B
Returning to a book you've read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There's a welcome familiarity—but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don't change, people do. And that's what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It's true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it's all about the present. It's about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually. The first, which I take to reading every spring, is Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast.Published in 1964, it's his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time.Another is Annie Dillard's Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortázar's Save Twilight:Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortázar.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author's work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it's you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
1.Why does the author like rereading
A.It evaluates the writer reader relationship.
B.It's a window to a whole new world.
C.It's a substitute for drinking with a friend.
D.It extends the understanding of oneself.
2.What do we know about the book A Moveable Feast
A.It's a brief account of a trip.
B.It's about Hemingway's life as a young man.
C.It's a record of a historic event.
D.It's about Hemingway's friends in Paris.
3.What does the underlined word “currency” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.Debt. B.Reward.
C.Allowance. D.Face value.
4.What can we infer about the author from the text
A.He loves poetry.
B.He's an editor.
C.He's very ambitious.
D.He teaches reading.
The last time I happened to find myself in Los Angeles, I did what every first-time visitor must do: I went to the world’s most fashionable grocery store only to stare at it in wonder. Those of you familiar with Erewhon will already know exactly what I’m talking about. For those who don’t: Erewhon is a high-end celebrity-beloved supermarket that sells such things as $19 smoothies(奶昔). TikTokers routinely flood into the store to spend small fortunes on fancy snacks and film themselves unpacking their “hauls(战利品)”.
Erewhon is also, you might have noticed, a literary reference. The brand is named after a 19th-century satirical(讽刺的) novel by Samuel Butler about a society full of beautiful people, where crime is treated tolerantly and considered a “sickness”, but poverty and illness are criminalised. In Erewhon, people go to great lengths to appear healthy.
What would Butler have made of an over-fancy supermarket, filled with influencers desperate to see and be seen, being named after his book I couldn’t tell you: I wandered the corridors of Erewhon looking for something fascinating but only came out with a small piece of bread.
I can tell you this, though: Americans, particularly Gen Z, seem to have an unfillable appetite for treating themselves to upmarket snacks. “TikTok creators have brought Little Treat Culture into fashion, and we’re on board,” Whole Foods writes in its roundup of 2024 food trends. Little Treat Culture is exactly what it sounds like: rewarding yourself with lovely little things, such as an extremely Instagrammable $19 smoothie, just for existing in these difficult times.
While these little luxuries aren’t always food-related, groceries have a common category for a relatively affordable luxury. And not just in the US: recent research shows that consumers are a lot more likely to say their “recent splurge(挥霍) purchase” was food or drink rather than personal care. A survey similarly found groceries to be the “new biggest splurge category”. Snack-makers are paying close attention and cashing in by designing more upmarket, individually packaged luxuries.
5.What do we know about Erewhon
A.Its main consumers are newcomers. B.It gives special rights to TikTokers.
C.Its pricing for goods is relatively high. D.It secures promotions from celebrities.
6.How did the author feel after shopping in Erewhon
A.He was quite confused. B.He was somewhat shocked.
C.He was a bit disappointed. D.He was extremely worn out.
7.What trend does Little Treat Culture represent
A.A sign of TikTok boom. B.A focus on healthy food.
C.A desire for expensive meals. D.A method of rewarding oneself.
8.What does the last paragraph suggest
A.People are spending less on affordable luxury goods.
B.Consumers prefer personal care items to food in life.
C.Luxury brands are planning to conduct a similar survey.
D.More well-packaged luxurious snacks will enter the market.
The air is thin and we have to rest several times on the short hike from camp. To our left, snow covered mountains disappear into clouds that seem almost close enough to touch. On the plain in front of us, we can just make out a herd of graceful animals. This is why we’re here—to observe Tibetan antelopes.
Tibetan antelopes live on the plains of Xizang, Xinjiang, and Qinghai. Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I’m struck by their beauty. I’m also reminded of the danger they were in. They were hunted, illegally, for their valuable fur.
My guide is Zhaxi, a villager from Changtang. He works at the Changtang National Nature Reserve. The reserve is a shelter for the animals and plants of northwestern Xizang. To Zhaxi, the land is sacred and protecting the wildlife is a way of life. “We’re not trying to save the animals,” he says. “Actually, we’re trying to save ourselves.”
The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope. The population dropped by more than 50 percent. Hunters were shooting antelopes to make profits. Their habitats were becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built.
In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection: Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains.
The measures were effective. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope was removed from the endangered species list. The government, however, does not intend to stop the protection programmes, since the threats to the Tibetan antelope have not yet disappeared.
In the evening, I drink a cup of tea and watch the stars. I think about the antelopes and what Zhaxi told me. Much is being done to protect wildlife, but if we really want to save the planet, we must change our way of life. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet.
9.What’s the purpose of the author’s visit to the Xizang
A.He wants to go on a hike.
B.He wants to observe Tibetan antelopes.
C.He wants to see beautiful scenery in that place.
D.He wants to climb mountains that soar into the clouds.
10.Which of the following places is NOT the habitat of the Tibetan antelope
A.The plains of Xizang. B.The plains of Qinghai.
C.The plains of Xinjiang. D.The mountainous area of Xizang.
11.What can be inferred from the last but one paragraph
A.The threats to the Tibetan antelope still exist.
B.The government has stopped protecting antelopes.
C.The Tibetan antelope species is still endangered.
D.The Tibetan antelope has been moved out of the reserve.

