Life, it could be argued, is like a long game of blackjack. In one common version of this, each person is dealt with two playing cards. The aim is for your hand to add to 21, or as close to this as you can get. Player can either “stick” with their existing hand or “twist”— asking to be dealt another card to add to their total. The risk, of course, is that you exceed 21 and are eliminated.
This may sound far removed from everyday choices, but many of our most important life decisions boil down to such dilemmas. Should I stay put or take the leap and move house Should I remain in my job or start my own business The inherent uncertainty leaves many of us ending up staying in the status quo, never giving ourselves the chance to win big.
Perhaps we can learn a trick from “maximisers”: individuals with a strong urge to find the optimal(最佳的)outcome for every situation. They would be more willing to”twist” if their current options aren’t working. And this approach to life certainly has some advantages. For example, among a sample of students looking for work, maximisers ended up getting a 20% higher salary compared with “satisficers”, people who tend to choose the first acceptable option.
Nevertheless, in reality there are simply too many options to weigh up the pros and cons of every choice. Natural maximisers can feel so overwhelmed with the options, and they are troubled by the doubt that a superior option might be among those they did not evaluate. Perhaps as a consequence, they tend to suffer badly from feelings of regret and”fear of missing out”, which affects their overall life satisfaction.
Fortunately, a technique appears to tackle the problem. The strategy is known as psychological distancing, which is akin to taking a fly-on-the-wall view of things. There are many ways to apply it. You might imagine you are advising a close friend in a similar dilemma, for example, or you could try to predict how you would view the decision and its consequences at some time in the mid-to-distant future.
Previous research has shown that psychological distancing techniques contribute to greater intellectual humility, which encourages people to consider more sources of information before coming to a judgement. This approach can also help us deal with the consequences of our big decisions. When using psychological distancing techniques, people are better able to regulate their emotions— which we must do to process the choices we have made. In addition, discussing life’s disappointments from such a distanced perspective helps us extract meaning from our experiences. That should prevent you becoming immersed in the feelings of regret that can follow stick-or-twist decisions.
As everyone knows, Lady Luck won’t work in your favour all the time, no matter how smart your decision making has been. Nevertheless, by applying this psychological research, you can make the most of your hand— and take greater pleasure in the thrill of the game.

Nearly every weekend this summer, a rising senior and small business owner, Vic Cohen together with his schoolmates could be found with their stand decorated with a variety of handmade chainmail jewelry
Cohen only began making chainmail jewelry in April with no previous experience in jewelry making. Stuck on campus until long past the end of the semester, Cohen found themselves looking for something to keep them occupied, which led to them searching for courses online and on Pinterest after getting initial inspiration from Etsy. "This was the first time I learned how to like an actual craft and like multiple dimensions of it, " Cohen said. "This also lighted my passion for business. This idea originally started out only for my friends. And because I wanted them to get cool jewelry without having to break the bank."
Cohen began selling their jewelry to friends and on Instagram, and eventually at art markets: around town. These markets have also been Cohen's entry into Rochester's dynamic art community attracting University of Rochester students, students on other campuses, and young professionals in the city. This has allowed them to learn from each other and improve on their art by learning different skills and employing different tips and tricks in their pieces. Cohen has connected with Rochester Institute of Technology and Middlesex Community College students, learning that the former institution has a jewelry- making major and meeting students within the major. "They've praised my work, which is absolutely crazy, " Cohen said. "This has unintentionally been a great way to make friends." These connections led to them getting the chance to host a beginner chainmail class themselves. "I know I'm capable of teaching other people and it's really fun to share my love for this because as a STEM major, I get so wrapped up in it, and being able to find a way out is nice."

