Sometimes you meet people in the most unexpected places who can change your life. When Michael Skinner, a student at the University of Notre Dame, called for an Uber after a formal event during Junior Parents Weekend, he had no idea that the driver would leave a lasting impact on him. As the engineering major made a friendly conversation with his driver, Doug Anderson, the New Jersey native asked him about his family.
That's when Anderson began telling Skinner about his 11 year old daughter Tori who he and his wife adopted when she was five. Tori was born with a condition that caused her to have only half a palm and one finger on her hands. Anderson explained to his empathetic passenger that her hands made his daughter feel embarrassed and unhappy looking so different from her peers.
Wanting to help their child, he and his wife spoke to doctors from several hospitals about getting their daughter prosthetics (假肢)—only to hear that a child quickly outgrows the artificial limbs, making them even more expensive for the parents.
With the family welcoming two other children with special needs, the Andersons were extra careful to watch their spending. The circumstances led Anderson—who's 58—to become an Uber driver to make some extra money that also allowed him to interact with all kinds of people. People like Skinner, who luckily enough, was able to help his family. If there is such a thing as fate, the pair's meeting was a welcome chance encounter. Skinner works at e Nable, an informal student engineering club that 3D printed robotic hands and they needed a child to test their creation after enduring an ongoing lag in their projects. Tori was the perfect candidate.
After several back and forth meetings, Tori can write, throw a baseball, and perform many other acts once considered impossible thanks to her new hands. Although Anderson never took the driving job expecting an outcome as bright as this, the father feels thankful fate stepped in.
24.How did Skinner know of Tori's condition
A.From a student engineering club.
B.From a conversation with Tori's father.
C.From his professor who taught engineering.
D.From a meeting during Junior Parents Weekend.
25.Why does Anderson become an Uber driver
A.To kill time. B.To gain sympathy.
C.To earn extra money. D.To befriend some doctors.
26.Which of the following can best describe the pair's meeting
A.Coincidental. B.Interesting.
C.Regular. D.Scheduled.
27.What does Anderson think of the test result of 3D printed robotic hands on his daughter
A.Puzzled. B.Doubtful.
C.Dissatisfied. D.Grateful.

Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution (变革).
In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades' professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now—several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell's point is to wake up those responsible for AI—the technology companies and world leaders—so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.
28.What does the phrase “In the wrong hands” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.If read by someone poorly educated.
B.If reviewed by someone ill intentioned.
C.If written by someone less competent.
D.If translated by someone unacademic.
29.What is a feature of AI by Design according to the text
A.It is packed with complex codes.
B.It adopts a down to earth writing style.
C.It provides step by step instructions.
D.It is intended for AI professionals.
30.What does Campbell urge people to do regarding AI development
A.Observe existing regulations on it.
B.Reconsider expert opinions about it.
C.Make joint efforts to keep it under control.
D.Learn from prior experience to slow it down.
31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A.To recommend a book on AI.
B.To give a brief account of AI history.
C.To clarify the definition of AI.
D.To honor an outstanding AI expert.
D
A team at the University of California, Los Angeles developed a human like robot that will take part in an international soccer competition. The name of the robot is ARTEMIS, which stands for Advanced Robotic Technology for Enhanced Mobility and Improved Stability. It stands 142 centimetres tall and weighs 38 kilogrammes.
The researchers said ARTEMIS is one of only a few humanoid robots that can run. It can also jump and walk on different kinds of surfaces without losing its balance. The robot also can kick a ball and remain standing even when kicked or hit. The engineers who built the robot said it can walk at a speed of 2.1 metres per second. This could make ARTEMIS the world's fastest walking humanoid robot.
The team said the goal of the project was to create a robot that can perform many human like activities, particularly playing the sport of soccer. To do this, engineers said they modeled the devices that control the robot after human muscles. ARTEMIS uses a series of sensors and cameras to help it move and position itself.
Dennis Hong is a UCLA professor of engineering and the director of the university's Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory. He explained in a statement the reason ARTEMIS can keep good balance even when walking and running over uneven surfaces. It is because the robot is “getting both feet off the ground while in motion,” Hong said. He added, “This is a first of its kind robot.” Another difference between ARTEMIS and other humanoid robots is that it is controlled electrically instead of by hydraulics (水力学). The developers said this makes the robot quieter and cleaner running. Over the next few weeks, they will work on perfecting the robot's soccer playing skills.
One member of the team, student Justin Quan, said his personal goal is engineering robots that can improve people's lives. “Seeing these robots helping push the robot technology to that next level is really rewarding because you're like, oh, the dream, it gets closer,” he said.
32.What does the underlined word “humanoid” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Human like. B.All round.
C.Automatic. D.Custom designed.
33.What makes it possible for ARTEMIS to play soccer
A.It never loses balance.
B.It can move flexibly for ever.
C.It has powerful sensory functions.
D.Its design is patterned on the human muscles.
34.What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 4
A.The way that ARTEMIS maintains balance in motion.
B.The using method and advantages of ARTEMIS.
C.The most advanced technology applied to ARTEMIS.
D.The distinctive features and working principle of ARTEMIS.
35.What's Justin Quan's attitude to the future of the latest robots
A.Critical. B.Hopeful.
C.Concerned. D.Uninterested.

