Tom Sawyer Play Is an Adventure
A 35 minute hand clapping, foot stomping musical version of a Mark Twain favorite returns with this Tall Stacks festival.
“Tom Sawyer: A River Adventure” has all the good stuff, including the fence painting, the graveyard, the island and the cave. It is adapted by Joe McDonough, with music by David Kisor. That's the local stage writing team that creates many of the Children's Theatre of Cincinnati's original musicals, along with the holiday family musicals at Ensemble Theatre.
This year Nathan Turner of Burlington is Tom Sawyer, and Robbie McMath of Fort Mitchell is Huck Finn.
Turner, a 10th grader at School for Creative and Performing Arts, is a familiar presence on Cincinnati's stages. He is a star actor of Children's Theatre, having played leading roles in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “The Wizard of Oz”, and is fresh from Jersey Production “Ragtime”.
McMath is a junior at Beechwood High School. He was in the cast of “Tom Sawyer” when it was first performed and is a Children's Theatre regular, with five shows to his credit. This summer he attended Kentucky's Governor's School for the Arts in Musical Theatre.
Note to teachers: Children's Theatre has a study guide demonstrating how math and science can be taught through “Tom Sawyer”. For downloadable lessons, visit the official website of Children's Theatre.

Fifty years ago, the well loved musician Bob Dylan played at the Newport Folk Festival and was widely booed (嘘声). The audience may have been unhappy but Dylan's performance helped change the direction of music and culture in the United States.
The mid 1960s were a time of great change. One such place of change was the world of folk music. Bob Dylan became a symbol of change when he moved from acoustic (原声的) to electric guitar.
Rock music historian Elijah Wald has written a new book about the change. It is called “Dylan Goes Electric”.
“There was a moment in the early 1960s when you could look at the Billboard charts and seven of the top 10 albums were folk records. And Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, all had huge, huge, huge number one records.”
And then this happened: The “British Invasion” introduced the world to the Beatles and grew a huge fan base for rock music. “That worried many folk musicians,” says Elijah Wald.
They hoped that Bob Dylan would come to the rescue. However, a new Dylan sound came from the stage.
Bob Dylan had gone electric, and the followers of folk music were not pleased.
“When Dylan went electric, I think one of the issues was the feeling that—wait a minute, he's gone over to the enemy.”
Folk lovers had looked to Bob Dylan to save their movement from rock and roll. But, author Wald says Dylan felt differently about the music.
“Dylan had always liked rock and roll and Dylan didn't think of rock and roll as stupid music.” In fact, Dylan was a Beatles fan. He later said that from the first time he heard the Beatles he knew “they were pointing to the direction where music had to go.”
Beyond the music, Dylan's performance that night also marked a turn in American culture.
24.How did the audience feel when Dylan played at the Newport Folk Festival?( )
A.Unsatisfied. B.Respectful.
C.Uncaring. D.Excited.
25.Which one is mentioned in this passage about American music world in the early 1960s according to Elijah Wald?( )
A.Great changes had taken place in folk music.
B.People had grown sincere love for rock music.
C.Folk music was once a huge mainstream pop trend.
D.Bob Dylan was the best American musician at that time.
26.What did folk musicians and followers expect Dylan to do?( )
A.Introduce the world to the Beatles.
B.Change folk music for better.
C.Play rock and roll against the Beatles.
D.Recover the glory of folk music.
27.What will the author most probably talk about next?( )
A.Dylan's beliefs in the new direction music should go.
B.Dylan's deep love for the Beatles, rock and roll music.
C.Dylan's music as a great contribution to American folk music.
D.Dylan's performance as a mark of a change in American culture.

Sara Kays, a 22 year old girl, is a rising star on online video sharing platforms. She not only uses TikTok to promote her music but also posts songs to get feedback (反馈) from her followers.
“It's been cool to engage with people that way,” said Kays, who has been using online platforms to realize her music dream. Now, she is famous on TikTok with about 1.3 million followers. She released her breakup song Remember That Night in November 2020. The post blew__up,__getting almost three million views in a matter of days.
Kays has loved singing since she was young. At 11, she got a guitar from her mother and then started to sing while playing. Gradually, people started asking her to play at restaurants and she also started to post some live videos on YouTube, gaining her more and more followers. At 17, Kays turned to songwriting to help her deal with the confusion in life and serve as an outlet for her thoughts and feelings.
“I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to release songs and that all these people are listening to them online,” said Kays. “It's been amazing.”
Different from other content creators who update their content frequently, Kays updates on a weekly basis and only posts videos about her songs and related stories, such as singing, playing the guitar or ukulele, shooting music videos. Her videos are always simple, and the recording process is pretty simple too: she edits the vocals and video in her room.
Now, Kays has signed with a music company. In Kays' eyes, people like her songs and videos because she writes about life experiences and emotions of the youth. “I just sing and share my feelings about divorced parents, body image, loneliness and mental health,” said Kays. “I want more people to know they're not alone with the struggles in their lives.”
28.For what purpose does Kays use TikTok?( )

