Weifang, Shandong province, will exempt (免除) senior middle school tuition fees for the third child in every family born after May 31, 2021, local officials announced on Tuesday at a news conference on optimizing policies encouraging families to have more children.
The tuition fee exemption is one of a series of measures released by the city to encourage the birthrate. Others include subsidies (补贴) for universal childcare services, house purchases and medical expenses for childbirth. The government is also optimizing pregnancy leave and encouraging employers to explore flexible working schedules for female workers.
The newly released measures have received a mixed response from the public with some welcoming the policy, while others say the tuition benefit is too little and too far off to make an impact. “Is the child able to study in a senior middle school if he or she didn’t pass the examination ” said one user mockingly on the Twitter-like platform Sina Weibo.
Cities in the province have been ramping up subsidies, and education and nursery care services to encourage families to have more children.
Shandong province, with a population of over 100 million people, in 2022 recorded its lowest birthrate since 1983. “To encourage the birthrate, the government need to pay attention to the needs of families with only one child instead of only providing subsidies for couples with two or three children. Whether young couples have a high willingness to have one more child depends mostly on their experience of raising the first child,” said Gao Ming, 35, a resident of Qingdao. She added that she didn’t want to have a second children, even if Qingdao took similar measures.
24. What benefits can a woman with a third child enjoy in Weifang
A. The whole pregnancy leave and one-year maternal leave.
B. The promise of her third child’s admission to senior middle school.

A. jokingly B. alarmingly C. lovingly D. willingly
26. Why does the passage end with a quote from Gao Ming
A. To present a fact. B. To illustrate a viewpoint.
C. To solve a problem. D. To make a comparison.
27. Which of the following might be the best title for this passage
A. Shandong witnessed its lowest birthrate in 2022.
B. More measures are introduced to boost childbirth.
C. Newly released measures caused different public responses.
D. Is it a blessing or a curse to have more children

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective.
A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.
They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.
The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.
“While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher.
28. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By giving an example. B. By raising a question.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By describing symptoms.
29. What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research
A. Its background. B. Its process. C. Its findings. D. Its limitations.
30. Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep
A. Its pressure calms people down. B. Its material reduces people’s anxiety.
C. It monitors people’s heart rate. D. It gives off comforting chemicals.
31. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.

An experiment which saw salad seeds sent into space has given hope for the future of growing food on another planet, according to a recently-published study.
The findings have appeared after two kilograms of seeds spent six months on board the International Space Station (ISS) with the astronaut, Tim Peake, as part of his Principia mission.
There, the seeds could have absorbed up to 100 times more radiation (辐射) than on Earth while being influenced by the violent shaking from the stresses of space travel.
When the seeds returned to Earth in 2016, 600,000 children from schools across Britain took part in an experiment, supported by the UK Space Agency, to plant them and monitor their growth, comparing it to that of seeds that had remained on Earth.
The results showed that, while the space seeds grew more slowly and were more sensitive to ageing, they were still able to survive.
Peake said, “When humans travel to Mars, they will need to find ways to feed themselves, and this research helps us understand some of the biology of seed storage and germination (发芽) which will be important for future space missions.”
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) tasked 8,600 schools and groups across Britain with taking part in the controlled study and recording their results as a scientist would.
It was part of a project called Rocket Science, led by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, in partnership with the UK Space Agency.
RHS manager Alana Cama said, “The Rocket Science experiment opened a window into space biology and allowed young people to be at the forefront of creative research.”
“This research project did more than just inspire; it furthered our understanding of the challenges around growing plants in unusual environments and the possibility of growing food on long-term space missions in the future. Inspiring a new generation of botanists and biologists will remain our goal to enrich everyone’s lives through plants.”
32. What do the findings of the experiment indicate
A. Salad seeds sent into space turned out to be a failure.
B. Astronauts successfully grew salad seeds on Mars.
C. The future of growing plants in space looks bright.
D. The radiation makes it impossible for plants to survive.
33. Which word can be filled in the blank to complete the research steps
carry the seeds into space → bring them back to Earth → ______ the growing state → make comparisons
A. Update. B. Observe. C. Protect. D. Improve.
34. Unlike those on Earth, the seeds sent into space ________.
A. can grow 100 times larger in size B. provide enough food for astronauts
C. stop growing when returning to Earth D. are more likely to show signs of ageing
35. What can we learn from what Alana Cama said
A. Growing plants in unusual environments is no longer a challenging task.
B. A new generation of botanists and biologists takes the lead in the research.
C. The project inspires the interests of the young generation in creative fields.
D. The exploration of growing food in space is the central mission in the future.
When traveling, many find themselves in places where the local language is unfamiliar. Once, travelers relied on phrasebooks, but the spread of English has reduced this need. However, most people worldwide still don’t speak English. 36 Increasingly, travelers use free translation apps. These apps allow users to speak into their phones and receive spoken translations almost instantly, bridging language gaps effectively.
37 Google Translate, a well-known name, often makes mistakes. For instance, translating “my wife is gluten-free (不能吃面筋)” into French or Italian as “my wife is without gluten” misses the intended meaning: However, competitors offer better alternatives. 38 It offers no direct translations, but imitates a native speaker’s input.
While AI tools make travel easier, some worry they discourage language learning. Douglas Hofstadter, a language expert, argues that relying on machines for communication robs people of meaningful experiences and accomplishments. However, others believe most people don’t need fluency for casual travel. 39
As AI translation gains popularity, people may divide into two groups: those eager to learn languages for cultural experience and mental challenge, and those who see it as unnecessary effort. This issue is particularly pressing for English speakers, as many schools in English-speaking countries reduce foreign language programs. 40 Direct communication, even if imperfect, brings up deeper connections than relying on technology.
A. Yet, these tools aren’t perfect.
B. And they prefer the convenience of AI.
C. It is a paraphrase rather than a translation.
D. Travel has long been a motivator for study.
E. Despite this, the social significance of language remains.
F. This leads them to rely on gestures, patience, or technology.
G. ChatGPT stands out by creating natural-sounding paraphrases.

