It uses clothes such as sneakers, joggers, and track jackets and mixes them into everyday outfits.

If you’re studying English or another foreign language, you might be wondering, “How is this going to help me in my life ” As it turns out, just studying and thinking in a foreign language has its own benefits!
In a 2012 study, Boaz Keysar, a professor at the University of Chicago in the US, led an experiment concerning the relationship between foreign languages and people’s way of thinking.
In the experiment, people were asked to make a choice: Take a guarantee of one pound or take a 50 percent chance of winning 2.50 pounds. When presented with this choice in their native language, most people took the safe option of only getting one pound. But they were more willing to make the riskier choice when asked in a foreign language, leading to more profits overall, according to The Guardian. As Keysar put it, “People just hate the prospect (前景) of losing, but they hate it less in a foreign language.”
In another study published in 2023, Keysar and his team did an experiment in which participants were given a series of related words like “dream”, “snooze (打盹)”, “bed” and “rest”. Later, when asked which words they remembered hearing, people were more likely to mistakenly remember “sleep”, which was not on the list, in their native language. But it was much less likely to happen if they did the test in a foreign language. As Keysar explained, people have more careful thinking when using a foreign language, leading to memories with greater accuracy.
The foreign language effect may even stretch to our personality. Silvia Purpuri at the University of Trento, Italy, looked at people’s willingness to face uncertainty and enter unfamiliar situations. Being tolerant of uncertainty allows people to have more creative ideas and be more open to new things. It turns out that people naturally score more highly on this trait (特点) when they can speak or use a foreign language because speaking a foreign language requires taking risks.
The evidence (证据) is clear: By learning a foreign language, you’re not just learning a language – you’re gaining a new state of mind.
24. In Keysar’s experiment, how did people make decisions in a foreign language compared with their native language
A. They were faster.
B. They were more hopeful.
C. They were more daring.
D. They were more careful.
25. According to Keysar, how does using a foreign language affect memory
A. It improves memory recall speed.
B. It increases memory accuracy.
C. It improves long-term memory.
D. It requires more repetitions for memorization.
26. According to the text, what is a potential benefit of being open to uncertainty
A. Increased creativity.
B. Better learning ability.
C. Greater self-confidence.
D. Improved decision-making ability.
27. What does the text mainly talk about
A. How language learning affects memory.
B. How learning foreign languages influences one’s future.
C. Challenges of learning a foreign language.
D. Advantages of learning a foreign language.

Birds have been closely related to big harvests in the culture of the Miao ethnic group. The Miao people have loved birds for generations. That’s why people see delicate (精致的) birdcages hanging in front of many households in the Miao villages.
“The Miao people love birds so much that they even bring their birds with them while working hard in the fields,” said Wang Qiu, a 35-year-old inheritor (传承者) of the Kala birdcage-making craft. “Even if they slip (滑倒), the birdcages they carry carefully remain fine.”
Located in the northeast of Danzhai county, Guizhou province, Kala village is famous for its time-honored cage-weaving craft, which dates back over 400 years. In 2009, it was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) of Guizhou.
“Kala birdcages are famous for their remarkable firmness,” explained Wang. “Each cage is carefully crafted from the sturdy moso bamboo (结实的楠竹) and the flexible water bamboo (柔韧的水竹). The former provides hardness, while the latter contributes resilience (韧性), resulting in a cage that is durable.”
After marrying her husband in Kala village, Wang was attracted by the excellent cage-weaving craft there. Wang Yuhe, her father-in-law and a Kala birdcage-making inheritor, taught her everything he knew about the craft. As a member of the younger generation, Wang Qiu injects vigor (活力) into the centuries-old craft.
“With the growing awareness of wildlife protection, the population of people who hunt and raise birds has been decreasing, so has been the need for birdcages,” said Wang. “So, I decided to combine closely art with everyday life, meeting the needs of a broader range of consumers.” Wang designs and makes everyday items, from bookshelves and lampshades (灯罩) to graceful earrings in the shape of Kala birdcages.
In her efforts to show Kala birdcages to a wider audience, Wang has been sharing videos of her skills on social media. “I hope that my videos can attract more people and get them to learn about the fascinating skills of Kala village as well as the splendid culture of the Miao people.”

