Humour Dictionary
Observational humour is based on comments (评论) about everyday life.Comedians who use this type of humour often start by saying,“Have you ever noticed how…?”Then, they make funny comments about everyday things such as work, marriage, children, etc. This trend began in the 1970s with US comedians such as Bill Cosby and Jay Leno.
Slapstick humour is very physical. It involves (包含) characters falling down, hitting people or crashing into things. This type of comedy is very common in cartoons such as Tom and Jerry,Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.Typical comedians, such as Laurel,Hardy (from The Three Stooges),Charlie Chaplin,Rowan Atkinson are people's favourites.
Self-deprecating humour involves making jokes about yourself or drawing attention to your faults.George Costanza from the comedy series Seinfeld uses a lot of self-deprecating humour, often making jokes about his lack of hair, his weight and his shallow personality (肤浅的个性).Comedians such as Chris Farley,Conan O'Brien,David Letterman and Woody Allen also use self-deprecating comedy.
Toilet humour often focuses on the noises and functions of the body. It's often viewed as rude, impolite and childish, although many people find it very funny. There's a hilarious scene involving toilet humour in the film Along Came Polly.Reuben (Ben Stiller) is invited back to Polly's(Jennifer Aniston) apartment. After dinner,Reuben accidentally blocks the toilet. In an attempt to unblock it,he uses her hand-embroidered towel (a gift from her grandmother) and an expensive loofah.Eventually, the toilet overflows, leaving Reuben with no option but to leave.

B
When John Todd was a child,he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems.A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older,John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college,John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)?Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants,he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did.He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥).First,he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited.Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks,John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it!Within weeks,it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years,John has taken on many big jobs.He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage(污水)from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou,a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design”is the name John gives to what he does.“Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,”he says.“You put organisms in new relationships and observe what's happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
4.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs
A.He was fond of travelling.
B.He enjoyed being alone.
C.He had an inquiring mind.
D.He longed to be a doctor.
√
根据第一段中的“observing how nature solved problems”、“When he got older,John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.”和第二段中的“John went back to observing nature and asking questions”以及第二段中John思考的两个问题可以看出,John是一个喜欢刨根问底、喜欢探索的人,故C项正确。]
√
5.Why did John put the sludge into the tanks
A.To feed the animals.
B.To build an ecosystem.
C.To protect the plants.
D.To test the eco-machine.
根据第三段中的“The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge…placed them in the tanks and waited.” 第四段中的“all that was left was pure water”表明了将污泥放入水箱之后的变化。
6.What is the author's purpose in mentioning Fuzhou
A.To review John's research plans.
B.To show an application of John's idea.
C.To compare John's different jobs.
D.To erase doubts about John's invention.
√
上文讲到了John的发明成功了,根据第五段的中心句“Over the years,John has taken on many big jobs.”
√
7.What is the basis for John's work
A.Nature can repair itself.
B.Organisms need water to survive.
C.Life on Earth is diverse.
D.Most tiny creatures live in groups.
本文主要围绕John的疑问“A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived…if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.” 正是在这个疑问的指引下,John发明了“生态设计”,因此,John发明的根源就在于大自然的自我修复能力,且最后一段中的“Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”
C
We know that spending lots of time sitting down isn't good for us,but just how much exercise is needed to match the negative health effects of sitting down all day?Research suggests about 30-40 minutes per day of building up a sweat should do it.
Up to 40 minutes of “moderate-to-vigorous(温和又有力的)intensity physical activity”every day is about the right amount to balance out 10 hours of sitting still, the research says—although any amount of exercise or even just standing up helps to some extent.
That's based on a study published in 2020 analyzing nine previous studies, involving a total of 44,370 people in four different countries who were wearing some form of fitness tracker. The analysis found the risk of death among those with a more sedentary (久坐的)lifestyle went up as time spent engaging in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity went down.In other words, putting in some reasonably intensive activities—cycling, brisk walking, gardening—can lower your risk of an earlier death.
While analyses like this one always require some detailed dot-joining across separate studies with different volunteers, timescales and conditions, the benefit of this particular piece of research is that it relied on relatively objective data from wearables—not data self-reported by the participants.
The research based on fitness trackers is broadly in line with the 2020 WHO guidelines, which recommend 150-300 mins of moderate intensity or 75-150 mins of vigorous intensity physical activity every week to balance out sedentary behaviour.
Walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift, playing with children and pets, taking part in yoga or dancing, doing household chores, walking, and cycling are all put forward as ways in which people can be more active—and if you can't manage the 30-40 minutes right away, the researchers say, start off small.
8.How does the author start the text
A.By telling stories. B.By listing numbers.
C.By giving examples. D.By raising questions.
根据第一段中的“We know that spending lots of time sitting down isn't good for us,but just how much exercise is needed to match the negative health effects of sitting down all day?”
√
9.What did the research find
A.The longer you sit still, the earlier you will die.
B.The more you exercise, the healthier you will be.
C.Productivity can be improved through physical activities.
D.Proper intensive activities help reduce the risk of earlier death.
√
根据第三段中的“In other words, putting in some reasonably intensive activities—cycling, brisk walking, gardening—can lower your risk of an earlier death.”
10.Why is the research reliable

