Fruits like apples and bananas have special chemicals(化学物质)inside. When you cut the fruit, these chemicals meet the air. This makes the fruit turn brown. But it doesn't mean the fruit is bad right away.
Lemon juice can be helpful! It is very sour(酸的).This sourness slows down the oxidation, keeping the fruit fresh longer.
Now,here's a super fun use of lemon juice:writing secret(秘密)message s at home.
Steps:
◆Squeeze the lemon juice into a cup.
◆Dip the cotton swab in the juice.Write or draw on the white paper.
◆Wait 10 minutes for it to dry.You can't see your messages at all.
◆Hold the paper near a warm light.Watch closely...your words magically show again!
Science behind it:
When it's cold, the lemon juice hides in the paper. But when you heat(加热)the paper,it turns brown—just like the oxidation that makes apples go brown.
Science helps us see the world in cool ways. From brown fruits to secret messages, there's always fun to discover!

12.(2025 武侯区校级模拟) Humans have long tried to tell the time. From the farmers working outdoors to today's global travelers, knowing the hour shapes daily life.
Ancient people watched the sun rise and noted star positions and how daylight changed with the seasons.Birds returning to their nests meant evening's coming. Some flowers opened and closed at certain times of a day.Around 4,000 years ago,Egyptians and Babylonians created a counting system based on the number 12.They believed 12 was chosen because the Moon circles Earth 12 times yearly. This system divided days into 24 hours and years into 12 months. The first tools to tell the time were sundials—stone blocks with curly lines.
Mechanical(机械的) clocks first showed up in Europe around 1300.Unlike modern clocks with hands and faces, they used heavy weights and ropes to turn wheels and ring a bell every hour.In 1656,Dutch scientist Christian Huygens created the first clock with a pendulum(钟摆)﹣﹣a swinging weight. An ancient clock from 1386 remains in good condition. Many visitors go there just to hear it ticking.
Before the mid﹣19th century, nearly every town in the UK kept its own time. These local times could be different by as much as 30 minutes because the Sun rises at different times in different places. The spread of railways connected many areas.Train drivers had to switch time zones(切换时区) as they traveled, and this was really hard to understand. In 1840,the Great Western Railway told all stations to use London time,or Greenwich Mean Time(GMT).In 1880,a law set GMT as the time to be commonly followed and used across Britain.
In the 1920s,people started using electric clocks.Atomic (原子的) clocks came along in 1955.They can measure 1/1,000,000,000 of a second. These clocks are used to set other clocks around the world. If they had been running since the Big Bang,13.8 billion years ago, they would have lost or gained less than a second.
Today, mobile phones keep time using the international time scale, which gets data from over 400 atomic clocks.Atomic clocks are also used onboard GPS satellites(卫星) that travel around the Earth.
All about timekeeping ﹣from sundials to atomic clocks ﹣﹣how (1) ,machaines and science help us tell the time ●Ancient times To know the time, humans watched the Sun's rising, the positions of stars, and animals' behavior. What is your perfect vacation?Popular trips include relaxing on a warm beach.Or they involve sightseeing in a beautiful city.Increasingly, though, many of us don't want to just visit a place. We want to experience it.
Experiential travel allows to get closer to local people and their culture. For example, experiential travelers might stay a few weeks with local hosts. They might take classes to learn craft. In other words, these travelers immerse(沉浸) themselves in a different culture. One such trip is in Fujian. There,a small group of travelers meet with a local fishermen. They learn how to fix nets and throw them in the water. They can fish together.Afterwards they all cook and eat a meal with the fisherman's family.
Experiential travel helps people become better citizens.First of all,it lets them understand a place more deeply than tourists usually do.As one traveler says, traditional travel is"like" studying science without ever doing a scientific experiment."Since they often stay and work in one place, travelers learn more about the lives of local people. It exposes them to different ways of living and working.Experiential travelers often make life﹣long friends with local people. They stay in touch after the trip has finished.Experiential travel helps travelers﹣﹣and local people﹣﹣feel like they are part of a global community.
You don't need to use a travel company to get the benefits(好处) of experiential travel. You can do it by yourself. You can ask local people questions when you travel.Ask a driver about her life. You can also join a soccer game in the street.Listening to people's stories and interacting(交流) with local people will change your understanding of the place you are visiting.

