Kerala Literature Festival 2025 — Where Stories Come Alive By The Sea
Held from January 23 to 25, the eighth edition of the Kerala Literature Festival featured 380 sessions, 500 speakers from 15 countries, and over 600,000 participants. Some literary giants are fully engaged, sharing the knowledge of literature they’ve gathered over the years and thus enriching the experience for their audience.
Here’s what went down at Kerala Literature Festival 2025 in Kozhikode.
Day 1 started with the ‘Children’s KLF: Storytelling’ group featuring a lively discussion about the challenges of adapting literature for the screen, whether as a screenplay or a film. Participants emphasised the difficulties of adapting a good book into either form while doing justice to the original work and the audience engagement in storytelling.
Day 2 witnessed a notable session ‘Amrut: The Phenomenal Global Story of India’s First Single Malt’, in which author Sriram Devatha discussed his book, which beautifully combines a remarkable business model with one of the finest alcohol produced in India, revealing several myths surrounding the wine-making process and sharing insights with the audience.
Day 3 featured one of the most interesting sessions, ‘A Wonderland of Words’, in which Shashi Tharoor reflected on his literary journey. He discussed how language is evolving, its variations worldwide, and why this should be celebrated. He also stressed the importance of reading in the digital age.

[8分]Since young children went back to school across Sweden recently, many of their teachers have been putting a new emphasis on printed books, quiet reading time and handwriting practice, and devoting less time to tablets, independent online research and keyboarding skills.
The return to more traditional ways of learning is a response to politicians and experts questioning whether Sweden’s hyper-digitalized approach to education, including the introduction of tablets in nursery schools, had led to a decline in basic skills.
Sweden’s minister for schools, Lotta Edholm was one of the biggest critics of the all-out embrace of technology. “Sweden’s students need more textbooks,” Edholm said in March. “Physical books are important for student learning.” The minister announced in August that the government wanted to change the decision by the national agency for education to make digital devices compulsory in preschools. It plans to go further and to completely end digital learning for children under age six, the ministry has told the Associated Press.
Although Sweden’s students score above the European average for reading ability, an international assessment of fourth-grade reading levels, the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), highlighted a decline among Sweden’s children between 2016 and 2021.
In comparison, Singapore — which topped the rankings — improved its PIRLS reading scores from 576 to 587 during the same period, and England’s average reading achievement score fell only slightly, from 559 in 2016 to 558 in 2021. An overuse of screens during school lessons may cause youngsters to fall behind in core subjects, education experts say. “There’s clear scientific evidence that digital tools impair rather than enhance student learning,” Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, a highly respected medical school focused on research, said in a statement in August on the country’s national digitalization strategy in education.
“We believe the focus should return to acquiring knowledge through printed textbooks and teacher expertise, rather than acquiring knowledge primarily from freely available digital sources that have not been checked for accuracy.” the school added.

[8分]In 1910, the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a boy tasked with opening a valve (阀门) on a steam-powered water pump to release built - up pressure. His entire job was staring at the machines all day, an incredibly boring task. The “lazy” boy, however, invented an automatic release that let the pump run properly, winning his freedom — and in doing so, creating the first automatic steam engine.
Though the story may be fictional, the boy’s behavior reflects a deeper truth: When we feel lazy, we often look for easier ways, trying to improve processes and save time and effort. In other words, laziness can drive innovation.
In recent years, some psychologists and business leaders have come to grasp this insight, shifting our view of what laziness really means. Walter Chrysler is said to have noted: “I always choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”
Our brains are naturally inclined toward laziness. Unlike our ancestors, who had to conserve energy to compete for food, flee predators, and fight, we no longer face survival as a daily concern. It might seem natural to be “lazier,” but the opposite has happened. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans now sleep less and work more than before; worker productivity has risen 400 percent since 1950. Our culture teaches us that our worth depends on how hard we work. So we push even harder to produce more.