I was a volunteer with the city of Milpitas, and was studying at mission college. One night after going to class, I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito(墨西哥卷饼) restaurant. I got my burrito and started to head for my car when I was approached by a homeless man. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I asked him to follow me back into the burrito restaurant to order. He was ashamed of the way he looked and said he did not want to go in there. But I insisted. When he finally followed me in, the people behind the counter refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After we argued over it for a while, they finally gave in. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at a table. I asked him to order whatever he wanted. But he only ordered a burrito.
For someone who has been on the fringes(边缘) of society, he was very surprised at my generosity. But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. You had to be there to see the look in his face. It reminded me when I was young and my mom brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, chocolate and goodies that we were about to eat. I think he felt special, like he was getting attention, something that I could see he hadn’t experienced in a long time.
I often think about this story because, to me, it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them. It’s more about giving them the respect and dignity(尊严) of being a human being and allowing them to feel good about themselves.

10.Why does the author mention his birthday in paragraph 3
A.To demonstrate his wonderful childhood.
B.To stress the importance of enjoying a feast.
C.To contrast his life with that of the homeless man.
D.To describe the happy feelings of the homeless man.
11.What is the thing really worth doing according to the author
A.Treating others with respect.
B.Ridding the world of hunger.
C.Encouraging acts of kindness.
D.Paying attention to the homeless.
When Sherlock Holmes asked Dr. Watson to consider the previous night’s “curious incident” involving a dog, Watson replied that nothing had happened. “That was the curious incident,” observed Holmes. This clue enabled Holmes to conclude that the murderer must have been someone familiar to the victim’s dog because the dog did not bark when the murderer appeared. Most people would miss this important clue because, like Watson, they pay little attention to non-occurrences.
In everyday life, consumers often make decisions based on brief descriptions of products in advertisements and other one-sided promotional materials. Why are people willing to make decisions based on limited information People are accustomed to using whatever evidence is readily available to them — however insufficient — at the expense of other information that persuaders fail to mention. Omission neglect (insensitivity to unmentioned options, features, issues, or possibilities) is particularly problematic given the nature of the world. Information describing alternatives — such as job applicants, consumer products, medical procedures, and decision outcomes — varies dramatically across situations. Some alternatives are discussed at considerable length, while others are described only briefly. To some extent, nearly everything is described in terms of limited or incomplete evidence.
Research on omission neglect has shown that people often fail to detect the absence of important missing information, and this leads people to form strong beliefs on the basis of weak evidence. Strong beliefs are beliefs that are overly extreme and held with a high degree of confidence. In general, people should form more extreme beliefs when more rather than less information is available. However, when people are insensitive to omissions, people form extreme beliefs regardless of how little is known about a topic, according to Sanbonmatsu’s conclusion.
The results of research published by Sanbonmatsu suggest that omission neglect occurs because missing information is not very noticeable. To the extent that this is true, omission neglect should be reduced when the importance of missing information is enhanced. More moderate judgments are made when people are sensitive to omissions due to a clear warning that the given information is incomplete, due to very high levels of prior knowledge about the target object or issue, or due to comparison processes that make it painfully obvious that some objects are described by a large amount of information whereas others are described by a small amount.
12.What led Sherlock Holmes to his conclusion
A.Watson' As peculiar reply.
B.His observation of the victim.
C.The absence of the dog's barking.
D.The time of the murderer' s appearance.
13.What do people tend to do when making decisions
A.Analyse the persuaders.
B.Gather more information.
C.Assess the influence of the decisions.
D.Fail to notice what is unmentioned.
14.What is Sanbonmatsu’s conclusion
A.More information builds confidence.
B.Weak evidence can lead to strong beliefs.
C.Most people like to challenge themselves.
D.It is hard to know everything about a topic.
15.What does the last paragraph intend to do
A.Debate about the truth of information.
B.Warn people against incomplete information.
C.Increase the awareness of missing information.
D.Improve people' s ability to compare information.
Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people, choice gives birth to anxiety. Interested in the idea “too many choices are dizzy”. I have been conducting an experiment. 16
When presented with a menu in a restaurant, I’ll only consider the first few options on each page. I know, it sounds crazy. 17 I used to read the menu a long time instead of sitting back and talking to my dining companion. These days I quickly select the best-sounding dishes and then chat and eat. In doing so, I find myself trying new things. The other night, for example, I ordered a smoked chicken salad. If I had permitted myself to glance further down the list, this would never have happened. But guess what 18 So limiting my choices can sometimes lead me to a wider range of experiences.
19 I can now access many films and TV series, yet after ten minutes of looking through apps and menus, I will more often than not find myself watching whatever Channel 4 has scheduled at 9 pm. So before I even turn on the TV, I ask myself: what do I want to watch I think of a program. Then I just watch it.
This devotion to a simpler set of possibilities came in handy when our summer holiday to America was COVID-canceled. I didn’t go through a million TripAdvisor reviews for the best replacements. I simply went on Airbnb, saw what in England was still available and immediately booked the one I could afford. 20 And now I can actually focus on enjoying our holiday.

