Over the last half century, obesity (肥胖症) rates have skyrocketed. In 1962, 46 percent of adults in the US were considered overweight. By 2010, that figure had jumped to 75 percent.
Obesity is a complex problem with many causes. But among the likely suspects, sugar is high on the list. A variety of research has drawn a link (联系) between sugar consumption (消耗) and overweight. As sugar consumption has increased, so has our waistline.
“I don't think we have enough evidence yet to suggest that sugar is the reason for obesity,” says Johns Hopkins, a cardiologist. “But there is enough evidence to say that too much sugar consumption is an important contributor to weight gain.”
All those sweet snacks seem to be affecting the heart as well. In a study published in JAMA: Internal Medicine, researchers compared people who consumed a lot of added sugar accounting for 17 to 21 percent of their total daily calories with people who ate less sugar—just 8 percent of their total calories. Those in the high sugar group had a 38 percent greater risk of dying from heart disease.
Excess weight increases the risk of many diseases like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes. Research by the team of Ndumele has shown that those factors usually explain the link between obesity and heart disease. “All of those factors make it more likely that someone will develop heart disease,” says Ndumele.
In other words, there are many reasons to aim for a healthy weight. And cutting back on sugar is a good place to start.

Taking exercise in a crowded, noisy gym will improve your muscle but may not make much difference in your stress level. By contrast, hiking improves not only your physical fitness level, but your mental health as well. “I hike with friends every week. Whether I am wandering down a flat path along a river or climbing a rocky mountain in the wilderness, hiking can be beneficial to me because it exposes me to outdoor scenes such as mountains and rivers, which can always offer me good ideas about paintings and music,” Marry Copper, a hiker said.
Experts agree that hiking reduces stress. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA), hiking increases the body's production of endorphins(内啡肽), a type of chemical that improves mood. Endorphins also help you sleep more soundly, which will lower your stress level. However, not all scientists agree that hiking raises your endorphin level. Instead, some researchers believe that hiking causes the release of the chemical norepinephrine(去甲肾上腺素), which helps make you less excited or upset.
The controversy (争议) is ongoing, but it is clear that however it happens, hiking is useful when you are feeling anxious. Hiking can also help improve your confidence. Walking down a path is a repetitive motion, which can lead your brain into relaxing; you may “zone out” to the point where you won't be thinking about anything in particular. Being outside in the open air may also help you exercise better because most people do indoors; getting out from under a roof can lift your spirits.
Hiking may improve your mood more than a gym workout will, but your risks are also greater. People sometimes try to make their own way rather than stick to established paths. They are proud to say they like to have an adventure. However, people who try to do something new could be attacked by wildlife and get hurt and lost. So stick to the known roads and bring a cellphone with you, and always tell someone where and when you are going hiking, even if you have a partner going with you.
28.Why does Marry Copper like hiking
A.She dislikes exercising in the gym.
B.She can meet new friends when hiking.
C.She can draw inspiration from nature.
D.She has the spirit of adventure in the wilderness.
29.What do we know about the study of hiking
A.Scientists have reached an agreement.
B.Sound sleep can increase the body's endorphin level.
C.Stress is caused by the body's production of endorphin.
D.The chemical norepinephrine could make people calm.
30.What is the author's attitude towards exploring new roads during hiking
A.Negative. B.Positive.
C.Objective. D.Unclear.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.How can hiking cause controversy?
B.Why do people like exercising outdoors
C.What do hikers like to do in the wilderness?
D.What benefits can hiking bring to people