Yet there’s a big, sad paradox: The harder we work, the less productive we become. When demands rise, we tend to push harder. But without rest and recharge, we grow less efficient, make more mistakes, and feel less engaged.
So how can we make labor more meaningful and life more fulfilling Current research in psychology and neuroscience points to valuing a wandering mind. Take breaks, let thoughts drift — learn to be idle. This week, notice downtime in your day, empty spaces on your calendar. Instead of filling them with more work, just sit on the sofa and be, as poet Mary Oliver put it, “idle and blessed.”
What is the author’s attitude to the boy opening the valve
A.Dismissive.

A.Wild imagination.
B.Unclear explanation.
C.Strange contradiction.
D.Rare phenomenon.
What is the author’s purpose writing the text
A.Compare the old and new views on laziness.
B.Criticize irresponsible attitude towards hard work.
C.Advise people to abandon the value of hard work.
D.Inspire people to stay refreshed for better work and life.
[8分]Just off the Florida Keys lies the world’s third-largest coral reef (珊瑚礁), which was once an energetic habitat for millions of plants and animals. But an outbreak of stony coral tissue loss disease threatens to destroy 20 of the 45 species found there, including larger reef-building corals.
“This disease that is burning through the Florida Keys is an unbelievable event that is happening,” said Andrew Stamper, conservation science manager at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. “It’s like a wildfire.” Stamper said that would endanger Florida’s fishing industry and food supply. “Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what is causing this,” he said.
In order to save the reef, scientists have moved some species hundreds of miles away to a lab in Orlando. Scientists work to simulate breeding (繁殖) conditions in the lab. The conditions are exactly the same as the living conditions of the coral. The work needs a lot of care, effort and attention to detail. LED lights exactly copy the sun and moon cycles. Volunteers feed the coral in water treated to mimic its real habitat.
“This essentially is a gene bank,” said Jim Kinsler, leader of SeaWorld Orlando. “We’re trying to protect the genetics of these corals so that their offspring(后代)can eventually be returned back to the Florida reef area.”
The task of relocating the lab-grown coral to the sea is also a detailed task. Kinsler, who is part of a team of private and public partners operating the Florida Coral Rescue Center, said, “It’s the first time that many of them have been involved in rescuing an entire ecosystem,”
“We think the real challenge is just growing them out to a size, so we can test them in those waters, test their disease resistance (抵抗力), and then breed the successful corals by the hundreds of thousands literally,” said Andrew Walker, president of the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
What do we know about the Florida Keys
A.It owns the world’s largest coral reef.
B.A disease broke out among people there.
C.The world’s third-largest coral reef is close to it.
D.It is now the habitat of millions of plants and animals.
What do Andrew Stamper’s words mean
A.The root of the disease is unclear.
B.A wildfire broke out in the Florida Keys.
C.The disease will spread across the Earth.
D.The disease has caused a great loss to the locals.
What does the underlined word “simulate” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Copy. B.Contrast. C.Escape. D.Feature.
What is the purpose of the research according to Andrew Walker
A.To restore the coral in the lab.
B.To sell the coral in the normal size.
C.To make more people involved in protecting the ecosystem.
D.To produce masses of disease-resistant coral back to the sea.

It was August, the busiest season for tourism. Oliver Holland, the owner of a restaurant in a scenic spot, was expecting as many as 500 tourists to visit and eat there each day. With a joyful heart, he jumped into his truck and set off to his restaurant. Before he turned onto the main road he had to go through an eleven-kilometer tunnel. It was the only access to his restaurant from his home.
Two years earlier a truck caught fire inside the tunnel and its closure for repairs was a huge blow to his business. When the road to his restaurant was blocked, the stream of tourists stopped. Although it was difficult, he managed to keep his staff on.
“This year will be a perfect year.” Oliver thought.
Inside the tunnel everything went normal. But when he was near the end, Oliver spotted an unusual light 50 meters ahead. Then he saw something burning.
