This winter vacation, my friends and I went to Cairns in Australia as volunteers(志愿者). We worked in a zoo. Although the work was tiring, it’s still a good memory for me.
One day before lunch, I had to cover a road with mud (泥) and sand. It seemed that heavy rain had caused a lot of trouble. A strong, cowboy-looking man usually told us what to do. It was often hard work. When he came and asked for help, we did a guessing game to decide who would be the “lucky one”. The only girl on our team lost the game, but the man needed someone stronger to do the job, so I was picked. In the afternoon, we chopped (剁碎) fruit to feed animals. We also went to pick up kangaroo droppings (袋鼠粪便) and put them in boxes as “gifts” for dung beetles (蜣螂). When collecting the kangaroo poo, the biggest kangaroo left some fresh pieces at the scene.
During those few days, I saw how the zookeepers took care of the animals. None of the animals were treated like pets. When feeding birds, we tied pieces of fruit onto fresh tree branches (树枝) and left the branches in their cages. Even animals in the zoo lived with pride. I believe that it was an environment that provided everyone with a chance to be respected.
