Power of Public Speaking has partnered with ASI Innovation Labs to integrate artificial intelligence into the Pops Classroom platform for improving public speaking skills. The first project is the Pops Advisor which provides an automatic evaluation of students’ video presentations with visual feedback.
The Advisor offers on-demand comments to students practicing public speaking from anywhere. This flexibility benefits instructors, who can be as hands-on or hands-off during practice. While students can operate autonomously with the tool, instructors can also choose to keep track of students’ progress.
Criteria
Using machine learning models, the Pops Advisor analyzes the following criteria:
Delivery Introduction Body Conclusion
Vocal Style Vocal Quality Vocal Filler Eye Contact Body Language Credibility Attention Central Idea Preview Connective Support Language Connective Credibility Organization Signaling Ending Summary Memorable Ending Credibility
Feedback
The presenter receives feedback on the above four categories. And this feedback is given in the following formats:
Recommendations
To provide presenters with valuable feedback for the next practice, recommendations focus on specific aspects needing improvement. For instance, the recommendation can be “Your message is clear, but be sure you are grabbing your audience’s attention in your introduction to ensure they are listening.”
Speech Metrics (指标)
Useful speech metrics serve as quantitative descriptors on several aspects of the presentation including number of words, total presentation time, speaking rate and vocal fillers percentage.
Pops Advisor can be used in any classroom setting where students are presenting, particularly in the Basic Public Speaking Course. When you are considering what can be achieved by your students toward skill development in a single school semester, Advisor increases the overall development.