If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again.
It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science& Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society.
In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.
The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.
“Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi.
The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.
The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks& clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.
32. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the new report
A. To recommend a strange shopping habit. B. To introduce a respected scientific journal.
C. To analyze online shopping. D. To prove the advantage of offline shopping.
33. What does the underlined word “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Combine. B. Produce. C. Divide. D. Check.
34. What can we learn about “the last mile” delivery
A. It is designed by the research team. B. It is managed by the factories.
C. It causes high greenhouse gas emissions. D. It influences the total greenhouse gas footprints.
35. According to the analysis, which is probably the most eco-friendly way to shop
A. Buying at physical stores. B. Buying from bricks & clicks.
C. Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time.

Alex sat quietly at the back of his Chinese class, his eyes fixed on the textbook before him. As a shy and unnoticed student, he felt lonely, struggling against the challenges of high school life. Ms Lau, his Chinese teacher, was a light in his dark world. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand him, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.
One day, after class, Ms Lau asked Alex to her office with excitement shining in her eyes. "Alex, I have an offer for you," she said, her voice filled with joy. "I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world."
Alex's heart raced wildly, the thought of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and frightening. He felt worried, unsure if it was a good idea to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau's smile gave him the push he needed to make the decision.
With Ms Lau's help, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions. After Ms Lau became his Chinese teacher, he learned not only the language but also invaluable life lessons from her. She taught him the importance of being confident and not giving up, reminding him that growth only happens outside one's comfort zone.
The day of the program arrived, and Alex found himself on a plane headed for China. He couldn't help but feel shocked as he stepped off the plane and into a world so different from his own. The busy streets, bright colors, and unfamiliar sounds flooded his senses. Yet, Ms Lau's comforting presence by his side provided him with the strength to face the unknown.
During their time in China, Alex enjoyed the experience. He felt so excited that he couldn't wait to explore China. The high buildings, the modern cities, the breath-taking scenery and the advanced technology made Alex really fall in love with this great country. Also, Alex visited several well-known places of interest in China, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and so on, where he learned much more about Chinese traditional culture and history. Apart from that, he enjoyed a lot of Chinese delicious food, among which he liked the Beijing Roast Duck best. Most importantly, to his happiness, he made a lot of Chinese friends who were friendly and kind to him.

Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi.(“频繁的在线购买会产生更多的包装浪费,在线商品往往来自不同的配送中心。这两个因素都会导致每件商品的温室气体排放量增加,”Shahmohammadi说)”以及第六段的“They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.(然后,他们特别关注零售供应链中被称为“最后一英里”交付的部分:商店到客户之间的距离,或者在网上购物的情况下,货物配送中心到客户之间)”可推知,“the last mile” delivery(最后一英里配送)指从商店到顾客或从配送中心到顾客的距离,这一部分影响了总的温室气体足迹。故选 D。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks& clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.(分析显示,在63%的购物活动中,实体店购买的每件商品的温室气体排放总量高于bricks & clicks(当人们在网上订购,实体店将商品交付给他们时)的购买量,但在81%的购物事件中低于纯粹的参与者(严格意义上的在线卖家))”可知,根据分析显示,在线上加线下(bricks & clicks)购物方式中,温室气体排放量在大多数购物事件中低于纯在线购物方式(pure players)。由此可推知,bricks & clicks这种方式可能是最环保的购物方式。故选 B。

应用文:.Dear Frank,
I’m glad to share my ideas with you. Among the two topics you proposed, I would like to choose “A few true friends are enough”.
In my opinion, the quality of friendships far outweighs the quantity. True friends are those who stand by us through thick and thin. They are the ones who truly know us, accepting both our strengths and weaknesses. Having too many friends may spread your energy thin, making it hard to maintain deep connections. Therefore, I believe that a few true friends are indeed enough to enrich our lives and bring us true happiness.
Yours,
Li Hua
【导语】本篇书面表达属于应用文。要求考生就给定的两个话题做出选择,并写邮件向外教Frank说明选择及理由。

2.The following morning, Clara approached me with hopeful eyes again. She asked me to help her with a new project. This time, I took a deep breath and summoned up the courage to say, “Clara, I can't help you this time. I need to focus on my own things.” Her eyes widened in surprise, and she looked a bit disappointed. But I stood firm. I explained that I had learned from my past experience that I needed to balance helping others and taking care of myself.
After politely refusing her request, I felt both anxious and unexpectedly relieved. I was worried that Clara might be angry or that others would think I was unkind. However, as the day went on, I found that nothing bad happened. I was able to focus on my own studies and tasks. I finished my homework on time and even had time to read a book I liked. Clara came around later and said she understood. From then on, I learned to say “no” when necessary, and I started to build a more fulfilling life for myself.
