二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共3小题)
Growing up in a multicultural household is an experience that profoundly shapes a person’s identity. As a boy, my life is like a painting made with colors from German, Hungarian, and Argentine cultures. The unique mix of their languages, traditions, and customs blends (融合) together, shaping how I see the world.
I spoke four languages naturally: German and Hungarian with my parents, Spanish outside home, and later English. My parents survived World War II and taught me their stories of hope through their languages. At school, we learned different subjects in Spanish, German, and English. Though switching languages was easy for me, sometimes, it made me feel different. While friends had one main culture, I balanced many cultures, which made me feel like I belonged nowhere.
Our home traditions stood out. We ate dinner earlier than most Argentine families did. When friends stayed out very late as teenagers, I preferred going home earlier like my family. Music at home, in addition, was different too. Instead of Argentine tango or folk songs, we listened to German classical music and American pop. I connected more to these sounds from my parents’ childhoods.
Living with three cultures was hard at times. Even though I was born in Argentina, I didn’t always feel completely Argentine. My daily habits, traditions, and even how I thought about things felt more connected to my family’s European background. I wished I didn’t have to explain why my family did things differently. As I grew up, however, I learned to love my background since it taught me to adapt, understand different views, and feel at home anywhere. If you have multiple cultures, don’t see them as an issue. It’s special! I have more homes, more traditions, and a wider view of the world. My background is a gift that makes me unique.
4.Why did the author feel that he belonged nowhere
A.He was influenced by a war.
B.He felt rootless among cultures.
C.He struggled with every language.
D.He lived a life of constant relocation.
5.How did the author’s family differ from typical Argentine families
A.They prioritized family over friends.
B.They followed an earlier dinner time.
C.They never gathered for meals outside.
D.They preferred folk music to classical music.
6.What did the author finally view his multicultural identity as
A.An experience of enriching his life.
B.An issue causing constant confusion.
C.A responsibility to carry on cultural traditions.
D.A source of regret for not being fully Argentine.
7.What is the best title for the text
A.A Multicultural Identity’s Journey
B.A Cultural Identity in Globalization
C.Learning Languages in a Multicultural Home
D.Sinking Chances in Balancing Multiple Cultures
A bitter argument arose after it was reported that the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) — southern Oregon’s 80-year-old annual theatrical festival — would be authorizing playwrights (剧作家) to “translate” all of Shakespeare’s plays into modern English.
The project drew anger from Shakespearean professors, artists and others who believe firmly in the power of Shakespeare’s original texts and are against any attempt to simplify their language.
As an educator and lover of Shakespearean drama, I believe in the value of presenting Shakespeare’s plays in their original language. I require my students to read Shakespeare’s plays in their original form, and through my work on the World Shakespeare Project, I’ve witnessed undergraduates (本科生) in places such as India, Uganda and Argentina enthusiastically respond to the challenge.
Yet the anger over the OSF’s new modernization project is misguided. The organization — which is known for experimentation — is simply taking part in a centuries-long tradition of adapting Shakespeare’s original texts.
Among those criticizing the new project is Columbia University Professor James Shapiro, a well-known Shakespearean scholar who maintains that “with the language changed in this modernizing way the work just doesn’t have the excitement and the quality of the original language.” Earlier this month, before an audience at Shakespeare’s Globe, he added, “It’s a really bad idea.” Noticeably, however, Shapiro, along with many others, responded quite differently to the translation of a different classic text. On Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney’s often-praised 1999 rewriting of Beowulf, Shapiro wrote in The New York Times: “Examples like this add up to a translation that manages to achieve what before seemed impossible: a faithful translation that is meanwhile an original and fascinating poem in its own right.” In this example, at least, Heaney’s talent apparently overcame Shapiro’s opposition to the concept.
The playwrights the company has authorized to “modernize” the language of Shakespeare’s works may or may not achieve the same success as Seamus Heaney’s Beowulf did. But for whatever reason, changing the language of Shakespeare remains to be unacceptable, while the setting, costuming and theoretical conceptualization of his plays are fair game for innovation.
8.Why does the author mention some undergraduates
A.To clear up their misunderstanding about Shakespeare.
B.To show their interest in Shakespeare’s original works.
C.To stress their key role in the World Shakespeare Project.
D.To show their anger over the OSF’s modernization project.
9.What can we say about James Shapiro
A.He always keeps his word. B.He thinks little of Beowulf.
C.He remains true to his work. D.He has contradictory views.
10.What does the author say about Shakespeare’s works
A.Innovations in them in some aspects are acceptable.
B.The language modernization of them won’t be successful.
C.They have a greater influence on playwrights than Beowulf.
D.Their setting and costuming are as important as the language.
11.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To report a breakthrough in Shakespeare’s plays.
B.To discuss a project that is linked to Shakespeare.
C.To advise Shakespeare lovers to stand up in protest.
D.To awaken people’s interest in Shakespeare’s works.
There are some things money can’t buy. Education, however, does not appear to be among them—at least as measured by performance on international exams. A new study by Harvard University offers strong evidence that the wealth of a country affects exam results just as much as the wealth of a pupil’s household does. On average, pupils in wealthy countries obtain vastly higher test scores than those in developing ones.
Evaluating test scores around the world is harder than it sounds. Although pupils in the rich world mostly take one of a few big international exams, many developing countries rely on regional tests, making apples-to-apples comparisons impossible.
Researchers organized an exam in 2016 for 2,314 children in India, which included both questions from the leading tests and ones taken from smaller exams. Using answers from the same pupils on the same day to questions from different tests, they built a statistical model they called a “Rosetta Stone”. It can translate scores from a range of exams—such as one used only in west Africa—into an equal mark on other common international tests.
They then used these equations(等式)to estimate how pupils in 80 different countries would fare on the benchmark(基准)Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Their data show that the wealth of a student’s country and family have similar impacts on test scores—meaning that big gaps in GDP per person matter more than small ones in household income do. For example, pupils from families that are very poor by rich-world standards—those earning $5,000 a year—are expected to score around 500 out of 1,000 on the TIMSS in America, and 560 in Japan. In contrast, those whose parents make $10,000 a year in an upper-middle income country can only get the equivalent(等价物)of a 475.
The influence of parental earnings is not constant. Rich people tend to educate their children privately in places where wealth is concentrated, such as Brazil. However, in countries with relatively flat income distributions, like Croatia, pupils from different social classes are more likely to attend the same schools. This could reduce the impact of family wealth on test scores.
12.Why is it hard to evaluate the exam scores on a global level
A.Because the types of exams vary with countries.
B.Because many rich countries refuse regional tests.
C.Because the wealth of a country affects exam results.
D.Because no international exam is available to poor areas.
13.Why did the researchers establish a “Rosetta Stone”
A.To integrate different exams into a common one.
B.To evaluate different exams with distinct approaches.
C.To fix the standard of the exams in different countries.
D.To turn scores of different exams into an equivalent mark.
14.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A.Poor students tend to be academically superior to rich ones.
B.Students from rich families will definitely get higher grades.
C.The influence of family income on students is related to circumstances.
D.People with high social status are more likely to educate their children privately.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.Education is something money can’t buy.
B.The wealth of a country matters for education.
C.Family income plays an important role in education.
D.A statistical model helps to evaluate the exam scores.

