When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked. ''Are the things she says true or not Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said. ''
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. ''That's just for you, '' he said. ''You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of help to you. ''
Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do. Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.
4. What did the father do after he had heard his daughter's complaint
A. He agreed with her "enemy".
B. he let her continue to put up with her "enemy".
C. He told her not to pay attention to what her "enemy" had said.
D. He told her to write down all her "enemy" had said about her.
5. What does "Week by week her list grew" mean
A. Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me.
B. She had made a list of my shortcomings and she kept on adding new ones to it so that it was growing longer and longer.
C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.
D. Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious.
6. Why did her father listen to her quietly
A. Because he believed that what her daughter's "enemy" said was mostly true.
B. Because he had been so angry with her daughter and wanted to keep silent
C Because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment.
D. Because he was not quite sure which girl was telling the truths.
7. Which do you think would be the best title for this passage
A. Not an Enemy, but the Best Friend
B. My Father
C. The Best Advice I've Ever Had
D. My Childhood

Teenagers’ fitness is now a major concern, to which physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr.Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers: “Firstly, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.”
Dr Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr Lopez, overweight teenagers should keep active to keep healthy. Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn up calories. Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. “Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” said Dr Lopez. The same principle applies to active teenagers.
Dr Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. “These are really important in order to prevent injuries,” Dr Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be planned in the programme in order to increase the person s strength.
8. What can we learn from the passage
A. Active people always have a high fitness level.
B. Overweight people always take more exercise.
C. Inactive teenagers are not seriously overweight.
D. Keeping fit means changing teenagers’ lifestyle.
9. Which of the following statements is NOT the reason why physical exercise is important
A. It can make the teenagers grow taller.
B. It can help teenagers become healthier.
C. It can help to burn up calories.
D. It can increase teenagers’ strength.
10. In order to prevent injuries, you should do some ________ exercises.
A. walking B. stretching and bending
C. riding D. weight-training
11. What is the best title for the passage
A. Doing exercises B. Teenagers fitness
C. Different lifestyles D. Overweight teenagers

To prevent the deserts coming near, China has planted billions of trees---to replace destroyed forests and as barriers against the sand. This isn’t a cure, though, say experts, as thirsty trees can make the problem worse by taking in groundwater.
“Planting trees is one way, but it isn’t that simple. It doesn’t solve the basic issue of water resources,” says Wu Bo, a professor. “We need to calculate how much water the trees will absorb, or else it could have a negative effect.”
Villagers in Zhengxin have taken on this challenge, with limited success. When the irrigation channels began to run dry, Lu Xianglin switched from wheat to cotton on his land. He also planted trees to protect his fields from sandstorms. He says he still gets good yields(产量) using flood irrigation and earns a good income for his family.
Other farmers haven’t stuck it out(坚持到底): about one in three have left Zhengxin in the past 10 years after their wheat crops died. Young people who can find jobs in the towns rarely return.
Last week, Mr Lu joined the other men in his village on a government-arranged trip to see the land that has been set aside for their relocation, nearly 40 miles to the south. The next day, he was back, shaking his head at the plan. The idea of uprooting his family troubles him, as does the idea of giving up the land that fed his forefathers. He prefers to stay and keep up the fight.
“With enough water, this problem can be solved,” Lu says. “We can plant trees and grass, and they will grow bigger. That will stop the desert.”
Experts say that farmers could switch to drip irrigation (滴灌)to lessen their water intake for growing crops. Elsewhere in the region, farmers have built brick greenhouses as part of a plan to grow vegetables using less water. Roadside signs urge farmers to “Save Water, Protect the Environment”.
12. The negative effect of planting trees in deserts is that __________.
A. it can make groundwater become less
B. it can prevent the sand moving freely
C. it can stop crops growing well
D. it can get the soil to become poor
13. Why did Mr. Lu NOT accept the idea of relocation
A. Because the plan of relocation will cost him much money.
B. Because his family had trouble moving away.
C. Because he was reluctant to give up his land.
D Because he would rather stay than fight against the deserts.
14. What can we infer from the passage
A. The deserts drive more and more people to leave their homes for their lives.
B. People have no means to fight against the land becoming desert.
C. Water is the biggest barrier for people to stop the desert.
D. Planting trees cannot solve the problem of desertification of farmland.
15. What advice is given by experts to save water
A. To plant more trees.
B. To build greenhouses.
C. To change crops.
D. To use drip irrigation.

The science teacher, Mr. Moose, decided that the school would have a paper airplane contest (比赛). Each student would design a paper airplane. And then they would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane flew the farthest would win.
When Mr. Moose announced the paper airplane contest, all the students were very excited. Paul, who was on the wrestling (摔跤) team, said to other students. “I am the strongest. And I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”
However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big pile of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded (折叠) an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.

【答案】 The contest day arrived in the end and all the students gathered on the playground. Finally, it was Brian’s turn. He held the plane that he had folded the day before. It began to fly, farther and farther, until it landed 5 feet farther than Paul’s plane. The whole school cheered and were very happy. Brian won the contest. Mr. Moose awarded him a great prize: a toy airplane.
Excitedly, Brian got the prize from Mr. Moose’s hand and all the students clapped their hands for him. Brian won the contest because he had tried his best many times to solve the problem on how to make a plane fly farther. He made it by testing out many different designs and compare the results. When he found the best way to fly the farthest, he knew he succeeded.
