While elephants born without tusks (长牙) are not unheard of, they normally form just 2 to 6 percent of the population. However, that is not the case at Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, where an astonishing 33 percent of female elephants born after the country's civil war ended in 1992 are tuskless. While that may appear to be just a coincidence, le, an elephant behavior expert, has another theory. The researcher thinks we may be witnessing unnatural evolution of the species due to the constant hunting of elephants for valuable ivory.
Poole says before the country's 15 year long civil war, the 100,000-acre park was home to over 4,000 elephants. However, by the time the conflict ended in 1992, about 90 percent of them had been killed for ivory to help finance weapons (武器) and meat to feed the soldiers. Of the less than 200 survivors, over 50 percent of adult females had no tusks. Therefore, it is not surprising that the park's tuskless elephant population has grown greatly.
This is not the first time researchers have observed a great change in the population of elephants. At Zambia's South Luangwa National Park and Lupande Game Management Area, areas which were heavily hunted in the 1970s and 1980s, 35% of elephants 25 years or older and 13% of those younger than 25 are now without tusks. A 2008 study published found that the number of tuskless females at the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania went from 10.5 percent in 1969 to almost 40 percent in 1989, largely due to illegal hunting for ivory.
The recent ban on ivory in both the US and China should help get rid of, or at least reduce elephant hunting. However, scientists are not sure how long it will take for elephants with a higher rate of tuskless females, to change the__trend.
24.What is the probable cause of the unnatural evolution of the elephants mentioned in Paragraph 1?( )
A.Illegal hunting.
B.Constant farming.
C.A pure coincidence.
D.Natural evolution.
25.Why did people kill so many elephants during the civil war in Mozambique?( )
A.To get funds by selling ivory.
B.To develop new weapons.
C.To provide food for local people.
D.To make ivory products.
26.Which of the following had the earliest record on tuskless elephants?( )
A.Gorongonsa National Park.
B.South Luangwa National Park.
C.The Ruaha National Park.
D.Lupande Game Management Area.
27.What does the underlined phrase “the trend” in the last paragraph refer to?( )
A.Elephants facing greater danger.
B.Elephants growing more slowly.
C.Fewer female elephants staying alive.
D.More female elephants being tuskless.
C
I'm an ecologist studying the cultural value and sustainability of wildlife use by traders and traditional healers in South Africa. I am also a traditional healer myself and work with conservationists to protect wildlife.
In southern Africa, traditional healers use plant and animal materials, known as umuthi (means medicine), that might come from endangered species such as lions and pangolins (穿山甲). This can create tension between umuthi traders and conservation professionals. I think a lot about the balance to be struck between cultural identity, healing traditions and the urgent need for wildlife preservation. I meet with traditional healers and umuthi traders in markets in Johannesburg. Behind me, dried umuthi lines the walls in glass jars and my hands are arranged to form one of the greetings of a traditional healer.
Being a healer as well as a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town brings me unique insights. Often, conservation objectives clash with deeply rooted cultural practices. I try to bridge those two fields and build trust between healers, tribal authorities, traders and conservationists—a challenging endeavour (努力) in the light of historical research practices.
Practices that bring these groups together, such as ones that promote home grown medicinal plants, have had promising outcomes. I talk to communities about our conservation laws and how they could be changed to allow sustainable harvesting of natural products. I want to make communities become administrators of their environment. After all, if plants and animals go extinct, then that threatens the lives of traders and healers alike.
My double role as a healer and researcher creates its own complexities (复杂性). Yet, I remain optimistic that harmonious coexistence is achievable. My purpose is to enlarge the voices of traditional healers, respect their wisdom, and preserve the balance between culture and conservation for generations to come.
28.What can we know about umuthi?( )
A.It must be very expensive.
B.It can cure many kinds of diseases.
C.It's made from several materials.
D.It's been accepted by conservation professionals.
29.What does the underlined word “clash” in Paragraph 3 mean?( )
A.Conflict. B.Combine.
C.Compete. D.Challenge.
30.How does the author help different parties solve problems?( )
A.By combining different groups together.
B.By suggesting growing medical plants.
C.By advising government to make laws.
D.By making healers help traders.
31.What does the author think of his work as a double role?( )
A.Easy. B.Convenient.
C.Encouraging. D.Worthwhile.

