Brody Ridder attends the Academy Charter School in Westminster, Colorado. When he got his yearbook(学校年刊), he went up to people and asked them to sign his yearbook, but most of them refused. He collected only two or three names from classmates and two notes from his teachers. So, Brody wrote a yearbook note to himself, “Hope you make more friends.”
Reading that note broke his mother's heart. She took a photo of the note and posted it to a Facebook group for parents at the school. The post made its way to three high-schoolers: Simone Lightfoot, Logan South and Joanna Cooper. They spent hours discussing the problem and finding ways to help. “It's so fun to have everyone sign the yearbook, but for this kid few people have signed their names in his yearbook. It's just heartbreaking,” Lightfoot said. They all started planning that the next day they were going to sign this kid's yearbook.
The three rounded up as many students as possible to sign Brody's yearbook even though none of them had ever met the three high-schoolers. According to the teens, people were lining up waiting to fill in the blanks in Brody's yearbook. Many of the more than 100 signatures included words of encouragement, advice and even phone numbers below. And then right after that, all the other classmates signed Brody's yearbook.
The teens said they hoped that the small friendly act could encourage other kids to be kind. “It makes me feel better now. I don't know how to explain it. It makes me feel better from the bottom of my heart,” Brody said. “It makes me feel like there's hope for the school, there's hope for humanity and there're a lot of good kids in this world,” his mother said.
24.Why did Brody write “Hope you make more friends.” in his yearbook?
A.He hoped to know more about newcomers.
B.He planned to get another yearbook from others.
C.He decided to give up signing the yearbook.
D.He wished more people to sign his yearbook.
25.How did the three high-schoolers learn about Brody's story?
A.From their teachers. B.From the Internet.
C.From the newspaper. D.From their classmates.

A.People lined up waiting to give yearbooks to Brody.

D.Many students asked to meet the three high-schoolers.
27.Which word can best describe the three high-schoolers?

Saodat Sadikova is an English teacher in Jizzakh, Uzbekistan. As a young girl, she dreamed of becoming a flight attendant(空乘人员) and traveling around the world, so she learned at least three languages. Although she was not able to become a flight attendant, Sadikova could speak Uzbek, Russian, English and Turkish. Sadikova has never traveled abroad but reports feeling connected with people around the world.
American Trina Bright worked in education for nearly 25 years and she traveled to many countries, including China and South Africa. Bright used stories from her travels to help her students in the U.S. understand their place in the world and see value in their own cultures. But Bright, unlike Sadikova, does not report feeling connected with people around the world.
Bright is not alone. The Pew Research Center recently asked people in 24 countries a series of questions about how connected they feel with the world to see how travel experience relates to feelings of connectedness.?
The study found that respondents(调查对象) who had traveled to at least one other country felt more connected with people around the world. 99 percent of respondents in the Netherlands reported having visited at least one other country and 77 percent of respondents in the Netherlands said they felt at least somewhat close to people all over the world. But international travel does not always mean a person feels close to people around the world. 99 percent of Swedish respondents said they had visited at least one other country. Yet a much smaller number of Swedish respondents—47 percent—reported feeling close to people all over the world.
Sadikova said she felt connected with the world because of the media, which makes it quite easy to get to know events and news.
28.What was Saodat Sadikova's dream when she was young?
A.To be a teacher. B.To be a dancer.
C.To be a singer. D.To be a flight attendant.
29.What does the underlined part “Bright is not alone.” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Bright has many friends.
B.Others are in the same situation as Bright.
C.Others often experience loneliness too.
D.Bright feels close to people around the world.
30.What can we learn from the study?
A.Traveling is the most useful way to know people.
B.The Netherlanders travel the most among all the respondents.
C.Traveling abroad may make people feel connected with others.
D.International travel always makes people feel close to people.
31.How does Sadikova get connected with the world?
A.Through the media. B.Through books.
C.Through teaching. D.Through traveling.
D
If you are like most English learners, you may be familiar with this: You think you understand a topic, yet when asked to use what you have learned, you are not able to remember the information. Not being able to retrieve(检索) new ideas could happen on a test or even in a conversation.
Sarah Lynn, an educational consultant and teacher, thinks English learners can improve their ability to remember and use new words by testing themselves. She adds that self-testing helps retrieval—the ability to remember and use new words.
Lynn is not the only expert who recommends self-testing. A paper in Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition says one benefit of testing practice is that it improves the retrieval ability. Retrieving information once makes retrieving that information easier in the future. In addition, the paper says when students test themselves as part of studying, they learn what they do not know. When students know what they do not understand, they can pay attention to overcoming their weaknesses. Lynn recommends that learners test themselves by getting away from what they are studying. Then, they should test themselves by thinking about what they have learned. She recommends that learners make themselves write or speak something. Lynn suggests reading something or watching a video on the topic, then getting rid of the reading or video material and summarizing it. This will allow learners to test what they know.
Next time you are studying English, try to test yourself. But do not just assume that you can read something once or twice and fully understand it. Even if you highlight important points or take notes in the class, you probably do not fully understand what you have learned. After all, Olympic athletes cannot learn how to swim or run just from reading a book. They have to practice swimming or running every day for years. They often compete in races to test their skills.
32.What's the common situation faced by English learners?
A.They fail to come up with new ideas.
B.They are not familiar with a certain topic.
C.They don't learn as well as they think.
D.They don't know how to improve their test-taking skills.
33.Which is the advice given by Lynn about self-testing?
A.Recall what's learned with the book closed.
B.Remember what's learned by reciting repetitively.
C.Question your teachers on what you doubt bravely.
D.Challenge yourself to learn from videos.
34.Why are Olympic athletes mentioned?
A.To show how to be successful athletes.
B.To make people confident of learning.
C.To warn English learners not to be proud.
D.To stress the importance of practice.
35.What's the best title for the passage?
A.What is self-testing?
B.Memorize more new words
C.Improve English by self-testing
D.Learning actually takes effort most

