The UR (University of Rochester) Libraries’event, “Find it For Free”, held on January 21, provided students with information on finding low-to-no-cost course materials. Librarian Eloise Stevens highlighted the financial burden textbooks place on students and the need for resources they might need. The event introduced three main options for accessing affordable course materials:
Course Reserves: Materials placed on course reserve can be checked out for a short period, typically two hours. This system allows students in specific classes to borrow materials, but if materials aren’t registered, students may experience difficulties accessing them. Professors must submit physical materials to the library first.
UR and Public Libraries: Students can search for additional materials in the DiscoverUR catalog. While some e-books in the UR Library have unlimited access, others have usage restrictions. Students can also use digital library cards for the New York Public Library and Monroe County Library, which offer e-books and audiobooks through Libby, providing another valuable resource for course materials.
Open Web Sources: Several open web platforms offer access to course materials, including the Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg, and Hathi Trust Digital Library. These resources are particularly useful for materials published before 1929, which will no longer be protected by copyright in 2025, and for some more recent academic works.
Students can find a guide to these options on the library’s website and reach out to subject librarians for further assistance.
21. Why was the event “Find it For Free” started
A. To help students save money.
B. To teach academic research skills.
C. To advertise public library services.
D. To encourage students to donate books.
22. What is a must before students can access Course Reserves materials
A. Students present a valid student ID.
B. Students register two hours ahead.
C. Professors hand the paper materials first.
D. The materials are made available electronically.
23. What makes Open Web Sources unique
A. They lend mainly physical materials.
B. They are based at university libraries.
C. They offer copyright-free older works.
D. They are specially designed for college students.

We just got back from a weeklong trip through New Mexico where we traveled through desert landscapes, hiked up mountains, and walked through dry creek beds. We experienced nature and wildlife that was vastly distinct from what I’ve seen before.
We’ve lived in Atlanta for 25 years so it was quite a change from our “city in a forest”. My husband and I were joined by our adult son who now lives in San Diego and is a little more familiar with the west. We like to visit national parks and explore interesting ecosystems.
In New Mexico, everything seemed striking and amazing. Starting in Albuquerque, we took a tram up the Sandia Peak in the Sandia Mountains, where we had fantastic views as we watched parasailers float off into the unending sky. We then drove to Abiquiu, the town where artist Georgia O’Keeffe was so inspired. We stayed at a lovely home pretty much in the middle of nowhere. First, we noticed the breathtaking setting. Then we noticed the ants: billions of tiny ants were marching all over the outside of the property. They were carrying off a few of the native bees that had fallen to the ground near the house.
Once we were awakened in the middle of the night by howling that was both strange and musical. We were told about the coyotes (郊狼) that share the area, so we weren’t surprised when we woke up the next morning to some pretty impressive pawprints right outside the back door. On our final morning hike before heading south in the state, we even spotted a large snake curled up on the path, enjoying the warm morning sun. We stayed far out of its way but certainly watched our steps a little more carefully.
We talked about sustainability throughout the trip. In the past several decades, there’s been so much noticeable change in our travel adventures. That will be great to keep the skies cleaner and save energy. And the coyotes and snakes can be left to dance and enjoy in peace.
24. What can be inferred about the family’s travel preferences
A. They prefer city life over nature.
B. They love places with artistic heritage.
C. They like to visit familiar places.
D. They seek diverse natural settings.
25. What do the wildlife encounters suggest about the local environment
A. It is dangerous for visitors.
B. It is little changed by humans.
C. It lacks diverse animal species.
D. It is mainly a desert habitat.
26. What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph
A. It’s beneficial for us to take an adventure tour.
B. Travel should be safer and more comfortable.
C. It’s necessary to boost sustainable tourism.
D. Wildlife is adapting to changes.
27. What is the best title for this passage
A. Exploring New Mexico’s Wild Beauty.
B. Wildlife Encounters in New Mexico.
C. A Family Trip to Atlanta.
D. The Challenges of Desert Travel.

Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job This is a question that many people think about these days. At present, the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain.
Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. Robots, for example, are believed to develop emotional intelligence sometime, which enables them to recognize, understand and express emotions in a way that is similar to humans, but we must avoid AI copying human emotions. Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster.
The AI-driven new industrial revolution is inexorable. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. But it always turned out humanity was able to adapt to each industrial revolution and create new forms of employment. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.
28. Why are some people worried about AI
A. It has pushed humans’ boundaries.
B. It has led to social problems.
C. It may outsmart humans ultimately.
D. It may cause human intelligence decline.
29. How can we prevent AI’s potential threat
A. By stirring emotions.
B. By setting laws and regulations.
C. By blocking functions.
D. By changing regulations.
30. What does the underlined word “inexorable” in the last paragraph mean
A. Undesirable. B. Unbelievable.
C. Unpredictable. D. Unavoidable.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward AI’s advance
A. Favorable. B. Cautious.
C. Worried. D. Objective.
D
Look! A polar bear is lying lifeless on a beach. On the shore, in the background, stand three guards, talking to each other. One of them has a weapon hanging casually on his shoulder. This powerful image has thrown into question the motivation for this kind of tourism, or ecotourism. Does our proximity (接近) to large animals in the wild, frequently fueled by a desire for sensational images, lead to such animals becoming accustomed to human contact If that is the case, surely the losing side will end up paying the ultimate price for such proximity.
To my sorrow, I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and indeed stood two weeks ago on the very beach where the bear was shot. The bear’s death should never have happened. Was the beach examined from the ship offshore beforehand Was there access to flares (照明弹) to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly These are standard measures for any respected operator. The incident is probably the result of a terrible systemic failure.
Nevertheless, the incident should not negate the value of ecotourism. In its best form, this kind of travel has very little impact, or indeed has a positive effect, on the environment where it takes place. This can be by making financial donations to conservation groups, providing income to local communities, or ensuring protection of certain areas or animals. In Svalbard, visitors become ambassadors for the endangered polar bear, increasing awareness of the fact that the far greater danger facing them is sea-ice melt in the Arctic Ocean.
Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates. Simply closing off these regions is not the answer.
32. Why did the polar bear die
A. It was probably hunted for its fur.
B. It was accidentally killed by flares.
C. Standard safety procedures were not followed.
D. The beach lacked safety devices.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Positive ecotourism. B. Financial donations.
C. Rising awareness about danger. D. Creation of jobs for locals.
34. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest
A. The guards failed to prevent problems.
B. Better methods for conducting ecotourism are needed.
C. Ecotourism clearly benefits the environment.
D. Safety measures are weak.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To cause readers to focus on polar bears.
B. To encourage readers to reflect on ecotourism.
C. To stress side effects that ecotourism has caused.
D. To analyze why the polar bear was killed.

