M: Jacob Kiplimo masterfully reclaimed the Half Marathon world record after the title was taken from him last year. Kiplimo, 24, finished in 56:42 at the 2025 Barcelona Half Marathon, beating the previous Half Marathon record of 57:30 set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha last year in Valencia. At the time, Kejelcha had narrowly beaten Kip limo’s 2021 record by just one second. In Barcelona, Kip limo significantly outpaced Kejelcha’s record by an impressive 48 seconds. Marking the greatest single improvement on the men’s world half marathon record. To do so, Kip limo was averaging about 13.86 miles per hour, or a mile every four minutes and twenty seconds. Kenyan long distance runner Geoffrey Karmworor took second place, finishing nearly two minutes after Kiplimo with a time of 58:44. Samud Milu, also from Kenya, secured third place clocking at 59:40. Kiplimo is the son of two farmers from Queen, a rural district in eastern Uganda To get to school, Kip limo would run over three miles. He entered competitive running through his older brothers, who were also athletes.

Well, in the first photo there’s a group of children, five boys and 6 girls playing football together in the park. They seem to be enjoying themselves and it seems that they won’t mind what the score will be at all. I think they benefit from this activity in several ways. First, they’re getting some exercise, which is always good for them because it’s great for health and helps to relax. At the same time, they’re having fun together, which is important, because it builds up their social relationships and their friendships. Also, it is good for boys and girls to do a bit of sports together because I think playing sports is about having fun with everyone and winning is not the only thing. In the second photo there are four girls talking together in a cafe and laughing. They aren’t so active as the children in the first photo because they’re not doing a sport. But they are communicating more and share their ideas and experiences. I think they also benefit because they can talk about their problems, relax, and also enjoy their friendships. All in all, I think they get a lot from both activities.

M: Nancy, I’m back.
W: Where did you go It’s bitterly cold outside.
M: It doesn’t matter much. See, I’m wearing warm clothes.
W: I can see that. Now that you’re inside, please take the heavy stuff off.
M: Sure.
W: What did you do outside
M: I walked on the ice. The river is frozen solid and some kids in the neighborhood were playing there. Then I hugged one of those big old trees on the bank. You know, they’re the ones I played under with my friends as a kid.
W: Has the snow stopped
M: Yes, I think it’ll clear up soon. But there is ice on the road and the cars are moving very slowly.
W: Lydia phoned just now. They’re not coming to see us due to the bad road conditions.
M: That’s understandable, but I won’t be able to make a snowman with Mike and Lilly. It’s a great pity.
W: They’re such lovely grandchildren.2025级高一英语自编练习(024)

Most people see innovation as a flash of brilliance and Eureka, a new world is born. When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacteria culture he had grown was infected by fungus (霉菌), killing any colonies it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and seemingly in a single stroke, created the new field of antibiotics. The truth, however, is messier. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use.
To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards (产房), significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving scorn instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular miasma theory, which attributed disease to “bad airs”. After his death in 1865, germ theory was accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War II raging, the War Production Board enlisted 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.
Penicillin owes much of its success to government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other visionaries and corporations, who might have the resources to fast-track their ideas. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius and the “eureka moment” breaks down.
24.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.An account of a lab story. B.Redefinition of a traditional view.
C.Correction of a popular misconception. D.An analysis of a scientific phenomenon.
25.What is the message conveyed about Fleming’s story
A.Great minds think alike.
B.The early bird catches the worm.
C.Luck’s got your back when it comes to success.
D.Early work is a steppingstone to later breakthroughs.
26.What does the underlined part “ushering in” mean in paragraph 3
A.Delaying. B.Introducing. C.Predicting. D.Transforming.
27.Which of the following can be the best title
A.Great Innovations: Individuals Are True Heroes.
B.From Failure to Success: The Story of Penicillin.
C.The Lone Genius: Fleming’s Discovery of Penicillin.
D.The Long Road to Penicillin: How Innovation Happens.

Conflict between parents and children is normal. It is part of family life. But conflict that goes on for a long time and gets worse over time can cause stress and can hurt relationships. It is important to communicate with each other and bring conflict to a peaceful solution. You can do this through compromise(让步) or by agreeing to disagree. No matter what else you do, communicate with your children and make sure they know that you love them. This can make dealing with conflict easier and more effective.
In some cases, you may have to change your behaviour to settle a conflict with your child. Some of your child’s behaviour may be a reaction to your behaviour. So, if you want your child to behave in a certain way, one way may be to change your behaviour so that your child will follow your model.
But children should be responsible for their own actions and the results. All parents want to protect their children. But in some cases, unless the child is in physical danger, it may be best to let the child deal with the negative results of things they do.
Collaborate(合作) to develop specific rules and write them down. These may include statements such as how much time they can spend on electronics, and when homework must be completed. Not only are you modeling for your kids how to work together and resolve differences, but also you are working out important guidelines for how your house will operate. Have clear results for misconduct. Thus, if your child disobeys the rules, make it clear that the right to use the toy will be taken away because of his inability to play with it responsibly. Additionally, create routines so that they know when they have free time to themselves after they have completed tasks set out for them. These could include helping feed the family pet, taking a shower, or finishing homework.
28.What's the key to solving the conflict between parents and children
A.Advising children to give in. B.Changing their behaviors.
C.Reaching an understanding. D.Developing some rules.
29.Why do parents need to change their behavior first in the conflict
A.To compromise with their children. B.To take responsibility for their actions.
C.To find a reason to punish children. D.To set a good example for children.
30.What should parents do if the child does something bad
A.Teach him how to solve it. B.Handle the situation for him.
C.Let him deal with it himself. D.Share the solutions with him.
31.Whom is the text written to
A.Parents. B.Children. C.Teachers. D.Students.

