二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共2小题,共16分)
[8分]An alarming phenomenon has sprung up over the past few years: Many students are arriving at college unprepared to read entire books. Many students are overwhelmed at the thought of reading multiple books a semester. They shut down when they’re faced with ideas they don’t understand.
Why is this happening The attraction of smartphones and social media came up, and it appears that many middle and high schools are teaching fewer full books. But one possible cause that I nod to is a change in values, not ability. The problem does not appear to be that “kids these days” are incurious or uninterested in reading. Instead, young people might be responding to a cultural message: Books just aren’t that important.
I once spoke with 33 professors at some top universities, who didn’t think their students were lazy. It is not unusual that their students’ schedules are crowded with activities that are less about personal development and more relevant to future employment. “There are too many demands on their time to devote themselves fully to works of literature that might take 20 hours to consume,” said James Shapiro, an English professor at Columbia.
In 1971, 37% students said that a core objective of their college years was to become well-off financially. 73% said it was to develop a meaningful philosophy of life. By 2015, those numbers had almost reversed(颠倒). Experts and parents alike have emphasized preprofessional courses but downplayed the importance of humanistic study.
However society changes, there is no denying that reading is of significance. If we’ve shifted what we hold in esteem(推崇), it is reasonable that we could, as a society, shift back. The responsibility doesn’t lie only with Generation Z. Everyone who’s upset about the change has a role to play in reversing it.
4.(2分)According to the author, what is the cause of the phenomenon
A.Many distractions from digital devices.
B.Inadequate preparations for college life.
C.A misguided belief in reading full books.
D.Disqualifications of secondary school teachers.
5.(2分)What can be inferred from James Shapiro’s words
A.Schools should offer time management courses.
B.Students are occupied with their works of literature.
C.Reading literary pieces is beyond students’ available time.
D.Professors believe employment is more related to personal growth.
6.(2分)What does the underlined word “downplayed” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Highlighted.
B.Underestimated.
C.Recognized.
D.Misunderstood.
7.(2分)What is the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph
A.To restate an opinion.
B.To stir up a debate.
C.To issue an announcement.
D.To put forward a proposal.
[8分]Research on the effects of age on language learning often leads to conclusion that it’s impossible to learn a language after the age of 18, yet there’s no scientific proof for this saying. While certain language processing works best during childhood, others may even experience a new growth between the ages of 50 and 75.
The definition of language learning and its goals also play an important role. If the aim is to talk easily in daily social situations, research suggests that fluency in a new language can be achieved at any age with enough study.
Learning a language at different stages of life comes with advantages and disadvantages. If you start before 10, you may be able to get a native - like accent. But if you start teaching a second language to a child late in their speaking development, there maybe challenges.
Between the ages of 10 and 18, there is a special chance to understand grammar and develop an understanding of a new language’s rules. Language learning during this period can also make you more confident and encourage a positive attitude towards language changes.
When you study another language in adulthood, you may do more translation and think in your native language first. You may also feel nervous and be slow to speak. But adults have good advantages too. They have great communication skills, know more about literature, and understand society and culture better.
Learning a new language at the age of 50 and above may be easier because some of their mental skills keep getting better until they are in their mid-to-late 70s. This age group can quickly learn the basics of a language, although more research is needed to be sure.
In summary, while some things may become harder with age, there is no age limit for language learning. Even if you make some mistakes, reaching an intermediate level in a language can be good. Starting early can improve your pronunciation and grammar. But using the language all your life is very important if you want to speak it well. Ultimately, it’s never too late to start or relearn a language.
8.(2分)In which situation can one achieve fluency in a new language at any age
A.In grammar class. B.In writing practice.
C.In vocabulary research. D.In everyday communication.
9.(2分)Which of the following can we learn about language learning
A.Early learning delays children’s language development.
B.Learning during teenage years helps build up confidence.
C.Learners beyond fifty can get knowledge quickly.
D.Learning in adulthood helps to study translation skills.
10.(2分)Which of the statements might agree with the conclusion mentioned about language learning
A.Starting early may cause challenges.
B.There is no age limit for successful language learning.
C.Only born learners can achieve fluency in a new language.
D.Mistakes in language learning are unacceptable for progress.