To put words into my time in Antarctica and South Georgia is nearly impossible.I had always described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but as soon as I stepped on the continent, I immediately knew I needed to return.
16 About 50% of the passengers of our expedition (远征队) had been to Antarctica at least once before. This goes to show just how magical a destination it is.
All your senses will be stimulated… This is the best way I can describe the time on the white continent. How tiny you feel next to towering glaciers and icebergs. The icy water move through your body as you take the famous Polar Plunge. And learn of heart-touching stories of survival from explorers of the past. 17
Antarctica makes you feel so small and insignificant, in the best way. 18 You get front row seats to witness the most incredible show: nature. It is as much beautiful as it is cruel.Like seeing a brown skua (贼鸥) attacking a penguin chick.Your heart aches. Then your expedition guide regretfully tells you that a chick that small in March would have very slim chances of surviving the upcoming winter. The cycle continues, and you're left wondering who to root for.
Things move fast in Antarctica, and every month offers something really unique and special to see.In March, the weather is a bit more unpredictable, and the sea ice is beginning to form again. 19 In two more weeks, expedition ships would not be able to break through the ice.
The penguins are completing their yearly feather-changing process. 20 The expedition team made sure we kept our distance and did not scare them into hiding under freezing water.
These animals, arguably the cutest you will ever see, survive such unfavorable environments. It's absolutely incredible to witness the challenges, the skill, the efforts… I am forever grateful to have been a visitor.
A.The list goes on.
B.But this is not always the case.
C.Our voyage was the last of the season.
D.I was not the only one who felt this way.
E.I, years later, did return to this fascinating place.
F.They are really weak during this time, and cannot dive.
G.Everything has a purpose, and the cycle of life is evident.

Little Lucy lived in a very poor part of a big city. One day, her class teacher talked about gifts and how it was much more important to give them than to receive them. She said that she hoped all the boys and girls in the class would remember to give something, however small, to their loved ones to show how much they loved them.
Afterward Lucy thought a good deal about what the teacher had said and wondered how she could afford to give anything to anybody. Her daddy gave her $1 a week for pocket money, and that didn’t go very far these days. Somehow, she thought, she would try to buy something for mother, and father, and brother, and sister, but, oh, dear, there was Grandma, too! What could she do about Grandma
The next time she went to class she asked the teacher if it would be acceptable to give Grandma just a card. The teacher said Grandma would be happy to receive the smallest thing if it was given in love. So Lucy began searching for a card for Grandma that wouldn’t cost too much. One day she saw it. The very one! It had a picture of a cat on it, and Lucy remembered that Grandma had just lost old tabby cat(斑猫)that she had loved so much. So she bought the card, paying one whole week’s pocket money for it.
On the day Lucy gave Grandma the card, she was overjoyed to see how pleased Grandma was. She said the picture of the cat was just like her own precious tabby. This gave Lucy an idea. “Someday,” she said to herself, “I’ll buy my granny a real cat. Just think how happy she’ll be then!”
She found a pet shop and asked how much a real cat would cost. “Twenty dollars,” said the man. Lucy’s face fell. Twenty dollars! How in the world would she ever get $20 That would take all her pocket money for 20 weeks — five whole months!

Recently, citizens in our city have held a heated debate on whether a heritage site from the Sui and Tang Dynasties should be explored.
Supporters believe that it offers a precious opportunity for people to gain a deeper understanding of history. Moreover, it can promote the development of local tourism, bringing economic benefits and job opportunities.
However, opponents express their concerns that the exploration might lead to the destruction of cultural relics. Once large-scale construction begins, it may cause irreversible damage.
In my opinion, we should strike a balance between exploration and protection. We can explore the site in a scientific and reasonable way, taking strict measures to protect the cultural relics while making full use of its historical and cultural value.