We visited Rome for the first time a few years ago,and my memories aren't ones of buildings, statues,or even the food. It's the selfie sticks (自拍杆)—being sold on every street corner, and being put to use everywhere we went. When travelling, people were photographing themselves, often without bothering to look at all the beauty behind them.
Research shows that we're distracted by photography. When we take pictures,we may improve our chances of remembering the facts, like where we were or what we ate.But we miss out on other details, and don't see the “big picture”because we're too focused on the small picture on our screen. What's more,if we rely on photographs to store our experiences,we spend less time practising the act of remembering. And by not stretching our recall muscles regularly,we don't strengthen particular memories.
As a result,we may end up with very shallow records of the past. And that's especially true if we're always photographing ourselves.Selfies reveal little about the “big picture”—what's happening around us,or how we were really feeling at the time.
So take photographs to remind you of key details,to be creative, and to show to family and friends. But get into the habit of capturing experiences with your mind too.Consciously take in everything around you.Use all your senses, not just your eyes.Be aware of your thoughts and feelings, too.
It's a great habit to get into. You'll experience more if you're not fussing with (瞎忙一气)your phone. You'll create more durable memories by returning to the photos again and again. You'll also be exercising your brain, which is the best way to keep it working well for everything. And in the process,I bet you'll discover that your memory is by far the most interesting lens(透镜) through which to look back at your past.

As scheduled,we will meet at the school gate at 8:00 am on August 6,and then take buses there. As we know,we students are spending most of our time on the campus so that we are almost cut off from the outside world.Hopefully, the excursion will provide us with a
good chance to get closer to nature, which will definitely contribute to our physical and mental health. What's more,it will surely broaden our horizons by experiencing the local cultures.
We're eagerly expecting your coming.
Yours,

I was 8 years old.I had little need of luggage. But something about that old leather suitcase appealed to my imagination. In fact,I found it in my grandmother's attic.Grandmother didn't object, and so the suitcase came to live beneath my bed.I didn't use the old suitcase before that day.
It was a cloudy fall morning in our North Carolina town, and a fine mist wet the fallen leaves.I was angry. My mother had slighted me somehow, though now I have no idea what stirred up my anger.I was upset, and I wanted to make her pay.I wanted to give her a taste of what life would be like without me.
I would run away.
“Goodbye,Mom.”
I stood outside the kitchen door, the suitcase grabbed firmly in hand.I wore my red overcoat and gray ski cap, looking the part.“Goodbye,Mom,”I repeated twice more to make sure she'd heard.
At last,Mom appeared, wiping her hands on a dish towel. She looked at me quickly.I lifted the suitcase a little just to make sure she didn't miss it.
“I'm leaving,”I said.
I'd rehearsed for the expected reaction. The plan was to let her feel guilty and beg for a minute or two and then I would give in after I was sure of her regret.
“Did you pack a lunch?”
Mom's question knocked me off balance.Where were the tears?The begging?“I'm leaving,”I said.“I'm running away.For… ever.”I repeated,sure it would change her mind.Instead,she smiled.
“Well, would you like me to fix you something?A sandwich?A bag of chips?I just made chocolate chip cookies.”
“I'm really going,”I said.“I can see that.”
“Maybe a cookie.”And then,“All right,I'm off.”The misty rain lent drama to my journey.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
As I stepped onto the front walk(步道),a fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie was put in my coat pocket.__________________________

As I stepped onto the front walk(步道),a fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie was put in my coat pocket.I looked back at our big yellow house.I stared at the front door, waiting for it to fling open.I watched the lace curtains in the living room window for movement. My mother didn't show up.So I had no choice but to continue.I got to the sidewalk and made a right, moving slowly up the avenue.I stopped at the corner and looked back at our house.I had no idea what would come next.Feeling the cookie that my mother had given me,I hesitated.
I bit the cookie and thought that my mother deserved one last chance to stop me,so a moment later,I was back in the doorway of my home.I peeked in.My mother was on the couch, positioned just right for a view out of a large window.I stepped into the room, still holding that suitcase.“I'm happy you're home,”she said. She'd been crying. She managed a smile when I stepped over to her.My anger, disappointment and heartbreak faded away.I knew she loved me.I slowly opened the suitcase so she could see what I had packed for my runaway journey:Nothing. It was empty.I often recall the lesson of that day:My mother loved me enough to let me find my own way back home.
