Contrary to most boys, I’ve never had a problem saying “no”. No to let my desk neighbor borrow a pencil. No to just take “one sip” (尝一口) of a drink I didn’t want. Saying “no” to everything just felt natural, and the two letters slid off my tongue so well that eventually people stopped asking me to do things. My thought process was simple: If something wasn’t within my comfort zone, I should avoid it.
One of my favorite poems from the Bible has always been, “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future”, but I never actually laughed or did anything without fearing what would happen next. So, with a sudden urge, I decided to start saying “yes” as long as it wasn’t illegal and didn’t violate my own moral code.
This one word brought all kinds of new experiences where I found myself in a bar playing late one night with new friends and sitting in the front row at SoulCycle — a nice change from my back row, corner spot. Of course this change has had both good and bad outcomes, ranging from fun memories to lots of work and making semi - costly mistakes, leading to the unavoidable blames from my boss.
Remember when we were six and the whole world was ours We colored on the walls and slid into the cookie jar, fearless and unconcerned. We said “yes” to whatever we felt like doing, and then we became adults. Our dreams and sense of adventure faded away with our imaginary friends.
Reality is that we all have dreams, but most of us make excuses for not pursuing them. It’s more like a matter of inertia (惰性), of just ignoring the dreams, of maintaining the present situation. “No” keeps everything predictable. But you can break out of your comfort zone and get more out of life through the simple power of “yes”.
4.Why did people no longer ask the author for help
A.He had no ability to offer help. B.They had no confidence in him.
C.They already knew his response. D.He disliked to relate with others.
5.What did the author learn from the poem in the Bible
A.Tolerating uncertainty was a must.
B.It was necessary to stay cautious.
C.What was not banned was allowed.
D.Moral principles could be adjusted.
6.What did saying “yes” bring to the author
A.Laughter from his boss. B.Vital mistakes at work.
C.Friends and higher status. D.More tasks and less focus.
7.Which of the following best summarizes the passage
A.Children are more brave than adults.
B.Life gives back to those who dare to try.
C.Golden days in childhood are precious.
D.Dreams fuel one’s courage to take risks.
B
Every single person has a story to share, and a growing number of older Australians are choosing to record their life memories through short films. While writing memoirs can take years, creating a life story film takes just a few hours, far more vivid than writing or looking through photo albums.
Television producer and director Danika Armytage, known for producing shows like The Block, River Cottage Australia, and The Living Room, has launched a company called Big Stories Little Films, which specializes in creating life legacy films. Since its foundation in 2024, Danika has been busy bringing people's stories to life in films.
“Our films tell life stories, capture family legacies, and allow wisdom to be passed down through generations,” Danika explains. “They are often a gift for family members—it's like a film heirloom (传家宝) to pass down through generations.”
Danika was inspired to start the company after filming an interview with her own grandmother, Halimah, before she passed away. “The film became priceless to my family, especially after granny died. Now my own children can meet their great-grandmother and feel connected to our family history, even though they have never met her in person. Memories fade, but films are a time capsule (时间胶囊) that safeguards stories, keeping them as vivid as if you're sitting at the kitchen bench hearing them directly from your grandparent.”
“One of my favorite films is about brother and sister Raymond and Jennice Kersh, now in their 80s, who once ran Sydney's iconic restaurant Edna's Table, pioneering the use of local ingredients. Their story captures the living history of growing up in Pyrmont in the 1940s, where everyone was poor but no one was lonely,” Danika recalls.
“Another of my favorite films is the story of John French, a fifth-generation sheep farmer from Tumut, NSW, who traced his family history back to 1840 when his ancestors arrived from Scotland. At 79, he still works on the same land. His life story film was a gift from his daughter.”
8.Why do more older Australians prefer to make life story films ( )
A.Films are more expensive and celebrated.
B.Written memoirs are more vivid than films.

10.What do the stories of Raymond and Jennice Kersh and John French have in common ( )
A.They both involve creating new cooking methods.
B.They both focus on running Sydney's iconic restaurants.

