MH370 may have been brought down by 'rogue' pilot: air crash expert

CANBERRA -- A leading air crash expert has said missing Malaysia Airlines fight MH370 was likely to have been in controlled flight as it hit the water, giving life to the theory it was brought down by a rogue pilot or hijacker.
Air crash expert Larry Vance told Australia's Nine Network that there was no other way to explain why the flaperon, found off the coast of Madagascar, was "extended" meaning it would have been in controlled flight as it hit the water.
Vance said the only way to extend the flaperon, something which happens when a plane is attempting a landing, was for the pilot to engage a switch, something which is unlikely to have occurred during an sudden disaster.
"You cannot get the flaperon to extend any other way than if somebody extended it," Vance told the Nine Network's 60 Minutes program overnight.
"Somebody would have to select it (in the cockpit)."
Vance said, from photos released of the flaperon, there was evidence to show the aeroplane hit the water at a controlled speed, pointing to it being a "human engineered event."
"Somebody was flying the aeroplane into the water... There is no other alternate theory that you can follow of all the potentials that might have happened. There's no other theory that fits," he said.
"The force of the water is really the only thing that could make that jagged edge that we see (on the flaperon). It wasn't broken off. If it was broken off, it would be a clean break."
Meanwhile, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) crash investigator Peter Foley said there was a possibility that someone was in control of the plane as it went down.
"There is a possibility there was someone in control at the end and we're actively looking for evidence to support that," he said on Sunday night.
He admitted that if it was brought down by a "rogue" pilot, the wreckage could be outside the parameters of the Australian-led 120,000 square kilometer search zone. The search for the Boeing 777 is scheduled to end in coming weeks, considering less than 10,000 square kilometers is yet to be searched.
"If you guided the plane or indeed control-ditched the plane, it has an extended range, potentially," Foley said.
MH370 was a scheduled passenger flight bound for Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. There were 239 passengers and crew on board.

Step 1 Leading in
Greet the class.
Divide the students into three groups, and get them to have a competition on writing words about clothing, fun things and kitchen things. Then ask some students to write their words on the blackboard.
Lead the students to read aloud the words.
Step 2 Presentation
Prepare a big schoolbag with many things before class. Then, tell students you picked it up and many students picked up a few things and gave them to you.
Ask students to guess whose things they are one by one as the following:

Step 1 Leading in(1min)
Show a video sent by Bai Jingting. Knowing students in Hefei No.1 Middle School are insightful, he wants some students to join in their group in the TV show “Who’s the murderer”. To be able to join Bai Jingting, students have to finish a few tasks to prove they are good at deducing facts.
Students watch the video and know they have to finish a few tasks to join Bai Jingting.
Step 2 Brainstorm (2mins)
Ask students to observe the inferential usage of modal verbs“ must, can’t, could, might” through some sentences.
Students finish answering the questions and then share their answers.
Step 3 Choose the right modal verbs. (3mins)
Guide students to understand in which situation should “must, can’t, could, might” be used through exercise. “Must” should be used when you are very sure something is true. “Can’t” should be used when you are sure something is not true. While “could” and “might” are used to show that people are not sure about something.
Let students finish the modal verbs choosing exercise in 4a.
Step 4 “Who is best at deducing” Game(2mins)
Based on the pictures given, students fill in the blanks in 4b and stand up to say out the correct modal verbs as fast as possible
Step 5 Look and say(3mins)
Let students look at the picture and the sentences and try to say out the modal verbs in simple present tense, present progressive tense and present perfect tense to make inferences.
Step 6 Summary and learn(3mins)
Ask students to look at the sentences in different tenses and try to conclude the structure:

Step 7 Detective Game(4mins)
Let students choose one detective from six detectives and play the game by answering questions related to modal verbs in different tenses to make inferences.

Show a picture of the chatting between Bai Jingting and teacher.
Bai Jingting wants to see how well students can do in deducing facts. So he wants students to listen to a conversation between him and Lily and try to deduce something.
Let students listen to the conversation between Bai Jingting and Lily, and answer the questions.
Step 9 Observe and learn (2 mins)
Ask students to observe the general question sentences with “can” and find out the structure of general questions.

There are 7 clues to find out the suspect X.
Because of finishing the above tasks, each group will get a clue about the suspect X’s gender, eyes, mouth, nose, ears, hair and glasses. But each group only owns a clue. So each group should find out all clues by asking other groups questions and draw the portrait of suspect X. The group that finishes the task within the shortest time is the winner.
Six students are as a group.
Three students in each group go to other groups to get all clues by using the general questions with inferential modal verbs to make inferences. And the other three students stay in the group to answer questions from other groups.
After the clue-searching procedure, the group work together to finish the information card and the portrait of the suspect X.
Step 12 Writing about the suspect X(4mins)
Have students to write down different statements said about the suspect based on the clues they have found out during the group work.
Using the modal verbs with inferential functions to write down the information about the suspect X with the clues on their work sheet.
Present the writing.
