Shanya Gill, a 12-year-old middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Society for Science's annual middle school competition for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, according to a press release from the organization.
Shanya's inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported Washington Post.“I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder's Country Inn, which started in the kitchen.“They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics and saw how common fires are, Shanya decided that she was going to do something about it.She spent more than a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could prevent the fire. That's because smoke detectors sense active fires through the smoke in the air, while Shanya's thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
Her complex system has two parts, a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer. The device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message alert.
Creating the prototype (原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the coding.“I had two designs, and the final device succeeded because it outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy.” Shanya wants to bring the costs down to $60 to make it even more affordable than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem and tried hard to solve it, and that's what we need to encourage all young people to do,” said Ajmera, president and CEO of the Society for Science. Her remarkable research not only reflects her talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.
4.What inspired Shanya to design the fire detection system
A.A neighbor's burnt kitchen.
B.A report on Washington Post.
C.A terrible restaurant experience.
D.A horrible fire in her community.
5.How can Shanya's fire detection system help prevent fire
A.By having people updated.
B.By sending a warning mail.
C.By controlling the water tap.
D.By putting out a heat source.
6.Why did the final device succeed
A.It was fast and precise.
B.It was cheap and simple.
C.It was complex and unique.
D.It was affordable and convenient.
7.What may Ajmera agree
A.Teenagers are the architect of the future.
B.A problem is a chance to bring out the best.
C.The thirst for knowledge is a never-ending one.
D.The best way to predict the future is to create it.

If someone asked whether you like the arts, you'd probably say you do—at least in theory.According to a survey, more than two thirds of U.S.adults say the arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences”.However, only 30 percent attended a concert of any type in 2017; 23 percent went to an art museum.Fewer than half actively created art of any kind.
The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed.Maybe you like to play a little background music while you work or do the chores, but most of us rarely, if ever, saw a live performance, let alone visited a gallery or watched a play.
Too often, we let the dull reality of life get in the way of the arts. But this is a mistake. The arts are the opposite of an escape from reality; they might just be the most realistic glimpse we ever get into the nature and meaning of life.If you make time for consuming and producing art—the same way you make time for work and exercise and family commitments—I assure you that you'll find your life getting fuller and happier.Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry.Or maybe your dizziness as you emerged from a narrow side street in an unfamiliar city and found yourself in a beautiful town square as if in a fantasy. They probably stimulated a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.
If you are among the people who feel that art is pure pleasure to experience and participate in, you might see it as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat art less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity. Then draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave art into your everyday life.
8.What prevents people from enjoying the arts
A.Shortage of time.
B.Avoidance of duty.
C.Lack of interest.
D.Art space unavailability.
9.What can we learn about the role of art according to the passage
A.It explores mysteries of nature.
B.It sparks emotional responses.
C.It enhances physical well-being.
D.It offers a getaway from daily life.
10.What will be talked about next in the passage
A.Ways to integrate art into routine.
B.Barriers to combining art and life.
C.Forms of distracting pleasures.
D.Benefits of engaging with art.
11.Which is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Art Journey:From Body to Mind
B.Embracing Art:From Luxury to Necessity
C.Art Pursuit:Transforming Dull into Full
D.Connecting with Art:From Reality to Fantasy

If you have always suspected that you might just bea mosquito magnet(招蚊子的人),scientists now have evidence for you:Mosquitoes indeed are attracted to certain humans more than others, according to a new study.
A research team at Rockefeller University sought to identify why certain people seem to draw more mosquitoes than others.Over the course of three years, researchers asked a group of 64 volunteers to wear nylon stockings on their arms for six hours a day over multiple days.Maria Elena De Obaldia, the study's first author, constructed a glass container in which researchers put two of the stockings. The study team then released yellow fever mosquitoes into the container and observed which stocking drew more insects.
This test allowed researchers to separate study participants into mosquito magnets, whose stockings drew lots of mosquitoes, and low at tractors, who didn't seem attractive to the insects. The scientists examined carefully the skin of the mosquito magnets and found 50 molecular compounds that were higher in these participants than the others.
“We didn't hold certain expectations about what we would find,” said Vosshall, one of the researchers. But one difference was particularly distinctive:The mosquito magnets had much higher rates of carboxylic acid(羧酸)on their skin than the low at tractors.Carboxylic acids are found in sebum, the oily substance that creates a barrier and helps protect our skin.
“The carboxylic acids are large molecules,”Vosshall explained.“They're not that smelly by themselves,” she said. But beneficial bacteria on the skin chew on these acids that produce the characteristic smell of humans, which may be what attracts mosquitoes, according to Vosshall.
Carboxylic acids are just one piece of the puzzle in explaining how the annoying insects might choose their targets.Body heat and the carbon dioxide we release when we breathe also attract mosquitoes to humans.
Scientists still don't know why carboxylic acids seem to attract mosquitoes so strongly. The next step might be to explore the effects of reducing carboxylic acids on the skin.
12.Why did the researchers carry out the test in the container
A.To free people from mosquitoes.
B.To identify mosquito magnets.
C.To distinguish certain mosquitoes.
D.To better attract other insects.
13.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A.The feature of human skin.
B.The definition of acid.
C.The expectation of the researchers.
D.The finding of the study.
14.What makes carboxylic acids smelly
A.Beneficial bacteria.
B.Body heat.
C.Carbon dioxide.
D.Human sweat.
15.What can we infer about mosquito magnets from the text
A.They never wear stockings in summer.
B.They feature higher body temperature.
C.Their root cause has remained unclear.
D.Their daily routine differs from others'.

