Tom Sawyer Play Is an Adventure
A 35 minute hand clapping, foot stomping musical version of a Mark Twain favorite returns with this Tall Stacks festival.
“Tom Sawyer: A River Adventure” has all the good stuff, including the fence painting, the graveyard, the island and the cave. It is adapted by Joe McDonough, with music by David Kisor. That's the local stage writing team that creates many of the Children's Theatre of Cincinnati's original musicals, along with the holiday family musicals at Ensemble Theatre.
This year Nathan Turner of Burlington is Tom Sawyer, and Robbie McMath of Fort Mitchell is Huck Finn.
Turner, a 10th grader at School for Creative and Performing Arts, is a familiar presence on Cincinnati's stages. He is a star actor of Children's Theatre, having played leading roles in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “The Wizard of Oz”, and is fresh from Jersey Production “Ragtime”.
McMath is a junior at Beechwood High School. He was in the cast of “Tom Sawyer” when it was first performed and is a Children's Theatre regular, with five shows to his credit. This summer he attended Kentucky's Governor's School for the Arts in Musical Theatre.
Note to teachers: Children's Theatre has a study guide demonstrating how math and science can be taught through “Tom Sawyer”. For downloadable lessons, visit the official website of Children's Theatre.

Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in New York City. During his long life, he watched America grow from a young nation to the strongest industrial power in the world. Whitman was influenced by events around him. But his poetry speaks of the inner self. He celebrated great people like President Abraham Lincoln. He also celebrated common people.
As a young man, Whitman worked as a school teacher, printer and newspaper reporter. He was 36 years old when his first book of poetry was published. He called it Leaves of Grass. It had only twelve poems. The poems were written in free verse. The lines did not follow any set form. Some lines were short and some were long. The words at the end of each line did not have a similar sound. They did not rhyme.
One of America's greatest thinkers and writers immediately recognized the importance of Leaves of Grass. Ralph Waldo Emerson praised Whitman's work. But most other poets and writers said nothing or denounced it.
The American Civil War began in 1861. During the war, Whitman worked without pay at army hospitals. He helped care for wounded and dying soldiers. He sat beside these men for hours. He brought them food and wrote letters for them. After the Civil War, Whitman worked for government agencies. He watched the United States try to heal itself and increase democracy (民主). To Walt Whitman, democracy was more than a political system or idea. It was the natural form of government for free people. Whitman believed democracy was meant to honor the rights of every person and the equality of all people.
In 1873, Walt Whitman suffered a stroke (中风). He spent the last years of his life in Camden, New Jersey and wrote more poems. Whitman was poor and weak during the last years of his life. He died in 1892.
24.Walt Whitman expressed his feelings by ________.

27.It can be inferred from the fourth paragraph that Whitman was a(n) ________.
A.brave soldier B.man of devotion
C.honest official D.great politician

Poetry is one of the important art forms of literature, and is an easy way to express your feelings. Moreover, everyone understands it in their own way. Some find relief in poems; some read them simply for peace; some read poems for simple artistic pleasure.
There are some special features of poetry, which make it quite different from other forms of literature. First of all, poems have rhythmic patterns. Generally, most parts of a poem follow the same form of rhythm. Poems may have rhyme, but they don't have to. The lines are neatly arranged together so that they express a particular feeling or emotion.
There can be various types of poems but according to the pattern or the form, there are mainly three types:
Lyrics: The lyric mainly concentrates on human thoughts and emotions rather than a story. Lyrics always bear song like appeal. These are mainly short poems. Popular lyric poem forms are the elegy, the ode and the sonnet. William Shakespeare, Edmund Waller and John Keats are some of the greatest lyric writers of all times.
Narrative poems: This type of poetry tells a story. Narrative poems are usually long poems. Epics and ballads fall under this type. Some of the greatest epic poets are John Milton, Dante, Edgar Allan Poe, Alexander Pope, William Shakespeare, etc.
Dramatic poems: Any drama that is written in verse is a dramatic poem. These poems generally tell a story. Black verse, dramatic monologues and closet drama belong to this type. William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson are some of the great dramatic poets.
Whatever the form is, one thing, which, cannot be denied, is that poetry is one of the most powerful tools to express our feelings.
28.What do we know about lyrics
①They are similar to songs. ②They usually tell stories.
③They are not very long. ④The sonnet is a type of lyric.
A.①②③ B.②③④
C.①②④ D.①③④
29.Which of the following belongs to narrative poetry
A.The elegy. B.The dramatic monologue.
C.The epic. D.The ode.
30.We can know from the text that ________.
A.poems are weak in showing feelings
B.narrative poems are shorter than lyric poems
C.some poets write more than one type of poem
D.the sonnet and the ballad belong to the same type
31.This passage is written mainly to ________.
A.tell us some simple facts about poetry
B.teach us how to write poems
C.give some advice on reading poems
D.make us interested in poems
D
Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive (互相排斥) career paths. But that wasn't always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging (再现) among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of Illingworth's workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17 syllable long poem, which spotlighted water, a fluid that featured in all of the group members' research projects. “It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. “We do a disservice (伤害) to ourselves to think that scientists can't be artistic and that art can't be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands off PowerPoint slides. “Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two way dialogue between experts and nonexperts,” he says. Scientist poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees. Poetry provides a way to translate complex scientific concepts into a language that everyone can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We're all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share.
32.What is the purpose of mentioning the celebrities in Paragraph 1
A.To display they were talented.
B.To confirm they were out of favor.
C.To encourage different career paths.
D.To show poetry and science can be combined.
33.What are Illingworth's workshops aimed to do
A.Promote a new science poetry journal.
B.Inspire outsiders to pursue their careers in science.
C.Encourage science communication through poems.
D.Get scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research.
34.What does Illingworth think of the dominant ways of science communication
A.Conventional. B.Effective.
C.Innovative. D.Complex.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Scientists Take on Poetry