11.(2分)What’s the best title for the text

三、阅读单选(5题)(本大题共1小题,共10分)
[10分]If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar(不熟悉) words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve quickly, and you can be a fluent English speaker one day.

The population of monarchs passing the winter in Mexico appears to have fallen. Now, the good news for Illinois’ state insects: The Field Museum in Chicago is trying to figure out what makes a successful monarch garden in the city, and it’s proper to start preparing for this summer.
The Field Museum project involves citizens reporting on spaces that researchers can’t walk into every day, like backyards. Participants sent in weekly reports, including the makeup of their garden, and development of eggs and caterpillars. The more successful gardens had more milkweed(乳汁草)and blooming plants, multiple milkweed species, and tended to be larger plots. But Klinger, an expert at the Field Museum, said one participant with a single plant watched eggs transform all the way to chrysalises(蛹). So,she said,“You just need one plant.”
In 2020,during the second season of the study, the number of caterpillars dropped even though the number of participants in the study more than doubled.
Chicago saw a hot, dry summer——its warmest on record, and Klinger said that may have affected the health of the milkweed plants. The reports out of Mexico noted this season’s eastern population drop followed an increase in forest loss, which was 4 times what it was a year ago, primarily from illegal tree cutting, as well as trees hit by wind and drought. But they also said spring and summer weather conditions were tough for milkweed blossoms and egg development in the southern US, which is largely responsible for limiting reproduction.
“But now is the optimum time to start planning to plant some milkweed. The best thing to do is what you can do. One milkweed plant in a pot on your balcony(阳台)is doing something,” Klinger said.
【小题31】What’s the intention of the Field Museum project

55.[20分]阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I, an art teacher from New York, have always been drawn to traditional Chinese crafts. Last summer, I traveled to Weifang, a small city in Shandong Province noted as the “Kite Capital of the World.” The exquisite (精美的) kites of Weifang left me completely amazed. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by a breathtaking sight: people crafting kites everywhere, and hundreds of colorful kites soaring gracefully in the sky. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and excitement as both locals and tourists gathered to celebrate the annual International Kite Festival.
I spent several days exploring the festival, marveling (大为赞叹) at the complicated designs of the kites. Some were shaped like impressive dragons, their long bodies twisting and turning in the air. Others resembled delicate butterflies, their wings decorated with brilliant patterns that seemed to come alive against the blue sky. I couldn’t resist purchasing several kites to bring back home, each one a true masterpiece of craftsmanship.
When I returned to my classroom in New York, I eagerly shared the kites with my students. Their eyes widened with wonder as they examined the delicate bamboo frames and the hand-painted rice paper. “They’re so beautiful!” one student exclaimed (惊呼), holding up a butterfly-shaped kite. Another student, fascinated by a dragon kite, asked, “How do they make these They look so light, yet they fly so gracefully.”
Inspired by their enthusiasm, I decided to teach them how to make their own kites. We started with simple designs, using lightweight materials like bamboo sticks and tissue paper. However, despite our best efforts, the kites we crafted never flew as well as the ones from Weifang. Some would lose their balance, while others barely managed to lift off the ground. The students grew disheartened, and so did I. “Why can’t ours fly like the Chinese kites ” one student asked, her voice tinged with (略带) disappointment. Their words made me realize that making a kite wasn’t just about assembling (组装) materials; it required a profound (深刻的) understanding of balance, precision, and the art of aerodynamics (空气动力学). “Why not seek guidance from the people of the ‘Kite Capital of the World’ They must be experts in kite-making,” I thought to myself.