第二节 (满分 25 分)

The other day, I was driving home, a little upset because I hated working at the weekend. On the way, I decided to grab some veggies in the nearby greengrocer’s. Since there was still thin ice on the road,I took a glance at the rear mirror (后视镜) to make sure no pedestrians or vehicles came close, and slowly steered the wheel to the right. Then unexpectedly my car bumped into an electric bike, giving out a harsh metallic clash. I collected myself and saw out of the window screen a boy lean on one side of the bike, one foot off the ground.
All of a sudden,a familiar scene flashed across my mind.
When I was in high school, I had fun riding my bike along the country road on hot and boring afternoons during summer holidays. Sometimes I carried my little brother to the only grocery store in the neighborhood where we could buy our favorite ice cream. Once we had an argument about what to buy. Seeing him leave the store in a temper, I jumped on the bike and tried to talk him into going back. Suddenly, he gave me a push and I leaned towards the middle of the road when a motorbike came in my face. I fell on the ground before I could see anything clearly. Luckily, I didn’t get hurt but still couldn’t rise to my feet. The motorist, a middle-aged man, ignoring his torn jeans, rushed to check on me. “Are you okay Your leg Your foot ”
“I am all right, but ...” I stared at him, terrified because I was sure he would ask for “big” sum of money for damage. Instead, he just let me go despite his wife’s protests. Guilty as I was,I was happy that I was spared. I was really grateful to the man for forgiving a silly kid who had made such a big mistake unintentionally.

Was the beach examined from the ship offshore beforehand. Was there access to flares to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly. These are standard measures for any respected operator. The incident is probably the result of a terrible systemic failure.
作者在第二段中质疑标准安全程序是否被执行,例如事先从船上检查海滩和准备照明弹这些是任何可信运营者的常规措施,作者推断事件源于系统性失败,这表明标准安全程序未被遵循,因此选项C. Standard safety procedures were not followed.正确。
33. 根据第三段In its best form this kind of travel has very little impact or indeed has a positive effect on the environment where it takes place. This can be by making financial donations to conservation groups providing income to local communities or ensuring protection of certain areas or animals.
该段开头强调生态旅游在理想形式下对环境有轻微或正面影响,并举例说明如捐款支持保护组织、为当地社区创收和确保动物保护,这些内容共同指向生态旅游的积极方面,选项A. Positive ecotourism.准确概括了主题。
34. 根据第四段Simply closing off these regions is not the answer.

40. 空格前Whatever you choose to do with your summer, try something new! 鼓励尝试新事物,后文用Also补充社交益处,因此需要一个激励句聚焦个人收获。选项D. You might surprise yourself and find a hidden talent within you直接呼应try something new,强调自我发现潜能,与后文make new friends形成递进关系(个人收获→社交收获)。

第二节
范文一
Seeing the same fright in the boy’s eyes, I quickly got out of my car. I knelt down and asked softly, “Are you hurt Let me check your arms and legs.” The boy, still trembling, shook his head. I then examined his electric bike and found only a small scratch on the handlebar. “It’s okay, the bike isn't seriously damaged,” I said, trying to calm him down. His eyes widened in surprise, as if he couldn’t believe I wasn’t angry.
The boy offered to give me some money for the damage. I waved my hand and smiled, “No need, kid. Accidents happen. Just be more careful next time, especially on icy roads.” His face turned red, and he mumbled, “Thank you, sir. I... I’m really sorry.” I patted his shoulder, “It’s all right. Go home safely now.” Watching him ride away, I felt a warm feeling in my heart, just like the relief I’d felt that summer afternoon long ago.
范文二
Seeing the same fright in the boy’s eyes, I quickly got out of my car. “Are you okay Your leg Your foot ” I asked the same questions. The boy leaning on the bike shook his head nervously and spoke nothing. He just looked at me with his blue eyes wide open. I could see why. My car was badly damaged at the rear, which obviously would cost me lots of money to repair it. I just smiled and turned to check my car. Suddenly, the boy said something behind me.
The boy offered to give me some money for the damage. I turned around and looked at him in the eyes and smiled again. “No worries, kid,” I said, “It is not a big deal. I can handle it myself.” The boy was puzzled. “I experienced the same things when I was as your age and I was forgiven, so are you now. Just go home and be careful.” I explained to him. An obvious surprise flashed across his face but was quickly replaced by great relief. He got off his bike and bowed deeply, saying, “Thank you, sir.” I smiled again, knowing that: A seed of kindness and forgiveness was planted.