When everything is going wrong, there's nothing like listening to a few bars of your favorite sad song. But why do we find pleasure in sad music This puzzled two researchers at the Freie Universit t Berlin in Germany who set out to explore our strong feeling for sad songs in a world where entire industries exist to help us remove sadness from our lives.
Their study—based on a survey of more than 770 people around the world and published this month in the journal PLOS ONE—discovered sad music can create positive emotions, like peacefulness and kindness, and that choosing the tearful ballad on your music player offers three benefits.
The biggest turned out to be that sad songs allow you to feel sadness without any of its “real life contexts”. In other words, you can safely explore what it's like to be a little blue without experiencing the great pain of losing a loved one, for example.
“Emotion control” was another important benefit. Many of those surveyed said that when they were in a bad mood (情绪), experiencing sadness through music made them feel better afterwards and provided an emotional improvement. That may be because the songs help them to express and let go of their emotions, researchers noted. “Sad music promotes and creates a space for reflection and reexamination of personal experiences, thoughts and feelings,” one of the researchers added.
The benefit of “empathy” (共鸣) made the listener feel good by allowing him to share the sadness of another human being through the song. When we're having social problems, like when we're feeling lonely, homesick or missing someone, the sad songs can offer comfort by showing someone else shares our state of mind, the study found.
So it turns out that Elton John was right: Sad songs do say so much.
32.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 1 refer to?( )
A.When things go wrong.
B.What to explore in sad songs.
C.Why sad music brings us joy.
D.How to remove sadness from life.
33.Which of the following best describes the findings of the study?( )
A.Benefits of sad music.
B.Strong feelings in sad music.
C.Real life contexts of sad music.
D.Empathetic comforts from sad music.
34.How does sad music achieve “emotion control”?( )
A.By freeing us from bad moods.
B.By bringing great pain to us.
C.By helping us reflect on exams.
D.By providing a space for us.
35.Why is Elton John mentioned at the end of the passage?( )
A.To prove Elton John was right.
B.To show Elton John wrote songs.
C.To make the readers think deeply.
D.To stress the point of the passage.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mrs Palin spoke as she walked to the front of the classroom, “Next Wednesday, I'll give you a test to check your ability as a conductor. Now, select one of the composers listed on the chalkboard. And after class, find a tape containing the composition created by the composer. During the test, use the tape player to play the composition. When the music starts, imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra that performs the composer's music.” And then she smiled, “You'll receive the test in front of your classmates.”
“What A test in front of the classmates It will kill me,” I said to myself. Although normally I performed well in music, and often have high marks, I am quite a shy girl. After a short while, I took a deep breath and scanned the list of names on the chalkboard. One name caught my attention.
“Who's that person?” I wondered. I didn't know, but that was going to be my choice.
Seated in the classroom, I fixed my eyes on that name anxiously, hoping no one would announce that name. Finally, it was my turn. I said without a second thought, “Johannes Brahms.” Once I said the name, panic washed over me. I sighed, “How am I going to do this I know nothing about the person and his composition. But I have to perform in front of my classmates and teacher.”
Later in the day, I went to a store and bought a tape that contained Johannes Brahms's compositions and its relevant music notation (乐谱). Back home, I played the tape, and tried to get familiar with the composition. When listening to the composition and looking at the music score, I held a stick and moved my arms to and fro (来回地), pretending to be guiding an orchestra. During the following days, I kept practicing but didn't perform quite well.
The composition was indeed hard to me.
When the big day came, I felt nervous as I slipped into my seat and waited for my turn to perform. Eventually, Mrs Palin called my name, “Jill, it's your turn.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Then, I forced myself to walk to the front of the classroom. The next day, Mrs Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score.

As we all know, music plays an important part in our daily life. It gives wings to the mind, flight to the imagination as well as charm and joy to life. Besides, music is a universal language. We've all heard the saying, “Where words fail music speaks.” Without music, the world will become silent and pale.
As a matter of fact, I benefit a lot from music. When I feel upset and down, rock music cheers me up and gives me courage. When I am under stress, light music makes me relaxed and comfortable, helping me face the challenges with a peaceful mind.
In a word, music is very powerful. I hope everyone can find his or her favorite music and benefit from listening to music.
第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Then, I forced myself to walk to the front of the classroom. The next day, Mrs Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score.

Then, I forced myself to walk to the front of the classroom. Standing in front of all the students made me very nervous, and my legs kept shaking. To make the matter worse, my brain went blank at that very moment, forgetting my previous practice. However, I tried to remind myself to be calm. After a few deep breaths, I felt much better and began to perform. Thinking my conduct must be terrible, I was even unwilling to think about the result.
The next day, Mrs Palin handed each student a piece of paper with a score. With my report card in hand, my heart pounded because I was afraid that I would be the one who got the lowest score. I closed my eyes and slowly opened my report card. To my surprise, I got a high score. When the teacher announced that I was the best in my class, I almost jumped with joy. I understood that only by working hard can we get good results.

第二节(满分25分)

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
