Born with hearing loss, Emily Jensen faced difficulties while pursuing (追求) a career she truly felt passionate about. As others doubted her abilities, all she hoped for was a chance to unlock her true potential (潜能) and feel a sense of belonging in the workplace. Jensen’s chance finally materialized when Cornell offered her an opportunity she had been seeking for nearly a decade.
Jensen first applied to the university for a job opening as a human resources (HR) assistant at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) . Although she didn’t make it to the final round of interviews, a worker approached Jensen and suggested she connect with Larry, the head for human resources at the ILR School.
“They saw something in me,” Jensen said. “So, I met with Larry and his team. They were looking to develop their department and decided to bring me on board as an HR assistant.”
When Jensen first came on board at ILR, she needed special technology for her computer. Because of her hearing loss, additional equipment, such as a soundbar, is necessary to hear. “My team provided this from day one,” Jensen said. “It feels really good to be able to come into an environment that was already set up for my success from the very beginning.”
For many, disclosing a disability is not an easy thing to do, especially in the workplace. Fortunately, the ILR School and Jensen’s new HR team have created an environment where she not only feels comfortable doing so but is also valued for the role she plays.
“It’s a testament (证明) to my team and Larry, who is my biggest cheerleader,” Jensen said. “It was he who brought me on and saw what I was capable of, which led me to develop so much trust in myself.”

When love and the Roaring Twenties meet, you get The Great Gatsby. When books and TikTok, a social media app, come together, you get BookTok, the suitable side of the social media platform where readers recommend, review, and theorize about their favorite books and authors.
This Internet gathering has become a leading force in the book world, changing non-readers into people who can’t stop, giving literary fans their next excitement, and selling copies in the process. Part of what makes BookTok unique is that readers’ taste and enthusiasm determine what wins popularity on the app, not necessarily marketing money from publishers or authors, creating a kind of closeness among users, like they’re getting recommendations from friends.
“I never had close friends who read the same kind of books as me,” Jessi, 23, said. “And I wasted time on short videos, until the time I hit BookTok by accident, when I realized I could turn that wasted time into reading.” After following other book accounts for a long time, she started creating her own videos on her account to share her own experiences with books, emotions, and all. “I just really wanted to share my own feelings,” Jessi says.
This form of influence has proven to have real effects. BookTok, aside from having more than 108 billion views on TikTok, has helped enhance book sales across the charts. Data by NPD BookScan revealed 825 million books were sold in the U. S. in 2021, up 9 percent from the previous year, which was the highest number it had seen since 2004. “I feel confident in saying this is the biggest social media impact we’ve seen concentrated on a single platform since I’ve been tracking books,” a director at NPD BookScan wrote in a post.
But it’s not just for readers. Tessa Bailey, the author of It Happened One Summer, was surprised to discover one day her novel was selling better than usual. “I had been doing this for ten years. Why is this one selling so well ” Bailey said. “People are talking about it on BookTok. So I got in there. BookTok is from readers and for readers. And over the last year or so, I’ve communicated with readers.”
28.What makes BookTok special
A.There is a wide selection of books. B.Creative advertisements are placed.
C.Popular book lists are updated quickly. D.Readers’ interest determines the hits.
29.What change did Jessi have after using BookTok
A.She learned to deal with loneliness B.She desired to write book reviews.
C.She made a lot of money from short videos. D.She started reviewing others’ book accounts.
30.What does the underlined word “enhance” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Improve. B.Balance. C.Decrease. D.Recover.
31.What does the example of Tessa Bailey show about BookTok’s role
A.It boosts people’s desire to express themselves. B.It increases readers’sense of belonging
C.It helps authors connect with readers. D.It provides inspiration for authors.
In the ancient walled city of Sana’a, mud (泥) skyscrapers rise high into the sky. The towering structures are built entirely out of earth and decorated with amazing geometric patterns. The local mud architecture is so unique that the city has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. .
Even though the buildings in Sana’a are thousands of years old, the ancient structures are still inhabited today and most remain private houses. It is easy to see why these mud buildings have not lost their appeal — they are well-insulated (隔热的), sustainable and extremely adaptable for modern use. “It is the architecture of the future,” says Damluji, co-founder of the Mud Brick Architecture Foundation.
Architects around the world are reviving (复兴) raw-earth construction as they seek to construct sustainable buildings that can survive extreme weather events such as flash floods and intense heat. Could this ancient form of architecture influence the design of our future homes
The construction industry accounts for 38% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The building sector has an important role to play if the world is to meet the goal of reaching net zero by 2050. Concrete, a common modern construction material, has a huge carbon footprint. Replacing concrete with less polluting materials is important to achieving our climate goals, scientists warn.
The ancient material, mud, could be the perfect sustainable replacement for concrete, according to Damluji. Constructing with mud has a very low impact on the environment and the material itself is fully recyclable. She says, “If you want to pull down a wall or change the design, you can recycle all the materials.” An added benefit is that mud buildings are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This reduces the need for air conditioning units, which consume large amounts of electricity and contain refrigerants (制冷剂) that make up greenhouse gas emissions. Mud structures are also incredibly strong and resistant to extreme weather, such as heatwaves, floods and droughts, which scientists say will become more frequent and intense as temperatures continue to rise.
Therefore, people who wish to live in a modern, comfortable home should consider one made of mud. Overall, it makes for highly advanced as well as sustainable design.
32.Which of the following is TRUE about mud materials according to the passage
A.They can reduce the chance of extreme weather events.
B.They can be ideal for sustainable construction of the future.
C.They might produce a lot of greenhouse gas emissions.
D.They might cause substantial temperature changes.
33.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Mud might be an important solution to the climate crisis.
B.Rebuilding mud construction would take great efforts.
C.Mud has become architects’ favourite building material.
D.The mud buildings in Sana’a are no longer suitable to live in.
34.What’s the author’s attitude towards raw-earth construction in the building industry
A.Cautious. B.Indifferent. C.Critical. D.Supportive.
35.What might be the best title of the passage
A.Historic Cities Mark Human Civilization B.Construction Industry Threatens Climate Goals
C.Modern Architecture Survives Extreme Weather D.Ancient Material Makes for Future House Designs
The act of making and being a friend is as simple as it is difficult. Here are a few tips to help you make new friends as well as to take better care of the friendships you already have.
Accept the awkwardness. It’s a little bit awkward to reach out to someone you don’t know well — whether that’s sending the first text messages or starting small talk in the elevator. 36 Otherwise you can’t make any new friends.
37 Actually this advice is based on a well-known theory and some field research. Gallian Sandstorm, a senior lecturer in psychology at the university of Essex in the UK, has done research on something called the “liking gap”, which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody doesn’t like you very much is wrong. 38 Instead, remember that when you talk to someone else, you are actually brightening their day.
Invest in activities that you love. Ask anyone about how to make friends and they will most likely tell you to try a new hobby. It might sound empty, but it works. 39 Then people will be drawn to you because you will be in the right place.
Be present. The planet is warming, and there is so much good television out there to watch. We get it. But if you want to keep your friendships, you have to show up for them. 40
A.So don’t listen to it.
B.But you have to accept it.
C.Do the things you are crazy about.
D.You don’t have to be interested in just one thing.
E.You have to listen and notice things about your friend.
F.Remember that people will like you more than you think they will.
G.We have a few tips for being present and engaged with your friends.

