Four Great Explorers in History
Christopher Columbus
Italian (1451-1506)
Christopher Columbus did not “discover” America, contrary to popular belief. However, he came across the continent rather accidentally while taking what he thought was a shortcut from Europe to Asia. Despite others landing there first, Columbus made Europeans more aware of this New World, leading to increased contact between the lands and ultimately the development of the modern Western world.
Ferdinand Magellan
Portuguese (1480-1521)
Ferdinand Magellan had a dream:to visit the Maluku Islands. Magellan set off with five ships and more than 200 men, heading west via South America. Unaware how vast the Pacific was, they faced great challenges and many died. The remaining crew reached the islands, where Magellan was shot with a poisoned arrow in a fight with Mactan people, and died in 1521. Only one ship and 18 men from Magellan's crew made it back to Spain.
Francis Drake
English (1540-1596)
On becoming a ship's captain in his 20s, Francis Drake was on his way to fulfilling his dream of finding an undiscovered land in the Pacific. Drake's travels took him to the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico before finally starting a secret expedition to the western coast of North America. His circumnavigation (环球航行) helped identify the true geography of our planet.
Roald Amundsen
Norwegian (1872-1928)
His heart set on exploring the Arctic, Roald Amundsen quit university and began his adventures via land, sea and air, first sailing through the Northwest Passage. Beaten to the North Pole, Amundsen was determined to be the first to reach the South Pole, and he was. Subsequently crossing the Arctic by air, Amundsen became one of the greatest polar explorers.

