①Mom’s bedroom opened onto a community hallway, so she kept the door locked, but needing a safety pin, Andy took the key from its hiding place, unlocked the door and stepped in. Standing against the wall was a big, black bicycle with balloon tires. Andy recognized it instantly. It was the same second-hand bike he had been admiring in a Baltimore Street shop window. He had even asked about the price. It was a shock. Something like $150.
②He was deeply moved by the discovery and yet sickened by the knowledge that, bursting into her room like this, he had robbed her of the pleasure of seeing him astonished and delighted on Christmas day. The boy backed out, put the key back in its hiding place, and thought over what to do.
③He decided that between now and Christmas he must do nothing, absolutely nothing. Nothing must deny her the happiness of seeing him completely amazed on Christmas day.
④In his bedroom Andy began composing and testing exclamations of delight: “Wow!” “A bike with balloon tires! I don’t believe it!” “I’m the luckiest boy alive!” Yet he soon realized that, with his lack of acting talent, all of them were going to sound false at the critical moment. Maybe it would be better to say nothing but appear to be shocked into such deep pleasure that speech had escaped him. He’d seen speechless gratitude in the movies and it never really worked until the actors managed to cry a few quiet tears. He doubted he could cry, though. In front of a hand-held mirror in his bedroom Andy tried the whole range of expressions; mouth open and eyes wide; hands slapped firmly against both cheeks to keep the jaw from falling off; ear-to-ear grin with all teeth fully exposed while hugging himself with both arms. These and more he practiced for several days without getting confidence in any of them. He decided to wait until Christmas morning and see if anything came naturally...
That Christmas morning Andy came out of his bedroom and saw Mom’s presents had been placed under the tree during the night, a few small brightly wrapped packages, but no bicycle. Andy supposed mom had found the bike just too expensive and sent it back.
“Wait a minute!” mom said “There’s something in my bedroom I forgot all about.” She went out, and a moment later came back wheeling the big black two-wheeler with balloon tires. Andy didn’t have to pretend, after all.
“All right now, don’t carry on about it. It’s only a bicycle,” mom said. Still, Andy knew that she was as happy as he was to see her so happy.
24.Why did Andy enter mom’s bedroom
A.To seek for a key. B.To look for his gift.
C.To play hide-and-seek. D.To look for a safety pin.
25.What was Andy’s concern
A.Mom would be upset by his finding. B.His discovery might ruin mom’s pleasure.
C.Mom found out him stealing into her room. D.His mother got sick from working overtime.
26.What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 mean
A.Signal. B.Smile. C.Speech. D.Stroke.
27.Which words best describe Andy
A.Humorous and active. B.Sensible and considerate.
C.Responsible and frank. D.Outgoing and independent.
Our family has no connection to French-speaking countries, yet my father decided to start learning French when he was 57. Before long, he was visiting the French bakery across town to practice his pronunciation (and buy macarons). His motivation ran deeper than a passion for pastries---my grandmother developed signs of Alzheimer’s (阿尔兹海默症) disease in her early 70s, and studies suggest that being bilingual can delay the onset of the condition by up to five years.
Drawn by that potential benefit, many people, like my father, have attempted to pick up a new language in adulthood. According to a survey conducted by the language learning app Memrise, 57 percent of users reported “boost brain health” as a motivation for using the program.
But is that really possible Lots of activities are linked to better brain health in old age, like getting more education when you’re younger, physical activity and cognitively stimulating hobbies. Experts say regularly speaking multiple languages may be especially beneficial, though.
“We use language in all aspects of daily life, so a bilingual brain is constantly working,” said Mark Antoniou, an associate professor at Western Sydney University in Australia who specializes in bilingualism. “You don’t really get that from other enriching experiences, like playing a musical instrument.”
The age at which you learn another language appears to be less important than how often you speak it, said Caitlin Ware, a research engineer at Broca Hospital in Paris who studies bilingualism and brain health. “The cognitive (认知的) benefit is from having to inhibit (抑制) your mother tongue,” she said, which your brain is forced to do if you’re trying to recall the right words in another language. “So if the second language is used a lot, you’re getting that cognitive training.”
That process—called cognitive inhibition—is linked to better executive functioning. In theory, by improving these types of processes, the brain becomes better adapted to the damage caused by diseases like dementia—a concept known as cognitive reserve. The stronger your mental faculties, the thinking goes, the longer you can function normally, even if your brain health starts to decline as you are getting old.
28.Why did the author’s father study French
A.Macarons in the French bakery are yummy.
B.He has relatives in French-speaking countries.

D.Memrise talked him into learning a second language.

A.Brain gets regular training. B.Brain has sufficient rest.
C.Brain takes in more oxygen. D.Brian gets enriching resources.
30.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Dementia is unavoidable. B.Language can cure dementia.
C.Learning is a lifelong journey. D.Lack of physical faculties leads to dementia.
31.What is the author’s attitude toward his father’s French learning
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Indifferent. D.Positive.

A decade ago, someone extracted (提取) some rules from a film and released them online. Like my own rules, they’re all quite simple, but much closer to timeless principles.
1. Make peace with your past so it won’t mess with your present.
Bill Gates says the worst day in his life was the day his mother died. It’s a simple reminder that we all have regrets. We can’t change the people we once were, but we can make peace with them. Open the closet and let in some light. 36 Life is but a series of fleeting moments, one forever chasing the next. The only place where you can live, act, and make a difference is the present. Today.
2. 37
Sometimes, you can’t find the power to move on immediately. Sometimes, you really want to kick yourself. That too is part of life. What you can do is allow time to pass. I know you want to just fix everything and move on, but if you stitch a wound poorly, it’ll get worse down the road. 38 Sometimes, even what heals leaves a scar (伤疤). Those will be with us forever. The least we can do is let them mend properly.
3. Don’t compare your life to others, and don’t judge them.
Mark Twain said, “Comparison is the death of joy.” 39 The less you compare, the bigger your capacity for empathy. Meet people on their own terms. You won’t doubt yourself as much and be less prone to jealousy, which only leads to fear, anger, hate, and suffering.
4. Smile, for you don’t own all the problems in the world.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has over 160 million fans. But none like Haley Harbottle. Haley, 22, has Moebius syndrome She has never smiled in her life. 40 Yet here we are, walking around, often choosing not to extend this simple gesture to uplift our fellow human beings. We each have our own challenges, but as long as you can smile, do it. Who knows who you’ll infect
A.So take time.
B.It’s a debatable question.
C.Time heals everything, so give it time.
D.Words can hurt us more than weapons.
E.Worse, it’s also the birth of misfortune.
F.Otherwise, our past will forever be a drag on our heels.
G.There is someone on this planet literally dying to smile.

After graduating from college, I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked (搭便车)to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station---and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases big stations couldn’t risk hiring inexperienced person. “Go out in the remote areas and find a small station that will give you a chance,” she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois.
While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.
But I wasn’t hired. My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment”. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station ” I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was that you said about sports Do you know anything about football ” Then he asked me to be the announcer of an imaginary game.

Good morning, everyone. My family name is Neeson. I want to tell you in advance that your grades here won't affect your final score, but it will be nice if you learn something new here. Our school is one of the first schools in the city to include this course in the school program, so we can call it “an experiment”. Through the course, you will learn how to cook. In today's class, you're going to learn “Introduction to Cooking”. I'm sure some of you have cooked something for yourself before. Or maybe some of you helped your parents in the kitchen or your grandparents with the family reunion. I personally think it's an important skill, so I will try to pass on my knowledge to you. Every week, we have 50 minutes to spend together here. During this period of time, you will learn how to make one dish. All the tools and ingredients will be supplied by the city government, organizer of this program. In addition, before every class you will choose what dish to cook next. After the class, the dish which gets the most likes will win the title “Dish of the Day”. So, do you feel excited I do!

由文章第一段中“Mom’s bedroom opened onto a community hallway, so she kept the door locked, but needing a safety pin, Andy took the key from its hiding place, unlocked the door and stepped in. (妈妈的卧室对着一条社区走廊,所以她把门锁上了,但安迪需要一个安全别针,于是他从藏钥匙的地方拿出钥匙,打开门走了进去。)”可知,Andy进入妈妈的卧室是为了找安全别针。故选D。
25.细节理解题。由文章第二段中“He was deeply moved by the discovery and yet sickened by the knowledge that, bursting into her room like this, he had robbed her of the pleasure of seeing him astonished and delighted on Christmas day. (他被这个发现深深打动,但同时也感到痛苦,因为他这样闯入妈妈的房间,剥夺了她在圣诞节那天看到他惊讶和高兴的机会。)”和第三段中“Nothing must deny her the happiness of seeing him completely amazed on Christmas day. (什么也不能阻止她在圣诞节那天看到他完全惊讶的快乐。)”可知,Andy担心他的发现可能会破坏妈妈的快乐。故选B。
26.词句猜测题 根据第四段中“In his bedroom Andy began composing and testing exclamations of delight (在卧室里,安迪开始构思和测试喜悦的感叹)”和“ith all teeth fully exposed (露出所有的牙齿)”可知,此处描写Andy想表示出喜悦,咧嘴一笑,所有牙齿都完全暴露在外,安迪在练习表演“笑”,grin意为“笑”。

、倒数第三段中“That Christmas morning Andy came out of his bedroom and saw Mom’s presents had been placed under the tree during the night, a few small brightly wrapped packages, but no bicycle. Andy supposed mom had found the bike just too expensive and sent it back. 、最后一段““All right now, don’t carry on about it. It’s only a bicycle,” mom said. Still, Andy knew that she was as happy as he was to see her so happy.

66.Pro:
Dear Albert,
I am keen on a financial management course although someone may argue it is a waste of time. I think such a course would be beneficial.
Firstly, it can teach us the value of money. Secondly, we can learn to use money wisely in our life. Finally, relative knowledge can better prepare us to adapt to our future life.
In closing, I strongly believe the course would be popular with students because it is not only interesting but useful as well.
Yours,
Li Hua
Con:
Dear Albert,
I don’t think the course is necessary. Despite sounding fashionable and high-end, it is a waste of time.
To begin with, our main mission is to study, leaving little time for irrelevant stuff. For another, we are too young to own sufficient money calling for management. Last but not least, money is not everything, not deserving so much emphasis in students’ life.
In short, the majority of students are not interested in the course, so I don’t think it is a good idea.
Yours,
Li Hua
67. Led into a studio, I stood before the microphone. It was beyond my expectation that I was eventually given an opportunity. Despite feeling at a loss for the requirement, I was determined to grasp this precious chance. Suddenly it occurred to me that I watched a magnificent game last autumn in my college. In no time I began. I was completely absorbed in my announcement until I saw Peter, who folded his arms before his chest, signal to me to stop.
Peter reached out his hands to me, smiling enthusiastically. Then he said I was hired. I stared at him, mechanically uttering words of gratitude and promised he would not regret later. Bidding farewell to my new boss, I was in seventh heaven and could not wait to rush home and share the good news with my parents. Surely mom was right when she told me that something good wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous disappointment. That was definitely the reason why one must carry on.