Next we’ll start making our way toward the city’s biggest park which includes an amazing lake some unique birds and flowers. 28. 根据第二段中的“Part of what makes BookTok unique is that readers’ taste and enthusiasm determine what wins popularity on the app, not necessarily marketing money from publishers or authors, creating a kind of closeness among users, like they’re getting recommendations from friends.(BookTok的独特之处在于,读者的品味和热情决定了什么能在该应用上赢得人气,而不一定是出版商或作者的营销资金,在用户之间创造了一种亲密感,就像他们从朋友那里得到了推荐一样。)”
根据第三段中的““I never had close friends who read the same kind of books as me,” Jessi, 23, said. “And I wasted time on short videos, until the time I hit BookTok by accident, when I realized I could turn that wasted time into reading.”(“我从来没有亲密的朋友和我读同样的书。” 23岁的杰西说,“我把时间浪费在短视频上,直到有一次我偶然上了BookTok,我意识到我可以把浪费的时间转化为阅读。”)”可知,在使用Booktok之前,他没有与他读同样书籍的亲密朋友,所以Jessi将时间浪费在短视频上,使用之后,意识到将时间转化为阅读,结合下文中的“After following other book accounts for a long time, she started creating her own videos on her account to share her own experiences with books, emotions, and all. “I just really wanted to share my own feelings,” Jessi says.(在长期关注其他图书账户后,她开始在自己的账户上制作自己的视频,分享自己在书籍、情感等方面的经历。“我真的很想分享我自己的感受,”杰西说。)”可知,在关注了其他的图书账户后,开始制作自己的视频,分享自己在书籍、情感等方面的经历,可推知,Jessi开始渴望评论书籍并分享她的阅读体验。故选B。
30.词义猜测题。根据划线单词前的“This form of influence has proven to have real effects.(这种形式的影响已被证明具有实际效果。) ”可知,这种形式已经证明具有实际效果,结合划线单词后的“Data by NPD BookScan revealed 825 million books were sold in the U. S. in 2021, up 9 percent from the previous year, which was the highest number it had seen since 2004.(NPD BookScan的数据显示,2021年美国销售了8.25亿本书,比前一年增长了9%,这是自2004年以来的最高数字。)”可知,BookTok这种形式产生的实际效果就是提高了图书的销售量,结合划线单词所在的句子“BookTok, aside from having more than 108 billion views on TikTok, has helped…book sales across the charts. (BookTok已经帮助……各大排行榜上的图书销量。)”可知,此处指的是BookTok已经帮助提高了各大排行榜上的图书销量,符合语境,所以划线单词的意思应与“提高”意义相近。故选A项。
根据尾段中的““I had been doing this for ten years. Why is this one selling so well ” Bailey said. “People are talking about it on BookTok. So I got in there. BookTok is from readers and for readers. And over the last year or so, I’ve communicated with readers.”(“我做这个已经十年了。为什么这个卖得这么好?”贝利说。“人们在BookTok上讨论这件事。所以我进去了。BookTok来自读者,也是为读者服务的。在过去一年左右的时间里,我与读者进行了交流。”)”可知,作家贝利发现BookTok来自读者,也是为读者服务,在过去一年左右的时间里,贝利与读者进行了交流,由此可知,BookTok有助于作者与读者建立联系。故选C项。