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Would you say you are more of a scientist or an artist?” I commonly heard this question as I was preparing to start my neuroscience doctoral program, often after I told my teachers and classmates that I love writing poetry. I learned to respond, “A scientist”—not because it was necessarily true, but because I felt it would win me more respect. As an undergraduate, poetry had been a way for me to relax. But in grad school, I wanted to be seen as just as devoted to my work as those around me, who appeared completely undisturbed by nonscientific hobbies. So, I left my poetry by the wayside—but it wasn't long before I felt a huge void (空虚) in my life.
By the second year of my PhD, my paper project had become very boring and tiring and I was starting to burn out. One afternoon, a student mentioned the weekly event held by the university's poetry club, of which she was a leader. After hearing how much I enjoyed poetry, she declared, “You should come!” A few days later, I sat in a crowded cafe, excited to be here and to be a part of it.
Through reading and writing poems, I rediscovered how to relax. However, I still worried about appearing less than fully dedicated to my science. So, when a senior grad student in my lab whispered, “I hear you love poetry!” I froze. My heart began to race. She went on to invite me to perform at our department's art gala (联欢会). “By the way, Cheryl will be performing!” she added.
I was surprised to discover that Cheryl, our lab's principal investigator, was a dancer. I excitedly sought her out, and we spoke for more than an hour about how science and art could intertwine (交织). She explained that my skill at picking up patterns in experimental results was the same one I used to create rhymes in my poems. With Cheryl as a model, I decided to perform at the gala, for once not feeling I had anything to hide.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The night of the gala, I was amazed at the talent of the performers.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍ Since then, I decided to be my whole self.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍

M:Thanks for joining us tonight, Gigi. Your project The School in the Cloud has been gaining some steam. Could you tell our audience about it W:Sure. It is a project I created in 2017. You see, there are many retired teachers out there. Once a teacher, always a teacher. I wanted to find a way to make them available online for children around the world. M:So, how does The School in the Cloud work W:It is quite simple. In the self organized learning classrooms, students are given a big question. They choose their own groups and can change groups anytime. Groups are expected to present what they have learned at the end of each session. M:Have you come across any challenges W:Quite often, in fact. We've had problems with sound or vision, or even both. And we have to try communication by text. There is also no guarantee that the Internet will always work. In some areas there are shortages of proper equipment. M:Now Gigi, some of our viewers posted questions for you on our website. It seems quite a few of them are looking to join your project. W:Really Well, I'd like to say “welcome aboard” to them all.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

The night of the gala, I was amazed at the talent of the performers. Chatting with the other performers, I found many of them were also graduate students. I realized many shared my concern that we might interpret a passion for art as a lack of passion for science. But over the course of the evening, I found myself at peace with the two halves of my identity, and I got the feeling that others felt that same peace, too.
Since then, I decided to be my whole self. While completing my PhD, I often wrote poetry in my spare time. Some teachers and students have seen the value of this outside interest; others have been distrustful. But when I have my own doubts, I think of some famous figures, whose achievements remind me that art and science can balance and enhance each other. And now, if someone asks me whether I'm more of a scientist or an artist, I will proudly say, “Both.”

M:Thanks for joining us tonight, Gigi. Your project The School in the Cloud has been gaining some steam. Could you tell our audience about it
W:Sure. It is a project I created in 2017. You see, there are many retired teachers out there. Once a teacher, always a teacher. I wanted to find a way to make them available online for children around the world.
M:So, how does The School in the Cloud work
W:It is quite simple. In the self organized learning classrooms, students are given a big question. They choose their own groups and can change groups anytime. Groups are expected to present what they have learned at the end of each session.

答案
So, I left my poetry by the wayside—but it wasn’t long before I felt a huge void (空虚) in my life.
By the second year of my PhD, my paper project had become very boring and tiring and I was starting to burn out. One afternoon, a student mentioned the weekly event held by the university‘s poetry club, of which she was a leader.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The night of the gala, I was amazed at the talent of the performers.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍
Since then, I decided to be my whole self.﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍

答案
Since then, I decided to be my whole self. While completing my PhD, I often wrote poetry in my spare time. Some teachers and students have seen the value of this outside interest; others have been distrustful. But when I have my own doubts, I think of some famous figures, whose achievements remind me that art and science can balance and enhance each other. And now, if someone asks me whether I'm more of a scientist or an artist, I will proudly say, “Both.”