B
My childhood was a painted picture of a sunny sky and rolling green fields stretching to the horizon. It tasted of sharp berries and smelt of sour grapes. My family lived in a cabin in the countryside, but I lived in my mother’s arms. They were so delicate but strong, and her red hair falling around me was like a curtain that separated me from the world.
Childhood was simple. The borders of my village were the furthest my troubles went and monsters only lived in the pages of books. Every day was a waking dream of running races and muddy knees. My village was archaic, dying cabins housing dying farmers with dying traditions. There weren’t many children but me and the other boys; boys of butchers and sellers formed our own group.
They called us wild. I suppose we were. Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter. Liberated from the restrictions of society, we would bound into the woods, deeper and deeper until we found a lake which, with a wild yell, we would jump into all at once.
My most vivid memories from boyhood center around that lake. Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams broke into the outcry from birds. The shock of cold water against sweating skin would wake every nerve in my body and my bare feet would hit the sinking muddy bottom. As we submerged, time would stop, movements slowing as bubbles rose around us.
I was drowning. I was living. I was living. I was drowning. For timelessness or a second (both felt the same), we would pause, curl up, and then be forced back out into breathing air.
We should have known that it wouldn’t last forever. Yet, even under the best circumstances, there’s something so tragic about growing up: your perspective on the people and life around you changes; you always struggle to reach a mirror, only to find yourself tall enough to see your reflection one day and find a different person staring back out at you.
24. Why does the author describe his mother’s red hair as “a curtain that separated me from the world”
A. To show her artistic personality. B. To emphasize her protective presence.
C. To illustrate his fascination with colors. D. To reveal his fear of social interactions.
25. What does the underlined word “archaic” in paragraph 2 most probably mean
A. Old-fashioned. B. Time-honored. C. Mountain-ringed. D. Poverty-stricken.
26. What does the lake symbolize in the author’s boyhood memories
A. A dangerous pause in time. B. A mirror reflecting adulthood.
C. A place of social restrictions. D. A temporary escape from reality.
27. What message does the author convey in the last paragraph
A. Struggle and challenge make a man grow up.
B. Childhood joy is completely erased by growth.
C. Growth often brings unavoidable self-reinvention.
D. The regret of growth is that people and life always change.
C
In satellite images of the Earth from space, the United States seems to split in half: the eastern side is much brighter than the west. Across the Atlantic, Europe glints. The Nile Delta in Africa glows like a diamond. Farther east, Hong Kong and Shanghai are afire. Developed society, it’s clear, is where the light is.
A growing field of research suggests that night-time light itself is far more dangerous than the dark. Everything that lives on this planet evolved during billions of years along a reliable cycle of day and night. But artificial light breaks the cycle. This causes sleeplessness among astronauts who take pills but still get only six hours of shuteye. Shift workers, who rise with the night and work in blue light, experience not only disturbed circadian rhythms (昼夜节律), but an increased likelihood of breast cancer.
When we, in the industrialized world, do manage to turn off the lights, there are measurable, beneficial effects. In a widely reported paper last summer, Kenneth Wright at the University of Colorado took eight students camping in the Rocky Mountains for two weeks. They weren’t allowed to use any artificial light after sunset — only the glow of campfire. After a week, melatonin (褪黑素) started to rise at sunset, peak at midnight, and decrease just at sunrise. “Internal biological time under natural light-dark conditions tightly synchronizes with environmental time,” he said.
For those of us addicted to our glowing phones and tablets, an app called Flux can help. It ‘warms’ your device’s display screen so that it shifts red in the evening, more closely matching the color of the setting sun. Just a brief glimpse at your mobile phone at bedtime is enough to expose your eyes to artificial light, so fighting such a disturbance might be an exercise in vain. But even if we can’t completely contain our thirst for light, we can all make one small gesture, which could stimulate us to unplug a little more.
28. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. Darkness poses health threats to shift workers.
B. Sleeplessness are more likely to cause breast cancer.
C. Humans can easily adapt to the changing surroundings.
D. Astronauts take pills to minimize day-and-night cycle disturbance.
29. What does the underlined word “synchronize with” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Correspond to. B. Interact with. C. Object to. D. Blend with.
30. How does Flux help reduce the harmful effects of artificial light
A. By blocking artificial lights. B. By warming the screen temperature.
C. By reducing screen brightness. D. By creating the natural change of light.
31. What’s the purpose of the final sentence
A. To settle a debate. B. To suggest a solution.
C. To promote a product. D. To contradict an assumption.
D
“Individuals of all ages who have empathy (共情) understand that sometimes telling little white lies can protect other people from getting hurt,” says Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist in Connecticut. “Most people that I have come across tell these little white lies because they understand that 100 percent honesty all the time is not beneficial.” A white lie, she explains, spares people from unnecessary hurt.
At the same time, Dr. Julia Breur, a marriage and family therapist in Florida, emphasizes the importance of paying attention to the way we respond to someone. The fact is that not telling the truth can result in something unpleasant on you; it’s not just about the person the white lie is being told to. For example, she says someone who always tells others that “all is good” when it comes to a sick parent in an effort to avoid discussions about how serious their health issue really is, can eventually face stressful experiences. When that parent eventually passes away, the person who always gave an “all is good” response ends up emotionally broken.
Sometimes, telling white lies often depends on the situation, Dr. Breur says. For example, consider a woman who has not seen her mother for several months. The daughter has gained noticeable weight, yet the mother responds by excitedly declaring that she looks great. “I emphasize during psychotherapy sessions with my patients that context helps define meaning,” Dr. Breur says. “So when we look at the context of a mother saying you look great when she clearly sees that her daughter has gained weight, it can be acceptable. It reflects the intention of the white lie which is kindness, protection and unconditional love. Otherwise, white lies — especially when told to avoid personal accountability — can start a cycle of mistrust between people, ultimately compromising integrity,” she adds.
Therefore, it’s important to ask ourselves when it is and isn’t appropriate to deliver the honest truth, and when it’s best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about finding a balance between the two.
32. What can be learned about white lies according to Barbara Greenberg
A. They are short-lived. B. They are unidentifiable.
C. They are trouble-making. D. They are common.
33. What message does Dr. Breur deliver in paragraph 2
A. White lies can harm both the liars and the listeners.
B. We must respond to our family members truthfully.
C. It’s wrong to tell white lies to a seriously ill parent.
D. The “all is good” response is effective in dealing with patients.
34. What is Dr. Breur’s attitude towards the mother’s practice in paragraph 3
A. Uncaring. B. Critical. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. East or West, White Lies Are the Best B. Think Twice Before You Tell White Lies
C. White Lies Signify Unconditional Love D. White Lies Are Empathetic People’s Favorable Choice