This little South American penguin swims 5,000 miles to a beach in Brazil every year in order to be reunited with the man who saved its life. It sounds like something out of a fairy tale, but it's true!
71 year old retired fisherman Joao, who lives in an island village just outside Riode Janeiro, Brazil, found the small penguin lying on rocks at his local beach in 2011. The penguin was covered in oil and running out of time fast. Joao saved the penguin, naming it Dindim, cleaned the oil off its feathers and fed him a daily diet of fish to rebuild its strength. After a week of recovery, Joao tried to release the penguin back into the wild. “He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,” Joao recalled.
The little guy wasn't gone long though and just a few months later, he was back at the same beach. He saw Joao fishing and followed him home, staying with him for the rest of that year. Amazingly, each year Dindim spends about eight months with Joao and is believed to spend the rest of the time breeding (繁殖) on the Patagonia coasts. It's thought that Dindim swims up to 5,000 miles to return to Joao. “I love the penguin like it's my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,” Joao told Globo TV. “No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks (啄) them if they do. He lies on my lap, lets me give him showers, and allows me to feed him.”
Professor Krajewski, a biologist who interviewed the fisherman, told The Independent, “I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well.” When he sees him, he wags his tail like a dog. It's lucky for Joao and Dindim, because it is illegal in Brazil to keep wild animals as pets.
Krajewski said, “Professionals who work with animals try to avoid relationships like this so they can send the animals back into the wild. But in this single case the authorities (当局) allowed Dindim to stay with Joao because of his kindness.”
32.Every year Dindim swims a long distance to a beach in Brazil to ________.( )
A.avoid being killed
B.meet his rescuer
C.find a place to have babies
D.find much more fish
33.When Dindim was found in 2011, ________.( )
A.he was dying
B.he was running on the beach
C.he was resting on a rock
D.he was cleaning oil off his feathers
34.What makes Professor Krajewski surprised?( )
A.Dindim's love toward Joao.
B.Joao keeps staying with Dindim.
C.Dindim's swimming performance.
D.Joao considers Dindim his own child.
35.What can we learn about Joao from the passage?( )
A.He is not allowed to keep the penguin as a pet by the authorities.
B.He overprotects the penguin by keeping him away from others.
C.His contact with the penguin is encouraged by professionals.
D.His kindness wins the penguin's trust.

Working Together to Save the Sea Turtles
Florida has some of the best beaches in the world. Thousands of people visit the state to enjoy the sand. But these beaches are also home to five species of sea turtles. A major problem is facing these interesting creatures. 36(____) So how do Floridians protect these special animals
Some volunteers and researchers in Florida take direct action to help the turtles. They look closely at the sand to find the fin (鳍) marks the mother sea turtles left there. 37(____) When they've figured out where the eggs were laid, they mark the area off so that no one disturbs the eggs. They also collect information about the nests and tracks to help people studying sea turtles.
These are not the only Floridians taking action to help protect these creatures. Florida's government has passed laws to save the turtles. One of these laws is “Florida's Marine Turtle Protection Act”. This law prohibits anyone from disturbing or destroying marine turtles, nests, or eggs. 38(____)
Another way Floridians work together to save these creatures is through organizations like the Sea Turtle Conservancy. The Sea Turtle Conservancy helps people take steps that will help reduce the threats that put sea turtles in danger. For instance, bright lights on buildings near the beach can negatively impact sea turtles. Baby sea turtles usually hatch on the sandy beach and head to the ocean. When there are bright lights coming from the other side of the shore far from the ocean, the baby turtles get confused. 39(____) To help save these turtles, The Sea Turtle Conservancy works with property owners to make lighting in their buildings sea turtle friendly. They also encourage Florida residents to turn off their lights at night if they live close to a beach.
40(____) Sometimes, turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. They eat this trash and die. Florida residents can volunteer for beach clean ups and make sure to pick up their own litter. They can also vote for state leaders who want to protect the sea turtles' habitats. Every individual in the community has the power to make a difference!
A.Many of them do not make it to the ocean and die.
B.Some of these turtle species are in danger of going extinct.
C.This helps them to locate where the sea turtles laid their eggs.
D.It also helps make sure that sea turtles' natural habitats are protected.
E.Female sea turtles come from the ocean and onto these beaches at night.
F.They use their fins to move back across the beach and return to the ocean.
G.Every Floridian can do their part to protect sea turtles and their environment.

