Conventionally butterflies were regarded not as fascinating subjects for close observation but as symbols of shallowness. But Eleanor Granville treated them with scientific seriousness.
In her thirties, though suffering from a marriage where the husband was violent and even turned her family against her, Granville sought comfort by studying moths and butterflies. She travelled around the countryside with local girls, beating bushes to catch falling larvae (幼虫), and recruited her servants as assistants to collect specimens (样本).Because of unusual generosity in paying for a fine specimen, she soon accumulated a substantial collection of butterflies. After bringing larvae home, she meticulously logged their growth, providing some of the earliest detailed accounts of insect life cycles.
However, wandering the countryside with a collecting net was considered weird behavior for anyone back then, let alone a woman, and she was accused of going out dressed like a “gypsy”.
Besides her own extensive research, Granville exchanged letters and butterflies with other collectors.Another enthusiast William Vernon reported that she had owned “the noblest collections of butterflies, all English, which has shamed us”.She sent 100 examples to the Royal Society and also sent James Petiver, England's most celebrated butterfly expert, boxes of carefully pinned butterflies, including several that had been previously unknown, and notably the one later named the Granville fritillary whose wings carry striking brown and yellow patterns, a species of special concern due to the decline of the total number under the influence of food loss and hotter weather.
Eleanor Granville remains the only British naturalist to have left her name to a native butterfly species.A pioneer in the study of entomology (昆虫学), Granville helped make it an academic subject.Regretfully, only two moths and a butterfly of Granville's precious specimens are still preserved in London's Natural History Museum. Her name lives on the butterflies she loved.

A groundbreaking new study finds that coffee beans are bigger and more plentiful when birds and bees team up to protect and pollinate coffee plants.
Without these winged helpers, some travelling thousands of miles, coffee farmers would see a 25% drop in crops, a loss of roughly $1,066 per acre of coffee. That's important for the $26 billion coffee industry—including consumers, farmers, and corporations who depend on nature's unpaid labor—but the research goes beyond that.
The study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is the first to show, using real-world experiments at 30 coffee farms, that the contributions of nature—in this case, bee pollination combined with pest control by birds—are larger than their individual contributions.
“Until now, researchers have typically calculated the benefits of nature separately, and then simply added them up, which actually underestimates the benefits biodiversity provides to agriculture and human well-being,” says lead expert Alejandra.“But nature is an interacting system, full of important synergies (协同).We show the ecological and economic importance of these interactions in one of the first experiments in actual farms.”
For the experiment, researchers dealt with coffee plants across 30 farms, excluding birds and bees with a combination of large nets and small bags. They tested four key situations: bird activity alone, bee activity alone, no bird or bee activity at all, and finally, a natural environment, where bees and birds were free to pollinate and eat insects like the coffee berry borer, one of the most damaging pests affecting coffee production worldwide. The combined positive effects of birds and bees on fruit set, fruit weight and fruit uniformity—key factors in quality and price—were greater than their individual effects, the study shows.
“Birds, bees, and millions of other species support our lives and livelihoods, but face threats like habitat destruction and climate change,” says Alejandra.“One important reason we measure these contributions is to help protect the many species that we depend on, and sometimes take for granted.”
8.What does the new research focus on

Babies are surrounded by human language, always listening and processing.Eventually, they put sounds together to produce a “Daddy” or a “Mama”.But what still confuses neuroscientists is exactly how the brain works to put it all together.
To figure it out, a team of researchers turned to a frequent stand-in (代替) for babies when it comes to language learning: the song-learning zebra finch.“We've known songbirds learn their song by first forming a memory of their father's song or another adult's song. Then they use that memory to guide their song learning,” said Neuroscientist Todd Roberts.“It's been a long-term goal of the field to figure out how or where in the brain this memory is.This type of imitative learning that birds do is very similar to the type of learning that we engage in regularly—particularly when we're young, we use it to guide our speech learning.”
Roberts and his team had a feeling that the interface between sensory areas and motor areas in the brain was critical for this process, and they focused on a group of brain cells called the NIf.
“In order to prove that we could identify these circuits, we thought if we could implant a false memory.” First, they used a virus to cause the neurons in the birds' NIf to become sensitive to light. Then, using a tiny electrode as a flashlight, they activated the neurons. The length of each pulse of light corresponded with the amount of time the neurons would fire. And the birds' brains interpreted that time period as the length of each note.
Soon enough, the birds began to practice the notes they had learned, even though they never really heard the sounds.Amazingly, the birds produced them in the correct social situations. The researchers say this is the first time anybody has found exactly a part of the brain necessary for generating the sorts of memories needed to copy sounds.
“This line of research is going to help us identify where in the brain we encode memories of relevant social experiences that we use to guide learning. We know that there are several neurodevelopmental disorders in people that have really far-reaching effects on this type of learning.”
12.The zebra finch is researched because its song-learning mode .
A.decides whether it will sing songs
B.helps it to say “Daddy” or “Mama”
C.is like the way babies learn speech
D.reflects its talent for imitating its father's song

