning to Son) Why don’t you also take my advice and think carefully before jumping in with both feet?
Son: Well, I could try…
Grandfather: If you go to university and play music at the same time, you will have two choices for your future. And I’m sure playing music will help you make lots of new friends at university.
Father: Yes, lots of new lawyer friends!
Son: (with a sigh) Dad…

How did nearsighted people manage in the pre-glasses past? Aristotle may have written the first research results of myopia (近视) around 350B.C. Because their eyeballs are too long, people with this condition can see objects that are close by, but distant objects look blurry.
Neil Handley, a museum curator, said not much is known about how people dealt with myopia before the first lenses for nearsighted people were invented in the 15th century in Europe. And he noted that “even in the history of the invention of glasses, that is a late development.”
There are 13th-century European examples of handheld convex lenses (凸透镜) that were used to treat age-related vision loss known as presbyopia (We’d call them reading glasses today). But the technology wasn’t used to treat nearsightedness for another 200 years.
“Because of the way that lens is held, you can see through it, and the artist has caught the effect that the glass has,” Handley said. Myopia could be something of a modern condition. The number of nearsighted people has risen quickly in recent years, and researchers have predicted that half the world will be myopic by 2050. One study by the College of Optometrists found that myopia is more than twice as common among kids in the U.K. now than it was the 1960s.
Doctors are still trying to find out the cause behind this trend. Some have blamed (归咎于) genetic causes or an increase in studying and screen time.
It’s likely that myopia didn’t influence as many people in the past as it does now. Handley said the late creation of nearsighted glasses suggests that treating the small number of people with myopia wasn’t considered as a most important thing and that people could deal with myopia by making some changes in their lifestyle. Or, maybe there was more of an emphasis (强调) on putting people in jobs that were suited to their ability to see, he said.
For example, people with myopia were historically valued in artisan contexts, such as medieval European monasteries, where illuminating manuscripts (手稿) and painting required making tiny, exact brushstrokes. “The myopic person, far from being given some correction, was actually encouraged to remain in their myopic condition, because it was actually ideal for them doing this job. They don’t necessarily consider it as disability,” Handley said.
1. What does the underlined word “blurry” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Dark. B. Warm. C. Unclear. D. Uncomfortable.
2. The passage is developed by ____ .
A. providing facts B. presenting causes
C. comparing opinions D. making up stories
3. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. People in the past didn’t develop myopia.
B. People with myopia could also lead a normal life.
C. Myopia could be cured by changing people’s lifestyle.
D. Most jobs about art preferred nearsighted people than others.
4. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Many causes lead to modern myopia.
B. Myopia was not so troublesome in the past.
C. Nearsightedness is increasing at an amazing speed.
D. Glasses for nearsighted people have developed a lot.

While doing homework, Seoyoung Jun closed one eye and successfully picked up her pencil. She realized that directing herself in a 3D space didn’t require both eyes. This surprised her so much that she did some research. And she learned the brain can deal with 3D information with poor vision (视力) or even without any vision. Then the idea for Mind Beacon was born.
It uses a thin line of light to collect 3D information about the positions of walls, furniture and other things. Then the light sends that information back to Mind Beacon, which then raises pins (大头针) to show where those obstacles (障碍物) are. Then blind people can “read” the positions of those pins to understand the location of obstacles in front and walk around them.
When the invention worked for the first time, Seoyoung didn’t believe it. She’d been up all night working on it. To guarantee that there wasn’t a mistake, she turned it off and started it up again and again. It had been seven long months of research and testing. Now this tool can help disabled people create a picture of their living areas in their minds.
The heart of Mind Beacon is a 3D depth sensor (传感器) that’s connected to a computer. That computer can control three motors(电动机). Each motor controls a pin that can move up and down.
When the sensor finds an obstacle, the pin rises. It can rise to three different heights. Each height shows the height of the obstacle. Someone who runs their hand over the pins can tell where the obstacle is and its height.
Mind Beacon won Seoyoung a place at the world’s high school research competition. Right now, she wants to improve it. She imagines in the future it can be connected to a smart phone, with more pins to show the exact height of the obstacle. It will feel like a map showing the location and size of the obstacle in front.
1. What made Seoyoung have the idea of inventing Mind Beacon?
A. The blind’s good sense of touch. B. The idea of winning a competition.
C. Her wish to bring convenience to the disabled. D. Her ability to pick up a pencil without full vision.
2. How does Mind Beacon help the blind?
A. By making it easier for them to use the Internet.
B. By letting them know the positions of obstacles.
C. By teaching them to describe dangerous obstacles.
D. By training them to remember maps of their living areas.
3. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How Mind Beacon works. B. How Mind Beacon was made.
C. The role of computers in Mind Beacon. D. The effect of Mind Beacon on the blind.
4. Which of the following best describes Seoyoung?
A. Caring but shy. B. Helpful but careless.
C. Talented and humorous. D. Creative and hard-working.

七、阅读与表达。
The Merchant of Venice is the important early works of Shakespeare, which is a comedy with a great satire. It’s about to make in 1596-1597. In the play Shakespeare not only speaks highly of love and friendship, but also mirrors the social background of that time.
Antonio had a friend named Bassanio who spent money without limitation. As a result, he ran out of his property in a short time. Bassanio fell in love with Portia, but he was required to play a large amount of money. So he went to Antonio for help. Antonio is also a wealthy Venetian merchant but he didn’t have so much cash. Antonio went to Shylock, a moneylender, for help. Having been scolded (责备) by Antonio for being cruel and greedy, Shylock hated him, however, he agreed to lend him the money on condition that Antonio would allow him to take a pound of his flesh if he could not repay him within three months. At last Antonio agreed to the contract (契约). With the money Antonio had borrowed from Shylock, Bassanio married Portia, but unluckily, Antonio lost all his ships at sea. He was not able to pay back to Shylock, and the Jew went to court of Venice to carry out his deal.
To save Antonio’s life, Portia pretended to be a famous lawyer. According to the contract, she agreed to Shylock’s request, but insisted a pound of meat must be cut by just a pound of flesh, no more and no less. At the same time, he was not allowed to let any of Antonio’s blood drop. The wise judge announced that according to the law if anyone tried to kill a citizen of Venice, everything he owned should be taken away from him. Shylock said that he would rather die if all his money and goods were taken away. Finally, Antonio gave up his part of Shylock’s money on condition that Shylock should leave the money to his own daughter and her husband upon his death. The cruel moneylender had to agree.
