Hello, everyone. My name’s Roy, and I’ll be your teacher for this class. Uh, to begin with, please take a look at the form in front of you. As you all should know by now, this class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3: 15 to 4: 18. We will be meeting in this room for the first half of the course, but we will be using the research lab every other week on Thursday, in Room 405, during the last two months of the class. Uh, this is the text for the class, Beyond Language. Unfortunately, the books haven’t come in yet, but I was told that you should be able to buy them at the bookstore the day after tomorrow. Again, as you can see on your course outline, your final grades are determined by your performance on midterm and final tests, a research project, and classroom attendance. My office hours are from 1:00 to 2:00 on Wednesdays, and you can set up an appointment to meet me at other times as well.

M: Oh, yes. I think it is fantastic!
W: Thanks for your time, Martin.

Physical education, or PE, isn't required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn't offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education The answer is certainly “yes”.
Today many people don't do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn't that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student's studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症).Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don't get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities means many teens don't get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens maintain a healthy weight.
Not doing sports increases teens' risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75% of health-care spending goes towards treating medical conditions that can be forestalled by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition (PCSFN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic performance. Students from programmes with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
24.According to Paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean
A.Making teens attach importance to exercise later.
B.Removing the stress faced by teens at school.

25.What does the underlined word “forestalled” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Measured. B.Prevented. C.Shown. D.Caused.
26.What can we infer about doing sports according to the PCSFN
A.It means making students choose between sports and studies.
B.It helps students make good use of all their time.
C.It means students adjust to their studies better.
D.It helps students do better in their studies.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.Why high school students should receive physical education.
B.Why some schools consider physical education important.
C.How schools can help students love doing sports.
D.How high school students can live a better life.

Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked on these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. The first period—German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period—biology. Our biology teacher is Ms Campeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because she is very to the point. She also has her unique way of saying “be quiet”; she says “alligator”.She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the “king of the swamps (沼泽)”.
My third class was English. After surviving two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr Valassidis, my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was scared. He also talked about how important it was to be focused.Last year was not a very “focused” year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with a conversation online. I planned on being more attentive this year because I wanted to stay an honours student.

A.Her new teachers.
B.Her plan for the new year.
C.Her first day of senior high.
D.Her schedule for Wednesday.
29.What should students do when Ms Campeau says “alligator”
A.Sit still. B.Stop talking.
C.Look at the blackboard. D.Listen carefully.
30.How did the author find her first two classes
A.Unattractive. B.Informative. C.Very tiring. D.Pretty easy.
31.Why did the author feel scared during the third period
A.She couldn't focus on her work.
B.She found the class demanding.
C.She didn't like the teacher.
D.She did poorly at school.

My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic.Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School. “Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents.
Up until the junior year I did not realise my capabilities (能力) as a student. Being in the IB programme, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining (下降) and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes! I could not believe it—I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get better grades myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions that year. I was heartbroken. I realised that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast.
Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honour roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speech and debate competitions.
Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me. I am proud to be a Southside Tiger.
32.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.The writer always thought Southside High School was the best.

D.Life has become easier since the writer came to Southside High School.
33.How did the writer feel when she walked into her junior year
A.Excited. B.Worried. C.Curious. D.Uninterested.
34.Why was the writer's study worse and worse
A.She didn't work hard enough.
B.No one would like to help her.
C.She missed many important competitions.
D.She didn't ask others for help because of her pride.
35.What important lesson has the writer learnt at Southside High School
A.Students should better learn about life.
B.Students should face challenges bravely.
C.Students should be proud of their schools.
D.Students should be careful in choosing schools.

第二节 (满分25分)
67.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze. I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked U ncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