The cheongsam is the classic dress for Chinese women, which combines the elegance of Chinese tradition 36 unique elements of style and fully sets off the beauty of the female shape.
The name “cheongsam”, 37 (mean) simply “long dress”, entered the English vocabulary from the dialect of China’s Guangdong Province. In other parts of the country including Beijing, however, it is known as “qipao”, 38 has a history behind it.
After the early Manchu(满族) rulers came to China, the Manchu women normally wore a one-piece dress which came to be called “qipao. 39 the rule of the Qing Dynasty was ended in 1911, the female dress survived the political change. In 40 1920s, the cheongsam experienced a change with the influence of Western styles, including its length being shortened, which allowed the beauty of the female body 41 (display) fully. Starting from the 1940s, cheongsam became closer-fitting and more practical and in summer, women wore sleeveless dresses. It didn’t become standard female clothes until the 1960s.

There’s an image of big cities as soulless places, where everyone appears to be looking out only for themselves. However, my own experiences tell a different story. During some of the most challenging times of my life, when I was struggling to find proper housing, I worked as an artist on the street. For years, I played my flute (长笛) there, and in doing so, I discovered the natural kindness of people. They showed compassion without expecting anything in return, driven purely by human goodwill.
This profound realization took hold when I was 21, living in Sydney. I worked at a local pub, feeling lost and directionless. Amid the chaos of my life, playing the flute was my only constant source of comfort. Looking back, my connection with the flute began when I was 16. Earning a mere $2.35 an hour at the supermarket, I saved for two long years to buy it. Every day after work, playing the flute became my way of processing the day’s emotions.
One day, while working at the pub, someone asked me what I was doing that night. “I’m going to be playing the flute at —” I started to say, but then it struck me: I had forgotten to pick up my flute when I got off the train. Panic set in immediately. In a fit of frustration, I threw the plastic chair I was holding across the room.
I rushed to the train station, hoping someone had handed in my flute. No luck. Still, I left my number, clinging to the slim hope that it would turn up. Convinced that it was gone forever — after all, I hadn’t even written my name on the case — I spent the next week drowning in self-blame, drinking heavily and feeling sorry for myself.
Then, out of the blue, I received a call from CityRail. They had my flute. I hurried to the lost property office at Central Station. And there it was, among all the other lost items.