He stopped in his tracks and saw a tour bus on fire! At the back where the engine was, dozens of tourists were running towards him.
“They’re going the wrong way.” Oliver thought, knowing the tunnel exit was just 500 meters ahead. Then he realized the bus was now burning so fiercely that it was impossible for them to get around it.
As a former volunteer firefighter, Oliver first had to raise the alarm. “A bus is on fire Stop the traffic!” he texted with shaking hands, while thick smoke pouring out of the bus kept blowing in his direction under the influence of the strong wind. In no time it would black out the tunnel, choking and blinding anyone inside it. There was no chance for the poor tourists to survive. Every minute counted.

根据第二段“The return to more traditional ways of learning is a response to politicians and experts questioning whether Sweden’s hyper-digitalized approach to education, including the introduction of tablets in nursery schools, had led to a decline in basic skills.(回归更传统的学习方式是对政治家和专家的回应,他们质疑瑞典的超数字化教育方式,包括在幼儿园引入平板电脑,是否导致了基本技能的下降)”可知,瑞典学校回归纸质书是为了避免儿童基本技能的可能下降。故选D。
故选A。
根据最后一段““We believe the focus should return to acquiring knowledge through printed textbooks and teacher expertise, rather than acquiring knowledge primarily from freely available digital sources that have not been checked for accuracy.” the school added.(“我们认为,重点应该回归到通过印刷教科书和教师专业知识获取知识,而不是主要从未经准确性检查的免费数字资源获取知识。”学校补充道)”可知,卡罗林斯卡学院可能会同意来自数字工具的知识可能不可靠。故选B。
7.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Since young children went back to school across Sweden recently, many of their teachers have been putting a new emphasis on printed books, quiet reading time and handwriting practice, and devoting less time to tablets, independent online research and keyboarding skills.(自从瑞典各地的孩子们最近回到学校以来,他们的许多老师都把新的重点放在了印刷书籍、安静的阅读时间和书写练习上,减少了花在平板电脑、独立在线研究和键盘技能上的时间)”结合文章主要说明了瑞典学校回归纸质书是为了避免儿童基本技能的可能下降,引用了各界人士对此的看法和态度。 故选A。
根据第二段“Though the story may be fictional, the boy’s behavior reflects a deeper truth: When we feel lazy, we often look for easier ways, trying to improve processes and save time and effort. In other words, laziness can drive innovation. (虽然这个故事可能是虚构的,但这个男孩的行为反映了一个更深层次的事实:当我们感到懒惰时,我们通常会寻找更简单的方法,试图改善流程,节省时间和精力。换句话说,懒惰可以推动创新。)”可推断作者对男孩这种看似懒惰实则创新的行为是支持的。故选B。
9.推理判断题。根据第四段“Our brains are naturally inclined toward laziness.
