Letter OneDear Editor,
After I finish my homework, I often go online and chat with my friends. Sometimes I play computer games. But my parents hate to see me playing games on the computer. Maybe they have heard too much news about how QQ and computer games harm children. Once I went to a net bar(网吧) to play games after school. But after that I told my parents that I was playing basketball at school. I said so because I didn't want to make them unhappy. I feel bad about it. However, I need to rest for a while by playing computer games after studying for a long time. I really want my parents to understand that. Do foreign parents do the same to their children Please help me.
Li Ping,
Beijing
Letter TwoDear Li Ping,
I don't think it's strange for parents to keep their children away from anything bad. Foreign parents will do the same as your parents! They may not let their children watch TV for too long a time, or like your parents, they don't want their children to play computer games.
Talk to your parents and be honest to them, I think. Tell them what you are doing and why you are doing so to make them understand you. It's never good to do things behind your parents. They aren't fools as you think sometimes! Our parents seem to know what is the best for us.
Remember: to be honest is the best way.
Good luck,
Rebecca

Maureen Evelyn's life changed when she applied to Harvard—not to get in, but to get rejected to build confidence. “When I was in high school, I feared failure,” says Evelyn. “This fear made me lack confidence, because I was always trying to be perfect. I decided to stop this and just try to get told ‘no’ and realize there's no physical pain associated.”
Is there a better way to get rejected than applying to Harvard, a school that accepts less than 4% of its applicants Plus, she figured, the application would only take three hours. What did she have to lose
She applied as a joke and was shocked to be waitlisted. Getting waitlisted by Harvard might be demoralizing for many, but for Evelyn, it marked a turning point. Her fear of rejection had held her back, but now she saw possibilities.
“It kind of clicked in my brain that we hold ourselves back from these crazy opportunities because we don't think we're going to get them,” she says. “Once waitlisted by Harvard, I thought, wow, this could change my life.” Afterward, Evelyn sought more rejections. She dined with strangers, got interviewed on TV, posed in a fancy car, and applied to a famous modeling agency. The agency politely declined, saying she looked “too otherworldly”. Who knew rejection could make you feel so good
Psychotherapist (心理治疗师) Stephanie Sarkis says rejection therapy (治疗法) is effective when done strategically, but she wants people to keep in mind that the goal is to experience rejection—not to accidentally land great opportunities. Everyone faces rejection; it's part of life.
Evelyn has been told “no” countless times. Most memorably, construction workers refused her request to use their jackhammers (手提钻) because she wasn't dressed properly. Actually doing these things wasn't the point. It was her bravery to ask that made all the difference.

For Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative.
“It’s no secret that China has always been a source(来源) of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion(时尚) shows.
Earlier this year, the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics(美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.
“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill. “Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion — they are central to its movement.” Of course, not only are today’s top Western designers being influenced by China—some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese. “Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs—and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill.
For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. “The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says. “China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China—its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.”

I was always terrible at sports, fearful of being the last one picked for the baseball team in the high school and frightened at the possibility that a ball might come to me and even worse, that I might have to catch it.
So as I held my first son in my arms, I wondered, “In a baseball-loving country where every boy will pick it up, who’s going to teach him how to throw a ball Who’s going to explain to him the rules of baseball ”
For several years when Will and his younger brother, Tim, were toddlers I could put off the Reckoning Day (清算日) by rolling balls around, inside and out, but I knew that day would eventually come.
Every dad wants to be a hero to his kids, but I didn’t see how I could if I couldn’t show my sons how to hit the ball with a bat. It was at this moment in my parenting that inspiration struck. I chatted with some of the other dads in the neighborhood, the ones who really could be coaches, and suggested we start our own baseball league. “That sounds great, Rick,” they said. “We’d love to coach, but who could organize something like that ” “Well,” I hesitated, “I could try.” Being an organizer may mean taking some phone calls to get a permit for a field or order some uniforms, but that sounded easier to me than explaining the difference between a ball and a strike.
That was the birth of Hudson Cliffs Baseball, now in its 13th straight season. I often see kids in the neighborhood with an “H. C.” on their ball caps. Every time I see them, I want to tell them how it all came about because the first commissioner (行政管理人) of the league was a failure at sports.
Am I a hero to my sons I don’t know. But guess who is the commissioner of the baseball league at his college My first born. Like father, like son. Except he can really hit the ball.
12.What can be inferred about the author in paragraph 2
A.He wanted his sons to be independent. B.He was anxious about his parenting role.
C.He wanted to learn baseball skills for his sons. D.He didn’t think baseball was right for his sons.