Maureen Evelyn's life changed when she applied to Harvard—not to get in, but to get rejected to build confidence. “When I was in high school, I feared failure,” says Evelyn. “This fear made me lack confidence, because I was always trying to be perfect. I decided to stop this and just try to get told ‘no’ and realize there's no physical pain associated.”
Is there a better way to get rejected than applying to Harvard, a school that accepts less than 4% of its applicants Plus, she figured, the application would only take three hours. What did she have to lose
She applied as a joke and was shocked to be waitlisted. Getting waitlisted by Harvard might be demoralizing for many, but for Evelyn, it marked a turning point. Her fear of rejection had held her back, but now she saw possibilities.
“It kind of clicked in my brain that we hold ourselves back from these crazy opportunities because we don't think we're going to get them,” she says. “Once waitlisted by Harvard, I thought, wow, this could change my life.” Afterward, Evelyn sought more rejections. She dined with strangers, got interviewed on TV, posed in a fancy car, and applied to a famous modeling agency. The agency politely declined, saying she looked “too otherworldly”. Who knew rejection could make you feel so good
Psychotherapist (心理治疗师) Stephanie Sarkis says rejection therapy (治疗法) is effective when done strategically, but she wants people to keep in mind that the goal is to experience rejection—not to accidentally land great opportunities. Everyone faces rejection; it's part of life.
Evelyn has been told “no” countless times. Most memorably, construction workers refused her request to use their jackhammers (手提钻) because she wasn't dressed properly. Actually doing these things wasn't the point. It was her bravery to ask that made all the difference.
12.Why did Evelyn apply to Harvard ( )
A.To show her ability and confidence.
B.To boost confidence by facing rejection.
C.To experience physical pain indirectly.
D.To gain admission into a famous university.
13.What does the underlined word “demoralizing” in paragraph 3 mean ( )
A.Discouraging. B.Special.
C.Cheerful. D.Doubtful.
14.What is the main goal of rejection therapy ( )
A.To avoid potential rejection.
B.To show rejection isn't painful.
C.To go through rejection.
D.To obtain great opportunities by chance.
15.What can we learn from Evelyn's story ( )
A.Rejection is painless and avoidable.
B.Asking bravely matters most.
C.Success comes easily if you try.
D.Fear of rejection never holds you back.

Wilma never expected to become an excellent runner, especially after a disease weakened her left leg and foot when she was five. The condition made it difficult for her to walk and play, forcing her to stay home while her peers attended nursery and primary schools.Whenever she saw the other kids having fun outside, she felt deeply sorry for herself.
While doctors treated her weak leg and she learned how to walk again, her parents homeschooled her.Local teachers often came by to give her picture books to read. One of her favorites was Dick and Jane, and she often wondered if she would ever run like the main characters.
Every Monday, Wilma and her mom took a bus to the hospital, where the doctors and nurses arranged exercises for Wilma to strengthen her muscles. The exercises were physically demanding and pushed Wilma to her limits, leaving her exhausted and in pain. The frustration built up inside her as she struggled to complete each exercise while the other kids of her age were playing freely outside. She couldn’t understand why this was her reality, and the pain caused by her exercises made her feel even more isolated.
Fortunately, this hard work finally paid off. When Wilma was eight, she was strong enough to be fitted with a metal brace (支架) that supported her left leg.Using it, Wilma could finally walk by herself and go to school with other kids. All were happy about this progress except Wilma.Actually, Wilma hated wearing it.The brace was uncomfortable, and she had to wear it with heavy shoes that made her stand out.
“What will the other kids say ” she shouted to her mom.“I don’t want to look different!”
Her mom felt worried but still tried to cheer her up.“You won’t have to wear it forever, dear.Just keep exercising to make your leg stronger!” The word “exercising” fueled Wilma’s anger even more.It was a term that had become synonymous with (等同于……的) pain and struggles. She had had enough of exercising! Wilma went into her room and slammed (砰地关上) the door.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
With clouds on her face, Wilma sat down at her table, her eyes falling on the book Dick and Jane.

【答案】4.C 5.A 6.D 7.B
根据第一段中“Saying “no” to everything just felt natural, and the two letters slid off my tongue so well that eventually people stopped asking me to do things.
根据第二段“One of my favorite poems from the Bible has always been, “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future”, but I never actually laughed or did anything without fearing what would happen next. So, with a sudden urge, I decided to start saying “yes” as long as it wasn’t illegal and didn’t violate my own moral code. 故选A。
根据第三段“Of course this change has had both good and bad outcomes, ranging from fun memories to lots of work and making semi - costly mistakes, leading to the unavoidable blames from my boss.
通读全文及最后一段“Reality is that we all have dreams, but most of us make excuses for not pursuing them. It’s more like a matter of inertia, of just ignoring the dreams, of maintaining the present situation. “No” keeps everything predictable. But you can break out of your comfort zone and get more out of life through the simple power of “yes”.

根据第一段中的“While writing memoirs can take years, creating a life story film takes just a few hours, far more vivid than writing or looking through photo albums.”
根据第四段中的“Danika was inspired to start the company after filming an interview with her own grandmother, Halimah, before she passed away.”

12.B
13.A
14.C
15.B
根据第一段中的“Maureen Evelyn's life changed when she applied to Harvard—not to get in, but to get rejected to build confidence.”
根据画线词所在句“Getting waitlisted by Harvard might be demoralizing for many, but for Evelyn, it marked a turning point.”和下文“Her fear of rejection had held her back, but now she saw possibilities.” 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“…, but she wants people to keep in mind that the goal is to experience rejection—not to accidentally land great opportunities.”
文章第一段提到伊夫林“求”拒绝是为了建立自信,最后一段最后一句“It was her bravery to ask that made all the difference.”
