Abby's Lesson
Abby's father was taking her to visit her grandmother. Abby was going to be away for three months. "I can't leave Jerry behind," she said.
"You will have to," said her father. "You can't take a mouse into another country. It's a rule."
At the airport, Abby put her bag by the X-ray machine. Jerry was hidden in a sock. Abby hoped he didn't squeak.
The bag rolled under the X-ray. Abby felt her legs shaking and her heart beating fast. But the woman by the X-ray machine just smiled and said, "Have a good flight."
On the plane, Abby waited until her dad and the woman next to her fell asleep. Then she opened up the sock to look at Jerry. But Jerry jumped onto the woman's knee. The woman screamed (尖叫). Abby quickly caught him and put him into the sock and back into her bag.
A flight attendant (乘务员) rushed over. "A mouse!" cried the woman. "You were just dreaming," said the flight attendant to the woman. "There is no mouse here."
Abby's dad filled out a form before they landed. He ticked no to: "Are you bringing any live animals into the country "
Abby saw the man at the X-ray machine frown and then Abby and her dad were taken into a small room. The police officer talked to Abby's dad. "This is very serious," he said. "You have tried to take an animal into this country and you have lied on this form."
Abby felt fear. "It's my fault," she said in a small voice.
It was a real lesson for Abby. Jerry had to go into quarantine (隔离) for six months. It cost a lot of money. Her dad had to pay a big fine as well.

In 2005, Cliff Jones began a journey around Britain on a unicycle, a bicycle with only one wheel (轮子). Before that, he made a film about his experiences travelling around Europe in an old car. He was crazy about cars and worked in a car factory. To save money, Cliff went to work in London on an old bicycle, which he also used to go to France on holiday. “That trip opened my eyes,” he says. “I decided to travel around Britain by bike.”
Cliff didn’t want a normal (普通的) bicycle. He wanted to build one himself. “The craziest bike I could think of was a unicycle.” After visiting a unicycle factory, he made one and set out in 2005. He was away for four months, and travelled over 8,500 km.
For Cliff, the best part of the trip was arriving in Wales and seeing Mount Snowdon. “I met lots of cyclists (骑车的人) there. They could easily ride up mountains on their bikes, which I couldn’t do. But I was never sorry about making my unicycle. Many people were interested in my unicycle.” His worst moment came when he had to drink some dirty water from a river. A serious fever kept him in bed in the hospital for five long days. He didn’t want to give up the journey, but found it hard to carry on because he felt so weak. However, Cliff now says, “If possible, I would like to do something similar again.”

Advice on Doing Your Homework
Never try to work when you are very hungry. If you want to do your homework right after school, you may want to eat something before getting to work. Always do your homework before you get too tired. Don’t wait until very late in the evening, or the assignment will seem much harder than it really is.
Divide your time into a few parts. If you have more than an hour’s work, give yourself a break after an hour. On the other hand, don’t break it up so much that you can’t get anything done. You should be able to work at least half an hour at a time without stopping.
Don’t put it off (推迟) until the last minute. If you put off doing your homework, you will have it on your mind, and you won’t enjoy your free time so much. If you put it off until the end of the week or until right before a test, you will have too much catching up to do. A little bit each night, enough to keep up with what is happening each day in school, will take the fear out of tests and keep you on top of it all.
Do your homework at the same time every day. This will help you make it a habit—part of your daily work. It will make it easier to do, and it will make your free time more enjoyable as well.
36.When someone is hungry, he’d better ________.
A. not work at all B. work harder
C. not work too hard D. work as usual
37.The underlined word “assignment” means ________.
A. time B. test C. homework D. school
38.If you put off doing your homework, ________.
A. it will stay on your mind B. it will be much easier to do
C. it will make you happy D. it doesn’t matter much
39.To do your homework at the same time every day ________.
A. will make your homework take longer
B. will make your free time less pleasant
C. will help you form a good habit
D. will make it much harder

If you want to do a school project on children’s rights (权利), you can look on the Internet for some information. A United Nations website can show you plenty of useful information for the project.
The United Nations lists the rights of children. Most countries agree with all of them, but some countries do not. The following are some of the most important rights of children:
◆ Children have the right to be properly fed, clothed and sheltered (庇护) by their family. If their family can’t do so, the government should take responsibility.
◆ Children have the right to an education and medical care, which should be provided by the government.
◆ Children must not be cruelly punished by their parents or any others.
◆ Children have the right to expect the government to protect them from all kinds of abuse (虐待) and neglect (忽略).
◆ No child under fifteen should be made to fight in an army.
◆ Children have the right to be protected from being made to work too hard to make money for other people.
In some countries children do not have these rights. Many young children are made to work long hours in factories and on farms. In some countries there are so few schools that only rich children get an education. There are not enough doctors or nurses to help many children when they are sick.
The rights of children are, therefore, the rights people think children should have. They are not always the rights children really have.
40.________ agree with the United Nations’ list of children’s rights.
A. All countries B. A few countries C. No countries D. Most countries
41.The underlined word “responsibility” in the passage means ________.
A. something people have to do B. something people want to do
C. something people know how to do D. something people love to do
42.Some children can’t get an education because ________.
A. there are no schools B. there aren’t enough schools
C. they come from rich families D. they want to work in factories

43.Why is Denmark the “kingdom of fairy tales (童话王国)” Because it was the home of famous writer Hans Christian Andersen. But there might be other reasons, says a new study.
Denmark is the happiest country in the world, according to the 2013 World Happiness Report by the United Nations. The report ranks (排列) 156 countries and regions (地区). All the top five happiest countries are from Europe, and three of them are from Scandinavia.
What makes people there happy The UN found out several reasons.
Money is one. We are happy if we have money to cover our necessities. But extra (额外的) money cannot bring us more happiness. People in Northern Europe know this. From cars to mobile phones, from clothes to buildings, their designs are quite simple. Luxury (奢华) is not there.
Another reason is health. Nordic people have a healthy diet. They love fresh food. “There is not a big fast-food culture and no ready meals. We sit down with our families to eat our meals,” said Trina Hahnemann, a Danish cook.
A harmonious (和谐的) social life also makes us happy, according to the UN report. How about Nordic people They live in harmony not only with people around, but also with nature. Night life is not popular in Scandinavia. People go home after work and stay with family members. Many families have a backyard. Father and child spend hours there each week, planting flowers and building swings.
Do you want to be happy Think about the Nordic lifestyle, and happiness is in your own hands.

The life in the future will be far more convenient than today, with technology making daily life easier.
Computers and robots will take over many tasks. Robots will do housework like cleaning, cooking and washing, so people have more time for hobbies. Shopping online will be common—we can buy anything at home and get it delivered fast. When feeling unwell, we can have online doctor visits instead of going to hospitals.
To make this future real, we must study hard now. Learning more knowledge helps develop better technology. Only hard work today can turn our future life dream into reality.
