FROM PROBLEMS TO SOLUTIONS
Economic development is necessary if1 we want to improve society. There comes a time2 when3 the old must give way to the new, and4 it5 is not possible to preserve everything from our past as6 we move towards the future. Finding and keeping the right balance7 between progress and the protection of cultural sites8 can be a big challenge. Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam9 across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and10 supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that11 were an important part of Egypt's cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who12 lived near the dam, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959.
A committee was established to limit13 damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments14 and raised funds within the international community. Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and15 then made a proposal for how16 the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960. The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down17 piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where18 they were safe from the water. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and19 countless cultural relics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project.
When20 the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not only21 had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that22 it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow. The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. Perhaps the best example is shown by UNESCO, which23 runs a programme that24 prevents world cultural heritage sites around the world from disappearing25. If26 a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution.

(2024·江苏省南京市金陵河西中学高一上月考)On Sept. 7, famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO for her contribution to the protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
Called the “daughter of Dunhuang”, her story with the caves started 60 years ago. In 1963, Fan, then a 25 year old Peking University graduate, had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves, a place she had wanted to explore for a long time.
“Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was breathtaking. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine (神圣的) beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth,” Fan told Gansu Daily.
Back in those days, the Mogao Caves were almost completely cut off from the world. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the caves to do research, copy murals (壁画), and do whatever they could to protect and restore them.
In 2011, after 40 years of hard work, a report on 10 Mogao Caves compiled (编写的) by Fan's team was finally published. It was known as China's first professional report on cave archaeology, reported Gansu Daily.
As time passed, Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves, causing the murals inside to fade. A solution needed to be found to preserve Dunhuang's heritage.
In the late 1980s, Fan stumbled upon computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years of exploration, the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database to protect cultural relics there, allowing Dunhuang's art to live forever and to step out of the caves to meet the world.
“In my whole life, I've only done one thing: protect and promote the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves,” she told People's Daily. “My heart belongs to Dunhuang.”

(2024·广东清远五校高一上联考)Many of China's ancient buildings were in danger of being destroyed before Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng started to document them in the 1930s. The husband and wife team were among the first people to work on preserving these buildings in China, and they are also the most well known. Their efforts have inspired generations of people to speak out for architecture that is threatened by rapid development.
Becoming China's best architectural historians was not an easy task. The buildings they wanted to save were centuries old and often located in distant parts of the country. In many cases, they had to travel through dangerous areas in the Chinese countryside to reach them. During the 1930s, exploring remote areas in China meant traveling on muddy, poorly maintained roads by mule or on foot. Inns were often dirty, food could be polluted, and there was always a risk of violence from rebels, soldiers, and robbers.
Their greatest discovery was the Temple of Buddha's Light in Wutai County, Shanxi Province. The breathtaking wooden temple was rebuilt in 857 AD, making it the oldest building known in China at the time.
Liang and Lin crawled into the temple's most forbidding, forgotten areas to determine its age. One area they explored was inhabited by thousands of bats and millions of bedbugs, covered in dust and littered with dead bats. “In complete darkness and among awful smell, hardly breathing, with thick masks covering our noses and mouths, we measured, drew, and took pictures with flashlights for several hours. When we finally came out to take a breath of fresh air, we found hundreds of bedbugs in our bag. We ourselves had been badly bitten. However, the importance and unexpectedness of our find made those hours the happiest of my years hunting for ancient architecture,” Liang wrote about this experience in a book called Liang and Lin: Partners in Exploring China's Architectural Past.

(2024·江苏省泰州市姜堰区江淮职业高级中学高一上月考)In some parts of China, mainly in Anhui Province and Zhejiang Province, spread groups of grey tiled and white walled houses, forming one of the most typical scenes captured in traditional Chinese landscape paintings. It is Hui style architecture, one of the major Chinese architectural styles of ancient times.
Hui style architecture developed into a significant building school in the Song Dynasty. In the mid Ming Dynasty, gardens and houses constructed with Hui styles developed very quickly along with the success of Hui commerce. Hui style architecture soon stepped out from Huizhou and was introduced to big towns.
Hui style architecture is characterized by the arrangement of villages together with nature, and a simple and beautiful exterior (外观).
Hui style houses are usually ones with skylights (天井). With a square skylight surrounded by houses from four sides or from left, right and backside, these houses can reduce the beat of sunshine and enjoy ventilation (通风). All the houses gathers water from the skylight which means fortune will not run off outside.
In ancient times, the colors used for buildings were very strict. Bright colors could only be used in palaces, temples and for government officials. So people in Huizhou chose the black and white colors to paint their houses.
Generally speaking, the exterior appearance of Hui style buildings differs little while their interior can vary a lot based on the wishes of the owners. Home decoration is characterized by three types of Hui carving: stone carving, wood carving and brick carving.
To take a look at the Hui style architecture, Xidi Village in Yixian County, Anhui Province, is the best place to go. It is a site of typical Hui houses, and one of the “Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui” that have been collectively listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

(2024·海南省三亚市第一中学高一上期中)Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.
As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.
One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently.
“I am no longer a kid; I won't play around trees anymore,” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.”
“Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money.” The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.
The tree was upset.
One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. “Come and play with me,” the tree said.
“I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, I don't have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.
The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn't appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree requested.
“I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” “Use my trunk to build the boat and you can sail and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

Many years later, the boy finally returned. Tired, he returned to the apple tree. Seeing him, the tree said, “I'm sorry, boy, but now I have nothing for you.” “I don't intend to get anything from you. With time going by, I come to realize nothing is better than a comfortable place to rest.” said the boy. Hearing this, the tree smiled with relief, adding, “My dying trunk is suitable for you. Please come here and rest.” The boy did as told and the tree smiled heartily.
The apple tree is our mother. When we are young, she tries to attend to and play with us. After growing up, we leave her for some reasons and only come back when in trouble. But she is always out there, devoting whatever she owns without complaint. It is our happiness, rather than rewards, that she desires for. Therefore, try to put ourselves in her situation and show concern for her.

(2024·浙江省绍兴市高一上期末)In September, when UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay visited Zhoukoudian in suburban Beijing, which is famous for the discovery of Peking Man living between 700,000 to 200,000 years ago, she was full of praise for the structure that successfully protected Yuanrendong Cave from an unusual rainstorm in July.
The cave in the central area of the site has so far revealed the remains of 40 individuals. The structure protects the site from the weather, including heavy wind, snow and hail, and its design fits in with the surrounding environment, Qin Changwei, secretary-general of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, said at the 2nd World Cultural and Natural Heritage Forum in Beijing on Nov. 17 and 18. “It provides a reference for the protection of precious cultural relics, and suggests measures for helping heritage sites respond to the influence of climate change.”
Organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the Auspices of UNESCO (Beijing), and the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation among others, the forum brought together some 50 professionals to discuss the protection and sustainable development of heritage sites. Scholars stressed the influence of climate change on heritage sites, and offered suggestions for how to solve the problem.
“Entering the 21st century, climate change has been the subject of in-depth discussion by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Questions like how to balance between humans and nature, how to respond to natural disasters caused by climate change, and what new challenges this brings to World Heritage Sites, are worth consideration,” says Qin. “Solving the problem requires us to unify, making full use of advanced technology, such as space and digital technologies, and jointly developing risk prevention and response plans,” he adds.

A B 难度 ★ ★★ ★★★