How Do Smartphones Affect Our Sleep
Smartphones can be addictive and may lead to problematic use. This is even more true for teenagers. Smartphone addiction can also negatively affect students' performance in school. Many studies have also shown the prolonged screen time is bad for our sleep. But is it different if you are actually addicted to your phone Is that more of a problem for sleep than just spending time on your screen
We asked 1,043 UK students aged between 18 to 30 to complete two questionnaires. The first one was about the students' smartphone use, which includes questions like whether they miss planned work due to smartphone use to see whether they are addicted. The second questionnaire assessed the quality of students' sleep. We then analyzed the data to find if there is an association between smartphone addiction and some factors like age, ethnicity, or gender.
Around 39% of the students showed several signs of smartphone addiction. It was more prevalent among students under 21. Prolonged use was strongly linked to addiction. About 54% of the students who used their smartphones for more than 5 hours a day suffered from addiction. Only 20% of those who used them for under 2 hours a day were addicted.
Smartphone use before bed is also an important factor. The addiction levels were high among students who used their phones less than 30 minutes before bedtime and low among those who stopped using their phones more than one hour before time.
According to our study, smartphone addiction is also related to using it in late hours. For example, if you use your phone after 1 am, you are three times as likely to have an addiction. So the amount of time spent on your phone is not enough to suggest addiction. But combining that with the latest time you use your phone can be a good indicator.
Our study also shows that smartphone addiction could be harming people's sleep. And this is not just because of screen time. People could suffer from addiction and poor sleep even when they used their phones for under 2 hours a day. But use in the late hours or right before bedtime tended to harm the students' sleep.
If you have a smartphone, it could have a bad impact on your health. Students need to take special actions to prevent it from damaging their health before it's too late.
32.What does the underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Accepted. B.Common.
C.Controlled. D.Understood.
33.According to the study, what is a good indicator for smartphone addiction
A.Age of smartphone users.
B.How long smartphones are used per day.
C.Latest time on phone.
D.Time and duration of using smartphones.
34.What do we know about the result of the study
A.Using smartphones right before bedtime harms sleep quality.
B.54% of the participants use their phones more than 5 hours a day.
C.39% of the participants aged under 21 are addicted to smartphones.
D.Using smartphones less than 2 hours a day keeps you away from addiction.
35.Based on the study, what action may a student take to prevent the addiction to smartphones
A.Stop playing games on the phone.
B.Watch relaxing videos before bed.
C.Stop using phones 30 minutes before sleep.
D.Take a break every 2 hours on his phone.

Valerie studies at a big university. At the same time, she maintains a full time job so that she can pay for her tuition and her living expenses. So Valerie spends most of the day at the office, then goes to class three days a week. She also stays up late at night to study for her classes.
Valerie does not do any physical exercise. Between work and university, she is so busy that she thinks she does not have time for any physical activity.
Sadly, she rarely eats home made meals. She usually just grabs a bag of chips or a hamburger as she leaves her office to take the bus to university. Since she is convinced that she does not have time to make a healthy dinner when she gets home, she eats lots of pizzas that she orders over the phone.
After dinner, she starts studying and preparing her assignments. Valerie does not sleep very much because of it. She feels grumpy (脾气坏的) when she wakes up early in the morning, and she is irritable (易怒的) at work. After her long day, she feels tired in class, and it is hard for her to concentrate.
To make matters even worse, Valerie keeps getting sick. This makes her miss work and class. She is miserable! She just wants to feel good. Her grades start to go down because of her illnesses. As she thinks about her whole life situation, she gets so frustrated that she does not even want to study anymore.
During her mid year break, Valerie decides to make some big changes. First, she learns how to make some easy, healthy recipes. She actually finds that she saves a lot of money by preparing her food herself, and the food tastes much better too! After a nearly dinner and some quiet reading, Valerie goes to bed early every night. Now she really feels refreshed in the morning.

Hi, everyone! This is the monthly meeting of our club. We've been fortunate to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we'll hear something different. We're honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it's challenging to be a health expert, because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren't willing to change their views about food and nutrition, as there is so much confusing information online. It's really important to hear what experts say and that's why we've invited Emma here. She isn't going to tell us about everything we should eat, but she will teach us to make better choices. Let's welcome Emma Wilson.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Then she decides to give something else a try. Her office is not really so far from her university, so one day after work she tries walking there. As she walks down the street, looking at all the people, the shops, and the movement in the city, she remembers how much she hates being stuck on the bus in traffic. In fact, she finds that she can get to class almost as fast by walking. And she is so much happier when she arrives!
When the new term begins, Valerie maintains her healthy habits. She sets time aside on the weekends to study and do her assignments. Because she is sleeping and eating better now, she can finally concentrate and needs to spend much less time studying. It is a huge improvement. Valerie saves money on food and transportation, she has much more energy, she feels less stressed, and her grades are better. She is glad she finally started to take care of herself. Now she finally enjoys all of her different activities and feels happy about her life.

You don't go outside to do any exercise, which is harmful to your physical and mental health. It would be of great benefit to your health if you could take more exercise. Time spent on exercise is not wasted. Actually, exercise can improve your physical health and ease your mind. Only when you are in good health can you be strong enough to better fight against diseases. Therefore, I suggest that you take at least one hour's exercise every day.