【分析】本文是篇夹叙夹议文。作者通过自己的几个亲身经历诠释了一种生活方式:少即是多;
16.根据上文“Interested in the idea “too many choices are dizzy”. I have been conducting an experiment.( 对“选择太多让人头晕”的想法感兴趣。我一直在进行一项实验。)”以及下文作者的几个亲身经历,都是限制了选择,把事情简单化带来的好处,所以设空处应该是作者得出的一个结论,故选项D“它诠释了一种生活方式:少即是多。”符合本文主旨,故选D;
17.根据上文“When presented with a menu in a restaurant, I’ll only consider the first few options on each page.(当我在餐厅拿到菜单时,我只会考虑每页的前几个选项。)”以及下文“I used to read the menu a long time instead of sitting back and talking to my dining companion.(我过去常常花很长时间看菜单,而不是坐下来和我的用餐伙伴聊天。)”可推断设空处说的是在餐厅点菜只看菜单每页的前几项的好处,不用在菜单上浪费时间,而是留出时间和用餐伙伴聊天,故C选项“但这实际上是一种解放。”符合题意,而选项中it指代的正是只看菜单每页的前几项这件事,故选C;
18.根据上文“The other night, for example, I ordered a smoked chicken salad. If I had permitted myself to glance further down the list, this would never have happened. But guess what (例如,有一天晚上,我点了一份烟熏鸡肉沙拉。如果我允许自己往下看,这一切都不会发生。但你猜怎么着?)”可知作者尝试了一份新菜,再根据下文“So limiting my choices can sometimes lead me to a wider range of experiences.(所以限制我的选择有时可以让我有更广泛的经验。)”可知这道菜给了作者不同的体验,选项A“它很美味。”符合语境,故选A;
根据下文“I can now access many films and TV series, yet after ten minutes of looking through apps and menus, I will more often than not find myself watching whatever Channel 4 has scheduled at 9 pm. 【详解】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了中国旗袍的特点、词汇出处、演变和流行。
【详解】
36. 考查连词。句意:旗袍是中国女性的经典服饰,将中国传统的优雅与独特的风格元素相结合,充分衬托出女性形体之美。combine sth. with sth. 故填with。
故填which。
根据句意,“the rule of the Qing Dynasty was ended in 1911”和“the female dress survived the political change”之间是让步关系,空处引导让步状语从句,且位于句首,所以应用连词although/though/while,意为“尽管”。 故填Although/Though/While。
故填the。
allow sth./sb. to do sth. 根据句意,the beauty of the female body和display之间是逻辑上的动宾关系,所以应用不定式的被动形式。故填to be displayed。
故填be worn。
Ladies and gentlemen,
Our group firmly believes that learning foreign languages remains essential even in the era of artificial intelligence.
Firstly, language is not just a tool for communication; it is a window into different cultures and ways of thinking. Understanding a foreign language allows us to appreciate the tiny differences and subtleties of other societies, promoting cultural empathy and global understanding. Secondly, while AI can translate languages, it cannot fully grasp the context and emotions behind human communication. Human interaction requires a level of sensitivity and adaptability that AT cannot yet replicate. Finally, foreign language skills enhance human-to-human interaction.
Therefore, learning foreign languages continues to be a valuable skill in our increasingly interconnected world.
Thanks for your listening!

One possible version:
As I went to grab it, the guards there asked for my ID. I froze in my tracks, a wave of panic washing over me. I stammered, telling them I didn’t have any ID on me, and that getting it would be a huge hassle. Despair filled my eyes as I pleaded with them, explaining how precious this flute was to me. It wasn’t just an instrument; it was my connection to a better time, a source of comfort in my otherwise chaotic life. But the guards said, “Well, sorry — you’ve got to have ID to get your flute back.” I stared at the flute, so close yet so out of reach, and held back the tears of frustration that threatened to spill.
Desperate and anxious, I said, “What if I play you a tune ” The guards hesitated, but then nodded. I closed my eyes and started playing Greensleeves. As the first notes filled the air, a rush of emotions surged through me. I could feel the guards’ attention on me, and for a moment, the world around us seemed to stand still. When I opened my eyes, I saw that the guards’ expressions had softened. “That’s your flute,” one of them said softly. Without hesitation, I grabbed my flute and walked away, my heart swelling with gratitude. It was a double kindness — first from the person who handed my flute in, and then the guards who broke the rules to let me take it. This experience only reaffirmed my belief in the goodness of people, even in the bustling heart of a big city.