参考答案
一、阅读单选(3题)
【知识点】学校生活、应用文、情节发展、细节理解
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.C
【分析】这是一篇应用文。主要介绍了德雷塞尔大学工程学院为期三周的暑期导师项目。
【解析】1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“For all prospective engineers, the 3-week Summer Mentorship Program at Drexel University’s College of Engineering is a perfect match. The students will have the opportunity to live in a beautiful dorm at Caneris Hall right across the street from Drexel’s Engineering buildings.(对于所有未来的工程师来说,德雷塞尔大学工程学院为期三周的暑期导师项目是一个完美的选择。学生们将有机会住在德雷克塞尔大学工程大楼对面的Caneris Hall漂亮的宿舍里。)”可知,这个为期三周的暑期指导项目是为未来成为工程师们的学生准备的,也就是工程专业的学生。故选B项。
2.细节理解题。根据文中“What the students will do”部分的内容“In the day time from 9 am to 5 pm, students will work in an assigned laboratory in a specific area of engineering. They will work by themselves or in groups of 2 or 3 students on a research project with a graduate assistant.(在白天的时间从上午9点到下午5点,学生将在指定的实验室在一个特定的工程领域工作。他们将自己或2-3名学生组成小组,在研究生助理的帮助下完成一个研究项目。)”可知,学生们在上午9点到下午5点的时间里,会在指定的工程领域实验室里,独自或两三人一组与研究生助理一起进行一个研究项目。所以学生参加这个项目时需要进行研究。故选A项。
3.推理判断题。根据文章“The life during the program”部分的内容“However, at night and on weekends, there will be nonstop fun and entertainment. Everyday will be full of fun activities such as Atlantic City, Dorney Park and Hard Rock Cafe.(然而,在晚上和周末,将有不间断的乐趣和娱乐。每天都有很多有趣的活动,比如大西洋城、多尼公园和硬石咖啡馆。)”以及 “There will be a lot of free time to explore the busy and great city of Philadelphia on free nights once a week.(每周有一次的免费之夜,你会有很多空闲时间去探索繁忙而伟大的费城。)”
根据文章第二段的“The attraction of smartphones and social media came up, and it appears that many middle and high schools are teaching fewer full books. But one possible cause that I nod to is a change in values, not ability. The problem does not appear to be that ‘kids these days’ are incurious or uninterested in reading. Instead, young people might be responding to a cultural message: Books just aren’t that important.(智能手机和社交媒体的吸引力出现了,似乎许多中学和高中教授的完整书籍越来越少。但我赞同的一个可能原因是价值观的改变,而不是能力的改变。问题似乎并不在于“现在的孩子”对阅读没有兴趣或不感兴趣。相反,年轻人可能是在回应一个文化信息:书籍并不那么重要。)”可知,作者认为年轻人对于读书有着错误的看法,即书籍并没有那么重要。故选C。
5.推理判断题。根据文章第三段的“There are too many demands on their time to devote themselves fully to works of literature that might take 20 hours to consume(他们的时间要求太多,无法全身心投入到可能需要20个小时才能完成的文学作品中)”可知,James Shapiro认为学生没有时间阅读文学作品。故选C。
6.词义猜测题。根据文章画线单词所在句“Experts and parents alike have emphasized preprofessional courses but downplayed the importance of humanistic study.(专家和家长们都强调了职业预修课程,但downplayed人文研究的重要性。)”可知,专家和家长都强调了职业预修课程的重要性。句中but表示转折关系,说明前后情况相反。前面提到“emphasized preprofessional courses(强调职业预修课程)”,那么后面对于“the importance of humanistic study(人文研究的重要性)”应该是与之相反的态度,即没有给予足够重视。选项B“Underestimated”意为“低估、轻视”,与此相符。故选B。
7.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“However society changes, there is no denying that reading is of significance. If we’ve shifted what we hold in esteem(推崇), it is reasonable that we could, as a society, shift back. The responsibility doesn’t lie only with Generation Z. Everyone who’s upset about the change has a role to play in reversing it.(无论社会如何变化,不可否认的是,阅读具有重要意义。

根据第四段“Between the ages of 10 and 18, there is a special chance to understand grammar and develop an understanding of a new language’s rules. Language learning during this period can also make you more confident and encourage a positive attitude towards language changes. (在10到18岁之间,有一个特殊的机会来理解语法和发展对一门新语言规则的理解。在这段时间学习语言也可以让你更自信,并鼓励你对语言变化持积极的态度。)”可知,在青少年时期学习语言有助于建立自信。故选B项。
