At 7 am, in the dark of an autumn morning, parents arrive to drop off their children at the kindergarten in Viimsi, a 15-minute drive from Tallinn, before heading off to work in the city.
The day starts officially at 9 am, but Laanelinnu kindergarten that widely gains a liking of working parents opens two hours earlier and does not close until 7 pm.In doing so, working parents won't worry about being late for work and leaving the office early.
The kindergarten focuses on pre-school education.Classrooms, with vast windows fronting onto forest, fan out around a whitewashed central hall, and outside a large playground surrounds the entire building. Some of the children who attend Laanelinnu are as young as two, but as we enter the building barely a sound can be heard. In each of the classrooms, which are large and well equipped, there are up to 20 children—attentive and focused—supervised by a qualified pre-school teacher and two assistant teachers.
Despite having visitors, the children at Laanelinnu focus on their lessons. In one darkened classroom, they lie on their backs in a quiet corner as their teachers prepare for the day ahead. In another class, there's music and dancing. In another group, children are doing a project about the human body, while next door there's a cookery class going on, with a tasting period followed by bread-making.
The pre-school course takes in everything from letters and language skills to art, music and robotics.“Though it's not called school, it's the first step of their education,” says the kindergarten's project manager.“We do teach kids here.It is no longer simply childcare.” By the time they leave, most children will have learned to read and write, but in a relaxed environment.
The kindergarten system is an integrated part of national education and at the end of their time there, children are given a school readiness card that they take with them to the next stage in their education.

Previous studies have found that the number of years spent in school relates to cognition later in life, but few studies have examined the influence of educational quality.
“Our study establishes a link between high-quality education and better later-life cognition and suggests that increased investment in schools could be a powerful strategy to improve cognitive health among older adults in the United States,” said Jennifer Manly, senior author of the study.
The study, led by Manly and Dominika eblová, a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia, used data from Project Talent, a 1960 survey of high school students across the United States, and follow-up data collected in the Project Talent Aging Study. The researchers examined the relationships between six indicators (指标) of school quality and several measures of cognitive performance in participants nearly 60 years after they left high school.Since high-quality schools may be especially beneficial for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the researchers also examined whether associations differed by geography, gender, race and ethnicity.
The researchers found that attending a school with a higher number of teachers with graduate training was the most consistent predictor of better later-life cognition, especially in language fluency (for example, coming up with words within a category).Attending a school with a high number of graduate-level teachers was about equal to the difference in cognition between a 70-year-old and someone who is one to three years older.Other indicators of school quality were related to some, but not all, measures of cognitive performance.
According to Manly and eblová, there may be many reasons explaining why attending schools with well-trained teachers may affect later-life cognition.“Instruction provided by more experienced and knowledgeable teachers might be more intellectually inspiring and provide additional neural or cognitive benefits,” said eblová, “and attending higher-quality schools may also influence life track, leading to university education and greater earnings, which are in turn linked to better cognition in later life.”
8.How did Manly and eblová conduct the research
A.By conducting surveys.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By explaining examples.
D.By interviewing the elders.
9.What is the result of the study
A.The physical health determines your future life.
B.Good education contributes to good later-life cognition.
C.Language fluency is based on postgraduate training.
D.Good schools should have many well-trained teachers.
10.What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A.To remind the public of seniors' health.
B.To look into investment in schools.
C.To achieve the fairness of humans.
D.To attach importance to education.
11.What is eblová's attitude to high-quality school education
A.Favourable. B.Doubtful.
C.Uncaring. D.Opposing.