A.The interface in the brain.
B.Guidance from adults.
C.The way of regular learning.
D.Imitative learning type like birds'.
14.What can we learn from the research led by Roberts
A.Some neurons were activated by the use of an electrode.
B.A new memory was implanted to generate new neurons.
C.A bird sang what it had heard before.
D.Birds became sensitive to light due to new social situations.
15.What do the Roberts' team expect of this line of research
A.A change in our way of listening and processing.
B.Identification of neurodevelopmental disorders.
C.A chance to learn better with relevant social experiences.
D.A better knowledge of the secrets of learning.

Choosing the Right Path to Be a “Better” Person
Life is a constant exercise in self-improvement.In the rush to achieve, the idea of being “better” can become lost sometimes. You may always wonder how to improve yourself and fulfill your dreams in an easier way. 16
Explore your talents.
Everybody has some outstanding skills or interests. So it's often necessary to be patient and try many things before you find one that suits you.
17 For example, people loving adventure may not be interested in the quiet chess club, but someone who enjoys other quiet activities might be. Determining who you enjoy being around may help you know what you'll enjoy.
18
No matter how much money you make, you will not be happy if you spend your entire life doing something you hate. It's important to at least devote some of your time to what makes you happy.
If you're particularly unhappy at your job, consider why. 19 If you feel your job isn't meaningful,or isn't in line with your values, consider finding another job.
Experience something new.
Research has shown that when we're in our comfort zone ,we aren't as productive as we are when we step just beyond it. 20 Because of that,we may react slowly to our own positive experiences. It's important to have new experiences and interactions with others, even when those are a little scary.Doing so can help you achieve more.
A.Do what you love.
B.Here are some tips for you.
C.Register in a class you're not interested in.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My five-year-old daughter Ruthie seemed very small standing at the base of the huge rock-climbing wall as a young employee double-checked her equipment. It was our second time at this indoor crowded climbing gym.On our first visit, Ruthie had begged my husband and me to let her try climbing the wall, but I denied her, afraid that she was undersized.
But life had dramatically changed since then. After receiving a cancer diagnosis, I felt that my life was too short to deny her a chance.I stood outside the waiting area, watching the employee attach Ruthie to a safety rope. Then he gave her a thumbs-up sign, and my daughter began climbing!
With that rope, she couldn't possibly fall. She might slip, but she wouldn't fall.I was surprised at how she did that so easily and joyfully.“If my cancer is the rock wall, I want to be Ruthie,” I thought.
When she touched the ground again, I leaned over the low fence and asked, “How do you do that?”
“I just trust the rope. It's very easy,” she said with a shrug, and started on her second climbing.
Apparently, if I had known the secret, I could have climbed the wall myself. When I was sixteen, I once failed to climb a rock wall. With added weight and reduced muscle tone, I doubted if I could even do it.I didn't see any other moms trying to climb the wall.Several months earlier, embarrassment would have stopped me from trying. But my cancer did funny things to my brain. It made me realize that I needed to be braver than I thought.
With determination, I decided to try it and the same young employee checked my safety rope and gave me the thumbs-up sign.As I began my climb, I was excited by my own bravery for trying something so new. However, only ten feet up, my fingers and toes started to tire, and there was absolutely no place to rest.My excitement began to disappear and I was afraid that I was going to slip and fall.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
But I knew if I wanted to make it, I had to trust the rope.
That day's successful experience inspired me in my cancer battle.

Dear Jim,
You're quite right about ordering meals online being popular in China, especially for people who are too busy (or just too lazy) to cook.
I often order food online when my parents are at work, or when my family wants to try something that tastes different. The best about it is that it's convenient. One just needs to place an order and pay for it online. Then, steaming-hot food arrives at your doorstep within an hour. Moreover, there are many choices. We can order and taste diverse cuisines from various restaurants. It has also created millions of jobs and boosted the catering industry.
Does it sound attractive We can give it a try when you come to China!
Yours,
Li Hua

[参考范文]
But I knew if I wanted to make it, I had to trust the rope. I took a deep breath.Immediately, I felt the safety from the rope.I realized that even though slipping might make me nervous, I would be perfectly safe. With new-found trust in the rope, I started climbing again. As I continued, my rope caught me many times. And I also reminded myself to be brave.Five minutes later, I was at the top of the wall.I made it!
That day's successful experience inspired me in my cancer battle. During the medical treatment, I kept telling myself the secret of doing something hard and scary: just trust the rope.My family, my friends, even my doctors could all be the rope that I could rely on all the time. They tried their best to help and support me, just like the rope that had lifted me up that day at the indoor climbing gym.Their love, care and company gave me the courage and confidence in the battle against my cancer.
