二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共3小题)
Miguel Angel Gallo, born in Barcelona in 1933, has always had a passion for art. However, with limited financial resources and 13 children to feed and educate, becoming an artist was not a practical option for him at the time. And about 10 years ago, Gallo’s wife was diagnosed (诊断) with Alzheimer’s disease, and her condition worsened to the point that she had to move into a care home. This challenging period marked the beginning of Gallo’s artistic journey, when he was already 83 years old.
Gallo initially studied mechanical engineering in Barcelona and later worked for a company in Zaragoza. In 1966, he pursued management studies at IESE Business School in Barcelona, and by 1968, he had become an associate professor there.
With his academic background, Gallo was determined to study at a respected institution. However, when he applied to study art in Barcelona, he was encouraged to pursue art history instead. He was firm, replying, “No, I want to paint.” The course was initially set for four years, but due to the need to balance it with his family commitments, it took Gallo seven years to complete it. He graduated at the age of 90.
Gallo admires Francisco de Zurbarán for his masterful use of white, and Joaquín Sorolla for his skillful use of light. Reflecting on his artistic journey, he noted, “Studying art has strengthened my belief that the truly great things in life are goodness, truth, and beauty. I don’t mind making money, but increasingly, those other things matter most to me.”
Some of Gallo’s works were featured in an exhibition in Graus, a small village in the Pyrenees, where they were displayed for six months. Gallo humbly acknowledged, “After completing my degree, would I call myself an artist I don’t know, but at least now I have a piece of paper that says I am.”
4.What can be learnt about Gallo from paragraphs 1 and 2
A.He prioritized his family over his interest. B.He became a professor in his 20s.
C.He had a natural talent for doing business. D.He lived with poor health for long.
5.What happened to Gallo when he applied to study art in Barcelona
A.He was required to study longer. B.He was not advised to paint.
C.He was introduced to other institutes. D.He was not allowed to get a degree.
6.How has studying art affected Gallo
A.He has reflected on his health condition. B.He has become much humbler.
C.He has reinterpreted the meaning of wealth. D.He has developed true friendships.
7.What is the best title for the text
A.Miguel ngel Gallo: An Art Genius. B.Miguel ngel Gallo: A Late Start to Art.
C.An Art Exhibition of Miguel ngel Gallo. D.Artistic Principles Set by Miguel ngel Gallo.
A recent report by the Ministry of Education shows that the Beijing dialect is declining among the younger generation. The news doesn’t come as a surprise though, as previous studies have highlighted the “dialect crisis” in other parts of China as well.
He Hongzhi, of the Beijing Municipal Language Commission, owes this problem to migration and the promotion of Putonghua. “With rapid social development over recent years, an increasing number of migrants with different dialects can be found all over China. However, people are encouraged to speak Putonghua between each other, threatening the existence of dialects,” he told Beijing Daily.
“For many Chinese who live outside their hometowns, dialect is an important symbol of identity and a constant reminder of where they come from,” commentator Li Yue wrote on Daily Sunshine.
Dialects also reflect history and embody local culture. The Beijing dialect, for example, though being a language of the Han ethnic group, shows traces of Mongolian and Manchu languages. Mongolian and Manchu are ethnic groups who had ruled Beijing during the Yuan and Qing dynasties respectively. The Mongolian word hutong and the Manchu word Sachima (a common Chinese pastry) now appear in the Beijing dialect.
To preserve these valuable parts of history, the State Language Commission has maintained databases since 2008 to cover different local dialects, while may areas such as Beijing, Shanhai and Zhejiang province have established museums dedicated to local dialects.
But all these efforts are still not enough in keeping dialects from fading away. A more effective measure to keep them alive could be using elements such as pop songs and the “celebrity effect” to attract the young to use dialects. They need to realize that speaking their local dialect is something they can be proud of.
8.According to the passage, the Beijing dialect is declining because of ________.
A.its little attraction B.differences and the promotion of Putonghua
C.migration and the promotion of Putonghua D.rapid social development over recent years
9.Which of the following is TRUE about dialects
A.Dialects reflect a person’s hometown and education.
B.Dialects play an important role in Chinese history and culture.
C.Dialects make it hard for people to communicate with each other.
D.The Beijing dialect is mainly a mix of Mongolian and Manchu languages.
10.We can infer from the text that ________.
A.we should speak less Putonghua
B.the young hate to speak their dialects
C.the young may not realize the value of their dialects
D.the celebrities should use more dialects in daily life
11.What’s the author’s attitude towards preserving dialects
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Indifferent. D.Negative.
A new song by the famous band The Beatles has been released despite half of the band members no longer being alive, thanks to the help of AI.
The Beatles was a legendary British rock band that remained second to Elvis Presley from the 1960s. It was made up of four musicians—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The new song, titled Now and Then, is unique because it combined the singing of McCartney and Starr with Lennon, who passed away in 1980, and the guitar skills of Harrison, who passed away in 2001.
The song was initially written and partly recorded by Lennon in the late 1970s and further developed by band mates years later but as technology then was limited, they didn’t release it due to the sound quality not being satisfying.
Peter Jackson, most famous for directing The Lord of the Rings, directed the music video for Norw and Then and it can be watched now online. It was thanks to new Al audio restoration (音频修复) technology that Peter Jackson allowed the four band members to “come together” one last time.
Since its release last week, the song has been well received in the UK. Beatles fans around the world favoured this historic musical event.
”Now and Then is an absolutely heart-warming piece of work, “posted Liam Gallagher, whose hits were affected by The Beatles’ musical style.
Of course, there are those who are not totally interested in the song. ”Now and Then is not terrible. But honestly, it’s kind of boring, “Geoff Edgers wrote in The Washington Post.
The Times in the UK said the song showed Al being used to its best advantage.
12.Why was the song “Now and Then” not released at first
A.The song was not completed. B.The sound quality was not good enough.
C.The band members did not like the song. D.The song was let out before its official release.
13.How did Peter Jackson contribute to the song
A.He wrote and recorded the song.
B.He invented new audio restoration technology.
C.He restored the band members’ sound using AI.
D.He played the guitar on the recording.
14.What is the attitude of The Times towards the release of Now and Then
A.Supportive. B.Curious. C.Unfavourable. D.Unclear.
15.What is the best title of the text
A.The Beatles Remains Second to Elvis Presley
B.Beatles Fans Welcome the New Song of The Beatles
C.Peter Jnckson Directed the Music Video for The Beatles
D.The Beatles Released a New Song with the Help of Al

