二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共3小题)
I must have been about fourteen then, and I put away the incident from my mind with the easy carelessness of youth. But the words, Carl Walter spoke that day, came back to me years later, and ever since have been of great value to me.
Carl Walter was my piano teacher. During one of my lessons he asked how much practicing I was doing. I said three or four hours a day.
“Do you practice in long stretches, an hour at a time ”
“I try to.”
“Well, don't,” he exclaimed. “When you grow up, time won't come in long stretches. Practice in minutes, whenever you can find them five or ten before school, after lunch, between household tasks. Spread the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life.”
When I was teaching at Columbia, I wanted to write, but class periods, theme-reading, and committee meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my excuse was that I had no time. Then I remembered what Carl Walter had said. During the next week I conducted an experiment. Whenever I had five minutes unoccupied, I sat down and wrote a hundred words or so. To my astonishment, at the end of the week I had a rather large manuscript ready for revision, later on I wrote novels by the same piecemeal method. Though my teaching schedule had become heavier than ever, in every day there were idle moments which could be caught and put to use. I even took up piano—playing again, finding that the small intervals of the day provided sufficient time for both writing and piano practice.
There is an important trick in this time-using formula: you must get into your work quickly. If you have but five minutes for writing, you can't afford to waste four chewing your pencil. You must make your mental preparations beforehand, and concentrate on your task almost instantly when the time comes. Fortunately, rapid concentration is easier than most of us realize.
I admit I have never learnt how to let go easily at the end of the five or ten minutes. But life can be counted on to supply interruptions. Carl Walter has had a tremendous influence on my life. To him I owe the discovery that even very short periods of time add up to all useful hours I need, if I plunge in without delay.
4.What is the best title of this passage
A.Concentrate on Your Work.
B.Good Advice.
C.How I Became a Writer.
D.A Little at a Time.
5.Which of the following statements is true
A.The writer owes great thanks to his teacher for teaching him to work in long stretches.
B.The writer didn’t take the teacher’s words to heart at first.
C.Carl Walter has had a great influence on the writer’s life since he became a student.
D.Rapid concentration is actually more difficult than most people imagine.
6.The underlined part “counted on” can be replaced by _________.
A.expected B.concentrated C.valued D.enriched
7.We can infer that the writer _________.
A.can find sufficient time for mental preparations beforehand, so he’s devoted to work instantly
B.is always tired of interruptions in life because his teaching schedule is always heavy
C.has new books published each year however busy his teaching is
D.has new books published each year however busy his teaching is
A young woman has announced the news of her own death after a battle with cancer, while sharing her wishes for her grieving loved ones.
Daniella Thackray, a 25-year-old from Leeds, took to social media to share her heart-breaking final words, after an eight-month battle with the rare disease, cholangiocarcinoma, a type of cancer that forms in the bile ducts.
The emotional message paid tribute (致敬) to her family, fiancé Tom, and dog Leo, as she encouraged her loved ones to “enjoy the little things” in life and “cherish every moment” after she had “gone”. She wrote: “If you’re reading this, then it means I have died from my battle with cancer and my family are posting my final message on my behalf.”
“Firstly, I just want to say that not all cancers are caused by lifestyle choices, in some cases it’s genetics or unfortunately it just happens. In my case, despite me being very healthy and active, a cancer started in my bile ducts which was not caused by anything in my control and my life was never the same again.”
Despite her devastating (毁灭性的) diagnosis, she chose “not to mourn life” and made the most of her time. “So with that being said, although we can’t control what happens to us, we can control how we react. I chose not to mourn the life I was losing despite being so devastated, but to enjoy every moment I had left.” Daniella added.
Her message has already gained more than 30,000 likes, while hundreds of people rushed to leave their condolences (吊唁) to her loved ones. One person wrote, “Such courageous words from someone that I’ve never met. What a wonderful message to leave us with, may you rest in paradise.”

A.She hoped to promote research into genetically related cancers.