Advice for High School Students
As a person who is graduating from high school very soon, I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students. 36 I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me. ?
Do not be too quick to judge. 37 Don't dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that. Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance. ?
Don't try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you. Don't spend any energy trying to please others who will never like you. 38 ?
Have respect for authorities. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. 39 Don't argue with them and just obey them. ?
Realise high school is not the real world. 40 It is a free society where people take responsibility for their actions. What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn't working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.?
A.It is a huge waste of time.
B.So just learn to say “No” a lot.
C.Do not value first impressions highly.
D.The real world isn't a closed environment.
E.Many of these are based on regrets that I have.
F.Listen to their advice and consider it carefully.
G.Bad habits are hard to break and remain with you for a long time.

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, and of course a cake with 16 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned 16 and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You're welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we got you this not only because you turned sixteen, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
“Of course, I will,” I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I started showing off my phone and asking everyone for their numbers. It was cool that I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in the classroom anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn't get caught using it.
I was pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign(签字) the test paper.
It was hard to show my mom the test paper. She was used to seeing A's and B's on my test papers. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.

根据第三段的“Lynn recommends that learners...what they have learned.” 故选A。

53.B 根据空后的“we are provided with food”并结合上文的“after he dried the tears”可知,男人得到食物后哭了,说明他很感动,所以此处表示感激(grateful)。故选B。
54.D 根据空后的“Please go to that center as well.”

One possible version:
Dear fellow students,?
I'm Li Hua, president of the Student Union. I have found that many students spend very little time on physical exercise due to the heavy burden of schoolwork. Now, it's time to fit exercise into our busy schedule.?
It is universally recognized that exercise is of great importance to physical and mental health. Besides, taking regular exercise improves our concentration and reduces academic stress. To encourage everyone to live a more active life, I recommend jogging and skipping rope, which are cost-effective ways to strengthen endurance and maintain a healthy weight.
Come on! Let's make exercise our life habit!
The Student Union?
第二节
One possible version:
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said it was like I was in my own little world all day, playing with my phone instead of communicating with them. They regretted having given me a phone, which made me not concentrate on study any more. Anyway, they signed the paper at last and I began to reflect on what I had done in those days.
The next morning, I went to the teacher's office. I told the teacher I realized that I was wrong and that I would learn to use my phone correctly. My teacher smiled at me gently and said, “The mobile phone is useful, but you should not let it take you away from the rest of the world. As a student, you have the responsibility to focus your attention on useful things”. I nodded my head with tears running down my face. I promised her that I would make progress in the future. A month later, I was wild with joy when I took first place in the monthly test. I felt proud of myself for making the right choice.
