Franz Boas’s description of Inuit (因纽特人) life in the 19th century illustrates the probable moral code of early humans. Here, norms (规范) were unwritten and rarely expressed clearly, but were well understood and taken to heart. Dishonest and violent behaviours were disapproved of; leadership, marriage and interactions with other groups were loosely governed by traditions. Conflict was often resolved in musical battles. Because arguing angrily leads to chaos, it was strongly discouraged. With life in the unforgiving Northern Canada being so demanding, the Inuit’s practical approach to morality made good sense.
The similarity of moral virtues across cultures is striking, even though the relative ranking of the virtues may vary with a social group’s history and environment. Typically, cruelty and cheating are discouraged, while cooperation, humbleness and courage are praised. These universal norms far pre-date the concept of any moralising religion or written law. Instead, they are rooted in the similarity of basic human needs and our shared mechanisms for learning and problem solving. Our social instincts (本能) include the intense desire to belong. The approval of others is rewarding, while their disapproval is strongly disliked. These social emotions prepare our brains to shape our behaviour according to the norms and values of our family and our community. More generally, social instincts motivate us to learn how to behave in a socially complex world.
The mechanism involves a repurposed reward system originally used to develop habits important for self-care. Our brains use the system to acquire behavioural patterns regarding safe routes home, efficient food gathering and dangers to avoid. Good habits save time, energy and sometimes your life. Good social habits do something similar in a social context. We learn to tell the truth, even when lying is self-serving; we help a grandparent even when it is inconvenient. We acquire what we call a sense of right and wrong.
Social benefits are accompanied by social demands: we must get along, but not put up with too much. Hence self-discipline is advantageous. In humans, a greatly enlarged brain boosts self-control, just as it boosts problem-solving skills in the social as well as the physical world. These abilities are strengthened by our capacity for language, which allows social practices to develop in extremely unobvious ways.
1. What can be inferred about the forming of the Inuit’s moral code
A.Living conditions were the drive. B.Unwritten rules were the target.
C.Social tradition was the basis. D.Honesty was the key.
2. What can we learn from this passage
A.Inconveniences are the cause of telling lies. B.Basic human needs lead to universal norms.
C.Language capacity is limited by self-control. D.Written laws have great influence on virtues.
3. Which would be the best title for this passage
A.Virtues: Bridges Across Cultures B.The Values of Self-discipline

二、阅读单选(4题)(本大题共2小题)
Utah’s Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, hit a troubling milestone in 2024, dropping to its lowest water level since record-keeping began in 1847.
Scientists from Portland State University and Oregon State University recently investigated why the lake has reached such historically low levels. Their findings, published in Geophysical Research Letters, point to two main factors: decreased water flowing into the lake from rivers and streams, combined with increasing evaporation(蒸发).
“The lake has a lot of social and economic relevance for the region and Utah,” says Siiri Bigalke, the lead author. “It brings in over$1.9 billion annually, serves as a vital feeding ground for millions of migratory birds and enhances snowfall over the Wasatch Mountain Range.”
The research team created a mathematical model to track three main factors affecting the lake’s water level: how much water flows in from rivers, how much rain falls directly on the lake and how much water evaporates into the air. They created different situations to understand how each factor contributed to the lake’s decline.
Their findings revealed that reduced river flow played the biggest role, causing about three times more water loss than increased evaporation, which was the second most important factor. Changes in rainfall had surprisingly little impact. However, the researchers discovered something crucial: while less river water was the main driver of the decline, the lake wouldn’t have hit its record low without the increased evaporation caused by warming temperatures.
This creates an interesting puzzle for the future. As the region continues to warm, more water will evaporate from the lake’s surface. But as the lake becomes smaller, there’s less surface area from which water can evaporate. “This self-limiting process makes it challenging to predict exactly how the lake will change in the coming years,” the researchers say.
“The good news is that the lake responds quickly when river flows increase, suggesting that better water management could help restore lake levels. However, the challenge lies in balancing human water needs with maintaining enough flow to sustain the lake, all while facing the ongoing effects of warming temperatures,” the researchers add.
4.What does Siiri Bigalke stress in paragraph 3
A.The financial problems in Utah.
B.The great significance of the lake.
C.The lake’s eco-friendly surroundings.
D.The benefits the study has brought.
5.What does the research find
A.It is easy to predict how the lake will change.
B.Changes in rainfall had a surprisingly huge impact.
C.Warming temperatures affected the lake’s decline.
D.Evaporation caused more water loss than river flow.
6.What attitude do the researchers hold towards the future of the lake
A.Unclear. B.Concerned.
C.Indifferent. D.Optimistic.
7.What is the best title of the text
A.Global Warming Is Threatening Lakes