For most people travelling abroad, their first choice is probably to rush directly to tourist sights. For me,I find lots of joy in grocery shopping on holiday.
As a vegetarian, finding restaurants that meet my needs is not always easy abroad. 16 The first thing I do, after dropping my bags off, is to go to a grocery store. That enables me to cook breakfast in the morning without walking around for hours trying to find “vegetarian breakfast” near me.
The variety of foods attracts me every time I travel somewhere new.In Malta, I found the most delicious chocolate-filled cakes, the ones I would struggle to find even in the UK. 17 I was so delighted that I could enjoy such an unexpected treat.Another surprise was their selection of ice cream available even in the smallest grocery stores.
18 Looking for smoked tofu and corn pancakes turns into quite a mission whenever I visit Cluj-Napoca in Romania. There is usually only one variety of smoked tofu, sold in a very small tub (食品盒) and only in the cafeteria section. 19 That is because they are never available at the smaller ones.
Grocery shopping on holiday sounds unusual. But it means being involved in the day-to-day lives of a country's citizens.I can pretend I am a local and put myself in their shoes.I can watch kids begging their parents for sweets, an international experience that needs no language, or watch couples pick up snacks and drinks for a party on a Friday night. 20
A.I ended up eating these every day for breakfast.
B.The challenge of finding food is interesting, too.
C.The smoked product is unique and specially packed.
D.So I always make sure to book a place with a kitchen.
E.It's an act of understanding people as much as of buying food.
F.Corn pancakes always require a trip to a bigger grocery store.
G.By wandering around in a new country, I start to see what they value.

Every time my family makes special plans, they end up getting canceled due to some incidents.Every time that happens, my parents would tell us to look on the bright side and make the best of a bad situation. However, I never managed to do that until this spring.
On a sunny morning last month, my aunt Jen invited us to the annual outdoor spring celebration at her farm.Since my family hadn't done anything different for ages, the whole family was very excited and everyone pulled his own weight to make sure everything goes as planned. In order to add more fun to this exciting trip, my little sister Indi and my little brother Tex even joined me to make an extra-special treat—cupcakes.
The picnic was intended to go from twelve to three. After double-checking the car, my parents loaded books, games, picnic blanket, and a whole big pack of food into the car.The moment of our departure finally arrived as the clock struck 11.However, everything went wrong the instant we bravely drove off.First, we had to stop and wait for Tex to find his shoes.Next, as we were driving down the road, we had to go back to the house because my mum forgot her wallet. Then, about halfway to Aunt Jen's house, we had to drive far out of our way to find a place for Indi to use the bathroom. After that, my parents decided it'd be quicker to take this one little side country road as a shortcut. But the shortcut ended up turning into a long cut! We drove forever on a winding road with wildflower field spreading endlessly out on both sides and the deep green pine trees going on and on within our sight.Spotting hundreds of birds flying in the sky, I was seized by a growing sense of desperation for I entirely had no idea when we could hit our destination.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just then, our car started making a strange noise.
At first, we kids weren't excited about the idea.

Dear committee members,
I wish to make a suggestion about starting a school art gallery.
There are many students who are good at painting in our school. The school art gallery can provide these students with a very good platform to display their own paintings, offer them a chance to admire the artistic achievements and the development of school culture as well as widen their knowledge. If you were to offer such an opportunity to the students who are fond of art, I believe they would give you a big surprise.
I would be more than happy if my suggestion could be considered.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
Just then, our car started making a strange noise.Obviously, there was something wrong with it and we had to pull over and call roadside service.Dad comforted us and claimed that help would arrive soon. But help did not arrive soon at all.So frustrated was I that I felt the whole world crumbled with tears streaming down my cheeks. Then came my dad's voice.“Look on the bright side,” said Dad.Our car couldn't have picked a prettier place to break down.Mum agreed, getting out the picnic blanket and suggested walking over to that gorgeous wildflower field and have our own springtime celebration.
At first, we kids weren't excited about the idea.We carried stuff over to the field, dragged ourselves down, and grumbled. But as we started looking around, cool things started happening.Hundreds of butterflies were dancing on the boundless wildflower field, looking like a beautiful scroll spreading out just for us.With a whooshing sound, a flock of birds rose up out of the pine trees, and flew around and around in the most amazing wavelike patterns, right over our heads! Just right there, we enjoyed our hand-made special treats, which were so delicious! It ended up one of the most amazing picnics in my life.

故填was created。]
40.to have discovered [考查非谓语动词。 故填to have discovered。]
A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains之间为主动关系,用动词-ing形式;空处位于句首,首字母大写。
not only...but(also)...,意为“不但……而且……”。故填but。]
45.who/that [考查定语从句。 故填who/that。]