A new study suggests that mindfulness education—lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body—can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behaviour problems.
After finding that students who self-reported mindful habits performed better on tests and had higher grades, researchers from the Centre for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits.
They designed a study focusing on sixth-graders in a Boston school. The study showed that sixth-graders who participated in an eight-week mindfulness were less stressed out than their classmates who hadn't.Practising mindfulness had helped improve the ability to focus in the moment, expanding students' capacity to learn and regulate their emotions.
Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts non-profit specialising in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices, like focusing on a rock for a minute, then discussing when their mind wandered and refocused on the rock.Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead. The students were randomly assigned between the groups.
At the end of the eight weeks, the mindfulness group reported being less stressed than they had been before the mindfulness education, and better able to practise self-control.And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus. The group who attended coding classes didn't see the same benefits.
The findings suggest that the mindfulness instruction helped boost students' attention skills, as well as develop coping mechanisms for stress. The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students' ability to succeed.
12.What was the purpose of the study
A.To examine the techniques for practising mindfulness.
B.To study the effects of group mindfulness training on students.
C.To see how students help themselves to perform better on tests.
D.To understand why mindfulness training calms the mind and body.
13.How was the study conducted
A.By listing benefits of mindfulness education.
B.By scanning the brain to see how it controls emotions.
C.By teaching different students different mindfulness skills.
D.By comparing two groups of students attending different classes.
14.What change took place after the students practised mindfulness work
A.They felt easier to stay focused.
B.They were better at computer coding.
C.Their mind was wandering more actively.
D.Their brains were more aware of negativity.
15.Who are the most possible target readers of the passage
A.Stressful parents.
B.Mindful instructors.
C.Emotional students.
D.School educators.

Have you ever wished you didn't have to wake up early and go all the way to school For 700,000 American kids, this wish comes true. 16 This kind of learning has different names: online learning or distance learning.Regardless of what it is called, this idea may create an impression of a lonely kid reading pages of information on a computer screen rather than from a book or an image of another kid spending the day playing video games instead of learning mathematics or reading a book.Where online education is concerned, both of these are false! Actually, online learning simply means learning differently.
17 Flexibility is the main advantage.Students can attend school wherever and whenever they desire.Homework can be turned in from anywhere the student has Internet access.Additionally, many online schools will allow students to work at their own pace.
Another advantage of online schooling is with the variety of courses. Most online schools teach the same basic classes like English, math, science, and history. 18 However, traditional schools are often unable to offer these types of classes if there are not enough students.
Online schools also have different types of learning tools for kids to use.For example, many online schools have special websites where only students registered in online classes can watch videos, see lessons presented, or chat with teachers and other students. Some online schools have live class times where students can call and talk with the teacher directly. 19
Computer technology is amazing, and we use computers for chatting with our friends, listening to music, and playing games. 20 Since 2012, at least 38 states either have had their own online schools or made rules for students attending them.It looks like online schools are here to stay, but only you can decide if this type of learning is right for you.
A.Online schools offer many benefits for the learners.
B.Of course, there are some disadvantages of going to school online.
C.Almost every part of our lives is affected by it, and school is no exception.
D.They attend school over the Internet using ordinary home or library computers.
E.Other online schools even have online clubs where kids can talk about their hobbies.
F.Some online schools also offer specialised classes in subjects such as space science, French, or zoology.
G.For some students, online school may be ideal, but for others, traditional school may better meet their needs.

I used to work in a preschool for one and a half years, teaching the class for 2-year-olds.There was a head teacher and two assistant teachers(including me) in our class.
Maybe 8 months into my work, we had a new student named Jack, who was nearly 3 years old but hardly knew any words. In fact when he arrived, the only words he would say were “hi” and “no”.Based on our working experience, we suspected his parents just never interacted with him at home.
Every morning, Jack's mom would drop him off with a totally blank expression. The moment they arrived, Jack would start crying, holding onto the hand or leg of his mother, who would just struggle to get the boy off her, saying “Let me go, Jack.” and then walk away without a look back. When she picked him up in the afternoon, Jack would run up to show her something but she would simply stare blankly at him and say “Let's go, Jack.” If the teachers reported anything to her, she'd say “I see.” “Mhmm.”, giving us the same absent look.
Jack's dad rarely came and he was just as bad.He obviously had an anger problem.Anytime he heard something negative had happened, he would turn red, stare angrily at his son and just say “HUH.Well.We will deal with it.” in such a cold voice.
As a result, the boy, who longed desperately for attention and love, was always bad-tempered (坏脾气).He would run, kick, hit, and even sometimes bite other kids. And when he did it he would laugh and turn to us to look for a reaction. We criticised and punished him again and again, but it didn't work at all. After his second week, the lead teacher decided to talk to his mom about it.His mom just shrugged (耸肩) it off, gave that blank look and said, “Oh yeah, Jack is a handful (难管的人).I just can't help it.”The teachers were all shocked.

