三、阅读单选(本大题共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)

Is there a connection between music and language According to recent studies, the answer is yes. Here, let’s look at the following two.
Music and Hearing
A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can make a person’s hearing ability become better. In the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group weren’t. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
Think about violinists in a show. When they play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and leave out the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Music and Speaking
Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to finally speak. Why does this work Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to help patients to use the brain again.
From the results, we can know that music is a good influence on concentration, the ability to focus on one thing. It works on listening and speaking skills as well. Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school as well. So music is not only enjoyable, it’s also good for us in many other ways.

The balalaika, also called the “Russian guitar”, is a traditional Russian musical instrument. It has a long neck, a wooden triangle-shaped body and strings. It is usually used to play Russian music by plucking (弹拨) the strings with fingers or a pick.
Russians like the balalaika. The music played with it can be cheerful, as if the farmers were dancing happily to celebrate their harvest. It can also be energetic, as if the workers were working hard to make their country richer and stronger. If a Russian moves to live or work abroad, he will probably take a balalaika with him. When he feels lonely and sad, he will play it to cheer himself up.
The balalaika was originally played by the poor in Russia. At that time, balalaikas were made by the players themselves. They were rough, simple and cheap with different numbers of strings, from two to even six. Later a Russian musician Vasily Vasilievich Andreyev (1861-1918) improved the balalaika. He created a whole family of balalaikas of different sizes, all with three strings. The smallest balalaika is called Prima. It is 60-70 cm long. The biggest, Contrabass, is almost 2 meters high with a leg to sit on the floor. Andreyev founded the first balalaika orchestra (管弦乐队) in the world, mainly using balalaikas to perform. For 16-year-old Ma Yifei, the violin performance of the Beijing 2022 Olympic theme song, Snowflake, was her best present for Paralympians (残奥运动员) all over the world. Even though snowflakes are connected with winter, she let others experience warmth, hope and light through her performance. “I’m also disabled and I want to do something for them with my music,” said Ma.
Ma went blind at the age of two because of an illness. She became interested in music when she was young. She started to learn to play the piano at five and the violin at nine, experiencing the “colorful” music through sound and emotion.
Ma’s mother Ha Chunyan, a former music teacher in a primary school, helped her memorize the music score (乐谱) before she played the piano. Ma could not see the keys and always played the wrong notes. It took her thousands of tries to play a piece correctly.
Learning the violin was more challenging. Ma needed to feel the teacher’s hands, arms and back to learn the movements, and listen to the strings (弦) over and over again to feel the muscles (肌肉) herself.
“After three years of learning, she still could not make any sound except terrible noises,” said Ha, who advised her daughter to give up the violin. But Ma said, “As I’ve been practicing so long, it’s hard to give up. I believe I will play better if I stick to practicing.”
In 2018, Ma got a chance to follow Sheng Yuan and Cao Yuhan, famous musicians from the Central Conservatory of Music, to study music in Beijing. She left her home in Ningxia to follow her musical dream, though she knew there would be more challenges ahead.
Ma expressed her excitement about performing at the big event. “All my hard work has paid off. I’m proud of standing on the stage today.”

Should music be played between classes
We had a discussion about whether music should be played between classes in English class.
Some think listening to music between classes is a good idea. Music can make them feel happy and relaxed. Music can make their lives colorful. However, others are against the idea. They think music may have a bad influence because some music is too noisy and they may get too excited to take a break. In my opinion, it’s good to play some soft and peaceful music instead of loud noisy music during the class break. In this way, students can enjoy music as well as having a good rest. Besides, I suggest playing music that is suitable for middle school students.
