The poaching, or illegal killing, of rhinos in South Africa is growing worse each year. The government recently reported that a record number of rhinos were poached in 2014, a year which had more rhino killings in South Africa than ever before.
The World Wildlife Fund, or WWF, says about 20,000 rhinos live in South Africa. That is more than 80 percent of the rhinos in the world. Edna Molewa, South Africa's environmental issues minister, says, “During 2014, we are sad to say this: 1,215 rhinos were killed. This is a rise in the number of poached rhinos from 1004 in 2013 and indeed very worrying.” The animals are hunted for their horns. Many people in Asia believe the horn has curing power, which drives poachers, at all costs, mad for more horns. But there is no scientific evidence for this belief. The horn is made of keratin. That is the same thing as human hair, fingernails and toenails. Ms Molewa said 386 suspected poachers were arrested last year, an increase from the year before. But rhino protection workers say poachers often go unpunished after arrest. South Africa's legal system is ineffective. Ms Molewa said more needs to be done and South Africa is taking strong measures to protect rhinos. The efforts include moving some of the animals to secret places in neighboring countries. “Now approximately 100 rhinos have been moved to neighboring states in the SADC region during 2014 and 200 more rhinos will be moved this year,” Molewa said.
Jo Shaw, the rhino program manager at the WWF, said, “We're talking about a loss of a hundred rhinos a month. Or more than three a day. We really need to see effective action not just at a national level but internationally.” She says officials should find the criminal groups responsible for the poaching and punish them.

(2024·山东省青岛市高一上期末)An adult African elephant consumes about 223 liters of water and 3,080 pounds of roots, grass and fruit daily. That's like having 634 cans of soda and 1,200 hamburgers every day. This keeps them moving thousands of miles across Africa each year. Elephants usually migrate between March and May. Females live in groups with their children, and quickly run out of the food supply. They hit the road in search of food. Male elephants live alone, so they don't use resources as quickly as the females. Instead, they migrate during their mating cycle. When the females pack their trunks, so do the males.
During migration, elephants face short water supplies and extremely high temperatures. But people are their number one problem. Poachers (偷猎者) kill 35,000 elephants each year for ivory. Many African farmers build fences (栅栏) to protect crops and cattle, which might block regular migration paths. Traffic roads affect elephant migration, too. During one study of 28 elephants in Central Africa, only one female crossed an unprotected road.
Scientists, wildlife organizations and governments cooperate to find solutions for Africa's elephants. “To unlock the secret of where elephants move and how they move, we place collars (项圈) with a satellite unit inside,” Dr Michael Chase says. GPS collars help map which routes elephants use most so that countries can establish protected elephant passages.
Locals come in as well. James Isiche, East Africa Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare says, “We have got the community on our side by a project; they've agreed to partner with us to conserve elephants.” The local community run wildlife parks to attract tourists. “This project helps us take care of both the wildlife and our cows,” says Sikira, a tribal elder in Maasai, Kenya. Protecting elephant migration routes allows these gentle giants to survive.

(2024·山东省淄博市高一上期末)The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve, located near India western tip, is the proud—and only—home of the Asiatic lion. By the early 1900s, however, their populations had decreased for home loss and hunting, leaving fewer than 50 known individuals alive. Though their numbers have risen over the past several decades, the lions are still considered endangered.
One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions' future is to track them, a hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns (图案) that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.
Banerjee, who worked for Indias National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy (精准). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. “It will be a fantastic tool for long term lion monitoring,” says Banerjee. He adds, “It could help forest officials arrive at a more accurate estimate (评估) of Gir's lion population. In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information—how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead.”
Despite the advantages, Banerjee also adds his worries. He suggests certain rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen. “Where tools like SIMBA really shine,” he says, “is in helping researchers develop monitoring plans that are keys to the protection of at risk animals,” he says, “otherwise, all your efforts will be in vain.”

Should We Create More National
Parks to Save Endangered Animals
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct 1(____) And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
2(____) If this environment is destroyed—for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits—many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money. 3(____) On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment. 4(____) They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. 5(____) As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.
A.To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B.Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D.These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E.Firstly, national parks protect these animals' natural environment.
F.They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.

(2024·安徽省安庆市高一上期末)Two years ago Lucy was saved from a rural area in New South Wales, Australia. Today, she is one of the lucky animals living in rows of trees that have been created to protect koalas and other animals by saving their smaller and smaller habitat, or natural environment.
The trees, planted by the local protection group Bangalow Koalas, are made up of large systems of plants. They are a lifeline for koalas and other animals. All of them are in danger of dying out, or at risk of extinction. The trees provide a safe way across the koala's increasingly broken habitat. This protects koalas from human threats. “Our trees are actually trying to get them away from humans, cars and dogs,”said Linda Sparrow, president of Bangalow Koalas.
The koala is expected to die out in the wild in New South Wales by 2050. Some of the biggest threats include wildfires and habitat loss through land clearing for development.
Bangalow Koalas has planted over 336,000 trees on 119 areas, helping koala protection and improving the local ecosystem. The group, which depends on community volunteers, aims to plant 500,000 trees by 2025. “The neighbor would want to join and then another neighbor would want to join,” Sparrow said. Volunteer Lindy Stacker, who has been planting trees for over five years, still remains devoted to the cause.
A recent report by the Australian Koala Foundation said the animal was worth about $3.2 billion per year to the tourism industry. However, the World Wildlife Fund-Australia reported a drop in koala populations in Australian states. “I can't imagine a world where there's no koalas in the wild,” Sparrow said. “We're going to do our best to make sure that doesn't happen.”

The poaching of rhinos is getting worse in South Africa each year. Many rhinos are killed for their horns which are believed to have curing power. Although more poachers are arrested, they hardly get punished. So the members of WWF are calling on more measures to be taken by government and the whole world to protect rhinos, including the effective legal system, rhinos' living places and even international cooperation.

题号 Ⅰ Ⅱ
A B 难度 ★ ★★ ★

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一个有助于保护濒危亚洲狮的人工智能项目。
篇章导读
Despite the advantages, Banerjee also adds his worries. A.Stopping them from being killed.
B.Keeping track of them.
C.Protecting their living environment.
D.Increasing their population.
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions' future is to track them, a hard work.(要想保住狮子的未来,最大的挑战之一就是追踪它们,这是一项艰巨的工作。)”可知,保护亚洲狮最大的困难是追踪他们。故选B。
答案

Should We Create More National
Parks to Save Endangered Animals
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct 1(____) And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
2(____) If this environment is destroyed—for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits—many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
