They say one’s trash is another’s treasure, but a chunk of “rock” used to keep a door open for decades is a treasure by pretty much any metric you might care to use.
The 3.5 kilogram (7.7 pound) stone was found in a stream bed in southeast Romania by an elderly woman, who brought it home and put it to use. After the woman died in 1991, the relative who inherited her home suspected the doorstop might be more than meets the eye.
So he consulted experts to find that this is not a “rock” but an amber — tree resin from millions of years in the past. Over time, the highly sticky substance fossilizes into a hard, warm-coloured material widely recognized as a gemstone. This doorstop amber is likely between around 38 and 70 million years old, categorised as rumanite, which is famed and prized for its wide range of deep, reddish colour, and this one turned out to be one of the biggest entire chunks of amber up to now in the world. Its value Somewhere in the region of $1 million — around $ 1.1 million.
“Its discovery represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level,” Daniel Costache, said director of the Provincial Museum of Buzau.
Classified as a national treasure of Romania, the nugget has had a home now at the Provincial Museum of Buzau — the county in which the relic was found — since 2022.
The discovery resembles that of a man in Michigan, who kept a large piece of rock as a doorstop, only to find out decades later that he was keeping his doors in place with a meteorite worth $100,000.
A chunk of amber worth over a million dollars isn’t a bad score, either, really. Just imagine how many doorstops you could buy.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards this kind of discovery
A. Doubtful. B. Humourous. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
5. What does the underlined phrase “more than meets the eye” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Looking more attractive than usual. B. Having a hidden or unexpected value or quality.
C. Appearing larger in size than it actually is. D. Being more difficult to understand that expected.
6. Why is this “doorstop rock” considered a treasure
A. Because of its beautiful appearance B. Because of its unusually large size.
C. Because of its gem-level and scientific significance. D. Because of its sentimental value as a doorstop tool.
7. What is the best title of this text
A. The Hidden Treasure in a Doorstop B. The Story of an Elderly Woman’s Discovery
C. Amber: A Precious Gemstone D. Famous Discoveries in Romania

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is about to make history once again.
Designed to give the closest data ever obtained of the Sun and launched in 2018, Parker has been making history ever since, breaking both solar approachability and speed records.
But its 22nd close flyby on Christmas Eve, 2024, skimming 6.1 million kilometers from the surface of the Sun and speeding by at around 192 km per second, will be a true test of human innovation and Parker’s capabilities.
“It’s basically almost landing on a star,” astrophysicist Nour Raouafi says. “This will be a monumental achievement for all humanity which is equivalent to the Moon landing of 1969.”
Now all the spacecraft systems are operational and Parker is where it needs to be for its daredevil div e on December 24 at 06:53 EST. It will be the first of the probe’s final set of close flybys, known as perihelions (近日点), each of which will attain similar proximity and speed over the course of 2025. before Parker completes its mission.
“This is one example of NASA’s bold missions, doing something that no one else has ever done before to answer long-standing questions about our universe,” says astronomer Arik . Posner. “We can’t wait to receive that first status update from the spacecraft and start receiving the science data in the coming weeks.”
“No human-made object has ever passed this close to a star, so Parker will truly be returning data from uncharted territory,” says aerospace engineer Nick Pinkine.
Parker is scheduled to perform up to four more perihelions in 2025 at the same rate and distance from the Sun, currently set for March 22 and June 19; and, tentatively (暂时性地), September 15 and December 12.

Magic Marty
Marty was new at school. Usually when you’re the new kid, you lie low, but not Marty. On his first day, he made a toothpick disappear. One second he was holding the toothpick, and the next second it was gone! Everyone was asking him how he did it.
“It’s magic!” Marty said proudly. “At my old school, they actually called me Magic Marty.”
“Is he serious ” I whispered to my friend Brian. “Magic Marty And does he always bring toothpicks to school ”
“I don’t know, but that was pretty cool,” Brian said, still watching Marty.
“It’s not magic. He’s tricking everyone,” I thought to myself. “I’ll reveal his secrets.”
That night at home, I found a box of toothpicks. I sat at the kitchen table for almost an hour trying to figure out how Marty had made one disappear. The only thing I learned was how to poke my hand 11 times with a toothpick.
“Matt, it’s getting late. What are you still doing here ” my mom asked.
“A new kid at school is doing magic tricks. I’m just trying to figure out how he did this one trick.”
“How do you know it’s not real magic ” my mom said, grinning.
“There’s no such thing as magic,” I said, shaking my head.
“I’m curious. Why is this so important ” my mom asked.
“Because he’s tricking people!” I cried.
“Sounds as if he’s trying to make friends.” My mom patted my arm. “It’s your bedtime.”
At lunch Marty was going on about how he could make things float. He had a ring in one hand and a pencil in the other.
That’s when I caught a lucky break: a thin piece of fishing line tied around the end of the pencil and attached to a button on Marty’s shirt! Sure enough, he made the ring “float” by sliding it over the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, and soon the whole cafeteria was clapping. When the crowds were gone, I walked over.
