THE VIRTUAL CHOIR
Imagine having the opportunity to sing together with hundreds of other people1 while2 you are at home alone. You can do this in a virtual choir. Virtual choir members record themselves while3 they perform alone on video. These videos are uploaded onto the Internet, and4 then they are put together into one video that5 you can see online—a virtual choir. Anyone can take part in a virtual choir from anywhere—all you need is a video camera and an Internet connection. You do not even need a studio. A virtual choir helps connect ordinary people together. Many people do not have close friends or contacts who6 have the same interest in music. Many others do not have the chance to join a local choir7. A virtual choir enables them to add their voices8 to those of other individuals and become part of the global community. It has proved to be a positive influence on the lives of many people. As9 one virtual choir member said, “Music helps me to ... forget my problems. With music, I become someone else.”
The virtual choir was the idea of award-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre. Born in the USA on 2 January 197010, Whitacre began studying music at the University of Nevada in 1988. He fell in love with Mozart's classical music when11 he sang for the university choir. Moved by this music12, he said, “It was like seeing color for the first time.” He graduated from university in 1995, and13 then received a master's degree in musical composition from the Juilliard School in New York in 1997. Over the next 10 years, Whitacre's original compositions began to become quite popular among choirs and singers. This led to the creation of the virtual choir.
In 2009, Whitacre received a video of a girl who14 was singing one of his works. Inspired15, he asked his fans to make videos, which16 he then joined together into one performance. His first virtual choir, “Lux Aurumque”, had 185 singers from 12 different countries. It has received millions of views on the Internet. Since then, the virtual choir has become a worldwide phenomenon. Whitacre's next effort was the Virtual Youth Choir for UNICEF, which17 was first seen on stage on 23 July 2014 in the UK. Altogether, 2,292 young people from 80 countries joined in to sing18 Whitacre's song “What If”. 14引导定语从句,修饰限定先行词girl 15过去分词作原因状语 16引导非限制性定语从句,对先行词videos进行解释说明 17引导非限制性定语从句,对先行词the Virtual Youth Choir for UNICEF进行解释说明 18动词不定式短语作目的状语
The virtual choir is a wonderful way for people around the world to sing with one voice and thus make the world a better place19. 19

(2024·重庆市万州第二高级中学高一下质量检测)It was a warm evening in August in 1995. Robert Blocker was driving to Yale University after being appointed as the university's Dean (院长) of Music. He didn't expect to see many people, but a couple of students met him and showed him around.
“When I looked at the history of the university and how people are devoted to the school's art programs, I was honored by the chance to work there. I could not wait for the next day to start my job. And that excitement never changed because every day was different. My job as dean was not scheduled. I walked around the campus and students talked to me. I went to rehearsals (排演) by the students and teachers and got inspired by them,” he says.
After nearly three decades as the Dean of Music at Yale, the 77 year old retired from the position on Aug. 31. Also an expert pianist, he remains a professor of piano at the music school, as well as professor of leadership strategies at Yale School of Management. Among his countless contributions as dean, Blocker developed long term relationships with fellow musicians in China. He once toured cities, including Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hangzhou, giving lectures to the youngsters.
“China is a very special place for me. I am very happy to be back to meet my friends and colleagues,” Blocker says, adding that he is particularly excited about being with young students.
Yang Suxian, director of the Shenzhen Piano Music Festival, says, “He has been very supportive and has participated in the Shenzhen Piano Music Festival for years.”
Blocker's vision of a more hopeful world is reflected in his belief that music bridges the understanding between people.
“Music brings hope. People may speak different languages and have different ideas but music speaks to each other's heart, and that's why we keep this work going on and why the work never ends,” he says, “Our job is to let music heal the world by allowing us to understand and find a common place in our hearts.”

(2024·山西省大同市高一下月考)Highly emotional music causes networks in the brain to release dopamine. This brain chemical plays a role in feelings of pleasure. It also turns on the brain's motor network that makes us want to move. That physical response to a strong beat can be used to help people with brain related disorders, research has shown. It aids their ability to time their body's movements, which can help them with speech issues or trouble moving around.
Olivia Brancatisano, a researcher at Bond University in Robina, Australia, studies music and aging. She found that music can offer a number of benefits, from movement and emotion to communication and thinking. That led her to find music based therapies that might aid people who struggle in these areas.
Older people who have dementia may struggle to remember things. But they did better on mental tasks while listening to music they knew and enjoyed. The selected music had to be highly emotional and personal, Brancatisano notes. Listening brought back memories and improved their attention. Since then, she has developed the Music Mind and Movement program for people with dementia.
Music helps young people, too. International students in Australia took part in a recent study at the University of Queensland in St. Lucia. Students may often feel lonely while far from home. Those in the Tuned In program, however, learned to better manage their anxiety using music. They also got better at identifying their emotions. That helped them take action when they were struggling.
The benefits of music seem to cover people of all ages. “We use it to meet basic human needs and to improve our emotional states,” says Brancatisano. “Now, more than ever, we have the ability to engage in music in a variety of ways. We can use it as a tool in everyday life to energize and comfort us.”