32.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“It is easy to see why these mud buildings have not lost their appeal—they are well-insulated (隔热的), sustainable and extremely adaptable for modern use. “It is the architecture of the future,” says Damluji, co-founder of the Mud Brick Architecture Foundation. (不难理解为何这些泥制建筑仍未失去其魅力——它们隔热性好、可持续性强,且非常适合现代使用。“这是未来的建筑,”泥砖建筑基金会联合创始人Damluji说道)”可知,泥土材料被视为未来可持续建筑的潜在选择。故选B。
33.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“The ancient material, mud, could be the perfect sustainable replacement for concrete, according to Damluji. Constructing with mud has a very low impact on the environment and the material itself is fully recyclable.( Damluji认为,古老的泥土材料可能是混凝土的理想可持续替代品。用泥土建造对环境的影响非常小,且材料本身完全可回收)”以及“An added benefit is that mud buildings are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This reduces the need for air conditioning units, which consume large amounts of electricity and contain refrigerants (制冷剂) that make up greenhouse gas emissions. Mud structures are also incredibly strong and resistant to extreme weather, such as heatwaves, floods and droughts, which scientists say will become more frequent and intense as temperatures continue to rise.(另一个好处是,泥制建筑在冬天保暖、夏天凉爽。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Therefore, people who wish to live in a modern, comfortable home should consider one made of mud. Overall, it makes for highly advanced as well as sustainable design.(因此,希望住在现代、舒适住宅中的人应考虑泥制住宅。总的来说,它实现了高度先进且可持续的设计。)”以及全文内容可知,作者提到了生土建筑的多个优点,如可持续性、低环境影响、材料可回收性以及在极端天气下的出色表现等。这些描述都表明作者对生土建筑持支持态度。故选D。
35.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Architects around the world are reviving (复兴) raw-earth construction as they seek to construct sustainable buildings that can survive extreme weather events such as flash floods and intense heat. Could this ancient form of architecture influence the design of our future homes (随着世界各地建筑师寻求建造能够抵御洪水肆虐和酷暑等极端天气的可持续建筑,他们正在复兴生土建筑。这种古老的建筑形式能否影响我们未来住宅的设计呢?)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了古老的泥土材料如何成为未来可持续建筑的理想选择,并详细描述了其优点和在现代建筑中的应用潜力。故选D。

66.Dear John,
Knowing that you’re in need of suggestions on the upcoming English reading class, I can’t wait to share my ideas with you.
From my point of view, a 45-minute class for reading every week is preferred. Only in this way can we have enough time to understand the reading material better and take notes. In terms of content, I recommend a mix of classic literature and interesting novels, which will enrich our literary knowledge and expose us to diverse writing styles. Finally, I expect that this class will not only enhance our interest in reading but also provide us with a chance to explore different cultures.
I’d appreciate it if you take my suggestions into consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua

Hearing this, the shop owner smiled and approached Stephen. He patted the boy’s shoulder and said, “Hey, young guy, think about how much your mom loves you.” Stephen thought of the moment when he was a little kid. In fact, his mother carried him in her arms. She cooked the delicious food for him. She played games with him. He also remembered that when he failed in the exam, she comforted him with all her heart and kept him company over the night. She was there for him whenever he needed her.
Stephen realized his mistake and thanked the shop owner: He rushed home in a hurry. He saw his mother standing at the door with tears in her eyes. Seeing his coming, his mother stepped forward, saying, “You must be hungry! I have cooked the meal you like e and have it now.” He hugged his mother tightly, streaming with tears and said. “I am terribly sorry, Mom. I am wrong and I will never quarrel with you again. I love you.”
