The children pulled the boat up from the water and started to look around the island.
“Bring the picnic basket up here, under this tree, ” said Ann. “We must keep it cool.”
Lucy and Lily took the basket from the boat and put it under the tree.
Lucy heard a noise, so she asked, “Does anybody live here ”
“No! We're alone here.” said Jim. “Isn't that great ”
“Don't worry!” said Kate. “We're safe. Don't be afraid. Let's go for a walk.”
The children walked around, talking, and laughed happily.
When they came back for lunch, Bruce cried, “Oh dear! The picnic basket is missing!”

The children looked under the tree where the basket was and
searched the area around it. They were thirsty and hungry, but
the basket seemed to have disappeared without a trace.
“Are those footprints ” Lucy said, pointing at the ground. There was a set of little footprints leading away from the tree to some thick bushes nearby.
“There must be other children somewhere on the island! It was really not nice of them to steal our food!” said Jim
“It might be a strong wind that blew the basket away!” said Lily.
“Maybe it’s a hungry bear that took our food! And it’s going to eat us too!” said Bruce, shaking with fear.
“I didn’t see or hear any other people on the island. Also, the basket is too heavy for the wind to blow it away,” Lucy said. “And the footprints don’t look like bear paw prints.”
The children carefully followed the footprints to the bushes. There, hiding between the branches of the bushes, was a monkey. Next to it, the basket lay on its side. The monkey and two much smaller monkeys were feasting on the children's picnic of fruits, sandwiches, and pizza.
When the monkeys saw the children, they ran away quickly, leaving behind a mess of half-eaten food.
“Oh well,” said Kate. “At least the mummy monkey and her two babies had a good meal.”
“I have some cookies in my backpack. We can each have one, and we can get some proper food after we row back to the mainland, ” said Bruce. The other children agreed. What a story they would have to share with their family later!