The spring before our son Hank was scheduled to enter kindergarten, we were invited to the school's “Kindergarten Round up”. The title led me to believe that Hank and I would be enjoying a fun night.
We arrived to find several on the spot tests to see where Hank ranked academically. Somewhat nervously, I watched as Hank recited the alphabet (字母表), counted as high as he could, and arranged blocks in a series of confusing patterns. So far, so good. I breathed a sigh of relief.
“All right, Hank,” the tester said, “just a few more easy questions.” Then she explained to me that she wanted to hear what Hank thinks was the logical thing to do in certain situations. I smiled and nodded, but inside I felt a fresh flash of panic. What if Hank couldn't reach any logical conclusions
After several dialogues, like “Eating too much sugar?” “Tooth decay!”, the tester nodded her head. “Okay, Hank, tell me what you'd do if you went into a dark room.” Without thinking, Hank said, “Be brave.”
The tester waited a moment before promoting, “What else would you do Wouldn't you turn on a light?” “Oh, yeah,” Hank said, “if I could reach it.”
Obviously, being brave wasn't the expected answer, but as I listened, all I could think about was how many events awaited him when bravery would be enormously helpful. While it's smart to turn on a light, it never hurts to be brave while you're waiting for your eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness. From the mouth of my child, I realized that I'd handed my son advice that applied to my life just as much as it did to his.
Hank and I left the “Kindergarten Round up” with a light heart, both believing he was going to be just fine.
24.What's the purpose of the “Kindergarten Round up”?
A.To evaluate kids' academic level.
B.To help kids pass kindergarten tests.
C.To let parents learn about kindergarten.
D.To please pre schoolers.
25.How did the author feel at the beginning of the logical test
A.Pleased. B.Relaxed.
C.Worried. D.Confident.
26.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 6
A.She taught Hank an important lesson.
B.She was happy about Hank's answer.
C.She got valuable advice from the tester.
D.She was dissatisfied with the tester's reaction.
27.What's the best title for the text
A.No Need to Turn on a Light
B.Kindergarten Will Just Be Fine
C.A Fruitless Kindergarten Round up
D.Being Brave Is the Same Important
C
An obstacle usually refers to a difficulty or problem that prevents you from achieving something. Whether it was in your past, or you're presently facing an obstacle, you have to resolve it. Some people avoid obstacles or deny their existence. Others let obstacles control them, and they feel defeated. Your attitude towards obstacles will define the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it. Here are some more great things to love about obstacles.
First, obstacles give you purposes. Sometimes obstacles can reset your goals. You might have always had a particular way of doing things, or wanted to pursue certain goals; but when you're faced with setbacks or difficulties, you're forced to re think, and re examine your path. You may end up focusing on something new and exciting. Or, you may concentrate on something that you otherwise wouldn't have if not for the particular setback. By having to overcome an obstacle, you'll be fulfilling a purpose, rather than just going through the motions. Second, obstacles prepare you for the unexpected. Obstacles serve as guides for where to go next. Even though obstacles can bring out many negative emotions in us, such as frustration, anger, or sadness, it's important to realize that they don't stop you from reaching your intended goals. Instead, they, in a way, give you time to stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will happen along the way. Obstacles shift your perspective.
Obstacles whether you like them or not are unavoidable. Life will never stop throwing you new obstacles. So, the best thing to do is know how to better see and address these obstacles, and transform them into opportunities for self improvement. The more you're able to see obstacles as being an advantage to your life, the better you'll be at managing them.
Accepting obstacles will be rewarding. It will make you constantly change and adapt to new situations, allowing you to grow into a better version of yourself.
28.What does the word “obstacle” in the passage probably mean
A.Passion. B.Adversity.
C.Reputation. D.Expedition.
29.What determines the outcome of obstacles you face
A.Your own attitude. B.Your quick adaptation.
C.Your adequate preparation. D.Your optimistic perseverance.
30.How would obstacles result in benefits
A.They prevent your negative emotions.
B.They give you advantages over others.
C.They make you think quickly and critically.
D.They allow you to view things from new angles.
31.What's the main idea of the passage
A.Avoiding obstacles does harm to life.
B.Loving obstacles benefits a lot.
C.Obstacles are actually unavoidable.
D.Obstacles are double edged swords.
D
A woman in Brazil kept awake during brain surgery moved doctors to tears when she began to sing a song she wrote herself. And the moment is unlike anything we've seen before!
Doctors diagnosed (诊断) 45 year old Maria Filomena da Costa with a brain tumor (肿瘤). It needed to be removed, but the location of the mass made things tricky. Removing the tumor without impacting Maria's speech and cognition wouldn't be easy. As a result, doctors determined Maria would need to be kept awake during brain surgery! “There was a big risk Maria would lose her speech and it was important that she talked to the team during surgery,” neurosurgeon Carlos Rocha explained.
Brain surgery is scary enough. But needless to say, this particular operation was terrifying. And Maria admits she found the idea of surgeons working on her brain while she was awake was frightening. So, the team delayed the operation until Maria was psychologically prepared for everything involved.
When it came time to operate, doctors used anesthesia to keep Maria “slightly sleepy”, but still able to speak and respond. The team planned to quiz her on colors, names, etc. “We had prearranged to do speech mapping with electrical stimuli (刺激物) to the brain and tests during surgery asking her to name objects and colors, read and talk,” Carlos said. But Maria surprised everyone when she started singing a song written by herself as doctors began removing the tumor!
Maria's actions completely stunned the doctors. Not only did it provide guarantee for the doctors that Maria's speech would be just fine, but it moved the team in a powerful way. “There were a number of professionals involved in this procedure and it was an emotional experience. Everyone couldn't stop talking about her courage,” anesthesiologist Paula Fialho said. The 8 hour surgery went well, and within only 4 days, Maria headed home from the hospital. She's walking, talking, and is well on her way to a full recovery!
32.What can we learn about the brain tumor in Paragraph 2
A.It put the doctors at risk.
B.It kept the patients awake.
C.It was diagnosed 45 years ago.
D.It was at a position hard to tackle.
33.Why did the doctors postpone the operation
A.Maria needed enough mental preparation.
B.Maria demanded a better surgery plan.
C.Maria longed to have more speech practice.
D.Maria was too scared to accept it completely.
34.How did the doctors make Maria safe and sound during the operation
A.They asked her to sing.
B.They gave her a careful test.
C.They used anesthesia to make her sleep.
D.They helped her react to something by speaking.
35.Which of the following best describes Maria
A.Enthusiastic and ambitious. B.Professional and emotional.
C.Optimistic and courageous. D.Cooperative and generous.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My family was poor so I was pleasantly surprised when my mother came up with the money to purchase my fourth grade class picture. Twenty two students lined up in three rows and faced the camera with smiles. My teacher, Mrs Cornell, stood to the side. She kept strict rules, but I loved her. I held my one and only class picture like a new teddy bear. I wanted to be a person like her.
As the years passed, I'd run across that fourth grade picture. It always reminded me that I'd wanted to become a teacher. Even after getting married, I would still long for the teaching career I never got to have.
Once my children were all in school, I had some time to myself. The eagerness to teach was still there, but I was now forty two. I hadn't been a student for over twenty years. Having only my husband's income made money an issue as well.
Anyway, I managed to come up with enough money for my first term. With a step of faith, I moved forward. College proved to be a blessing and a challenge. I attended lessons and challenged myself to learn new things. My days and nights were spent on difficult textbooks. I would look at the picture when I was tired. Gradually, I found myself enjoying the classes.
One day, a professor mentioned a grant (补助金) was available to those going into education upon their graduation. Would they even consider giving the money to someone of my age I had a few good years left in me, but I couldn't compete with the youngsters who had a lifetime of teaching ahead of them. Feeling I had nothing to lose, I began the lengthy application process followed by an interview. All I could do was wait and hope.
Several weeks later, I received a call from my professor telling me I'd been selected as a candidate for the program. I'd have to invest some volunteer hours as required, but my college expenses would be covered. I hung up the phone with teary eyes. I couldn't believe my dream of teaching was becoming a reality. I continued studying hard through the next three years.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Dear fellow students,
My name is Li Hua. It is my great honor to share with you my opinions on “How to deal with adversity”.
In the past few years, I have met many difficulties in my life. For example, being not outgoing, I was not good at communicating with others, and had few friends. What's worse, my grades were filled with many ups and downs, which made me really upset. Fortunately, my parents and teachers didn't give me up and encouraged me to keep going. As weeks went by, I slowly realized that I had to take actions to make changes. I tried to ignore daily problems, think positively and look optimistic. Soon I started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself.
As young students, we should always keep our heads up and never give up on ourselves no matter what life throws at us.
That's all. Thank you!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The graduation day finally came.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍ For the next eighteen years, I taught fourth grade.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍
The graduation day finally came. My family sat in the audience as I, a graduate with gray hair, crossed the stage. I felt so pleased and excited. First, I sincerely expressed my thanks to my professors who encouraged me through the entire learning journey. Then I thanked my family. It was their support that helped me complete my formal education. I made up my mind to work hard and serve as a good teacher.
For the next eighteen years, I taught fourth grade. I began each school year by telling the students about myself. I showed them my fourth grade class picture. I told them the story of how I had wanted to be a teacher and that how long it took me to realize my dream. That old class picture was an encouragement for me to do what I wanted to do. This experience makes me realize that if you are working on something that you really care about, you must stick to it until you succeed.

After several dialogues, like “Eating too much sugar? ” “ Tooth decay!”, the tester nodded her head. “Okay, Hank, tell me what you'd do if you went into a dark room.” Without thinking, Hank said, “Be brave.”
The tester waited a moment before promoting, “What else would you do Wouldn't you turn on a light?” “ Oh, yeah,” Hank said, “if I could reach it.”

I couldn’t believe my dream of teaching was becoming a reality. I continued studying hard through the next three years.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The graduation day finally came.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍

[精彩范文]