A man on a rafting (竹筏漂流) trip in Saskatchewan saved a coyote pup (郊狼幼仔) from drowning (淹死) and nursed it back to health during his 10 day outdoor trip.
“Justin was in a multi day rafting trip down the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan rivers when he heard some noise,” the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Saskatchewan wrote in an Instagram post. He said it sounded like a dog fight so he parked his raft to find out what was going on. However, he wasn't able to see anything so he went back to his raft to go fishing.
While he was fishing, he heard something in the water crying out—and that was when he saw some kind of animal swimming in the river! Its nose was hardly above the water and the water was so dark that Justin couldn't tell what kind of animal it was at first. Justin tried to reach for the animal but ended up falling in the freezing cold water as well. Luckily, Justin was somehow able to locate the animal—a coyote pup—in the water and catch his raft before it was taken away by water for good!
When Justin brought the animal back to his raft, the little coyote pup didn't seem to be breathing, with its eyes closed. The pup was lucky yet again as Justin had first aid knowledge and was able to do a Heimlich treatment by pushing on its stomach. After a few pushes, water came out of the coyote's nose and he was breathing again! Justin and his new friend were both wet through so they made an effort to reach land again where Justin made a fire and tried to warm the little guy up.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Justin shortened the trip over the next 10 or so days in order to take care of the pup well. Finally, Justin was able to find a place where he could get service and call experts for advice.

I've been to Paris, Rome and Egypt, but it was always because my work took me there. For my last trip, I went to Sudan to look for snakes. W:But you must take a holiday sometimes. M:Well once or twice I have traveled to some places not connected with snakes. For example, I spent a holiday in Hawaii with some friends. They enjoyed the beach and the markets while I went swimming underwater with my underwater camera. W:Is your camera the most important thing when you travel M:Yes, my camera and my sleeping bag. I can sleep anywhere I want. W:So, do you ever stay in hotels M:If I go with friends, I might stay at a hotel or a guesthouse. But normally, I'm on my own, so I rarely book a hotel in advance. I can fall asleep in a sleeping bag anytime and anywhere.

Text 10
Could you survive for a few days without your smartphone or without being connected to the Internet How about living in a cave with no modern equipment for 40 days Fifteen people did just that. They took part in a project called Deep Time to see how they would react to and deal with being totally disconnected from the modern world. Scientists wanted to understand how people would adapt to great changes in living conditions. There was no sunlight and the volunteers had no contact with the outside world. They had to rely on their body clock to know when to wake up, go to sleep and eat. Most of the volunteers said they enjoyed the experience of being cut off from the outside world. Two thirds wanted to remain underground a while longer in order to finish projects they had started. Deep Time's director Christian Clot said the experience would test humans' ability to adapt to strange environment. He said, “We must learn to better understand how our brains are able to find new solutions, whatever the situation.” One clear observation is that volunteers lost their sense of time. Mr Clot said, “In our heads, we had walked into the cave 30 days ago.”

Protect Monarch Butterflies
Nowadays, monarch butterflies are in serious trouble. Its population has crashed rapidly in the last few years.
The reason for this is that their natural environment is being destroyed. People cut down trees and use chemicals to kill the plants. It is time to raise the awareness of protecting monarch butterflies and take effective measures. People are supposed to stop cutting down trees and ensure enough plants for monarch butterflies to feed on. Besides, farmers should be taught to use chemicals properly.
It's our duty to rescue endangered animals. Only by living in harmony with animals can we have a better planet to live on.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Justin shortened the trip over the next 10 or so days in order to take care of the pup well. Finally, Justin was able to find a place where he could get service and call experts for advice.

[精彩范文]
Justin shortened the trip over the next 10 or so days in order to take care of the pup well. He kept the coyote with him and cared for him the whole time! The little pup would eat with Justin, stay in his jacket, and sleep in his backpack while they were rafting down the river. Justin ended up naming the little guy YipYip and took really good care of him during the trip.
Finally, Justin was able to find a place where he could get service and call experts for advice. At first, he emailed the local zoo. A staff there helped him connect with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. One of the medical care workers, Melanie got in touch with Justin and took YipYip back to the center for further treatment. One month later Justin went to the center to see YipYip. The little coyote ran to him the moment he saw Justin. He was so happy to meet Justin and maybe he did know how lucky he was! If it hadn't been for the caring Justin, little YipYip would have drowned in the river.

18.How long did the volunteers live in the cave?( )
A.For 40 days. B.For 15 days.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Justin shortened the trip over the next 10 or so days in order to take care of the pup well. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍
