Yesterday we said goodbye to my grandfather. He was 96 years old and he was my last grandparent.
It has been a while since I saw my grandpa in person. I think he only met my youngest Lilly once. It kind of pains me to think that I deprived(剥夺)my children of the chance to know their only great-grandparent. But I didn’t want them to know or remember a very old man, incapable of getting down on his knees to play with them, and laughing with them because he can’t hear what they’re saying. That’s not the grandfather I know.
My grandfather never stopped. He was an early-adopter to have a laptop-type-device long before Apple was a houschold word and he was programming video games for grandkids to play before most people knew what programming was. He kept physically fit every day of his life. In his later years, he kept busy playing tennis, ballroom dancing, swimming, bicycling. In the end, he didn’t lose a battle to any disease. His body simply could not go on anymore.
I feel extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to know my grandfather. Intentional or not, he taught me many lessons. My grandfather taught me to waterski when I was 5 years old and he taught me how to surf about a decade after that. Whenever I thought it’s too late for me to study a language or get better at piano, he made it clear that it’s only my fear holding me back, not age.
These lessons make life meaningful to me. I prefer to think of them as lessons for living a positive life that leaves a positive impression on me. That is something I will strive to do. Thanks to my grandfather, I have a pretty good blueprint to follow. So I guess the best thing I can offer my children to feel connected to that man is the lessons I learned from him.
4. Why did the author seldom take kids to their disabled great-grandfather
A. To promote the kids’ independence.
B. To keep the old man living a quiet life.
C. To prevent the kids from being frightened.
D. To avoid the kids having a bad impression of him.
5. How could the author’s grandfather keep fit
A. By eating apples everyday. B. By playing with little kids.
C. By living a simple life. D. By keeping exercising.
6. What can we infer about the author’s grandfather from paragraph 4
A. He was a surfing instructor. B. He was very encouraging.
C. He did everything with an intention. D. He studied a new language in his old age.
7. What is the best title of the text
A Memories of My Grandfather B. Winning a Battle to Disease
C. Connecting the Generations D. Impression of My Childhood
C
Search And Rescue(SAR)teams are often accompanied by man’s best friend, A rescue dog’s superior sense of smell can be critical to finding survivors among rubble(瓦砾)and earthquake ruins. But now a new furry animal is joining the ranks of SAR, and it’s the rat.
Newsweek reports that rats are being trained to assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits. The rats are fitted with tiny backpacks equipped with microphones and are being sent through ruins to find and come in contact with survivors.
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Donna Kean, a researcher from Glasgow, Scotland who has been working with rats for years. Kean originally was interested in primates(灵长类)but her fascination with rats grew when she saw how quickly the small animals seemed to learn and how well they can be trained.
The rats first started their training in a small empty room and gradually moved on to increasingly complex situations until they came close to an actual collapsed building site. That’s where they find the survivors and the potential to talk to the victims through the backpacks fitted to the rats.
Today, Kean is training 170 rats alongside nonprofit organization APOPO in Tanzania, East Africa for their project called HeroRATs. Their rats are not only being trained to search through the ruins, but also to find landmines(地雷)and even detect tuberculosis(结核病). APOPO’s studies found that their rats have sped up the process for humans to help people in terrible situations.
According to Newsweek, the backpack is made by one of their employees in APOPO, a needlewoman and is made to hold a microphone as well as location trackers. The rats are the real heroes though. As Kean puts it, “they are so smart and they are so good at moving through all kinds of different environments.” “We have the potential to speak to victims through the microphone,” she continues, knowing these little rats are on their way to making a big difference.
8. Why is a rescue dog mentioned at the beginning of the text
A. To compare dogs with the rats. B. To draw public attention to dogs.
C. To introduce the potential of rats. D. To indicate animals’ unique skills.
9. What inspired Kean to train rats for SAR teams
A. The danger of rescue. B. The rat’s intelligence.
C. The interest in primates. D. The teamwork with APOPO.
10. What can we learn from the HeroRATs project
A. Rats are brave to face a real-life disaster.
B. Rats can be easily trained to find survivors.
C. Rats are often sent to work in disaster areas.
D. Rats can probably help people in various ways.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Rats are perfect for SAR work. B. The microphone is a key facility.
C. The backpack is a hand-made tool. D. Rats are to replace other rescue animals.
D
You probably like blue, and you’re not alone. Across the globe, a majority of people tend to select blue as their favourite colour. A new study from University of Wisconsin found that not only do we adore blue, but we start to give meaning to colours as we age.
During the study conducted by psychology professor Karen Schloss at the University of Wisconsin in 2019, the researchers investigated the science of how different people perceive colour. They noted that subjects with a preference for a sports team found their favourite team’s colours more favourable. The more they valued their team, the more they favoured the specific colour. “It tells us that our experiences with the world are constantly influencing the way we view colour,” Schloss says.
So, why does blue dominate lists of favourites From previous surveys the researchers found that blue has been a favourite colour. Even the earliest-recorded colour studies from the 1800s show that blue is universally loved, due at least in part to our fondness for blues in nature. Many colours in nature that we love are blue, especially a blue sky, the sea and many flowers. A blue sky is enough to make many people very happy. It’s possible then, that blue offer plenty of positive experiences, which we unconsciously link to our favourite colour.
But blue isn’t the only attention-grabbing colour. The other finding of the research was that our colour interests change as we gain new experiences. The younger you are, for instance, the more likely you are to enjoy a brighter colour. As you age, you’re more likely to take on darker colours as your favourites; younger women, according to the researchers, tend to enjoy purples and reds, while younger men may lean toward green or yellow-green. The studies showed that dark yellowish-brown was the world’s least liked colour.
Simply put, the things we enjoy most in our lives will drive our colour preferences.
12. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in paragraph 2
A The specific sports team. B. A subject’s personality.
C. People’s preference of a colour. D. The feature of colours.
13. What do the early colour studies tell us
A. Human beings are fully linked to nature.
B. Our preference for blue is longstanding.
C. It’s a coincidence that blue is our favourite.
D. Blue is associated to the sky and the sea.
14. What was the second finding of the research
A. Our colour preferences may shift over time.
B. We may prefer brighter colours as we age.
C. We tend to stick with just one colour in our lives.
D. Blue is a top choice for favourite colour in the world.
15. What can be concluded from the text
A. Older people can understand the colours better.
B. More mysteries remain to be seen about colour.
C. Colour preferences change our view of the world.
D. Colour preferences are shaped by our experiences.

How I Signed My Kids Up for Rock Climbing
As a sports family we’ve tried it all. However, we were lost when it came to finding a sport for our two youngest, 9 and 11. They can’t play on the same team because of the age difference and gender separation in sports.
I was about to throw in the towel when I was hit by inspiration. It was at the farmer’s market that I saw a group from the local climbing gym handing out flyers. ___16___ They break up the age groups into 6—8 and 9—12 and there’s also no gender separation in rock climbing. So I knew that my two youngest could do it together with no trouble.
The kids were super excited when I first brought up the idea. My husband also pointed out that climbing was definitely a good sport. The first few weeks I stayed close just to see how they were going to treat the kids and how much fun everyone was having. ___17___
The first session filled me with delight. They spent a lot of time talking about safety, how to use the ropes and how to stretch properly, and all that made me interested in. ___18___ Every child got a chance to go up with the instructors showing the one-on-one instructions but it took so long for each kid to go up. I was worried my kids were going to nod off before it was their turn.
___19___ As soon as they started climbing on the huge wooden walls with plastic holds, the kids were unstoppable. Once they got the hang of it they were practically flying up the wall. The instructors were very good with kids, too.
All in all I have to say that signing my kids up for rock climbing was a resounding success ___20___ It’s great for staying healthy and my kids tell me that it’s a ton of fun.
A. My kids were unwilling to take up the challenge.
B. The kids, though, looked a little bored as time went on.
C. So I know that the lessons have stuck with any other moms.
D. Fortunately, however, things picked up pretty quickly after that.
E. Then I was convinced that generally I’d made a good decision.
F. One thing in particular that caught my eye was their kid’s program.
G. I’d recommend it to other moms who also like to get kids into the game.

Experiences at a Sports Meet
I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a decent runner. As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet.
The meeting lasted two days. I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. We weren’t allowed to go near the VIP pavilion (看台) as kids, so I had to observe the proceedings from afar.
Large tents were provided for the young competitors opposite the VIP pavilion on the other side of the track. My school team was assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track. It was just our luck but we made the best use of what we had.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 m relay later in the afternoon. I was a pretty good jumper and no one could outclass me. The competition began, and I jumped over 4 meters! That was quite the accomplishment. I won the gold medal in the long jump.
All my schoolmates cheered for me and I promised to win in the 8×50 m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race time arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched, holding my breath, as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.

【答案】Dear Peter,
I’m writing to share with you my experience at the weekend. I took part in a volunteer activity. My duty was to clean a busy street which is about four hundred meters long. After I got up at seven o’clock, sleepy, I went out without a second thought. Cleaning the street seems easy, but sometimes it is very dangerous as you have to be careful of passing cars and bikes. I threw myself onto the bed as soon as I got back home in the afternoon. It was not until then that I realized how great street cleaners were.
So I hope everyone should keep our surroudings clean so as to reduce cleaners’burden. All drivers must have an eye on cleaners cleaning the street especially at dawn. What about your weekend Please tell me in your next email.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】My turn arrived and I took the stick and began to run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner. Then disaster struck! The stick flew out of my hand when I moved forward. Because I was young and flexible, I was able to quickly pick it up and continue the race. However, the accident cost us valuable time. When I handed the stick to the next runner, I knew everything was lost. He ran with all his might, but it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal.
I felt terrible for letting the team down due to my fault. Not knowing what to say to my teammates, I cried sadly. I was so guilty and ashamed. However, instead of blaming the failure on me, my teammates gathered around me and kept comforting me that what was done was done, for which we had no regret. From the experience, I learned about failure and success and how to deal with them. I have been bearing that lesson I learned that day in mind even since and it urges me to look forward.
