What is the definition of comfort food
2
How is the definition of comfort food given Why does the author give the definition in this way
The author's definition of comfort food is given in both its broadest sense, “any food that makes us feel better”, and in a narrower sense, “a particular type of comfort food”. The author focuses on the narrower definition in the article because comfort food is a complex topic. By defining comfort food in this way, the author makes us aware of the wide range of the subject, but then draws our attention to the aspect of comfort food that he/she will be discussing in this article.
Read para. 3 and answer the following question.
According to the third paragraph, how does comfort food such as chicken soup cheer us up
By connecting with our happy childhood and being tied up with the feeling of being taken care of.
Read para. 4-para. 5 and answer the following questions.
1. For people who move away from their home country, what largely determines their comfort food
2. How do you understand the sentence of this article “It’s food for the soul.”
Where they come from.
We usually associate food with something our bodies need—it relieves our hunger and satisfies our appetite. However, comfort food not only serves that purpose, but also makes us feel comfortable mentally and emotionally. Since comfort food is closely connected with positive personal experiences and happy memories, eating it can lift one's spirits. Therefore, comfort food is considered to be food for the soul.
Discuss the questions with your classmates.
Task
3
1. How does the author introduce the topic of comfort food What do you think of the technique
2. What is the author's purpose for writing this article
Possible answers:
1. The author introduces the topic with a personal experience from her childhood that illustrates comfort food has the power to lift our spirits, before continuing with a more detailed description of exactly how comfort food does that. This technique is quite effective, as it attracts the reader's attention and inspires interest in the topic of discussion.
2. The author wants to point out that food is not only useful for keeping us alive and healthy, but in the form of comfort food, it also benefits us emotionally by lifting our spirits and soothing our soul.
After reading
Work in groups. Discuss the questions with your classmates. Then share your opinions before the class.
1. What foods can remind you of your happy memories Describe the memories they recall.

P4 A3
1. For me, childhood is inseparably connected with the taste of tanghulu, a snack of sugar-coated hawthorn berries on a bamboo stick. My dad used to bring me all sorts of snacks when he came back home from work, but tanghulu is by far my favourite. Even now, the mere taste of this treat recalls the warmth of his bear hugs. Whenever I miss home, I treat myself to a stick of tanghulu. It's my secret cure for homesickness and it works every time.
2. I think people's favourite food and comfort food are different in two ways. First, people's favourite food can come and go, while their comfort food often remains the same. Second, people's favourite food often connects with satisfying their hunger, while comfort food usually connects with memories from their childhood.