This year, my two oldest sons asked me to sign them up for piano lessons. For certain reasons, I decided it would also be a good time for me to take up the piano again, after 30 years.
As a child, I learned not just the piano, but the cello. I played in two orchestras and sang in the school choir. No one forced me to do any of it, but it wasn’t quite a free choice either. When you are the approval-addicted daughter of an over-invested mother, no one needs to apply force. My mom and I were well matched partners in the dance of unspoken expectation and approval-seeking. I did her forcing for her.
For my mother, my musical industriousness wasn’t so much about achievement as identity. She was American by birth, and after marrying my university professor father and moving to London, she spent a decade working to be accepted into the impatient, fraught world of British intellectual society.
In this environment, a diligent daughter lugging a giant cello was a tiny amount of cultural capital, a ticket to belonging. As much as anything could, music made me into the person my mother needed me to be, so that she could be the person she needed to be, in order to escape who she actually was.
And for my part, although I never truly believed that my mother’s love was conditional, I did have the suspicion that there was a performance-related bonus in there.
It was foolish to think that taking up the piano at the same time as my own children would be emotionally uncomplicated. Or perhaps the complication was exactly why I sought it out. Somehow, the piano lessons turn me into both my childhood self, seeking my mother’s approval, and into my mother herself, putting the same high expectations on my own children.
My mother was lucky in that I was temperamentally(性情地) suited to the role she assigned me. My sons are not so much so. They are rambunctious and restless, not wired for lengthy sessions of sitting still and reflecting well on me.
Unconditional love may be at the defining heart of parenthood, but sometimes it can feel impossible to accommodate unconditional love to the worldly practices of day-to-day parenting. The whole job seems set up for conditionality: It would be dishonest to pretend that we have no stake in wanting our children to reflect our own values and preferences.
I’m disappointed when my sons won’t play their role in the script I have written for them, but deep down, I’m also a little thrilled. They are maddeningly, gloriously resistant to the pressure. A secret part of me is delighted by their raging demands for full personhood — beyond my projections and hopes and fears. By the life they claim.

B.the author forced her mum to sign her up for piano lessons against her will

D.the author offered to learn musical instruments to obtain her mom’s approval
33.The author’s mother think of the author’s musical industriousness as ______.
A.a symbol more of family achievement than of social identity
B.a way for her to fit into the British intellectual society at that time
C.proof of her ability to be a qualified mother in front of her husband
D.a result of her selfless cultivation more than the author’s own diligence
34.Which of the following is TRUE from the author’s perspective
A.She doesn’t care about her sons’ levels of playing musical instruments.

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
I had to knock on the taxi to get his attention. Finally, the driver, a man about 60, looked up from behind the wheel and apologized, “I’m sorry, but I was reading a letter,” He sounded as 56 he had a cold or a cough. I told him the 57 (intend) of my coming to the city was to attend a sports competition and said I should go all out 58 (win) the competition.
I asked him to finish his letter. He shook his head, explaining that he had already read it several times and could almost 59 (memory) it. Feeling so curious, I asked who it came from. He answered that he wrote it to a friend of his, who always had 60 (creativity) ideas. “Old Ed and I grew up together. We had no trouble 61 (communicate) with each other,” he said.
“A couple of weeks ago, Ed died. I should have kept 62 contact with him more.” He repeated this, more to himself than to me. I said sometimes we just didn’t seem to find the time. “But we used to find the time,” he said. “Take a look.” He handed the letter over to me.
The first sentence “I’ve been meaning to write for some time, but I’ve always delayed (耽搁) it” reminded me of myself. The letter went on to say that he often thought about the good times they had had together. When I read the part where it said “Your friendship really means a lot to me, more than I can say because I’m not good at saying things like that”, I found myself nodding in agreement. Then I read the last paragraph: “So I thought you’d like to know, that I was thinking of you.” And it was ended with “Your Old Friend, Tom.”.
I said, “I thought your friend’s name, was Ed,” because he 63 (refer) to it in his letter, “I’m Tom,” he explained. “Actually, it’s a letter I wrote to Ed before I knew he’d died. I never put it in the mailbox. I am feeling pretty sorry for him, 64 (particular) during this period. I guess I should have written it sooner.” His face was pale as he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief. The experience has made 65 impression on me.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was August, the busiest season for tourism. Oliver Holland, the owner of a restaurant in a scenic spot, was expecting as many as 500 tourists to visit and eat there each day. With a joyful heart, he jumped into his truck and set off to his restaurant. Before he turned onto the main road he had to go through an eleven-kilometer tunnel. It was the only access to his restaurant from his home.
Two years earlier a truck caught fire inside the tunnel and its closure for repairs was a huge blow to his business. When the road to his restaurant was blocked, the stream of tourists stopped. Although it was difficult, he managed to keep his staff on.
“This year will be a perfect year.” Oliver thought.
Inside the tunnel everything went normal. But when he was near the end, Oliver spotted an unusual light 50 meters ahead. Then he saw something burning.
He stopped in his tracks and saw a tour bus on fire! At the back where the engine was, dozens of tourists were running towards him.
“They’re going the wrong way.” Oliver thought, knowing the tunnel exit was just 500 meters ahead. Then he realized the bus was now burning so fiercely that it was impossible for them to get around it.
As a former volunteer firefighter, Oliver first had to raise the alarm. “A bus is on fire Stop the traffic!” he texted with shaking hands, while thick smoke pouring out of the bus kept blowing in his direction under the influence of the strong wind. In no time it would black out the tunnel, choking and blinding anyone inside it. There was no chance for the poor tourists to survive. Every minute counted.