A.The duty of making his sons love sports. B.The pressure of starting a baseball league.
C.The task of testing his sons’ sportsmanship. D.The responsibility of teaching his sons baseball.
14.Why did the author want to start a baseball league
A.To challenge the other dads. B.To prove himself to his sons.
C.To build up a name for himself. D.To show his organizational ability.

As long as we have been on earth, we have used the sea around us. We take from the ocean, and we give to it.
We take fishes from the ocean — millions of kilograms of fish, every year, to feed millions of people. 16 We take minerals from the ocean. One way to get salt is to place seawater in a shallow basin and leave it until it evaporates. 17 Much gold and silver drift dissolved in the waters of the sea, too. But the sea does not give them up by simple evaporation. Other gifts from the sea are pearls, sponges and seaweed. Pearls become jewelry. 18 Seaweed becomes food of many kinds — even candy, and ice cream — as well as medicine. Believe it or not, fresh water is another gift from the sea. We cannot drink ocean water. 19 But ocean water becomes fresh water when the salts are removed. In the future, we will find ourselves depending more and more on fresh water from the sea.
The sea gives us food, fertilizer, minerals, water, and other gifts. What do we give to the sea Garbage. 20 Huge as it is, the ocean cannot hold all the water that we pour into it. Dumping garbage into the ocean is killing off sea life, too. Yet as the world population grows, we may need the sea and its gifts more than ever.
We are finally learning that if we destroy our seas, we might also destroy ourselves. Hopefully, it is not too late.
A.We even use their bones for fertilizer.
B.Some of its contents may cause illness.
C.Natural sponges become cleaning aids.
D.The area of the sea is becoming smaller and smaller.
E.We take a lot from the ocean and give little to the sea.
F.We pollute the ocean when we use it as a garbage dump.
G.Along with salt, other minerals are left after evaporation.

“We’ll be back in a couple of hours,” my parents said to me. “OK,” I replied uneasily as it was the first time that I had ever been alone at home. I had been looking forward to this for such a long time, but now all of a sudden it didn’t seem so enjoyable. As they went out the door, I went to the window to wave them goodbye. They waved back at me, not understanding the fear that was inside me. As they pulled out of the driveway, all the usual safety was removed from the house. Then it all began.
It was just me and the house, facing all of the robbers and bad guys that might come after me because, of course, my parents weren’t at home. I quickly ran through the house , turning each light on, so that I could go into each room without the fear of a witch (女巫) emerging from the shadows. Even so, I still felt uneasy in this empty house.
It had only been a few minutes since my parents had left and I thought I had had enough. Then. I decided, “I can watch TV and I’ll be fine and have some fun.” I turned on the TV and avoided any violent shows. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw headlights coming down the road in front of my house. “I’ll just check to make sure they don’t pull into my driveway,” I said.
As the night wore on, I continued to check each car that passed by — just to be safe. Fortunately, there were no more problems and I even had a little fun watching TV. Then, the most terrible thing happened: One of the passing cars pulled in and began speeding down my driveway. As it got closer, I realized that it was an old rickety (摇摇晃晃的) truck, and a person that I had never seen before.

根据画线词所在句“Getting waitlisted by Harvard might be demoralizing for many, but for Evelyn, it marked a turning point.”和下文“Her fear of rejection had held her back, but now she saw possibilities.” 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“…, but she wants people to keep in mind that the goal is to experience rejection—not to accidentally land great opportunities.”
文章第一段提到伊夫林“求”拒绝是为了建立自信,最后一段最后一句“It was her bravery to ask that made all the difference.”

根据下文and beating them hands down in design and sales说在设计和销售上击败他们,由此推断出上文Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Mare Jacobs的意思是Vera Wang、Alexander Wang和Jason Wu正在与Galliano、Albaz和 Mare Jacobs竞争。

This scene threw a scare into me. What if it’s a bad guy Heart pounding, I froze for a moment, unsure of what to do. I shakily went over to the phone, picked it up, and began to dial my parents’ cell phone number as I hid below the window next to the front door. To worsen my fears, my parents did not pick up the phone. I thought I should have something to defend myself with, just in case. So I hurried to the kitchen and grabbed the broom, preparing myself for the worst. But nothing happened.
As I refocused on the truck, I made out the person. It was our neighbor. He was unloading some chairs and putting them next to our house. I breathed a sigh of relief as I went over and sat back down. The night continued pretty slowly but I got through it. When I finally did it, I realized that it was a great experience for me-it was a coming-of-age opportunity. I faced my fears that very first night, which was the first step on the stairs of growing up-when I began earning some independence. Now whenever my parents aren’t at home, I enjoy myself, quite happy that I can have the house to myself.