The sun was setting over Springdale, casting shadows across the busy community center. A group of teenagers, the members of the Springdale Youth Committee, gathered at a table. They looked determined and worried. Among them was Emily, a smart but often unnoticed girl who loves helping others.
For weeks, they had been organizing a fundraising event for the local homeless shelter, as the shelter struggled to assist the increasing number of individuals seeking help. The big day was one week away, and everything was set — until they discovered another group had a similar charity event on the same day. This could divide the people who might come and the donations they hoped to get.
“We can’t change the date now,” said Tom, a senior member, his voice filled with frustration. “We’ve already sent out invitations, and the place is booked.” Emily listened quietly to the discussion. She knew changing the date wasn’t possible, but she also realized competing with another worthy cause could hurt both sides.
After the meeting ended without a solution, Emily decided to take action. She spent the next day looking into ways to work with the other group, hoping to find a way that would help both the homeless shelter and the other cause.
The next day, she came to the committee with a suggestion. “What if we join our events ” she asked. “We could share resources, work together on promoting, and most importantly, make sure both causes are supported by the community.”
The members looked at each other, some doubtful, others interested. “That’s a great idea, Emily, but how will we get them to agree ” Laura, another member, asked. Emily had already thought this through. “I’ll talk to their organizer and show them the benefits of a joint event.” She knew the path ahead would be challenging, but she was determined to make it happen for Springdale and its people.

