When Jack Prelutsky was a kid in New York more than fifty years ago, he didn't know he would grow up to write poetry for children.
Neither of his parents read poetry to him when he was little. When his fourth grade teacher read poems in class, he thought they seemed boring. To nine year old Prelutsky, poetry seemed like serious business. And Prelutsky was anything but serious. “I wanted to hear poems about myself—about outer space and sports and music,” he says. “So I started to think of poetry as punishment.”
Prelutsky had always taken voice and piano lessons, but when he attended New York's High School of Music and Art, his love for music grew deeper. “I liked the way songs said what they had to say—the simple, direct, ordinary language they employed. I really think that's what made me see poetry in a new light.”
Then Prelutsky took a drawing class in his early twenties and found he wasn't very good at life drawing. But he was good at drawing imaginary animals.
In six months, Prelutsky drew a lot of imaginary animals with strange characteristics. He loved each one, but felt something was missing. “Then one evening, I looked at them and said, ‘They need poems.’ I still don't know why I thought of it, but within half an hour, I had all the poems written.”
Publishing the poems never crossed Prelutsky's mind in those early days. But when friends fell in love with his poems, he agreed to share them with a children's book editor.
“She didn't think much of my illustrations (插图),” he says, “but she told me that I was a natural poet and encouraged me to keep writing.”
At the time, Prelutsky was surprised at the editor's encouragement. But more than forty books later, he's still making friends and fans laugh. From monsters to frogs, Prelutsky has turned silly into an art form.

Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature.I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. My consumption of new books has doubled as a result—but a recent paper makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my comprehension.
The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel, both at the University of Chicago, and it draws from the “dual process model” of mental processing.According to this view, we have two ways of assessing information.System 1 is intuitive(直觉的), relying on natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely exposed to misinformation.System 2 is analytical, involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think through the material step by step.
For decades, psychologists have designed various tests to determine which of these two systems a person is using.Imagine you're helping prepare for a small dinner party and are tasked with arranging the dining settings for seven guests.Instinctively, you lay out seven complete sets of cutlery(餐具).However, your friend mentions that among the guests is a very young child, leading you to rethink your initial set up.Realizing the child won't need a standard set of cutlery as the adult, you opt to replace it with a child friendly spoon. That is the kind of analytical process.
Keysar and Geipel's brilliant idea was to investigate whether the sensory form—seeing vs hearing—of the information would make a difference. They found that it did: when answering these kinds of simple questions, participants were more likely to make errors when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written.
A greater reliance on our feelings could be a problem if we are consuming information that needs logical study. For this reason, I will return to reading non fiction with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won't stop listening to novels.I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.
5.What does the author think of listening to audiobooks?( D )
A.It is economical. B.It is demanding.
C.It is time consuming. D.It is relaxing.
根据第一段中的“I find it far more comfortable to ‘read with my ears' while my eyes are resting. My consumption of new books has doubled as a result”可知,作者认为听有声书是一种舒适的方式,同时也提到了通过听书,作者能在眼睛休息的同时享受文学作品,这让他读新书的数量倍增。
6.Which of the following best describes System 2 model?( A )
A.Fairly reliable. B.Fully automatic.
C.Question centered. D.Emotion involved.
根据第二段中的“System 2 is analytical, involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged,we think through the material step by step.” 故选A项。
7.Why is the dining setting task mentioned in paragraph 3?( B )
A.To present a fact.
B.To illustrate a view.
C.To introduce a topic.
D.To draw a conclusion.
8.What does the author intend to tell us?( A )
A.Listening to books comes at a price.
B.Reading non fiction books benefits.
C.Critical thinking is a must in reading.
D.Ways of processing information differ.
根据第一段中的“but a recent paper makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my comprehension”和最后一段中的“A greater reliance on our feelings could be a problem if we are consuming information that needs logical study.” 故选A项。

5.What does the author think of listening to audiobooks?( )
A.It is economical. B.It is demanding.
C.It is time consuming. D.It is relaxing.

D
6.Which of the following best describes System 2 model?( )
A.Fairly reliable. B.Fully automatic.
C.Question centered. D.Emotion involved.
根据第二段中的“System 2 is analytical, involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged,we think through the material step by step.” 故选A项。
A
7.Why is the dining setting task mentioned in paragraph 3?( )
A.To present a fact.
B.To illustrate a view.
C.To introduce a topic.
D.To draw a conclusion.
B
8.What does the author intend to tell us?( )
A.Listening to books comes at a price.