The man who could see the future
The ability to predict the future is a rare talent. American author Isaac Asimov (19201992), one of the great science fiction writers of his age, had such a talent. __36__ Now that we're here, let's see what he got right.
__37__ Asimov thought computers would cause a revolution comparable to the industrial revolution of the 19th century. Specifically, he said that “mobile computerized objects” would be an important part of everyday life. Here, he clearly predicted our world of smartphones, tables and other devices. He also had a great deal to say about space exploration. __38__ How did Asimov develop his special sense of future developments __39__ He read the newspapers and magazines sold in his parents' candy store.

__40__ Asimov had his finger on the pulse (脉搏) of both scientific and social change. He had a clear vision of what was coming around the corner for humanity in his works like the Galactic Empire series (《银河帝国系列》). “His predictions are absolutely fascinating,” Calum Chase, an English writer, told BBC News. “He was a genius.”
A.As a smart boy, Asimov taught himself to read at the age of five.
B.Space exploration really can make our life more convenient and comfortable.
C.Back in 1983, he was asked to predict what the world would look like in 2019.
D.On the role that computing would play in the future, he was amazingly accurate.
E.Asimov has developed a great interest in computer programming since childhood.
F.As an author, his books would feature the theme of social change caused by technology.
G.The International Space Station proves his prediction that we would not simply visit space but seek to stay there.

A Writing Assignment
Mrs Peabody, the English teacher, gave the class a writing assignment. “Write something in some way related to summer vacation,” she said. “Be as creative as you can. But,” the teacher added, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
That night Jim sat at his desk at home and stared at a blank sheet of paper. He didn't want to write about his summer vacation as usual. What could he write about, except a dog, a water park and two weeks of camp Boring ... He'd actually been happy to get back to school.
So he wrote what he wanted. Not an essay at all but a short story, science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn't have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn't have vacations either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 hours a day. They wished they had vacations.
The next morning he handed in the story, but later that night he lay awake until 3 am, thinking, “Why did I do that Will Mrs Peabody think I ignored the assignment?” English was his favorite class. Maybe he would beg Mrs Peabody for a chance to write another one, the sort she wanted.
But when he got to class the following day, it turned out that Mrs Peabody had already read and graded the essays.
The teacher said, “I'm going to pass back your summer vacation writings in a minute. I'm afraid I've got some rather harsh words to say. Almost everyone in class simply wrote an essay about his or her summer vacation ... Almost everyone.”
“This is bad,” Jim thought. “I'm getting an F. I know it ...”
“But,” the teacher continued, “one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin was the only one who got an A on the assignment.”
Jim couldn't believe his ears.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
When Mrs Peabody invited Jim to share some thoughts on his writing, other students were all looking at him expectantly. Mrs Peabody thought it was time to explain Jim's grade.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
When Mrs Peabody invited Jim to share some thoughts on his writing, other students were all looking at him expectantly. Mrs Peabody thought it was time to explain Jim's grade.

[精彩范文]
When Mrs Peabody invited Jim to share some thoughts on his writing, other students were all looking at him expectantly. Jim, feeling both surprised and nervous, slowly made his way to the front of the classroom. Clearing his throat, he began, “Well, I guess I just wanted to write something different. You know, everyone else would be writing about their beach trips or family vacations, and I thought, ‘Why not create a whole new world?’” He paused and then continued, “On this planet, they don't have summer or vacations, and I kind of felt sorry for the aliens there. It made me appreciate our summers even more.”
Mrs Peabody thought it was time to explain Jim's grade. She stood up and addressed the class. “Class, Jim stretched his imagination and took a risk. That's precisely what I was hoping. Creativity and originality are qualities that are often overlooked in favor of conformity. His work reminds us all that writing is not just about meeting expectations—it's about exploring the boundaries of your imagination. That's why Jim earned an A.” The class erupted into applause, and Jim, standing tall, felt a surge of pride and newfound confidence in his own creativity.

The circumstances led Anderson—who’s 58—to become an Uber driver to make some extra money that also allowed him to interact with all kinds of people. People like Skinner, who luckily enough, was able to help his family. If there is such a thing as fate, the pair’s meeting was a welcome chance encounter.

In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable.

Dennis Hong is a UCLA professor of engineering and the director of the university’s Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory. Over the next few weeks, they will work on perfecting the robot’s soccer playing skills.
One member of the team, student Justin Quan, said his personal goal is engineering robots that can improve people’s lives. “Seeing these robots helping push the robot technology to that next level is really rewarding because you’re like, oh, the dream, it gets closer,” he said.

The man who could see the future
The ability to predict the future is a rare talent. American author Isaac Asimov (1920 1992), one of the great science fiction writers of his age, had such a talent. __36__ Now that we’re here, let’s see what he got right.
__37__ Asimov thought computers would cause a revolution comparable to the industrial revolution of the 19th century. He also had a great deal to say about space exploration. __38__ How did Asimov develop his special sense of future developments __39__ He read the newspapers and magazines sold in his parents’ candy store.
His scientific interest gained sharper focus at Columbia University in New York. Asimov went to study chemistry, but became bored with pure laboratory science. Instead, he thought hard about the social implications of science. He wanted to communicate his ideas to the public.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