根据第一段中“However, with limited financial resources and 13 children to feed and educate, becoming an artist was not a practical option for him at the time. (然而,由于经济资源有限,13个孩子要养活和教育,成为一名艺术家对他来说并不是一个现实的选择。)”可知,由于经济资源有限且要养育和教育13个孩子,成为艺术家对他来说不是一个现实的选择,说明他把家庭放在了兴趣之前。故选A项。
5.细节理解题。根据第三段中“However, when he applied to study art in Barcelona, he was encouraged to pursue art history instead. He was firm, replying, “No, I want to paint.” (然而,当他申请在巴塞罗那学习艺术时,他被鼓励去学习艺术史。他很坚定地回答:“不,我想画画。”)”可知,当他申请在巴塞罗那学习艺术时,别人鼓励他学习艺术史而不是绘画,即他不被建议画画。故选B项。
6.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Reflecting on his artistic journey, he noted, “Studying art has strengthened my belief that the truly great things in life are goodness, truth, and beauty. I don’t mind making money, but increasingly, those other things matter most to me.” (回顾自己的艺术之旅,他说:“学习艺术让我更加坚信,生命中真正伟大的东西是真、善、美。我不介意赚钱,但其他事情对我来说越来越重要。”)”可知,学习艺术让他更加坚信生活中真正伟大的东西是善良、真理和美丽,他不介意赚钱,但越来越觉得这些其他的东西对他来说才是最重要的,说明他重新诠释了财富的意义,不再只看重金钱。故选C项。
7.主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中“This challenging period marked the beginning of Gallo’s artistic journey, when he was already 83 years old. He graduated at the age of 90.

根据第四段中“Dialects also reflect history and embody local culture.(方言也反映历史,体现当地文化。)”可知,方言在中国历史和文化中扮演着重要的角色,所以“Dialects play an important role in Chinese history and culture.”是正确表述。故选B。
10.推理判断题。根据最后一段“But all these efforts are still not enough in keeping dialects from fading away. A more effective measure to keep them alive could be using elements such as pop songs and the “celebrity effect” to attract the young to use dialects. They need to realize that speaking their local dialect is something they can be proud of.(但是,所有这些努力仍然不足以阻止方言的消失。一个更有效的措施是利用流行歌曲和“名人效应”等元素来吸引年轻人使用方言。他们需要意识到,说自己的方言是一件值得骄傲的事情。)”可推知,年轻人可能没有意识到他们方言的价值。故选C。
11.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“To preserve these valuable parts of history, the State Language Commission has maintained databases since 2008 to cover different local dialects, while may areas such as Beijing, Shanhai and Zhejiang province have established museums dedicated to local dialects.(为了保护这些珍贵的历史部分,国家语言委员会自2008年以来一直维护着涵盖不同地方方言的数据库,而北京、上海和浙江省等许多地区都建立了专门的地方方言博物馆。)”以及最后一段“But all these efforts are still not enough in keeping dialects from fading away. A more effective measure to keep them alive could be using elements such as pop songs and the “celebrity effect” to attract the young to use dialects. They need to realize that speaking their local dialect is something they can be proud of.(但是,所有这些努力仍然不足以阻止方言的消失。一个更有效的措施是利用流行歌曲和“名人效应”等元素来吸引年轻人使用方言。他们需要意识到,说自己的方言是一件值得骄傲的事情。)”可推知,作者对于保护方言持支持态度。故选B。

13.细节理解题。根据第四段中“It was thanks to new Al audio restoration (音频修复) technology that Peter Jackson allowed the four band members to “come together” one last time.(多亏了新的人工智能音频修复技术,彼得·杰克逊才让四名乐队成员最后一次“聚在一起”)”可知,Peter Jackson使用AI技术修复了披头士乐队成员的声音。故选C。
14.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The Times in the UK said the song showed Al being used to its best advantage.(英国《泰晤士报》表示,这首歌显示了人工智能被利用到最佳状态)”可推知,《秦晤士报》对披头士乐队新发行的曲目持支持态度。故选A。

The committee agreed to let Emily lead this effort. As expected, the idea of partnering with the rival organization met with opposition. The other group, protective of their previous hard work, was initially reluctant to accept Emily’s proposal. They worried that their unique voice would be lost in the mix, insisting that their event should stand alone. Emily, unshaken, continued to highlight the benefits of partnership, emphasizing the potential for more donations and increased community involvement. It was a tough sell, but Emily’s determination and the sound reasoning of her plan gradually broke through their initial reluctance.
After days of negotiation, Emily finally got a positive reply. They had come to realize the value in Emily’s proposal and agreed to collaborate. The two teams began working together, pooling their resources and expertise to create a single, unified event. The result was an overwhelming success, attracting a larger crowd and fostering a sense of unity among the participants. The substantial funds collected profoundly benefited both the homeless shelter and the other cause, showing that when organizations put aside their differences and worked together towards a common goal, the power of collaboration could make a real difference.