In a groundbreaking study in 2024, biologists discovered that plants communicate through complex networks of fungal (真菌的) threads. When attacked by insects, bean plants release chemical signals through these threads, warning neighboring plants to produce poison. Dr. Elena Torres, lead researcher, compares it to an “underground internet.” “One stressed plant can activate defenses across an entire forest,” she says. This finding challenges the view that plants are passive organisms.
Sound also plays a role. Using highly sensitive microphones, scientists recorded ultrasonic pulses (超声波的) given off by corn sprouts under drought stress. When these recordings were played to other plants, their roots grew toward the sound source. “It’s as if they’re ‘hearting’ their peers’ distress,” explains Dr. Hiroshi Nakamura. In another experiment, pea plants that were exposed to the sound of caterpillars eating leaves produced higher levels of defensive chemicals. This sound signaling could change pest control in agriculture.
Critics urge caution. Dr. Emily Carter argues, “We’re personifying plants. These reactions are biochemical, not conscious communication.” Moral debates also arise: If plants sense pain, should vegan diets be reconsidered Torres responds firmly: “Plants lack nervous systems. Stress responses are survival mechanisms, not sentience (知觉).” Meanwhile, farmers in Brazil already use “plant whisperer” devices that translate. leaf vibrations into data, predicting pest outbreaks days before visible damage.
The consequences are vast. Geneticists are engineering crops with enhanced signaling abilities, creating “warning systems” for droughts or diseases. In Kenya, farmers grow corn together with signal-producing plants that prevent insects naturally. “This could reduce pesticide use by 70%,” says agronomist Kwame Okafor. As research speeds up, we edge closer to a world where forests “speak,” fields “warn,” and gardens “guide” — a silent dialogue that has been going on beneath our feet for ages, now interpreted by science.
Recent advancements aim to apply plant communication commercially. A startup PhytoTech developed a sensor that interprets plant chemical SOS signals, notifying farmers via app to water or fertilize. Trials in California vineyards reduced crop loss by 25%. However, critics warn against over-reliance: “Nature’s language is complex,” says ecologist Dr. Rachel Lin. “Simplifying it to apps risks missing deeper connections.”
8.How do bean plants respond to insect attacks according to paragraph 1

四、七选五阅读(本大题共1小题)
It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is changing the way we work. With more and more simpler tasks being automated, humans are left with more high-level cognitive work, such as idea generation, strategic planning, and creative writing. 17
The problem is that we still follow a mindset that resembles the era of assembly (组装) lines, which doesn’t foster or facilitate the type of work needed today. Leaders constantly measured productivity in terms of how many hours an employee spent at work or the number of abstract targets they reached. 18 This type of output doesn’t fit in the era of AI. Instead, we have to make a psychological switch, structuring each workday for quality instead of quantity.
Start by kicking the old method of continuous work throughout the day. Research shows that continuous work impairs creative idea generation and high quality, complex cognitive work. 19 It’s recommended that using work sessions that are about 90 minutes long, attacking the hardest part of the task in the first 20 minutes and moving to the slower, easier work during the remaining time.
20 Therefore, managers should consider the principal area that a team or individual is working on rather than imposing the same work schedule across a team or an organization. Data suggests that it’s better to work on tasks that involve creativity, imagination, and problem solving during the first few hours of the day and again right before you go to sleep. 21 In between the focused work sessions, make time for a nap or for easy work that doesn’t require much creativity or focus.
A.That’s because people tend to overwork.
B.The time of day will also make a difference.
C.As a result, quantity of work was prioritized.
D.To excel in the new era, we’ll need to transform how we work.
E.With every new technology comes fear and then new opportunity.
F.Because of that, it’s better to work in bursts, giving the mind a rest.
G.The middle of the day is better for something calling for concentration.