根据划线词下文“The harder we work, the less productive we become. (我们工作越努力,效率却越低)”可知,工作越努力,效率却越低,是一种奇怪的矛盾情况,所以“paradox”意思是“Strange contradiction (奇怪的矛盾)”,故选C。
11.推理判断题。文章先阐述懒惰能驱动创新,接着指出人们工作中努力却低效的问题,再根据最后一段“So how can we make labor more meaningful and life more fulfilling Current research in psychology and neuroscience points to valuing a wandering mind. Take breaks, let thoughts drift — learn to be idle. This week, notice downtime in your day, empty spaces on your calendar. Instead of filling them with more work, just sit on the sofa and be, as poet Mary Oliver put it, “idle and blessed.” (那么,我们怎样才能让劳动更有意义,让生活更充实呢?目前心理学和神经科学的研究表明,人们重视走神。休息一下,让思绪飘散——学会闲散。这周,注意你一天中的休息时间,日历上的空白时间。与其用更多的工作填满它们,不如坐在沙发上,像诗人玛丽·奥利弗所说的那样,“悠闲而幸福”)”可推断作者目的是激励人们保持精神饱满,以获得更好的工作和生活。故选D。
【答案】12.C 13.A 14.A 15.D
根据第一段“Just off the Florida Keys lies the world’s third-largest coral reef(珊瑚礁), which was once an energetic habitat for millions of plants and animals. But an outbreak of stony coral tissue loss disease threatens to destroy 20 of the 45 species found there, including larger reef-building corals. (佛罗里达群岛附近有世界第三大珊瑚礁,这里曾经是数百万动植物的栖息地。但是,石珊瑚组织丧失疾病的爆发威胁着那里45种珊瑚中的20种,包括更大的造礁珊瑚。)”可知,世界第三大珊瑚礁在佛罗里达群岛附近,爆发疾病的是珊瑚,珊瑚礁区有数百万动植物。故选C项。
13.推理判断题。根据第二段“‘This disease that is burning through the Florida Keys is an unbelievable event that is happening,' said Andrew Stamper, conservation science manager at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. ‘It’s like a wildfire.’ Stamper said that would endanger Florida’s fishing industry and food supply. ‘Unfortunately, we do not know exactly what is causing this,’ he said. (迪士尼动物、科学与环境保护科学经理斯坦珀说,‘正在佛罗里达群岛肆虐的这种疾病是一件令人难以置信的事情。它就像野火一样。’斯坦珀说,这将危及佛罗里达州的渔业和食品供应。他说,‘不幸的是,我们并不确切知道是什么导致了这种情况。’)”可知,珊瑚组织丧失疾病的根源尚不清楚。故选A项。
根据第三段“In order to save the reef, scientists have moved some species hundreds of miles away to a lab in Orlando. Scientists work to simulate breeding(繁殖)conditions in the lab. The conditions are exactly the same as the living conditions of the coral. The work needs a lot of care, effort and attention to detail. LED lights exactly copy the sun and moon cycles. Volunteers feed the coral in water treated to mimic its real habitat.
根据倒数第三段“‘This essentially is a gene bank,’ said Jim Kinsler, leader of SeaWorld Orlando. ‘We’re trying to protect the genetics of these corals so that their offspring (后代) can eventually be returned back to the Florida reef area.’ (奥兰多海洋世界的负责人金斯勒说,这实际上是一个基因库,‘我们正在努力保护这些珊瑚的基因,这样它们的后代最终就能回到佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。’)”可知,科学家们保护珊瑚基因,希望能使他们的后代重返佛罗里达的珊瑚礁区。最后一段“‘We think the real challenge is just growing them out to a size, so we can test them in those waters, test their disease resistance (抵抗力), and then breed the successful corals by the hundreds of thousands literally,’ said Andrew Walker, president of the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida. 44.【答案】范文
Should We Explore the Sea
Our class recently engaged in a fiery debate regarding sea exploration. Supporters argue that the unexplored oceans may hold solutions to energy crises and medical breakthroughs. However, opponents emphasize ecological risks, pointing out that human activities may disrupt fragile ecosystems.
I firmly support regulated exploration. Firstly, exploring the sea helps discover new energy sources to replace the polluting fossil fuels. Additionally, sea creatures may hold cures for diseases we currently find difficult to treat. Most importantly, understanding the sea allows us to protect it better while using its resources wisely.
The future lies not in choosing between exploration and protection, but in harmonizing both through scientific wisdom and global cooperation.

It was a race against death. As soon as the tourists flooded into the truck, he sped away.
After a 2 minutes’desperate drive, finally they arrived at the exit of the tunnel! What a narrow escape! All of them breathed with relief and thanked Oliver. They felt that without him, they would have been choked to death in the tunnel. However, his eyebrows were knitted into a deep frown. Thanks to his message, the firefighters arrived just in time to put the fire out and the tunnel would be reopened within hours.
