Mother's Gift
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang,I would race breathlessly home.My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always.I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had prepared my lines so hard with me.But no matter how easily I acted at home,as soon as I stepped onto the stage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally,my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt me,especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day.But she sensed my pain.Instead of suggesting we practise my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine was turning green.Under the huge trees,we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英) are bunched in the grass,as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold.I watched my mother bend down by one dandelion.“I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds ,”she said, pulling it up by its roots.“From now on,we'll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions ,” I said.“All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously.“Yes,every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it ?” She asked thoughtfully.I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.“And that is true of people too ,” she added.“Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”Knowing that she had guessed my pain,I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,”she said, encouraging and comforting me as she always did.________________________________

“But you will be a beautiful narrator,”she said, encouraging and comforting me as she always did. My beloved mom, wearing a shining smile on her face, added.“The narrator's part is important, too.”Thanks to her encouragement, which calmed me down gradually,I began to accept the narrator's part was of vital significance.Time went so fast that it reached to the performance day.At first I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket.I knew my mom passed the flower to me,which meant to be in company with me.I kept calm all the way through the performance and was praised as the best narrator.

Addyson Moffitt is an 8-year-old from Kansas City,Missouri.Maurine Chelagat is a 9-year-old from a village in Kenya called Bartabwa. It might not seem as if the girls have much in common, but when they met at a dinner two years ago,in Kansas City, they instantly hit it off.“We had this one little red ball to play with,” Addyson told others.“We didn't have any electronics or phones,no tablet or TV.It was just us playing.” Addyson and Maurine still keep in touch now.
课时分层作业(十二)
The dinner was hosted by the non-profit group World Vision International. In some parts of the world people must walk several miles each day to collect water from a stream or another water source.Often, the water is polluted,World Vision builds wells, pipelines, and rain catchers in these communities.Addyson was at the dinner because her family supports World Vision.Maurine was there because her village had been without clean water.World Vision fixed that by building a water station there.Addyson was inspired by Maurine.“People helped Maurine so she could have clean water, and kids are dying because they don't have it,” she says,“I want to help.”
Races are one way World Vision raises money to pay for its water projects.Runners pledge to run a race, often a 26-mile marathon or 13-mile half marathon. They ask people to support them by donating to World Vision.Addyson decided to run the 2017 Kansas City Half Marathon for World Vision. At age 7,she was one of the youngest-ever runners in the race, and had to get special permission to participate.
Addyson spent four months training with her parents, waking up before 6 a.m.to run.Meanwhile, she started fundraising(募捐) by clearing the plates at a restaurant for tips and asking friends to make donations as birthday presents.By October 2017,when Addyson ran the race, she'd raised more than $20,000.She's the youngest person in World Vision history to raise more than $10,000.In 2018,she ran again and raised $36,000.But Addyson's work is not finished.“My goal is for every kid to have clean water,” she says.

A vacation often means rest and relaxation, but more and more people are looking at travelling as an opportunity to help others and give back.
Don Germaise is a familiar face to many in Tampa Bay,but this former TV reporter's life has changed a bit.“In the TV business you see the best and the worst the world has to offer, and at some point,it just occurred to me:I just need to do something to make the world a better place,” he explained.
He now travels the world, volunteering his time to help others.“Here's the best part about a volunteer vacation. You're not stuck at a hotel doing tours that everyone else does,” Germaise said.“You're meeting regular people, living with regular people and helping regular people all over the world.”
Travel Writer Joe Miragliotta says that's exactly why more people are spending time volunteering on vacation.“Travellers, especially millennials (千禧一代) like myself, are becoming more socially conscious when it comes to choosing where they go,” Miragliotta said.“They want to connect with the communities and causes they really care about.”
He recently took some time out of a trip to San Francisco to help out at a local farm.“Here, volunteers are growing healthy foods for the community, and they give it right back for free;and you know you can tend the vegetable gardens, help clean the orchard—lots of fun activities,” Miragliotta explained.
Volunteering doesn't take up your entire vacation. You can do it for a few hours or even a few days. It's all up to you.“With a kid...when you do something as simple as giving him or her a pencil when they never had a pencil for school, the look in their eyes is so unbelievable,” Germaise said.“It's like they got a tablet. It's the greatest feeling in the world.”

Good afternoon,everyone,
It's a great privilege for me to share with you my opinions on what we should do to reduce haze and keep a blue sky over our heads.
As we all know, haze is one of the major problems causing air pollution.First of all,we should apply the most cutting-edge technologies in order to develop new forms of energy, and the local governments should order high-polluting factories to close or cut down production.Besides,we should choose public transportation to cut down the number of motor vehicles on the road.In a word, all effective measures must be taken to make our sky blue!

Thanks for your listening.
故选A。]
3.A [段落大意题。根据最后一段可知,Addyson在餐厅收盘子挣小费,邀请朋友们捐款作为生日礼物。由此可推知,本段主要讲述Addyson 为了筹款所付出的努力。故选A。]