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
For teenagers, the importance of adequate nightly sleep remains constant. Enough shut-eye time is crucial to both physical health and cognitive functioning. 36 Parents are deeply worried about this. Here are some tips for parents to cushion the blow from the school stuff, such as earlier school start time and mounting amounts of homework.
Set up a bedtime routine. A regular bedtime routine starting around the same time each night encourages good sleep patterns. 37 For old ones, this might include a quiet and reflective chat.
Check noise and light in your child’s bedroom. 38 Check if your child’s bedroom is too light or noisy for sleep. Blue light from various screens might contain melatonin levels and delay sleepiness.
Ensure good dinner with reasonable amounts. The saying goes that we should eat like a king in the morning, a prince at noon and a farmer at night. But the farmer-way of dinner doesn’t apply to your children. They need more nutrition. But make sure your child has a right amount of evening meal. Feeling hungry or full before bed makes your child uncomfortable. 39
40 Most children receive a portion of their recommended amount of sleep each day from naps. Not sleeping through the night is fairly common for young children, so they need an extra boost from daytime naps to ensure they get enough sleep for any given 24-hour period.
A. Take a good nap.
B. Sleep through the night.
C. This can make it hard for your child to get to sleep.
D. A quiet, dimly lit space is important for a good sleep.
E. Fixed bath and story time helps small kids ready for sleep.
F. Daytime naps are said to be a good addition to nightly sleep.
G. That said, surveys reveal one in five teens sleep less than seven hours.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The Thompson house was always noisy before school. Every morning, twelve-year-old Mia did her hair at the kitchen table, her fingers moving quickly as she tried to ignore the regular “clang-clang-clang” beside her. Her little brother Leo, his cheeks still soft with sleep, was hitting his spoon on his bowl like a bell.
“Stop it” Mia said, throwing potato chips at him. As she did, the necklace (项链) around her neck moved a little. The necklace, made of shells (贝壳), was her most loved thing — a gift from Grandma before she passed away. Mia valued this necklace greatly. She remembered how Grandma had handpicked each shell during their last trip to the beach. “This round shell means patience,” Grandma had whispered stories while placing it around Mia’s neck. Right now, Mia needed all the patience she could get.
As the days went by, Mia found herself struggling less to keep her patience. Leo’s noisy habits, though still bothersome, didn’t seem as annoying as before. There were moments when she’d catch him making funny faces or dancing around to music only she could hear. She would roll her eyes, but deep down, a part of her smiled. One afternoon, while sitting together on the sofa, Leo shyly asked about the necklace. “Why do you love it so much ” he whispered. Mia then told him the story of Grandma and the special meaning of each shell. For a moment, Leo looked thoughtful, and Mia hoped he understood how much the necklace meant to her. She wished he would be more careful — but little did she know, that wish was about to be tested.
After a two-day summer camp, Mia came home and found Leo lying on her bedroom floor, her box turned over. “What are you doing ” she shouted. Leo jumped. “I — I just wanted to see…” The necklace fell from his hand, and the string broke. The shells dropped to the floor like small white teeth, some of them broken into several parts.

M: No, not for a long time. But I am especially interested in working in schools in poor areas, as quite often that’s where the athletes of the future can be found.

【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27.

【答案】28. D 29. A 30. D 31. B

【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. B

Mia’s heart sank. She stared at the broken shells on the floor, her breath caught in her throat. “You knew this was special” She picked up the pieces, her voice shaking. “Get out” Leo stepped back quickly. “I didn’t mean to…” he whispered, his voice shaking. “You never mean to” she screamed. Leo’s face turned pale, and he quickly bent down to pick up the pieces. Mia turned away, unable to speak. That night, she lay in bed staring at the ceiling, remembering Grandma’s warm hands and gentle voice: “Patience” She clutched her pillow, trying to forget the broken necklace.
The next morning, Mia was surprised to find a box on her desk. On top was a note, written in shaky letters: “I’m sorry, Mia. I tried to fix it.” Inside, she saw the broken shells carefully glued back together, some tied with string, some placed in the shape of a heart. At the center was a new shell — small, but shining — clearly one Leo had found himself. Mia smiled through tears. It wasn’t perfect, but it was filled with love. She picked up the necklace and gently placed it around her neck, whispering, “Thank you, Leo.”