15.(2025 泰兴市三模) Bridges are built over roads, rivers,or railways. They appeared a long time ago.Back then, they were built with stones, ropes, logs, and vines. Some were very simple, like a footbridge made out of a big tree. But today, bridges are bigger, stronger, and more modern. This is because we have better technology today.
Bridges are a mix of maths, physics, design, and architecture(建筑学).They are designed by skilled engineers and they take years to build.
Bridges must be strong enough to support not only their own weight, but also the weight of the people and vehicles(交通工具).They must last a long time and be built in a way that protects them from earthquakes, strong winds, and freezing.
The three main types of bridges are arch, beam and suspension.Let's take a closer look at each one.
Arch(拱)bridges were invented a long time ago by the Romans. They were built out of stone or brick, and stood on support structures in the shape of arches.Beam(梁)bridges are horizontal(水平的)beams supported by columns(柱子).The columns take the weight of the people and vehicles passing on the beam. These bridges are very old as well, and people used stone and trees to build them.Suspension(悬索)bridges have a tower on either side. The towers are connected by cables(缆绳).They are more modern, with the first ones being built in the early 19th century.
The oldest bridge in the world is the Zhaozhou Bridge in China. It's an arch bridge made out of stone that was built in 605 A.D.But if you're looking for one of the most beautiful and famous bridges,it would be the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It's a suspension bridge built in 1937.It is 2.78 kilometres long.If you think that's long, you should see the Danyang﹣﹣kunshan Grand Bridge in China. It's over 164.85 kilometres long! It's the world's longest bridge.

16.(2025 重庆) When you make a mistake or say something wrong,it's easy to be hard on yourself. Then stress is caused.Feelings of anger, disappointment and sadness come along. That's why such stress needs to be dealt with.
Max,a 14﹣year﹣old boy, used to be very competitive and always felt stressed. Now he is learning to give himself care and kindness. When he doesn't win or get the top marks,he talks to himself,"It's OK not to be perfect."He knows he always does his best and that is enough.
What Max does is called self﹣compassion(自我和解).With self﹣compassion, you treat yourself kindly like a friend. It allows you to forgive(原谅) yourself when you mess up or fail. After feelings of guilt(愧疚) go away, you get more relaxed and you can think more clearly. This way self﹣compassion makes you move forward. Many studies have shown it is of great help.
However, some disagree. They argue that self﹣compassion leads people to be less active. But Breines and Chen's study had a different result. They gave students a difficult word test. The students were given the chance to study for a second test. They found those who were compassionate toward their failure spent more time preparing.
Experts suggest that you should write a letter to yourself, describing the situation that causes your pain and accepting how you feel.Or you can do something you like to make yourself feel at peace.Suzy Reading,a psychologist(心理学家),suggests using a"gentle touch"like placing one smooth hands on your heart,so you will feel safe and loved.
Being hard on yourself causes stress.However,(1) .Self﹣compassion means being kind to yourself. With its help, you will have more relaxation and a clearer mind so that(2) .Some think differently, but a study shows that(3) .To practice self﹣compassion,some(4) are suggested by experts.

Creating rice paddy art takes a lot of work and planning.First, farmers draw a picture with a computer program. Then, they mark the design on a map of the field. This helps show which kind of rice should be planted in each section. After that, they 're ready to sow(播种) the seeds, either with the help of drones or volunteers.
Rice paddy art in China started in 2010 in Shenyang, showing dragons and Chinese paintings. Then the practice started to catch on in some other places like Harbin and Hangzhou. On October 24,2023,a huge 3 D rice field painting in Tianjin set a Guinness World Record!Named "Celebrating Harvest,Promoting Harmony",it covers 50,798 square meters﹣bigger than any other 3 D rice field artwork ever around the world.

8.(2025春 青羊区期末) Did you have any interesting dreams last night?
Our dreams come from a part of the brain that has our ideas and memories(记忆).A person can have up to six dreams a night. Each one usually lasts from 10 to 40 minutes.Everyone dreams, but not everyone remembers their dreams. Most people dream in color, usually with sound. And we usually dream about ourselves and the people we know.
Alan Siegel is a scientist who studies dreams."Dreams can tell us a lot about ourselves,"he says,"and can help us work out problems."Another scientist,Robert Stickgold, thinks dreams come from our memories.Stickgold says that dreaming about past things is of great use because it helps us learn from them.
Here are a few kinds of dreams and what people think they mean.
Dream 1:You Meet Someone While in Your Pajamas
This dream may be the result of an embarrassing event(尴尬的事件) in your life. Some people think we dream about something embarrassing if our brains are trying to work out a problem in our own lives.
Dream 2:You're Flying
If you dream about flying, you are probably quite happy. This is a good time in your life. You may feel that other people see you as a head of a team.
Dream 3:You Didn't Study for a Test
This probably means you are worried about an important future(未来) event. If you haven't prepared for it,your dream may be telling you,"It's time to get to work !"