2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Red Flag Canal’s completion, a “man-made sky river” carved along the Taihang Mountains, which is more than a hydraulic (水利的) miracle with a total of 1,250 hilltops cut, 211 tunnels dug through. 32 This 1,500km water system ended centuries of drought in Linxian County, rewriting the destiny (命运) of about 560,000 people.
In the 1960s, facing extreme water shortages, local farmers led by Secretary Yang Gui embarked on a great endeavor. 33 Using ropes to go down cliffs and oil lamps for tunnel lighting, these determined builders hand-chiseled (用手工凿) 1.25 million cubic meters of rock. Historical records show workers consumed 55 tons of steel making drill bits alone — enough to build three Eiffel Towers. They created what UNESCO later called “a spirit of human courage”.
The construction was a symphony of sacrifice (牺牲). Engineer Wu Zutai died holding blueprints; labor hero Ren Yangcheng was disabled during cliff repairs; volunteer Li Gaiyun lost her leg saving teammates. 34
Their stories, preserved in the channel’s museum alongside 3,000+ rusting tools, testify to Chairman Yang’s words: “This water flows with our collective soul.”
Today, the canal sustains ecosystems beyond imagination. 35 Advanced irrigation systems now water about 370,000 acres of fields, while newly planted forests prevent soil erosion. In 2023, it gained global recognition as it was included in the tentative list of World Heritage Irrigation Structures.
36 At Qingniandong Tunnel, college students reenact construction scenes through VR; livestreamers share canal stories to 20 million followers. As 85-year-old builder Wang Huimin remarks: “The spirit that moved mountains now moves young hearts.”
A.Modern technology continues to shape its development.
B.Over 80 lives were lost during the decade-long project.
C.It stands as China’s lasting symbol of collective resolve.
D.Geological challenges made the plan seem impossible.
E.Its waters now raise both crops and cultural heritage.
F.They lacked modern machinery but not determination.
G.New generations are reinventing its legacy creatively.

I've had plenty of friends throughout my life, but I always felt like I was missing that one big friendship that so many other women seemed to have. As an only child, I had always longed for a sister. As an adult, all I wanted was a true best friend to fill that vacancy.
When I was thirty-two, I was living my dream as a stay-at-home mom and then my world came crashing down. On a Tuesday afternoon in May of 2018 I was diagnosed with a stage-two cancer. My days of dates, trips to the zoo, and lazy mornings at home with my twenty-one-month-old son turned into appointments with doctors, terrifying body scans and a whole lot of uncertainty.
Over the course of eight months I got cycles of treatment. While the pain and side effects were almost unbearable, the fear and anxiety that developed were even worse. My husband and parents were an amazing support system. However, I still felt depressed because it was impossible for them to figure out what I was going through both physically and emotionally. But I couldn't expect them to. Plus, I wanted to be strong for them so that they could in turn be strong for my son. I never missed having a sister more than I did during that time.
Eventually I found myself wishing for a "cancer friend" so that I could relate to someone who knew what I was going through. I would sit in the ward and look around the room, trying to find someone to befriend. I met some wonderful people, but somehow I never connected with them. Later, I continued to try to find a "cancer friend"; but in vain. So gradually I became despondent about the potential for finding such a friend.
Unexpectedly, I found what I needed in the most unlikely places. In my son's preschool, I met with a young mum called Leah, who also had a cancer. We had much in common and became the closest friends. We sometimes compared our situation to having been to war. We went to battle for our lives and found it became easier for us to do it together.

A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year.
I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. It meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work. Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything
But one morning, my wife gave me a $10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $10 bill! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

2.B
3.B
4.A
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register.
Published in 1964, it's his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating, an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time.
The third book is Julio Cortázar's Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortázar.

根据第四段中“Little Treat Culture is exactly what it sounds like: rewarding yourself with lovely little things, such as an extremely Instagrammable $19 smoothie, just for existing in these difficult times.(Little Treat Culture顾名思义就是:用可爱的小东西奖励自己,比如一杯19美元的奶昔,非常适合在Instagram上发布,只是为了在这些困难时期生存。)”
根据最后一段中“And not just in the US: recent research shows that consumers are a lot more likely to say their ‘recent splurge(挥霍) purchase’ was food or drink rather than personal care. A survey similarly found groceries to be the ‘new biggest splurge category’. Snack-makers are paying close attention and cashing in by designing more upmarket, individually packaged luxuries.(不仅在美国:最近的研究表明,消费者更有可能说他们“最近挥霍的购买”是食物或饮料,而不是个人护理。一项调查同样发现,杂货是“新的最大消费类别”。零食制造商正密切关注并通过设计更高端、单独包装的奢侈品来获利。)”可知,消费者更倾向于在食品上挥霍,且零食制造商正设计“更高端、独立包装的奢侈品”,暗示更多此类商品将进入市场,故选D。

九、读后续写

Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness” on my mind. How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth Why was it that the jogger gave me the money I still remember his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I met that jogger, but in vain.
For several days, I waited at the same place. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.