Having handled Jack for two months, we adjusted our approach. Instead of punishing him every time he misbehaved, we tried to give him more positive attention. When he did well we praised him, and when he was sad we hugged him and played games with him.Slowly but surely, Jack started to open up.He would smile more often and even started babbling more words.
To our great joy, Jack gradually changed. He stopped hitting and biting other kids and even started playing nicely with them.Seeing the great changes that had taken place in their child, Jack's parents also deeply reflected on themselves. His parents started taking more of an interest in him and even started attending parent-teacher meetings. At the moment, I realised that every child needs love and attention, and that a little positivity can go a long way in changing a child's life.
根据 “Atlanta International Language Institute (AILI)” 中提及的“Courses include ten continuous weekly classes and the classes meet once a week for two hours.”
根据“Language Institute of Georgia (LIG)”中提及的“Refunds have to be requested within a week of the start date of the class.”
根据文章前三个学校的名字中分别都提到了一个地方“Atlanta(亚特兰大)”以及最后学校“Language Institute of Georgia (LIG)”在介绍的内容中“It is a well-established school in Atlanta that offers English classes using Graded Reader Method.” 故选A。]
根据第二段中的“The day starts officially at 9 am, but Laanelinnu kindergarten that widely gains a liking of working parents opens two hours earlier and does not close until 7 pm.”
分析句子可知,“supervised by a qualified pre-school teacher and two assistant teachers”是后置定语,修饰名词“20 children”,画线词“supervised”的逻辑主语是“20 children”。结合画线词后“a qualified pre-school teacher and two assistant teachers”可推知,“20个孩子”是由幼儿园的“学前教师和两名助理教师”监管,所以画线词supervised与monitor同义,意为“监督,管理”。故选A。]
根据第四段“Despite having visitors, the children at Laanelinnu focus on their lessons. In one darkened classroom, they lie on their backs in a quiet corner as their teachers prepare for the day ahead. In another class, there's music and dancing. In another group, children are doing a project about the human body, while next door there's a cookery class going on, with a tasting period followed by bread-making.”
通读全文,结合第三段中的“The kindergarten focuses on pre-school education.”,倒数第二段中的“The pre-school course takes in everything from letters and language skills to art, music and robotics.”和“We do teach kids here.It is no longer simply childcare.”
根据第三段中的“The researchers examined the relationships between six indicators of school quality and several measures of cognitive performance in participants nearly 60 years after they left high school.Since high-quality schools may be especially beneficial for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the researchers also examined whether associations differed by geography, gender, race and ethnicity.”
根据第四段中的“The researchers found that attending a school with a higher number of teachers with graduate training was the most consistent predictor of better later-life cognition, especially in language fluency (for example, coming up with words within a category).”可知,良好的教育促进晚年的认知,所以B项“Good education contributes to good later-life cognition.”
根据第一段“Previous studies have found that the number of years spent in school relates to cognition later in life, but few studies have examined the influence of educational quality.”
根据最后一段中 eblová所说的话“Instruction provided by more experienced and knowledgeable teachers might be more intellectually inspiring and provide additional neural or cognitive benefits”和“and attending higher-quality schools may also influence life track, leading to university education and greater earnings, which are in turn linked to better cognition in later life”可推断出这位专家对于高质量的教育是持支持态度的。故选A。]
根据第二段中的“researchers from the Centre for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits”可知,该研究探究的是以学校为基础的正念训练对学生是否有类似的好处,即群体正念训练对学生的效果。
根据第四段中的“Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts non-profit specialising in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices”和“Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead.”
根据第五段中的“And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus.” 故选A。]
根据最后一段中“The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students' ability to succeed.”