(2024·河北省保定市高一下月考)Guy Noble, one of Australia's most famous conductors, who conducted the touring concert “East Meets West”, said he'd like to learn more about Chinese music. “I'm impressed by the history and the beauty Chinese music has,” he's said in an interview recently.
“East Meets West” concert tour in Australia was resumed in 2022 after being postponed twice due to some reasons. It was hosted in Canberra on Saturday, bringing audiences some well known Chinese and Western pieces such as Jasmine Flower, Carmen, Romeo and Juliet, and The Yellow River.
While it was called “East Meets West”, music from China and the West with the same themes was brought together. Chinese singer Ya Fen and Australian singer Victoria Lambourn performed a duet (二重唱) Hope Betrayed, which was inspired by the Chinese classic novel A Dream of Red Mansions. Noble said he loved the duet as it showed completely different singing styles: traditional Chinese opera style and Western opera style. “They're not exactly the same, but they came together,” he said.
Having been a professional conductor for more than 20 years, Noble called music an international language. He noted that most music at the concert was about love, which was also an international language. He also spoke highly of some Chinese musicians, such as pianist Lang Lang who he thought has inspired many kids in China to learn music.
Noble admitted his knowledge of Chinese culture was limited. He said that conducting the Canberra concert was “an experience that I've enjoyed”, which made him more interested in discovering the background and history of the music, as well as the stories behind it. Noble is ready to create more things that can involve dance or calligraphy or some of the other aspects of Chinese culture, and put them together with music.

(2024·海南省观澜湖双优实验学校高一下月考)What are the two different things that make humans different from other animals One is language, and the other is music. It is true that some animals can sing. However, the songs of animals are very simple. It is also true that humans, not animals, have developed musical instruments.
Music is clearly different from language. However, people can use music to communicate with others, especially expressing their emotions. When music is combined with speech, it's a very powerful form of communication.
If music is truly different from speech, then we should process music and language in different parts of the brain. The scientific studies have proved that it is true. For example, Vissarion Shebalin, a Russian composer, had a stroke in 1953. It injured the left side of his brain. He couldn't speak or understand speech. However, he still could compose music until his death. On the other hand, sometimes strokes cause people to lose their musical ability, but they can still speak and understand speech.
Why does music have a strong effect on us physically and emotionally That's a hard question to answer. Geoffrey Miller, a researcher at a university, thinks that music and love have a strong connection. Music requires a special talent, practice and physical ability. For example, playing a musical instrument requires fine muscular control. You also need good memory to remember the notes. And playing those notes correctly suggests that your hearing is in excellent condition. Finally, when a man sings to the woman he loves, it may be a way of showing off.
However, Miller's theory still doesn't explain why certain combinations of sounds influence our emotions so deeply. For scientists, this is clearly an area that needs further research.

(2024·广西壮族自治区南宁市高一上期末)“What will we be singing for competition this year?” a student from my high school choir asked eagerly. I was really worried about this moment. “I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we'll skip the competition and just work hard on the concerts this year.”
“NO!” the kids disagreed. “We want to compete! For the First Place! It's a tradition!”
This was true. Medals on the front wall of the music room were won by my former excellent students. But they had graduated, leaving me with only twenty two young students, inexperienced kids who couldn't read music, and could sing only a simple melody (乐章).
“Maybe we could win the Second Place this year,” I suggested. I knew even that would be a near impossible task, thinking our competitors: two famous schools with fifty members each. “No!” the kids screamed. “The First Place!”
I shook my head. “First Place is extremely difficult.”
“We can do it!” they shouted. “We can do it!”
“I'll think about it,” I said, hoping their eagerness would die off in a couple of weeks.
But that didn't happen. Instead, the class became more determined. Every day they asked and begged. As a teacher, I couldn't tell them they weren't good enough. To cool their eagerness, I showed them a difficult piece of music from the competition list, but it simply ended with “It's okay, Mrs Pliszka. We'll make it.”
I struggled to make a decision. If I destroyed their hope, would I destroy their spirit I remembered one of my college professor's saying, “Every child will learn if the teacher is willing to try his or her best as the student.” I wasn't afraid of hard work, and I enjoyed a challenge. But I wasn't a magic worker. And so, I think seriously over this challenge.

Finally, one morning I made the decision. I stormed into class and declared we would sing for the contest and entered Class A. The rest of my sentence was lost in screams of delight and applause. As the weeks progressed, each morning the kids practised singing, worked on reading music, learned musical terms, practiced rhythm and marked changes, prepared concert music, and went over and over the three contest numbers. Their progress was so remarkable even I began believing in their dream. Seven months into the school year, when the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world!
When my group stepped on the stage, I could clearly notice distrust from the audience saying my group was so small. I mouthed, “Smile!” They looked confident. I took a deep breath, and we began. They performed masterfully. Two very long hours later the results were posted. I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief: a First Place award with the highest marks of all.All around kids were screaming and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks. I was surrounded by kids who had a dream—kids who refused to give up—kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any student or any class ever again.

A new app will soon help more than 50,000 Israeli students learn English through popular music.
“There is so much research out there that shows how music can help students learn,” says Michael Peled, founder and CEO of Singit. “Getting kids to interact with words in real life through music is a very useful learning tool, and we are finding that it also works for dyslexic (诵读困难者) and special education students.”
Students can listen on their phones or computers to music from a sea of songs and follow along with the lyrics on the screen. When they see a word that they don't recognize, they can click the word. With the help of AI and Machine Learning technology, Singit offers other songs with the words they didn't know. After hearing the song, students are given a test that tests them for the words they clicked on. Meanwhile, teachers can send students customized grammar tests.
“We work with a company called LyricFind that provides more than five million songs. Most schools won't want to have many types of songs due to educational considerations, but that will still leave more than 100,000 songs they can hear,” Peled says.
“The first version of the app we built in 2017 was bad, but by 2019, we had a new version, and we tested it throughout 2020,” Peled says.
Pilot tests show that the app increased students' interaction with the English language by 62%. “Singit was recently recognized by the Ministry of Education. Many schools, including ten special education schools, have already chosen the app,” Peled adds. “By the end of the year, we will have about 53,000 users around the country.” Peled has big plans for Singit. “We are going to introduce Singit to Asia, Brazil, and other places where they teach English as a second language.”

答案