Mary-Jo Saunders goes to kindergarten every morning, just like many other five-year-olds in New York. Today, she is learning a poem. What is special is that it is a Chinese poem and that she is able to recite it without an accent. Soon she is going to learn Chinese handwriting too. “Learning the world’s most spoken language might give Mary-Jo a head start in her future career,” says her mother Alison. “I think it’s good for her to stretch herself by listening to and pronouncing new sounds, as well as learning to read and write Chinese characters.”
More and more ambitious parents in the world are signing their children up for Chinese classes. Keen for their sons and daughters to succeed in life, they see being fluent in a second or third language as an advantage. Learning Chinese is becoming such a global interest that the language has been included in the education systems of more than 75 countries. Over 4,000 overseas universities offer Chinese language courses and about 25 million people are learning Chinese outside China.
It is easy to understand why Chinese is becoming so popular. Learning Chinese may help people get more job opportunities. China is already a global economic power, and its influence is growing. For example, there is China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which motivates many countries along the Silk Road to cooperate more closely. It has created thousands of local jobs, many of which need people with a knowledge of Chinese. Another reason is that studying Chinese provides access to wonderful Chinese history and culture. Adam Turner, a school head teacher in the UK, cites this as one of the most appealing aspects of the recently added Chinese course. “Students love the mystery of China,” he explains. “They want to know all about its traditions, dynasties and art forms. Learning Chinese helps them see life from a new perspective and broaden their minds to the outside world.”
12.Why does Mary-Jo Saunders’s mother have her learn Chinese
A.To give her an advantage in future work.
B.To make her a top student in kindergarten.
C.To support her to grow into a poetry expert.
D.To improve her handwriting skills in general.
13.How does the writer show the global trend of learning Chinese
A.By providing data. B.By giving definitions.
C.By making comparison. D.By analyzing cause and effect.
14.What can be inferred from Adam Turner’s words
A.Learning Chinese can ensure a promising future.
B.Spreading Chinese language and culture is necessary.
C.Studying Chinese can help develop cultural awareness.
D.Starting a new Chinese learning program has been an appeal.
15.What could be the best title for the text
A.Global popularity of learning Chinese. B.How Mary-Jo Saunders Learns Chinese.
C.The Importance of being ambitious parents. D.How China’s Belt and Road Initiative Progresses.

The Poster Contest
Shawn had been working on his entry for the school’s poster contest for weeks. The topic of the contest was recycling, and the winner would receive the honor of having his or her poster displayed all around the school. This was a big event and he couldn’t afford to miss it. And Shawn was sure his was the best in the class-certainly better than Neil’s!
Neil and Shawn were in the same class and the two boys competed in everything, and their test scores and grades were just about equal. They almost never spoke to each other, but everyone in the class knew they were competitors. One thing Shawn excelled at, though, was art.
His poster, which showed a garbage pile threatening to crush the school, looked really good. The only problem was the slogan, which was a little boring. It read, “Recycle.”
Mr. Wu evaluated all the posters carefully and said, “These are all excellent, but there are two entries that really stand out.” Shawn grinned as Mr. Wu held up his poster and the class clapped. But then Mr. Wu held up Neil’s poster, too. The artwork wasn’t great, Shawn saw, but the words written across the top were powerful. They read, “It’s Your Planet-Recycle It!” Even Shawn had to admit it was a good slogan.
Mr. Wu announced that the winner should be decided by a public vote. But their competition ended in a tie(平局). It was really a hard decision, for they both did a good job in the designing, each with their own unique strong points.
Shawn walked out of the school, with his head and shoulders hanging down. He knew the chance that his poster would be exhibited was dimming. When he looked up, he saw Neil walking alone a few steps ahead, his face stiffening with worry. He cast Shawn a look, but didn’t say a single word.

【详解】
4.主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“Carl Walter has had a tremendous influence on my life. To him I owe the discovery that even very short periods of time add up to all useful hours I need, if I plunge in without delay.”( Carl Walter对我的生活有很大影响。
根据第六段的“For two years I got practically nothing down on paper, and my excuse was that I had no time.”(两年来,论文没写。到最后,我的借口是没有时间。)由此可知,作者一开始并没有把老师的话放在心上。故选B。

7.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“You must make your mental preparations beforehand, and concentrate on your task almost instantly”(首先你要事先“头脑准备”好,其次就是立即专注到你的任务上),可以判断出作者要想着自己的工作,一有时间就着手。故选A。