Population Change
Why is the world’s population growing The answer is not what you might think. The reason for the explosion is not that people have been reproducing like rabbits, but that people have stopped dropping dead like flies. In 1900, people died at the average age of 30. By 2000 the average age was 65. But while increasing health was a typical feature of the 20th century, declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st.
Statistics show that the average number of births per woman has fallen from 4.9 in the early 1960s to 2.5 nowadays. Furthermore, around 50% of the world’s population live in regions where the figure is now below the replacement level (i.e. 2.1 births per woman) and almost all developed nations are experiencing sub-replacement birth rate. You might think that developing nations would make up the loss (especially since 80% of the world’s people now live in such nations), but you’d be wrong. Declining birth rate is a major problem in many developing regions too, which might cause catastrophic global shortages of work force within a few decades.
A great decline in young work force is likely to occur in China, for instance. What does it imply First, China needs to undergo rapid economic development before a population decline hits the country. Second, if other factors such as technology remain constant, economic growth and material expectations will fall well below recent standards and this could invite trouble.
Russia is another country with population problems that could break its economic promise. Since 1992 the number of people dying has been bigger than that of those being born by a massive 50%. Indeed official figures suggest the country has shrunk by 5% since 1993 and people in Russia live a shorter life now than those in 1961. Why is this occurring Nobody is quite sure, but poor diet and above all long-time alcoholism have much to do with it. If current trends don’t bend, Russia’s population will be about the size of Yemen’s by the year 2050.
In the north of India, the population is booming due to high birth rates, but in the south, where most economic development is taking place, birth rate is falling rapidly. In a further twist, birth rate is highest in poorly educated rural areas and lowest in highly educated urban areas. In total, 25% of India’s working-age population has no education. In 2030, a sixth of the country’s potential work force could be totally uneducated.
One solution is obviously to import foreign workers via immigration. As for the USA, it is almost unique among developed nations in having a population that is expected to grow by 20% from 2010—2030. Moreover, the USA has a track record of successfully accepting immigrants. As a result it’s likely to see a rise in the size of its working-age population and to witness strong economic growth over the longer term.

The sun was setting over Springdale, casting shadows across the busy community center. A group of teenagers, the members of the Springdale Youth Committee, gathered at a table. They looked determined and worried. Among them was Emily, a smart but often unnoticed girl who loves helping others.
For weeks, they had been organizing a fundraising event for the local homeless shelter, as the shelter struggled to assist the increasing number of individuals seeking help. The big day was one week away, and everything was set — until they discovered another group had a similar charity event on the same day. This could divide the people who might come and the donations they hoped to get.
“We can’t change the date now,” said Tom, a senior member, his voice filled with frustration. “We’ve already sent out invitations, and the place is booked.” Emily listened quietly to the discussion. She knew changing the date wasn’t possible, but she also realized competing with another worthy cause could hurt both sides.
After the meeting ended without a solution, Emily decided to take action. She spent the next day looking into ways to work with the other group, hoping to find a way that would help both the homeless shelter and the other cause.
The next day, she came to the committee with a suggestion. “What if we join our events ” she asked. “We could share resources, work together on promoting, and most importantly, make sure both causes are supported by the community.”
The members looked at each other, some doubtful, others interested. “That’s a great idea, Emily, but how will we get them to agree ” Laura, another member, asked. Emily had already thought this through. “I’ll talk to their organizer and show them the benefits of a joint event.” She knew the path ahead would be challenging, but she was determined to make it happen for Springdale and its people.

The committee agreed to let Emily lead this effort. As expected, the idea of partnering with the rival organization met with opposition. The other group, protective of their previous hard work, was initially reluctant to accept Emily’s proposal. They worried that their unique voice would be lost in the mix, insisting that their event should stand alone. Emily, unshaken, continued to highlight the benefits of partnership, emphasizing the potential for more donations and increased community involvement. It was a tough sell, but Emily’s determination and the sound reasoning of her plan gradually broke through their initial reluctance.
After days of negotiation, Emily finally got a positive reply. They had come to realize the value in Emily’s proposal and agreed to collaborate. The two teams began working together, pooling their resources and expertise to create a single, unified event. The result was an overwhelming success, attracting a larger crowd and fostering a sense of unity among the participants. The substantial funds collected profoundly benefited both the homeless shelter and the other cause, showing that when organizations put aside their differences and worked together towards a common goal, the power of collaboration could make a real difference.