10.细节理解题。根据最后一段的句子“In summary, while some things may become harder with age, there is no age limit for language learning. (总之,随着年龄的增长,有些事情可能会变得越来越难,但语言学习没有年龄限制。)”可知,成功的语言学习没有年龄限制。故选B项。
11.主旨大意题。根据最后一段的句子“In summary, while some things may become harder with age, there is no age limit for language learning. 【知识点】学校生活、方法和策略、说明文
【答案】
37.F
38.G
39.A
40.C
41.D
【详解】
〖导语〗这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了在校期间会面临很多的挑战,同伴指导是解决问题的最有效的方式之一。文章从四方面解释了同伴指导是如何帮助我们解决问题的;
37.根据上文“At this time, peer tutoring (同伴指导) is one of the most helpful tools. Peer tutors are understanding, helpful and especially honest. (此时,同伴辅导是最有用的工具之一。同伴导师理解、乐于助人,特别诚实)”可知,前文讲到在校期间会面临很多的挑战,同伴指导是解决问题的最有效的方式之一,所以空处对同伴辅导的好处进一步说明。F项“他们总是在那里帮助你度过难关。”符合语境。F项中的they指代前文中的peer tutors。故选F;
38.根据下文“They tell the truth about you, which may put you in an awkward position. But you have to learn to accept you’re not perfect and will make mistakes. (他们告诉你真相,这可能会让你陷入尴尬的境地。但你必须学会接受自己并不完美,会犯错误)”可知,同伴指导会让我们认识到自己的不完美,自己也会犯错误。所以空处表明我们在承认自己犯错误的时候可能很尴尬,但是他们一定会诚实地告知我们这一点,让我们学会去承认自己的不完美。G项“他们确保这一点的唯一方法是对你完全诚实。”符合语境。故选G;
39.根据下文“ If a tutor teaches you how to solve a math problem in a way that makes sense to you, but is also different from what you have learned in class, you will have to use that method because it works for you. If a tutor revises your paper and gives you advice, you will find your work in the future to change completely. Change is good. It is by no means something to be afraid of. (如果一位导师教你如何用一种对你有意义的方式解决一道数学题,但又与你在课堂上学到的不同,你就必须使用这种方法,因为它对你有效。如果一位导师修改你的论文并给你建议,你会发现你的工作在未来会完全改变。改变是好的。这绝不是什么可怕的事情)”可知,本段主要说明如果同伴给我们的建议是有用的,那我们一定要改变自己,去接纳他们的意见。A项“给你一个改变的机会。”适合作本段的主旨大意句。文中的“Change”是标题中“Change”的复现。故选A;
40.根据上文“Since we are human, it’s not unusual for us to be lazy sometimes. (既然我们是人,我们有时懒惰并不罕见)”以及下文“However, if a tutor notices that you have been inactive, don’t be surprised if they call you out on it. (然而,如果一位导师注意到你一直不活跃,如果他们叫你出来,不要感到惊讶)”可知,空处需要顺接前面的表述,即我们每个人都有懒惰的时间,也要承接下文,表明我们也需要克服这个问题。C项“当然,这没什么好羞愧的。”符合语境,能够承上启下。C项中的this指代前文懒惰这件事。故选C;
41.根据上文“Once you practice peer tutoring at school, you will notice a great change in your grades and your learning ability. (一旦你在学校里练习了同伴辅导,你就会发现你的成绩和学习能力发生了很大的变化)”可知,同伴指导帮助我们解决了学习中的很多问题。所以空处需要表明同伴指导是有效的。D项“所以我认为这真的值得你的努力。”符合语境,为前一句表述的结果。故选D。

55.【答案】One possible version:
Eventually I decided to post our kite-making struggles on a Chinese website. To my surprise, within hours, I received lots of responses from Weifang kite masters offering detailed advice. One kind craftsman even sent step-by-step video courses, demonstrating how to properly bend bamboo frames and adjust string tension for perfect flight. My students and I watched in awe as he made delicate adjustments with practiced ease. “It’s all about the balance between weight and wind resistance,” he explained through translation. We carefully noted every tip and redesigned our kites accordingly.
On a clear, windy day, my students and I took our newly-made kites to a nearby park. Holding our breath, we released them into the sky. This time, the kites flew easily, dancing among the clouds just like the ones in Weifang. The students cheered as their colorful creations fluttered higher and higher. A passing jogger stopped to admire the scene, remarking, “Those look like professional kites!” Beaming with pride, one student turned to me and said, “Now we understand — it’s not just making a kite, it’s creating art that flies.” Watching their joy, I realized our project had become more than a craft lesson; it was a bridge connecting cultures through shared wonder and perseverance.