M: So, what are you studying I seem to remember that you were going to do art. That was your best subject, wasn’t it
W: No, not really. I just liked the teacher. He was French and had an amazing accent. My favorite subject was history but I couldn’t see what job that would give me.
M: Ah, right. So what did you choose
W: Well, I found it really difficult to decide. I was really good at science but I must admit I never really enjoyed studying it. So, in the end I decided to choose English which was my second favorite subject and I thought it would be more useful to me than studying anything else. So that’s what I’m doing.

W: Good afternoon and welcome to Stanton University. I’m here to tell you about the various dorms we have. We aim to offer accommodation to all first-year students. First of all, there’s Brown Hall, which is not the most modern of buildings, but it is very popular. Unlike the other halls, it has recently had a gym built in its basement. Another option is Blake Residence, built like a large house. Everybody cooks and eats together. It has a private garden and is even more peaceful because this is an all-girl’s residence but boys can visit it. The largest one we have is Queen’s Building and this has been upgraded recently. The original parking area has been built on and each bedroom now has its own shower room. A further option is the Parkway Flats with a preservation order. This has meant that only a limited amount could be done to upgrade it, and the surrounding area is important. So parking is not permitted around the flats. However, the flats do have many extra facilities such as a special computer room, a small library and a self-service restaurant. The cost of meals is covered in the fees so it does look a bit more expensive.

D 29. B 30. A 31. C

C 33. B 34. D 35. C

F 37. A 38. G 39. B 40. E
36. 前文“When traveling, many find themselves in places where the local language is unfamiliar. Once, travelers relied on phrasebooks, but the spread of English has reduced this need. However, most people worldwide still don’t speak English.(旅行时,许多人发现自己在当地语言不熟悉的地方。曾经,旅行者依赖于常用语手册,但英语的传播减少了这种需求。然而,世界上大多数人仍然不会说英语)”提到“旅行时很多人会身处不熟悉当地语言的地方,虽然英语的传播减少了对常用语手册的依赖,但世界上大多数人仍不会说英语”。选项F“This leads them to rely on gestures, patience, or technology.(这导致他们依靠手势、耐心或技术)”中“this”指代前文人们身处陌生语言环境且多数人不会英语的情况,自然地引出后文人们使用免费翻译应用程序这一技术手段来解决问题。故选F。
37. 前文“Increasingly, travelers use free translation apps. These apps allow users to speak into their phones and receive spoken translations almost instantly, bridging language gaps effectively.(越来越多的旅行者使用免费的翻译软件。 故选A。
G“ChatGPT stands out by creating natural - sounding paraphrases.(ChatGPT通过生成听起来自然的意译脱颖而出)”符合语境。“意译”与后文“模仿母语者输入”相呼应,且“脱颖而出”表明它是谷歌翻译竞争对手中的优秀代表。故选G。
39. 前文“While AI tools make travel easier, some worry they discourage language learning. Douglas Hofstadter, a language expert, argues that relying on machines for communication robs people of meaningful experiences and accomplishments. However, others believe most people don’t need fluency for casual travel.(虽然人工智能工具让旅行变得更容易,但一些人担心它们会阻碍语言学习。语言专家Douglas Hofstadter认为,依赖机器进行交流剥夺了人们有意义的经历和成就。然而,另一些人认为,大多数人在休闲旅行时不需要流利的英语)”提到“一些人担心人工智能工具会阻碍语言学习,而另一些人认为大多数人在休闲旅行中不需要流利的语言能力”。选项B“And they prefer the convenience of AI.(而且他们更喜欢人工智能的便利)”中“他们”指代前文认为旅行中不需要流利语言能力的人,进一步说明了这些人的态度,即更倾向于使用人工智能翻译工具的便利。故选B。
40. 前文“This issue is particularly pressing for English speakers, as many schools in English-speaking countries reduce foreign language programs.(这个问题对说英语的人来说尤其紧迫,因为许多英语国家的学校减少了外语课程)”提到“许多英语国家的学校减少了外语课程”,下文“Direct communication, even if imperfect, brings up deeper connections than relying on technology.(直接交流,即使不完美,也比依赖技术带来更深层次的联系)”强调“直接交流,即使不完美,也比依赖技术能带来更深入的联系”。 E“Despite this, the social significance of language remains.(尽管如此,语言的社会意义仍然存在)”符合语境。故选E。

Kindness encourages us to reach out and help others selflessly, while perseverance instills in us the courage to overcome challenges without giving up. These virtues not only build our individual characters but also play a crucial role in the prosperity and development of our country. I firmly believe that if each one of us makes a conscious effort to practice these traditional virtues, our society will be bathed in warmth and filled with positive energy.
